"Brave, heartbreaking, thought-provoking and utterly incomparable to anything else out there. -L.J. Shen, USA Today Bestselling Author. When my son was six months old, he was kidnapped, plunging my life into darkness. After ten years, people expected me to move on like he had never existed. But I was stuck in a holding pattern of guilt and regret, unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It wasn’t until I met Porter Reese—a man who was just as broken as I was—that I found hope for another sunrise. No questions. No judgement. No faking it. Just two people alone in the darkness. If only he’d promised me no lies, too. Across the Horizon is a full length spin-off about Porter’s younger brother, celebrity chef Tanner Reese. “Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair. I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike. Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six. Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it... So does heartbreak.
Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.
Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.
She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
Since i discovered Aly martinez i have been trying to read all her books.
The Darkest Sunrise & The brightest sunset
what can i say about these two books. I went in blind didnt know anything about it other than who wrote it and that was enough but im so glad i went in blind and found this. This book right from the start you know its going to be a heartbreaking tale and i was not wrong it was so intense and as a mother myself my heart broke into pieces for Charlotte, but i have to say i was right about the way i thought it would go and i loved it, that twist was oh so good and left me with a lump in my throat thinking what would i do if this was me, it was heartbreaking and intense and one hell of a rollercoaster of emotional ride loved every second of it .
Across the Horizon
We met Tanner and Rita in the first two books and now they finally got their own book and i loved it not as intense as the first two but they had their own dramas , nothing is ever smooth sailing.
Great read cannot wait to read the rest of her books.
(This is a review for the duet in this series. I will be reviewing the spinoff book, ACROSS THE HORIZON separately) "I'll stop with you. Right now, it's just me and you in the dark."
This was my first books by Aly Martinez and I was blown away by the emotional rollercoaster this story took me on! It was a painful journey for these characters, but that journey proved that certain people come into your life for a reason and love CAN grow in the dark.
If you're looking for emotion, character and plot depth, and a love story that takes you through many ups and downs, then this story is for you. I can't express enough how much I loved this story. I will be keeping an eye out for more books from this author, so I can capture these feelings again from her other books. If YOU'RE new to Aly, give this series a try!
"It's always darkest before the dawn, Porter. We just have to wait a little longer. The sun always rises, baby."
I could go through each book individually but it wouldn't matter all three would be the same rating. When reading the reviews as I usually do I almost allowed the two star reviews to be the deciding factor for reading the sunrise duet...I knew it was going to make me cry like a watching a Lifetime movie at Christmas...but I am so glad I read it anyway. It was sad, there was a lot of drama (though I have definitely read books with worse drama and much less believable drama) and I did cry multiple times. I also found a book and an author that enthralled me enough to keep me going until the last word was read. Tanner and Rita were like icing on the cake, just as beautiful and sweet as the first two. I think I have found a new author and I will be looking at more of her books to see if this new infatuation continues
Today I am here with one of my first reads of 2025. Since I don’t have any ARC’s at the moment, I always love to go back to my TBR and see what I can read next. This time I went back to an author I have enjoyed several times in the past and I decided to check out a duet she released a while ago. I am talking about Aly Martinez and her Darkest Sunrise series. I actually read Across the Horizon (the third book which happens to work as a standalone too) back in 2019 and I really loved it, so I made the decision to finally read the other two books.
I have been completely immersed in The Darkest Sunrise and The Brightest Sunset during the last two days. Charlotte and Porter’s love story is not an easy one to read. It’s so beautiful but so heartbreaking at the same time. Both characters (and their families) go through some terrible experiences but it’s so heartwarming and so satisfying to see how this couple finds their way into the light together. I enjoyed both installments from start to finish, and I highly recommend you read this series if you haven’t yet!
These were really good books. Definitely a different storyline that I hadn’t read before. So many emotions especially in the duet with Porter and Charlotte.
I was glad when reading Tanner’s story, it was truly all him and Rita. I was worried we were going to get a lot of the previous books in there but just from Tanner’s POV.
Loved the first two in the series but the third felt like an after thought, Tanner and Rita intersected with Charlotte and Porter in the first 2 but not in this one. That was a bit weird. Hi
Great story which provides you with all the emotional feels and some definite plot twist. You cant help but to root for the characters to find a way to their HEA.
I greatly enjoyed, the charismatic personalities of Tanner and Rita. Love after a bad relationship exists, ask two named Tanner Reese and one named Rita Hartley.
The Darkest Sunrise - 4 stars Wow. What a ride. This was an emotional journey. I loved the chemistry between Porter and Charlotte. They both have a lot of demons to fight. Even though I had a strong feeling about what was going to happen, the end of this book still broke me. I can not wait for the next book to see how the story goes.
The Brightest Sunset - 4 stars Another emotional roller coaster that had my heart racing. This book was frustratingly good. The actions of some of the characters made me want to punch them. But the end made it worth the frustration.
Across the Horizon - 5 stars I was hooked from the very first sentence. I did not want to put this book down. I love Tanner and Rita. They have perfect chemistry. This book was not too heavy on the drama, but it definitely pulled at my heart.
