The Silent Psychopath

Rate this book
“The Silent Psychopath” – Why You Should Never Date Someone You Meet in Rehab, is a true story written by Jennylee Rose Bruno which documents her life growing up in a middle-class town in Massachusetts before her comfortable world is turned upside down by a young man with no regard for his life or anyone else’s. Despite being Deaf, Jennylee is sent to regular schools and due to endless bullying, she pretends to overdose and is sent to a psychiatric hospital. It was here that she meets Devin, who takes her on a chaotic terror ride into his dark world of drugs and violence. She experiences several near-death experiences, gets mixed up with the mafia, learns about Devin’s murderous side and is involved in a bizarre encounter with the late John F. Kennedy Jr. During this time, Devin threatens to shoot Jennylee and her family if she attempts to escape. He ultimately holds her hostage for four years, allowing her just fifteen minutes of freedom a day. All of the events that are described in this book actually took place, even though they are quite incredible. The book is an intense yet addictive read as it is so well observed from the eyes of a naïve young woman who makes up for her inability to hear with her acute awareness of visual detail and keen observation of the characters that she encounters along this insane and horrifying journey.

I enjoyed the aspect of reading what it was like for her to grow up deaf in a hearing family. I’m hearing and I’m currently learning ASL and working on becoming fluent. The violence and abuse was very upsetting to read, I wish she had been able to get the help that she so desperately needed sooner. Overall it was a sad story, and the ending left me a little confused. Her picture on the back of the book shows her with her 5 children, I would’ve liked to hear about that to end on a somewhat better note.

This book was really good and it was based on a true story, and I felt so bad for what Jennylee have gone through in her life when she was a young lady. To be honest, she did not deserve what she received from her abusive husband. I stand up with her, and I am looking forward to reading her second book that will be released sometime by next year.

This book was something I enjoyed reading. Being deaf myself, I was able to relate to a childhood of bullying from peers. The rest was a page turner, the author did a good job giving the reader feels of what she was going through and why she did what she did to keep the ones she loved safe. Looking forward to the next book!

Wow, raw story of what is a common story for many Deaf people in the hearing world. It is very graphic, but I am so proud of JennyLee for sharing her story because it needs to be told. Parents of deaf children really need to embrace their children's deafness, learn how to help them be successful, etc. instead of forcing them to be hearing.
