This (106,000 words) third book concludes the Glory Game series. Damascus ‘Mac The Knife’ Steele has had some close calls with interstellar mercenaries and a demon star, but now he faces his greatest challenges as hostilities with the mysterious alien race have exploded into a full blown, no holds barred war. With the loss of old and ‘new’ friends, this war has become very personal for Steele and the price of victory might be more than he’s willing to pay. This military SF story contains (lots of) space battles and some ground battles.

My criticism is that there is too much effort spent in tactics. They are open to disagreement or criticism. For me, the ground battle would have been done differently. I would have skip bombed the ships using the same hand delivered ordinance, and I would have established area denial using caltrops. A little bit of ancient military tactics along with a page from Billy Mitchell. The story was interesting, but I don't know what the ground war had to do with anything. The death of an old friend was a little bit too casual for it to be emotional. There were some misspelled words. Little errors such as it should have been hopping rather than hoping. One word was a hominem that had a totally different meaning. There was some interesting political interplay, but it was rather simply portrayed, e.g., flag officers threatened to resign if the experienced foreigners kept getting the plum assignments, etc. In a way I liken this story to that old movie entitled "in harms way"
A really enjoyable read with strong lead characters. Some good plot twists and turns keep the reader’s attention. Definitely want to see this series continued.
2.5 stars. Finished this series but I'm not sure I'll remember anything about it in a few weeks. It's basically a comic book but with more words and without pictures.
Enjoyed this book very much my only complaint would be the lengths the author went in explaining the battle sections of the book but that was a minor problem
