This was a good edition to the series. However, there were quite a few continuity errors that baffled me. First, Kate’s boyfriend’s name went from being spelled Allen to Alan. Kate’s partner went from Kristen DeMarco to Jo DeMarco. In the last book, Kate was 56, and this one she’s 55. Little things like this are easy to overlook, but it was just odd. It’s almost like this one was supposed to be earlier in the series and then the author waited and didn’t bother editing.

Either way, I enjoyed the storyline and look forward to the release of the 6th book.

Another book in this series I found was so easy to read and get caught up in. The characters are amazing still and I love to see what Agent Wise does next. She is a 55 soon to be 56 year old bad ass woman who was retired from the FBI for a couple years and decided retirement just wasn't for her and went back. She is only called when they need her but it seems like they are calling more and more these days.

This one only got 3 stars because this author went back to a scenario I hate that she does. in books 1-3 she did this in each book. The first book it was okay but by book 3 it was getting old and it is annoying. Director Duran gets mad that Agent Wise and DeMarco haven't cracked the case in like 2 or 3 days so he orders Kate to get home and he is assigning different agents to the case to work with DeMarco. He gets mad at her and orders her home then she disobeys because she feels close to solving the case but then she disobeys the orders and it's just getting old. In book 4 that didn't happen. I was so happy the author may have decided that scenario is overplayed (TRUST ME IT IS) but then this book Duran calls her back and she had only been there 2 days. All because Kate decided to talk to the press when she saw a bullying situation happening. I was so annoyed she reverted back to this again I knew the book would have to work hard to get a 3 star. I was so annoyed that I gave it 2 stars but the ending redeemed itself to a 3 star. I miss being able to give these book 4 or 5 stars.

I do still HIGHLY recommend people to read this series because it is a great series. I love the story lines and how evil the bad guys are. Great story I look forward to book 6.

This book seems to be the much the same as all the other books. Kate struggling with being older, doing her job and being a grandma, her boss has DeMarco babysitting her at times. Maybe I wouldn't notice this so much if I wasn't reading/listening to these back to back. I want Kate to yell at her boss, want her to not jump when they say. Yet she did find a killer, one who was pretty prolific and not on anyone's radar. Hopefully her enforced break will help her clear her mind on where things stand in her life.

Still entertaining and easy to read, but it gets old that Kate is so easily pulled of the case after having to drop everything to be on the case...

not gonna lie, this series is starting to get a little monotonous, BUT they are still interesting and easy to read/listen to, so I'm definitely going to finish the series - 2 books to go!

Ok, but losing its charm

The one complaint I have about all these books is the whining from Kate about her age and her constant insecurities. While I can understand them, it’s time to get over it. The story itself was good but it was extremely easy to figure it out, which I did before the mat end her partner questioned the elephant in the room. I honestly don’t know if I will read the next book in the series because every book seems much alike.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about the drama going on in her personal life anymore. She, her daughter and her boyfriend are all selfish in one way or the other but can't own up to that. They all want something from her, while she's more interested in her career (which I can't fault her for enjoying because DAMN, woman!) The only reason I'm still reading is that each case Kate Wise solves is different, exciting, and incredibly captivating. You just HAVE to watch the mystery unravel.

Its always been pretty clear from the content of the books in this series that the author gets most of her law enforcement knowledge from TV but it really gets over the top ridiculous in this book. I was losing interest in the series before and I'm completely done now. This is one of the worst crime books ever.

This one was a bit more predicable.

Being 5 books into series, it is frustrating that author keeps having character's boss put her on a case then threatening to or actually removing her due to 'lack of progress' only to have her solve case next day or two out of nowhere

The murder mystery in the story is always interesting, but I'm going to save you a LOT of time...

The protagonist, 55-year-old Kate Wise, is not happy being retired and she's pretty much the best FBI agent EVER! The FBI director brings her back to work to help solve a case and train a new agent who is going to be the next best FBI agent EVER!

She stands her boyfriend up, ignores her daughter and grandaughter, and heads back to work, but laments about it throughout the book. After working on the case for a matter of hours or maybe a day or so, her director pulls her from the case because she hasn't magically solved it, nevermind the fact that there are very few clues to work with.

She defies the director, and goes rogue. She misses clues, arrests a suspect, then second-guesses her arrest, finds the right suspect, but only after failing to properly follow safety procedures and getting her ass kicked (while constantly lamenting her age -55 OMG!) at every opportunity and whether she should just give in to retirement. Then, she cleverly solves the case.

The director calls her back to DC where she gets lambasted by the angry (wink-wink) director. She returns home where her boyfriend and daughter forgive her and understand that she simply MUST work because she's pretty much the best FBI agent EVER! Now you're ready for the next book, which is pretty much the same with a whacky surprise at the end.

BLURB: When another 50 year old woman is found dead in her home in a wealthy suburb—the second such victim in just two months—the FBI is stumped. They must turn to their most brilliant mind—retired FBI agent Kate Wise, 55—to come back to the line of duty and solve it.

What do these two empty nesters have in common? Were they targeted?

How long until this serial killer strikes again?

And is Kate, though past her prime, still able to solve cases that no one else can?

An action-packed thriller with heart-pounding suspense, IF SHE FLED is book #5 in a riveting new series that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

Retired FBI agent, Kate Wise, returns to the field again in another case. Fans of TV series like Criminal Minds, Law and Order, etc. will most likely enjoy this series. This time there are three murders that may or may not be related. Kate and her younger partner work the case, while also having to justify Kate's involvement.

This last part (retired or not retired) is the problematic part of this series, for me. Don't think about Kate as being "elderly" because she's retired. It's more like many veterans that I know that retire from the military in their 40s; Kate is actually in her earlier 50s and I consider that a prime time in most folks' work lives. But Kate seems to vacillate constantly about her supposed retirement; she misses the work. At the same time, this indecision may be affecting her relationships with her daughter and new relationship. My father used to say, "Poop, or get off the pot!" (yes, that was close to swearing in our household) and that's what I want to say to Kate. Decide. If you still want to work on cases with the FBI, do it, but discuss all of this with your loved ones. Otherwise, either enjoy your time to spend with the new grandbaby and family, or try a investigating-adjacent job where you can have more control over your schedule. Since I retired twice, I believe I understand the pull of work you have enjoyed.

But I do like this series of novels because they are shorter and can be listened to when traveling without having to stop in the middle.

If She Fled - a review by Rosemary Kenny

*slight spoilers*
MC Kate Wise is a retired FBI aged - at the grand young age of 55 - and she's obsessed with her age and weight, like most of we ladies 'of a certain age' as it used to be called, (back when the expected lifespan was much lower than it is nowadays, especially for women with the associated risks of frequent childbirth etc).
As that's not the case here, I feel Pierce Blake could have either mentioned these facts in the cover blurb or very quickly at some point in the book when/if it becomes an issue - but not otherwise, as it doesn't add anything of importance to the storyline.
Basically, Ms Wise is recalled to help solve a murder that may relate to a previous one she worked on the team for, many years ago. Seemingly current agents and local police are unable to do so and Kate's paired with another female, Agent DeMarco. Both are impulsive, feisty and mutually supportive women, who save each other from a Silence of the Lambs 'Buffalo Bill'-type serial killer hiding in plain sight, until the link between his victims is established, after the elimination of numerous red herrings, in this intense psychological murder-mystery.

Read If She Fled by spookily creative Master of the Macabre, Blake Pierce if you dare - but look under the bed, sleep with the lights on and keep all the doors locked tight, tonight and every night from now on - just in case!

Is Kate past her prime as an FBI Agent...read on to find out!

Kate and Alan have plans for a night out of dinner and a movie. You guessed it...her daughter Melissa needs Kate to babysit for her granddaughter and Director Duran needs her off to a murder case in Illinois. Someone has killed a middle aged woman and it's up to Kate and DeMarco to figure out who and if it's a serial murderer. In the end, Kate always gets her man but this case is proving to be difficult and has her questioning herself and her abilities as an agent.

Mr. Pierce is a can't put down this book kind of writer and keeps his readers on their toes trying to figure out the ending and he always surprises me. He is inventive and exciting and leaves his readers wanting more.

I was given an advanced copy and was in no way compensated for my review.

First off, I like this series a lot. Kate is likable in the FBI setting. As a girlfriend and mother she can be a bit frustrating, but I think that has more to do with the fact that it's the same scenario every book (ultimatums, unsure of what she does, bailing on them last minute, them getting mad).

Before reading the book I read a review on Goodreads that noted some inconsistencies (i.e. Allen was spelled Alan in this book). It looks like the error was caught and changed (as of 6/12/2021), buuuuut, they must have used a find and replace to fix the Kindle format. I found six times where words that had "alan" in them changed to "allen". For example:

nonchAllently
BAllenced
nonchAllent
bAllence (this one appeared 3 times)

Very surprising to see, but that's just editing. I will continue to read the series.

2.5 Stars for me!

A few things bug me about this series.

1. The cardinal rule in evidence collection is that the evidence is used to determine who is guilty. The two agents in this series try to make the evidence fit their suspect. Very bad police work.

2. The MC constantly gets overpowered by the bad guy.

3. The MC always has a falling out with her superiors. Yes some of the orders and ridiculous time lines put in place will only hamper an investigation but that drama sequence is getting a bit stale.

4. In this story, the agents initiate a search without a warrant with zero evidence that a life us in peril. A first year law student could get every bit of evidence found excluded from the trial.

I do like the series overall but let's try some new drama points and attempt to follow procedures that lead to convictions.

End of rant! 😊

I put this down a year ago because it was entirely predictable. I picked it back up for sh*ts and giggles. You definitely get the dopamine hit from "figuring it out" but honestly, all 5 books are the same. Kate mentions countless times 1. Shes 55, almost 56 2. She doesnt know how long her loved ones will tolerate her dropping them at every case 3.She is certain her "agreement" with the FBI is surely over even though it never is.

I love a good whodunit and a good investigator a fantastic story. I like Kate but she is one dimensional. 5 books later and I dont know her more than surface level. So far there is not a solid hook to keep reading the series.

Series had promise but...

Again with the editing errors! The most irritating was referring to a victim's husband as her wife, and forgetting that Agent DeMarco had a girlfriend in book 4 and having her book up with a random bartender with no mention of the previous supposed relationship. Once again Kate is waffling in her choice to return to the FBI, once again Melissa is upset with her mother, and once again Allen is giving her an ultimatum. Having read 5 books in the series this will be my last

Not overly impressed with this book. I find that this series isn’t as exiting as the others and it seems to be a repeat of the previous book. She’s very insecure about her age and her relationships with her family and her job at the FBI and I find it very frustrating. I won’t be reading the next book unfortunately. Also the book seems to have a lot of editing errors too. In one place I noticed that they have wrote the wrong surname down for one of the characters and a lot of spelling errors etc. Never mind on to the next one! Absolutely love the Jessica Hunt series and Riley Page ☺️

I'm not sure where to begin...I've always Blake Pierce's writing and have read most of his books; this series is becoming difficult to get through. Between the all to many typos, just plain bad editing and the fact that half way through every book Kate's boss gets pissed off, calls her off the case, she disobeys, and then solves the crime is becoming rather redundant. I will finish the next two books (#6 now and #7 which I pre-ordered) because I paid for them but then I think I'm done with this author.

Kate Wise is becoming one of my favorite FBI Agents. In this book Kate and her partner is on a case that seems to be at a stand still. 2 bodies and no evidence. Then this case takes of like a lighting bolt and pieces are falling into order and Kate, the Sheriff, and her partner finds themselves in a race to stop the next murder. Because they found evidence that shows that this murderer has a big secret and he must be stopped.

Kate Wise doesn’t it again, she solves another serial killer mystery. Are all the books gonna be about her almost losing her position as a lead on homicides. The story seems to be more about age discrimination; is she too old to do the job or do they not trust her judgment. Can a woman be successful in her job, have a relationship and raise a family. It seems as if she must choose one or the other in each book.

20 hours

It only took 20 hours to finish this book, and 12 of those hours were spent sleeping. Once again, Blake Pierce knocked it out of the park, putting the reader in the action with his great descriptions. Like all books, Kate and Demarco are growing their relationship as partners and friends. Kate is learning what it takes to balance her daughter and boyfriend while still being all in with the FBI. Set some time aside, and before you know it, you will be onto book six!

Another great book in the Kate Wise series by Blake Pierce. As always he builds suspense and shows that Wise and DeMarco are fierce FBI agents that are willing to put themselves out there to capture the evil antagonist, even to the risk of their career.
Kate is a crossroads in her life...but she remains strong and I look forward to the next chapter in her life.

In this book, as in many TV detective series over the years, the brilliant (and unfailingly successful) detective has a boss with no faith in them - and in this case, also her boss's boss with the same attitude. Disappointing and unrealistic; the boss couldn't have gotten to that level without some smarts, yet they lack faith in their detective despite 100% success in every case.

If She Fled (Kate Wise #5) was a great read by Blake Pierce. Another 50 year old woman is found dead in her Wealthy home. There have been two alike victims in only two months. The FBI is stumped and turn towards Kate Wise to solve the crime. They are looking for anything that will solve or help solve this case. I loved reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Decent murder mystery - a bit gruesome for my taste. But a quick and easy read that kept me listening. However, authors, if you include something specific as a plot element, such as piano tuning, please get a piano tuner to critique. Please. I read this audiobook on Hoopla.
