Driftwood Dreams

Rate this book
From the bestselling author of Lulu’s Café
Josie Slater has allowed the circumstances anchoring her in Sunset Cove to become a life sentence. Since her mother’s death years before, she’s spent most of her waking hours helping her dad run the Driftwood Diner. As her best friends, Opal and Sophia, make their dreams come true, Josie watches her own art school aspirations drift on by. But when a French-speaking Southern gentleman from her past moves back from Europe, Josie is launched into a tizzy of what-ifs and I-sure-do-hope-sos.

August Bradford left Sunset Cove six years ago to sow some life oats and conquer his ambitious career goals. Finally ready to lay down some roots, the successful artist is back in town and determined to win Josie’s heart. When he enlists Josie’s help in the preparations for a children’s art camp, Josie finds herself unleashing her artistic side in a way she hasn’t since before her mother’s death. August hopes to convince Josie to paint a life with him, but the problem is convincing her to let go of her apprehensions and give him―and her dreams―a fair chance.

I loved the chemistry between August and Josie. It was funny how dumbstruck she was around him at first. The way August wooed Josie was award winning swoony. Very romantic.
I've never read about a character with such a sweet heart like Josie. She had a heart of gold set on sacrificing for others.

So inspiring how a common, shared history united them together. I loved how their love story turned out despite the pain and hardship they had both gone through.

August and Josie's story was inspiring to believe despite what life throws God is still in control and one would smile again. The sun will rise again, the rainbow will appear soon because the One who controls them never fails.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

3 Delightful Ways This Romance Made Me Swoon

I’m not a swooner. In fact, “sap,” as I like to call it, doesn’t warm the cockles (revolting sounding thing if I’ve ever heard one) of my heart. Romantic gestures are just that—pantomime for the sake of an audience watching or reading the relationship’s genesis.

Not my thing.

This book? With this book, I swooned. With all the beauty, tenderness, reserve, and intensity of the restraint shown by Margaret Hale and John Thornton in North & South, this story festoons every page with such delicate, deliberate, and determined romance that I should have run screaming.

Instead, I slowed my reading pace, drank in every word. Every look. Each moment.

I don’t know how she did it, but T.I. Lowe made me believe in romance in the span of one, delightful, tender novel that made me love and care for the characters who lived it.

How did it make me swoon? Let me count the ways.

I swooned over August’s steadfastness.
He’s loved her since high school, and now he’s returned home to win her heart—no matter how long it takes. Despite her insecurities, her determination to go a different direction for reasons he can’t grasp, and her constant pushing back, he’s there waiting, ready, loving. Sounds like someone else I know. Or is that Someone?

I swooned over August’s tenderness.
I’ve only watched one movie or TV kiss in my entire life. Well, I watched a certain spit string in a certain horrible version of a beloved classic book about four sisters, once, but I don’t count that. In books, I skip the kissing scenes, too. They’re not my thing, (although one other book has a fun twist on them that I read most of—just keeping it honest). I don’t do kisses.

I read every line of this book. Somehow, Lowe manages to write out the tender, intimate details of that sort of private moment so that you live it with the character without feeling like you’re intruding or worse, participating in their private moment. I don’t know how she does it, but I’ll be rereading several spots to learn from her. This book. NAILED IT.

Reduced to its simplest form, I believe the tenderness that August shows, the patience, the deep love and care that waits for acceptance and encouragement—those are the things that make even kissing scenes beautiful. Again, the whole thing reminded me of the tenderness the Lord shows when He woos broken, hurting, skittish people back to His tender embrace.

I swooned over August’s patience.
By the end, August doubts his own ability to be patient, even as he waits. The entire book is the story of August waiting for Josie to yield and trust. Kind of like another Book I know of… that I love.

You know, the spiritual element in the book is rather understated, but for me, it glowed in neon lights.
“You are loved,” it says. “I will be here. With you. I will never leave or forsake you.” If that weren’t enough, with heavenly hands cupped around your face, it whispers assurances that all will be well. “My love will never fail you. I’ll keep you close. Always,” He says.

And T.I. Lowe shows that on every page of Driftwood Dreams.

I have only one tiny complaint. At one point, Josie wishes she could let her heart lead all the time as if following one’s heart is a good thing. Scripture says otherwise. I know what the author meant, but it’s such a dangerous turn of phrase that it jerked me out of the story while I stamped down my frustration. It wasn’t enough to make me regret requesting and receiving the free review copy I got. I’ll be buying a few more of hers this weekend.

Recommended for anyone who loves romance done right. No trumped-up drama, no insta-love, no ridiculous “misunderstandings.” Only life lessons and a picture of the Lord’s love for His people shown in the flawed actions of one very fine character.

Sweet at times but I didn’t like the back and forth of their relationship. They each did things in the relationship that annoyed me. It was more complicated than I wanted to read. I’ll still read the third book though.

'Josie Slater collects people in need like a crazy cat lady collects strays, but she won't let anyone do that for her.'

Josie Slater has imposed a life sentence upon herself to help her daddy run their café after her mother's untimely death years ago. She has never even thought to allow her own dream to come to fruition. She's too busy taking care of everyone else.

Six years ago August Bradford left town and fulfilled his own dreams and goals. Now he is back in Sunset Cove to settle down for good. He is also bound and determined to win Josie. You see, both Josie and August have always had a crush on the other. But August must find a way to convince Josie to let herself be set free from all the expectation she has put on herself. And he is convinced that he will not lose.

I only discovered this author this week and I love her books already! Written expertly with characters crafted so that they jump into the readers heart and emotions so deeply felt that you just sigh so often throughout the book, these are books I love and think about long after I'm finished reading them. The author is a fellow lifelong South Carolinian as well and I totally got her turns of phrasing, too! Loved every minute and highly recommended.

*My thanks to Tyndale House Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinion stated here is my own.

Wow, this author does it again! I enjoyed this even more than book 1! The story picked up right after the events of the last book, but in Josie's and August's perspectives which I loved to see. Both creatives, it was super fun to see all of the art projects they did together. It was so sweet how August was committed to bringing Josie out of her shell and pushing her to pursue her God-given talents and dreams.
I really connected with Josie's character as someone who is a big giver, but has to remember to keep a balance of letting others reach out and help her as well. The way the author wove together August's ability to help encourage Josie because of his tough childhood with Josie's healing journey from grief to daring to dream again made for an exceedingly beautiful and stirring read.
There was also great mental health rep in here with a message of always reaching out for help when you need it, and looking out for others in their life storms as well. That's what I love about this author's books: they tackle situations that are real, raw, and relatable while still having lots of laugh out loud humor and encouraging faith content.
Aaand, there was a featured playlist with one of my favorite For King & Country songs; could it get any better?!
Needless to say, I'm so excited to finish this series and get into the next book!

"I'm a thief . . . . A thief of moments. . . . I want to steal as many as I can steal in the time God gives me. Jo . .. will be a thief with me?"

"When a man loves a woman" . . . . the words to that classic pop ballad ran continually through my mind the entire time that I was reading this book. August Bradford's pursuit of the gorgeous, shy, fearful, talented, and terribly fragile Josie Slater is a masterpiece of wooing . . . . teasing, touching, tugging . . someone else's heart closer than they ever imagined it could be. Using multiple brushstrokes; words, colors, paints, and canvases, August draws Josie into a step-by-step journey towards a life that "is too short to live without you".

I expect that I will read this story over and over and over again . . . . as it's meant to be.

I am officially a T.I. Lowe fan. What a terrific book!

Mind you, I’m nowhere near a fan of contemporary romances as I am historical fiction books. But Ms. Lowe has turned me around. Well maybe not permanently as far as contemporary fiction goes. But if they were all like this one, so well written, so fascinating, such terrific characters… I’d continue to be charmed with contemporary fiction.

Wow factor: The romance.

August Bradford is such an amazing man who pursues Josie with gentleness, understanding and patience. He just gets her. He does everything he can to ease her fears, at the same time encourages her to see her God given talents and to stretch her wings. He shows her there is a bright and colorful future beyond her self-imposed obligations. He gives her hope.

Faith element: Mild. No Gospel spelled out, but faith is evident in the main characters.

Clean? Yes, most definitely! No disappointing language that I can remember. No uncomfortable touching or body-talk (as I refer to when one character ogles another’s physical assets). Kissing yes, but not for a long, long time into the book, and certainly no prolonged descriptions of it. Sweet.

If I had one criticism it would be of the very last paragraph of the very last chapter before the epilogue. Maybe it was because of the narrator's voice inflections but it was a bit sappy.

That certainly isn’t enough for me to give it anything less than five stars.

On a fun note, this was an audiobook, and I don’t often hear my name in a book, so it was a surprise to hear the narrator using it. (Josie's deceased mother)

Anyway, good book I can recommend to anyone… And I’m thinking this would be a great book for husbands to read who need pointers in the "romance" department. 😁

An author I respect did a review on this book. Great review

Driftwood Dreams is a beautiful little contemporary romance. “Beautiful” because of the cover and print quality and the excellent storytelling within. “Little” because of its physical mass-market size but that’s where the smallness ends. The heart of this book is big with humor and sass to spare plus not-so-light-and-fluffy real-life topics.

Driftwood Dreams by T.I. Lowe quote graphic Faithfully BookishJosie reminds me of a dainty bird who remains trapped by a bruised heart long after her broken wing has healed. I commiserated with her as she blundered her way through memories and future fears. Her artistic gift mesmerized my mind’s eye and her compassion challenged my heart to speak louder to my hands and feet. August is a brush-wielding Casanova with a heart of gold. I enjoyed peeling back the layers of his personality and I’ll leave the depths of that discovery for other readers to reveal for themselves.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, T.I. Lowe gently probes the heart with authenticity, hope, and humor. The quintessential coastal town of Sunset Cove is an irresistible setting for this heartwarming and masterfully delivered series. I highly recommend Driftwood Dreams by T.I. Lowe and I am eagerly anticipating the final Carolina Coast novel.

Book 2 in the Carolina Series. Josie is a person that does everything for anyone. She feels that it is her duty and because of such, her life isn't her own. Before her Mother died she was going off to Art College with the man of her dreams, August. August came back to town after his own art career takes off. He decides to move home for good, but one of his plans, to get Josie back. Can he bring her out of her shell and live for herself as for others. Will she take the art position at the new camp August started? Will she finally fall in love with August? Love this story. I know first hand that you plans for life can be derailed. Sickness, a death of a parent, and many other things can effect your plans for life. I am learning it is up to you, with the help of Christ and love ones to go out there and try anew. Josie can't let herself be free and start anew. She is blessed with her friends and August who believes in her. This series is amazing. So much reminds me of what I deal with in life, like many of you faces. I so highly recommend this series to all of you with dreams that might not have gone your way but as we put in our trust in Christ, His plans are so much better!!

I have not read book number one in this Driftwood Dreams series but it did not keep me from thoroughly enjoying this second in the series. I loved the meandering story line through the lives of Josie and August and the nuances and large expressions of love that wove their way into this love story. August was the most energetic, creative hero that anyone can imagine. And he uses his gifts to show to Josie how she needs to learn to be able to express her true self. But Josie is a sacrificial giver so much so that she neglects her own life.
I loved that making art is such a large part of this story, and how the happiness and joy can result from the act of doing 'art'. I recommend this book! Well worth the read!

blissful sigh

I could really stop my review there… but I won’t. Because I neeeeeeeeed to swoon-flail (new word) over August. Oh how I love a hero who pursues the woman he loves. That gentle intention that gives meaning to every action, every word, every ‘just dropping by’ moment. There’s something about that kind of patient, purposeful romance that wraps so completely around my heart. I think because it reminds me that I am pursued by a Savior – gently, intentionally, patiently, lovingly. Reminds me that He would do anything to get to me and show me how much He loves me. My favorite kind of story is one that organically reflects The Story without feeling forced or preachy – and Lowe’s incredible talent does exactly that in Driftwood Dreams.

Josie herself is a complex character with several layers to unpack, and a carefully hidden fragility about her spirit. That’s not to say that she is weak – on the contrary, Josie is an exceptionally strong woman, even if she doesn’t realize it. I adored her relationship with the eccentric Dalma (who I want to just hug all the time), and Dalma’s antics added a great deal of humor to the story. Their unpredictable interactions infused Driftwood Dreams with wisdom and tenderness as well. And of course there are the Sand Queens – Josie’s BFF’s – Opal and Sophia. I loved following up with Opal’s story and grew more and more intrigued by Sophia’s, which we’ll see in book 3.

Bottom Line: Driftwood Dreams by T.I. Lowe is romance novel perfection. August and Josie are creative, artistic, and well-layered, and their relationship journey is absolutely beautiful. Main, secondary, and tertiary characters are all nicely drawn and each contributes in his/her own way to add dimension to the story. Lowe is a master at writing books with faith, hope, humor, tenderness, and swooniness – each element combining intrinsically with the others in such a way that neither can be omitted without losing something essential. I grinned a lot, I got a little teary, and I swooned often. A must-read for fans of Becky Wade, Denise Hunter, and Pepper Basham.

In the interest of full disclosure, I also received compensation from the publisher to coordinate an instagram tour for this series with JustRead Tours, a company I partially own. All views expressed are still only my honest opinion & were not in any way influenced by compensation for coordinating the tour.)

When I learned that Driftwood Dreams was book two in The Carolina Coast series, I purchased a copy of the first book, Beach Haven so I would be sure to be up to speed when I began reading. I did discover that Driftwood Dreams can easily stand on its own merits but I am also happy that I read the first book first. It was fun catching up with familiar characters as well as getting to know Josie a little better.

Josie is a fixer and although she doesn’t actually acknowledge it, she operates as though God needs her help taking care of everyone else. She has always had a thing for August Bradford but tends to become tongue-tied whenever he is around so she usually avoids him as much as possible. It hasn’t been too difficult while he was out of town for several years but now that he is back for good, Josie cannot seem to avoid him.

Driftwood Dreams was a fun to read novel filled with interesting and sometimes quirky characters. I frequently found myself laughing at some of their antics only to encounter a sweetly tender scene on the next page. I loved how August patiently wooed Josie, giving her space when she needed it yet constantly encouraging her to follow her dreams and exhorting her with the truth. I admired Josie’s loyalty to her father and her generous spirit toward her friends and others in need, especially one precious but eccentric old lady.

In my opinion, Driftwood Dreams is a gem of a story and I recommend it to all, especially those who enjoy Southern fiction. I would also recommend Beach Haven and I am looking forward to the next installment.

This was another wonderfully delicious laugh out loud read by TI Lowe. It was poignant, full of life, with characters that feel like friends. I got a bit frustrated with Josie a few times, but nothing I didn’t get over by the end of the it. :) I hope Josie and August live and love happily ever after stealing moments and memories together.

Dreams never die, life just put them on hold.

I’m just going to put this out there now, I Love T.I. Lowe and this story is the perfect reason why. Southern charm and whit ooze off the pages as she opens the door to this quaint little community full of every day people. Some of the locals have left town to follow their dreams while others stay behind and put their dreams on a shelf.

Josie is this shy, unassuming woman who does everything for everyone and puts her needs on the back burner. She wants more but is clearly afraid to step out of the box she put herself in. I don’t know about you, but I know I have done that on many things. It’s what we mom’s do, right? When we do that, though, we forget what we are capable of. Like Josie did. The last paragraphs forced me to take a look at my own life to see what dreams I put away so that I could serve everyone else.

Then walks in Mr. McHottie, Austen, her blast from the past. He challenges her to take her dreams and goals off the shelf. To dust off her talents and see where things go. And maybe even take a chance on love. I love how he pushed her, just ever so slightly. His gentle patience is endearing. She pushes him back though. But if you love someone enough you fight for them, even if it is the person you are battling.

Honestly, there isn’t a thing wrong with this book. It is easy to read and easy to get lost in. I’d recommend tossing it in your beach bag next to your sunscreen and walk to the beach and get lost for a bit. Or at least pretend you’re at the beach. Your nerves will thank you.

One of the most romantical books I've ever read. Truly toe-curling, fainting-couch-is-a-necessity divine. Because...August!!!! He's a man on a mission and executes his tactical strategies with artistic flare. This is a deeply layered love story -- so full of tenderness and compassion. And patience!!!! The way August slowly, deliberately coaxes Josie out of her self-imposed 'prison' is absolutely breathtaking. I am head over heels for August forever!!!!!

And Josie is so lovable while being sweetly exasperating at the same time. She has this amazing talent that she's hidden away out of fear and a misguided sense of loyalty to her father and so many other folks she's forever helping out. What a complex heroine! I was really touched by her journey of self-discovery which spoke to my life in a very personal way.

T. I. Lowe has imbued her story with a sustaining faith thread that quietly works its way through these characters' lives. Never preachy, but it is so obviously a foundation for the entire novel, that the story would unravel without it.

I listened to the audible edition of this book because...Amy Rubinate narrates it and she is one of my favourite narrators! I was going to buy the print version since I have the first book in this series in paperback but when I saw that Amy was the narrator I clicked on 'add to cart' in a nano-second. And started listening right away. This author/narrator combination is a bibliophile's nirvana!

Oh -- and though this is the second book in the Carolina Coast series, you can totally read it as a standalone. But be forewarned: once you've read Driftwood Dreams you'll be rushing to grab a copy of Beach Haven so you'll be all set for August 4 when Sea Glass Castle releases. Squeeeeee! I can't wait!

Driftwood Dream by TI Lowe is the second book on the Carolina Coast. Last week I read the third book - not realizing it was a series. This week I thought I started at the beginning, but no - I guess I will read them backward, which hasn’t dampened my desire to read them all.

In this novel, we meet Josie Slater, a young woman who is giving and kind. She never puts her wants and desires before anyone else and ends up trapped in a life without realizing that she has given up everything. She manages her father’s diner and has two besties - The Sand Queens! Then August (person not month) returns and suddenly her world changes. Josie is actually unable to speak with him at first and slowly August is able to draw her out and bring her to life with her art.

I enjoyed the novel and the love story of August and Josie. I liked the slow progression Josie began to make away from her life of helping everyone else but herself. I loved her friends and how they were such a lifeline for her. I enjoyed reading Driftwood Dream by TI Lowe.

Too good for words!
I finished this book in one day and I loved every minute of it. Josie and August have a past. A past that includes plans gone awry and buried dreams. August is back in town and says he’s here to stay. But shy Josie has had her share of disappointments and isn’t sure she can let him in.
This was so beautiful and Ms Lowe did an absolutely stunning job of visual storytelling. Vivid descriptions made these black & white pages come alive with vibrant colors and beautiful scenes.
There is just so much I love about this series and I feel like I’ve known these characters my whole life. They are just like real people with real human struggles and imperfections. I loved this so much!

This is book two in T.I. Lowe’s Carolina Coast series and I totally picked it up because I read book one. That being said, you can read Driftwood Dreams as a standalone and not worry about missing anything.

The biggest reason I liked Driftwood Dreams is because of August Bradford. What a hero! He’s so sweet and patient with Josie and I just love how he coax’s her out of her shell. I love how art brings them together and bridges Josie’s uncertainty with life.

In fact, I like most of the art scenes in this book. I’m not an artist but I could vividly picture the scenes and they made me smile.

Both of the characters go through a change but Josie’s is the biggest and I won’t give anything else away but to say, the ending is great and the epilogue is icing on the cake.

Finally! a happily ever after at the beginning!
I wasn't sure how much I would like a book about Josie, but I liked it a lot!
I appreciate all the details about August and his brother growing up, Josie and Miss Dalma's friendship, the hilarious competition and comeaderie between Jasper and Nan.
This installment of the Carolina Coast Series is filled with so much fun and small town goings on, I couldn't put it down!
Can't wait to get #3!

This takes place in South Carolina between spring and summer. The story is told by Josie and August. This is their second chance at romance. Both of the characters have had some tough times but are trying to move forward and find happiness. Josie definitely has a harder time with this. The romance was the focus of the story, but faith, family, and friendship are also important.
