Davis creates a new world that readers are sure to enjoy!
Alonzo Consentino leads a very influential Borgata in Sicily that has been in his family for generations. People look to him for protection and fortunately things have been relatively calm. That all changes one night when a young man shows up at his house with a mutilated hand who claims that a neighboring Borgata killed his parents in cold blood because they felt insulted. Alonzo knows that he must retaliate but hates to shed more blood. Violence continues to grow and the killings become more personal until Alonzo decides he has no choice but to immigrate to America with his family. Once in America, Alonzo realizes that he doesn’t have the status he enjoyed in Sicily. With little money to get buy, he accepts a loan to start a barbershop. With hopes to raise his kids with integrity, the past begins to catch up to them in their new home. Can he keep his family safe? Or are his children doomed to repeat the sins of their father?
Davis does an incredible job of building story worlds. First creating the worlds of Rome and the surrounding countryside in his Sertoris novels and now bringing prohibition New York to life. I was easily transported to this setting and felt like I was a part of the story throughout the entire book. I enjoyed being a part of the story and getting to see the characters flesh out. Watching Sonny grow up and understand how he become the man that parts of the book alluded to were very interesting. I haven’t read much in the way of mafia novels, but I enjoyed this one so much that I think it would make a great movie.
One drawback that I have is that I was not able to relate to Sonny Consentino the way that I was able to relate to Quintus Sertoris from Davis’s previous books. I’m not sure why and it didn’t take away from the story, but the connection just wasn’t there for me. The story was still amazing, and I recommend it to readers who love historical fiction and mafia novels. There is some occasional foul language throughout the book, some implied sex scenes, and mentions of a statutory rape. I recommend this book for mature readers.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
I have read each of Mr. Davis' books and admit to being intrigued by this one before I even opened it, since his first four all take place and are focused on ancient Rome. I have thoroughly enjoyed each of his first books, but Sins of the Father is different.
It is different because of this: while the Sertorious and Marius books are great reads, your subconscious will hint that maybe Mr. Davis is hiding something from us, which surfaces in Sins. I refer to his writing style really coming out! This is not to speak poorly of his first books, rather illustrate just how much stronger this one is. Hooked from the start, the attention to detail to help the reader know the setting without difficulty (the fonts used: block for the hearing, italic for the past, etc.). This is by far Vincent Davis' best work, as far as I am concerned, and that says a lot because I absolutely love his earlier writings, and his books have certainly earned their own section on my bookshelf. As always, the only part of this book that I do not like, is the fact that I finished it and must wait for the next installment.... but that's really all a part of the fun, now isn't it?
I've said this on all of my reviews for Davis books: this writer is going places; but this time, I need to change it up: This writer has exploded onto the scene of truly talented writers that make you wonder how they became so gifted and when you can get their next book. Before too long, Vincent Davis will be a household name for all readers.... at least the ones with good taste.
Bravo to you, yet again, Vincent, and thank you for continuing to share your gift with us readers!
This is so different from the usual type of mafia books I read and I loved it!! I was sucked in from the first couple of pages and couldn’t put it down. I love the characters, the setting, the politics, the relationships - basically everything.
The only reason for a star being knocked off the rating is the ending of the book. It was anticlimactic (even though I did know this is a duology and I would need to go on to the next one). I was expected a really big scene not just a reveal that was heavily hinted at.
I still loved every second I spent reading it and will be jumping right into book 2
Sins of The Father, the first novel in the Consentino Crime Saga, is a brilliant portrayal of the Consentino family. When Alonzo Consentino leaves the crime and violence of life in Sicily for the Promised Land, little does he know that his children will be sucked back in the Mafia life he left behind. This novel has it all: crime, corruption, passion, loyalty, all within a sinister fraternity. By the end of this book, I was fully engaged in the happenings of the Consentino’s and can’t wait to read the next novel in this well-written page-turner.
I have to say this was a very compelling story. And the character development is well done. Although the only reason I don’t give it a 5 star is you can tell the author is an amateur. Some of the dialogue was very cheesy and too cliche and repetitive. BUT the story in itself makes up for that and honestly it did get better in the latter half of the book, which was interesting. I’m interested to see the character AND author developments in the next book, Blood of the Sons!
This normally isn’t the type of book I’d read but it was a book club pick. It had all the potential to be a really good book but lacked immersing you into the story. There were not vivid descriptions of the people and places and left you having to piece something together yourself. Although it started out slow, the plot really pulled you in and left you with a good cliff hanger at the end. I think as the author improves his writing, this series could become something great.
This is the second book of Mr. Davis’ that I’ve read . and I loved it. He truly brings the characters to life. This is one of those books that, when forced to put it down, you find yourself thinking about the characters until you can pick the book back up again. I love the 20s and found the book to be period specific and loved his descriptions. Can’t wait for the next in the series!
The story, ripped from the pages of history is thrilling and engaging. It reads much like the Godfather novels, but includes great detail about real places and events. I look forward to the next book in the series. The teaser really wets the appetite.
This is a very well written recounting of the early years of the mafia. One can not help but to become engaged with these characters and even to become fond of them. How much of this story is true and how much is myth ? Who can tell? The book is so well written and entertaining that it really does not matter.
Very good book. It paints a clear picture in your head. Another great mob story. There were a lot of different Italian names so I got a few of them confused for a split second lol.
A little slow at first but then I didn't want to stop reading!! There is a lot of back & forth: past present, etc. Story is told from multiple viewpoints. Story does end with a small cliffhanger.
Fascinating story of a Sicilian borgata, which forces the family to flee to America and start fresh in the midst of a vendetta gone wrong. Strong start to a series that builds a solid framework going forward and leaves you anticipating the next book with its ending.
A well-written book that covers both life in Italy and the US. An interesting read and was sorry when it ended. Now I am watching for book 2 in the series!!
