Before I began my minimalist journey, I was tasked with decluttering my mother’s home during a difficult period. I was both emotional and distressed by the daunting task of losing countless possessions I had grown up with. Each item had been brought into the home by my mother’s hand and felt impossible to let go . The stress brought on by the task carried over into my own home, where I realized a change needed to be made. I needed a way to shed the burden of clutter and lead a more intentional life. No offense to the author and how she likes to live, it's just not for me. I thought this would be an encouraging book to get me started on decluttering and organizing, but really here are my takeaways: - paint everything white - don't set anything out except plants - get rid of anything you don't think you need. If you find out later that you did need it, buy something better.
I don't have the money to do that and I like living in more color. Next.
This is a good BASIC overview of how to start living a minimalist lifestyle. The author takes you through each room of your house and explains how to de clutter and even how to set up or lightly decorate each room. She also gives tips on how to live an intentional life and maintain the minimalist way of life. Things like avoiding beautiful downtown shopping boutiques that will tempt you to buy and unfollowing stores on Instagram that will also tempt you.
One of the best pieces of advice that I found in this book was to wait at least 24 hours before making purchases. Sit down in the meantime and ask yourself if you really need that item, if there is something else in your house that could serve that purpose and why you suddenly want that item (was it due to an add you saw?).
Using this advice and being more intentional has helped me create calm and peace in my own home, made it so much easier to organize and clean my home (which leads to me being less stressed) and most importantly has helped me be more content and saved me money!
If you want to live a more intentional life and start creating a minimalist life but don’t know where to start, this book is a great place to begin. If you, like me, are already living this way but are always looking for more tips or ideas, this book probably will only tell you what you already know.
I have paged through and read many decluttering and getting organized books. I took away several good ideas from this one. One tip/suggestion that sticks with me is to eliminate or quiet the interruptions from popups, text and emails notifications that interrupt a work session period. It take about 20 minutes to refocus after being interrupted. What a major time waste😜Another tip I use is the one in/one out theory. I use this and find it helpful. I didn't like the suggestion of decluttering my backyard. Outside is my safe haven and I love to have all different types of flowers and bushes and herbs growing. My yard isn't streamed lined it is not cluttered either. It is Full. Full of life, color, smell and growth and decay. It's the full cycle of life🌹🌷🦋😊
For a book that claims to be a minimalist guide to home organization, this book advises the reader to purchase many things that she claims are essential, while getting rid of things that you only use infrequently. After all if you need it again, she says, you can just go buy another. She also advises you to paint all your rooms white, and have monochromatic color schemes. The yard should be rocks and grasses. Nothing that requires any effort, and nothing with any color.
I think she has confused minimalism with conformity and removal of any sensory stimuli. I found it most unhelpful.
This book provides easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for various rooms in your home then covers how to live like a minimalist once your home is decluttered. I don't agree with some of the author's viewpoints but overall the book is easy to read and is well written. I don't believe everyone can afford to "just buy better" and I don't agree with getting rid of family heirlooms and antiques, but that's just me.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It give a nice base for your decluttering your house. I wish it had dealt more when the emotional side of why we keep the things we do & how to overcome the feelings of anxiety when getting rid of them. I wouldn’t really recommend this book because even though it’s “correct” in what it says it doesn’t deal with any of the deeper issues that would help solve your problems in the first place.
Good motivator to declutter during the coronavirus shelter-in-place instruction. Too granola for me with getting rid of dryer sheets as that doesn't really speak to minimalism for me. 90 days of use seems too aggressive as we look to shed our possessions, but the intentions are good.
Good tips for someone just starting out with minimalism. Like any book in this genre, you are just going to have to draw out what works best for you and your home and leave the rest. Not everything in the book will be practical for you.
Basics on minimalism. Nothing that I did not know, which is why I rated it low, but it would be a nice book for someone who has no idea about how minimalism works or should look like. I expected to get new insights that might help me, but unfortunately I didn’t get any.
Very basic but you might find a couple ideas if you're new to minimalist concepts. However, I disagree with some aspects including the constant choice of white because you don't have to be bland to live minimally. Color can create joy and peace in your minimal home.
Wow! This book is a really helpful guide to declutter a person’s home and life. If you are anything like me your closet is probably full of clothes that don’t fit and kitchen is full of small appliances never used. If that sounds like you, read this!
I will admit I did the audiobook version and I wished I had read it instead. I still found the advice practical and easy to follow. It’s a good start and I enjoyed the simple to follow advice.
