I really enjoyed this one! An entertaining, clever and suspenseful psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.
I picked this one up on a day trip to the book store, I was swayed by the blurb which sounded like a fun read and it certainly was.
Five Women.... They met at the NCT Group. The only thing they have in common is they’re all pregnant. Five Secrets...... Three years later, they’re all good friends. Aren’t they? One missing husband.......... He’s disappeared with a life- changing amount of money. Now the police have come knocking.
A short novel, under 300 pages and just the fun, suspenseful summertime read I love, it has the suspense, the entertainment, full of likeable and dislikable characters and a plot that just kept me guessing right to the end and I loved that ending.
I think readers who enjoy novels like Big Little Lies might well enjoy this one too.
I devoured The Mothers in one sitting it is excessively addictive with a terrific cast of characters and an involving, emotionally resonant, twisty mystery.
Sarah J Naughton is a masterful plotter with a keen eye for divisive, entertaining and authentic characters. Any parent will relate to the sometimes funny, sometimes sad vagaries of parenting and the mystery element is steeped in atmosphere as we watch this group of Mum’s come together and fall apart in equal measure.
Then of course there’s the missing husband. Where did he go? Well many scenario’s present themselves for your consideration as the narrative moves between past and present, the ending when it comes is hugely satisfying and beautifully done.
Bonds bend and break but one thing remains…most of us have someone who we’d call to help bury the body, whether literal or metaphorical. This book will make you seriously consider who that person might be. I think for me it would be Katherine Armstrong (sorry Katherine I’ll try to never actually kill anyone) I’m sure the author has her own person with a spade on speed dial…
The Mothers is a fantastic read, one of friendship, love, betrayal and those human connections we all seek every day.
A group of five women formed a friendship when they met at their antenatal group. Now, several years later they are still friends and see each other regularly. But one of their husbands has gone missing. The police have been called....
I'm afraid this is one of those books that I can't say too much about. The book explores: friendships, motherhood and secrets. The characters relationships were complex. It's well written and thought out. Grab yourself a copy of this book you won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed this story.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Orion Publishing Group and the author Sarah J Naughton for my ARC in exchange for an honest review
5 stars! Ha! This was really good! Totally unexpected, well twisted, smart and - I must admit - quite emotional at times, too.
A circle of mothers bound by the baby issues, antenatal worries and first tooth problems. Do those mommy groups ever grow beyond nappy rash and milk supply chats?
Bella is one of them. A happy mom but not as happy as a wife. Things gone a bit stale, she got a bit frumpy. It all goes through the same cycle - day in, day out. Until one day Bella's husband, Ewan, disappears. Was he having an affair? Did something happen to him? Or did he just take off in search of a better life?
Bella had past mental health issues and it is hard for her to grasp life as it is. And now, when he husband is missing she needs her friends. Are they good friends though? Isn't there always that bit of jealousy, a bit of slagging behind each others' backs? Besides, everyone has their own problems.
I love how each character showed unexpected sides - good and not so good. They are do well and craftily created that each time a new side came to light, it was unexpected and brought the whole dynamic of the book to a new level.
I found a few episodes also very moving. Despite first not liking Bella, I rooted for her. And it was so touching how her friends realised that despite her issues, she actually was always there for each and every one of them, when they needed help or support. It is so true! Those, who are most vulnerable and most fragile, are usually the ones that always put their shoulder up to lean on. And they are the last to ask for help themselves.
I was a little let down by Iona's character. I thought she'd be a center figure. But she was not. It did not spoil the story though.
Five women, Chrissy, Electra, Skye, Jen, and Bella – all very diverse personalities and who, on the face of it, only have one thing in common. Children. They wouldn’t normally be friends if they hadn’t met at an ante natal group. For some reason their friendship has endured and they continue to meet for drinks at each other’s houses, even though it sometimes seems that they actually don’t really like each other very much.
The main focus of the story is Bella and her husband Ewan. Bella reports her husband missing – the police ask some questions but don’t really seem worried as there doesn’t seem to be any suspicious circumstances – that is until something else comes to light and a whole new slant is thrown on the investigation.
The story counts down between the past and the present to tell the events leading up to the disappearance and the time after. It’s not a fast paced read but more of a character driven one as instead we hear from each woman’s perspective – their lives and their relationships (none of them seem to be very happy or content).
I wasn’t sure that I particularly liked any of the Mothers although there were one or two that I felt more sympathetic towards. Knowing each of their stories in more detail gave another dimension into their friendship. It’s not just a straightforward story of motherhood and relationships however. There are secrets and betrayals and although I had an idea as to part of the story, I was totally taken by surprise by what is actually revealed.
The Mothers is a suspenseful and cleverly plotted thriller and is something a little bit different in this genre. I enjoyed it.
4.5 ! I binge read this book ! And while the concept was not particularly original ( think big little lies ) I thought this was very well written & the characters very well developed
If real life hadn't gotten in the way, I would have devoured THE MOTHERS is one sitting! It is brilliant, compelling and so completely addictive with a twist that just deliciously clever. My first read by Sarah J. Naughton had me turning the pages though my eyelids were drooping on 2 hours sleep. A totally unexpected well twisted and ingenious read, THE MOTHERS has an easy reading style that draws you in from the first page.
Five women from different walks of life, who would probably never normally cross paths, meet at an antenatal group and become friends. Beyond their birth of their babies, the women form their own informal "mothers group" where they get to unwind for a few hours in each others company and not be judged.
But life is about to get a little more complicated for them and bring the women closer in a way they never would have imagined.
Bella gave up work to become a stay at home mum but since Teddy's birth feels that her husband Ewan no longer sees her in the same way. She's middle-aged, frumpy and putting on weight where she was once a slim and beautiful. Not only that, Bella suffered post partum psychosis which had her delusional and erratic. Does Ewan see her differently since then? Because he certainly doesn't seem to want her now. In an attempt to boost her self esteem, Bella gets herself a job in a department store where she thrives and enjoys every moment...particularly coming home to Teddy's face lighting up when she walks in the door. But life with Ewan is difficult. He's moody, secretive and snappy. Is he having an affair? Or is it porn he's looking at when he locks himself in his study every night for hours on end?
And then Bella's world begins to fall apart when she starts to see things again. Blood in an uncracked egg. A tiger stalking towards her. A butterfly wing. Spiders in her pockets. And when she sees Ewan defaced in their wedding photo she wonders...did she do that? And forgot about it? Is she getting ill again?
Chrissy is a successful divorce lawyer living in the affluent area of Chelsea. She is married to Russell and they have beautiful baby Chloe. But Chrissy is unhappy and restless. Her job may be lucrative but it is also unfulfilling with selfish wives demanding more than they need to survive divorce.
Then she meets Atanis, the builder working on their new basement extension, and with him she feels she can be herself with no judgement. Russell is away or at the pub so often their clandestine meetings go undiscovered and although she knows it is not forever, Chrissy dreads the day when she must bid him goodbye.
Electra is mother to twins Pearl and Ozzy, whose conception came as something of a surprise to her and her younger boyfriend Zack. Living in a basement flat, she struggles daily with Ozzy who is so far removed from his placid sister. One day at the supermarket, Ozzy laid himself down in front of the pram and refused to budge...even with customers tutting and trying to get past. Electra was beside herself with frustration and embarrassment but no amount of pleading or cajoling would budge Ozzy. When she moved him herself and plonked him into the pram, strapping him in, she was then accused by an onlooker of kicking him.
Days later, a social worker was on their doorstep outlining an incident had come to their attention where her children's safety was no in question. But it was Bella who made a suggestion as to a possible reason for Ozzy's behaviour which made Electra delve further for more information.
Skye has tattoos, her hair in dreadlocks and lives aboard a boat on the river with her baby daughter Juniper. The love of her life, Pedro, as well as being Juniper's father, is gay and has met the man of his dreams, Felippe. The two of them adore Juniper so much that they want to share that love with a child of their own and give Juniper a sibling. And they want Skye to carry the child.
And then there is Jen, the youngest and most spirited of the women. She has the saddest tale to tell. While their pregnancies brought them together and their babies unite them as mothers, Jen has no child. All her babies have been stillborn. It seems both her and her boyfriend Eliot carry a gene that will deform their child so horribly that if they survived birth they would not live very long afterwards.
Each woman has their own story. Their own demons. Their own secrets. But together they are one.
Then one night each of the women get a call from the other in what sets of a chain of events. Bella awoke from a drunken night with her friends to the most horrific discovery. And she knows she is responsible...
Enter DI Iona Chatwin and her partner Yannis who are tasked with the disappearance of Ewan Upton. The pair question Bella and then each of the women in turn...until they discover Jen is also missing. Have the two high-tailed it together? But when they discover blood in Jen's flat with her phone still on the table and some broken crockery, Iona begins to suspect foul play. And how is it connected to Ewan's disappearance?
THE MOTHERS has a touch of drama, a hint of contemporary fiction and a load of mystery with secrets, thrills and twists in abundance.
Told in dual timelines, playing out from three years earlier and the present day, THE MOTHERS then shifts the story to "before" and "after"...an event which binds the women and is at the heart of this well written story. We hear from each of the women as their stories unfold as well as from Iona, the detective investigating Ewan's disappearance.
I loved each of the women for their uniqueness of characters. All of them had secrets and hidden insecurities which made them vulnerable and bound the story tighter. I did not, however, love Ewan. He was a despicable and completely unlikeable character. He treated his wife first with indifference and then open beligerance and pure nastiness. Even doing so in front of Jen, who was their childminder while Bella was at work, smirking as if it were a joke. He was a hypocrite, a narcissist and a downright horrible person. I thought Bella was well shot of him and hoped he never came back.
I did like Iona but felt that she wasn't as believable as the other characters in the story. She appeared to lack the confidence a Detective Inspector would surely have and had no clue on what to make of each of the women. She didn't seem to figure anything out and spent most of her time mooning about a colleague, despairing the fact that she would be straight and not in her league. I felt that too much was made of the fact Iona was gay especially as she mooned over the abovementioned colleague constantly. It should have been more important that she was the police detective tasked with the investigation at hand, not the fact that she is gay. But then I had to ask myself why was she written as gay when there were an overt number of gay characters added to the story - five in total. While their sexuality did appear to have their own unique parts to play in the story, only Iona and the last one, which I felt was merely added for the sake of it, I felt didn't really need to be written as gay. In fact, I think Iona would have been a far stronger character and better detective if she wasn't.
Aside from that, though, all the other characters were complex with nice juicy stories to easily absorb oneself into the intricate web Ms Naughton weaved. Although I did work out the "who" of the mystery, it wasn't until it was being played out that the "how" and "why" became apparent. Intricately brilliant and cleverly woven, THE MOTHERS is most certainly one of those "just one more chapter" books that keep your reading into the night!
I thoroughly recommend this book to fans of a good well-written psychological domestic thriller with a difference!
I would like to thank #SarahJNaughton, #NetGalley and #Trapeze for an ARC of #TheMothers in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book. Although slightly predictable it was still a fun read I was actually on the edge of my seat.
You have these mothers who met at a prenatal class and although they are completely different they stayed in communication. So when one of the ladies husband goes missing suspicion is on everyone, they are all hiding something but what is it they aren't telling one another.
I just loved this because it had you standard thriller lay our but it also really talked about the struggles of being a new parent. They are all struggling with their kids but for a variety of reasons.
This is one of those books I've heard so much about I had to read and it didn't let me down. If you hate reading a book that is quite predicted then please don't even start this book. But if like me you want to see how the author goes from A to Z then pick this up and enjoy. It is easy to read and there are a few funny moments. We jump from past to present and we go from each woman and when they throw a dinner party and things around them. So quick to read as well so yeah 4 stars 🌟 recommend
Five very different women all attended the same NCT Group during their pregnancies. Despite that being the only thing they had in common over the years they carry on meeting regularly until the morning after one of their usual meetups Bella wakes up to find her husband missing.
The Mothers is told from multiple points of view, with each of the five women in The Mothers Club getting their own chapters, alongside chapters from the point of view of Iona, the Detective Inspector investigating the disappearance and a number of throwback chapters detailing some of The Mothers Club meetups over the years. While each chapter is headed with the name of the character whose viewpoint we’re following and the timeframe the chapter covers ensuring each viewpoint change was clear the book still felt confused to me.
Much of the early part of the story is told from the point of view of the detective, with flashbacks to The Mothers Club meetings over the years. I had really mixed feelings about these chapters, I love a police procedural, and if you’re a regular visitor to SWB you’ll know that to be the case but The Mothers doesn’t fully embrace this genre. If I’m honest I didn’t really understand the relevance of a lot of the Iona’s chapters. It felt to me that an unusual amount of her chapters were spent with her being concerned about how Maya saw her, or if Maya was sleeping with her Detective Sergeant. I kept expecting something about Maya to become crucial to the plot but it never does, instead I was left thinking that so much emphasis was put on Iona’s sexuality to show how diverse the author could be. It all just felt a little forced and given too much focus given the lack of any relevance to the main plot. Perhaps it’s the sort of sub-plot that works better in a series where I’ve developed a bit of a connection to a central character and care about them, in this case I just wanted to get on with discovering what had happened to the husband.
The second half of the book transitions into what feels more like a character driven psychological thriller with chapters from the point of view of each of the mothers revealing more and more of the plot along the way. I felt like in this second half of the book it began to show its strengths. The chapters written from the mothers’ points of view certainly felt more intriguing as more of the plot was revealed, the tension slowly building. The very last chapter in particular was an interesting reveal and I was pleased to see my suspicions were proven correct. What let it down for me was the fact I just didn’t really like any of the characters, none of them really came across in any sort of positive way to me. Additionally the more I discovered about Ewan the less I really cared about what had happened to him.
Final Thoughts I won’t lie, I was disappointed by this one. I really wanted to love it, I included it in my Most Anticipated Adult Reads Of 2020 post but it just didn’t quite hit the right notes for me. I felt it was a little confused about what it wanted to be: a police procedural style crime novel or a character driven psychological thriller. For me it never hit the highs of either style of book, and crucially at the areas where it leaned more towards the latter I just didn’t like the characters enough to really care…
A group of five women formed a friendship when they met at antenatal group. Now, several years later, theynare still friends and see each other regularly. But one of their husbands is missing. The police have been called....
I'm afraid this is one of these books that I can't say too much about. The book explores: friendships, motherhood and secrets. The characters relationships are complex. It's well written and thought out. Grab yourself a copy of this book you won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed this story.
Knyga apie motinystę be vienaragių vyniojimo į cukraus pudrą.
Velnias, kaip man patiko! Nesitikėjau NĖ PRO KUR. Juk trileris!
Šis pasakojimas man puikiai iliustravo pasakymą, kad nelaimingos šeimos būna kiekviena savaip - visos skirtingai.
This book has left me speechless. Honestly it's amazing. It started off a little slow and I was a bit wary but it soon picked up and WOW I did not want to put it down! Everyone needs to read this!!
I loved the characters and the true spirit of friendship throughout the book - Bella, Electra, Skye, Chrissy and Jen. It showed the jealousy and strength of friendship and how even the lives that look perfect on the outside can actually be awful. I just loved the whole story, I loved the twists, I loved how I didn't guess any of it, even at the end. I'm a happy speechless and I need to read more from this author.
This was the best psychological thriller I have read in a long time (I didn't guess all the twists, yay!) and I loved the exploration of women's friendships, especially when all they had in common was the ages of their children. BUT the ignorance about autism in this book is outstanding! Minor spoiler about how autism comes up in the book . From the stereotypical "symptoms" to the assessment process and, most ridiculously of all, the diagnosis that "he is only level one". Where to even start on that one? I have literally never heard of that term being used in the UK, where this is set, and I have both personal and professional experience of autism. (Minor spoiler once more) . I get the feeling that the author just did a cursory google before introducing this plot point and to me it's far too important a topic to treat in such an offhand and poorly researched manner, even if it was comparatively a minor plot point. Final moan with minor spoiler once more .
Tikrai perskaičiusi to nepasakyčiau.
This was an absorbing tale that cleverly weaves together the lives of five seemingly very different women. One incident ties them together in this thrilling narrative of a missing husband.
I had quite a hard time with this book as it was riddled with clichés, clunky writing and a very predictable plot. The characters themselves read like caricatures that handled serious topics such as alcoholism, autism, feminism and mental health issues insensitively and poorly. Naughton doesn't seem to know what an ethical vegan is (makes the character worry about her child not being able to wear wool, eating literal ham at one point etc), uses performative feminism as a symptom of untreated trauma caused by rape, portrays a potential autism diagnosis in a young child as a huge disaster and the list goes on. The way the women describe each other's bodies is appalling and they don't seem to have anything in common with each other expect going to a prenatal class about giving birth.
Spoilers ahead:
The fact that the women don't really seem to like each other or at least don't have a deep bond because of the starkly different lives they lead made it hard for me to believe that they'd cover up a murder in order to protect Bella. Not even real and strong friendship would withstand this test of loyalty and sacrifice if they'd get caught, ignoring the possibility of being afraid of your murderous friend. Also, I didn't really care that the guy got killed because he was highly toxic, gambled away the money, committed fraud to fuel his gambling addiction and blamed the wife for spending too much money. The slight twist that Jenny killed Ewan and not Bella didn't surprise me in the slightest. She was the only one that would've had a reason and chance to do so. I just couldn't help but roll my eyes when the last chapter started with Jenny expressing how she wasn't born with the sense of empathy, how she is barely capable of feeling ANY emotion and therefore killing a guy that hate fucked her came easy to her. "Psychopaths" like these further the horrible stigma people with the disorder suffer from and it's such a cop out to use that as a reason why she went to such lengths to silence Ewan.
For many reasons this book just wasn't for me, I predicted the outcome and didn't connect with any character. A shame because I've heard many raving reviews. Half a star because I actually finished the book.
The Mothers alternates between present events and the history of the five mothers, starting three years earlier after they’d met at prenatal classes. Bella, Electra, Chrissy, Jen and Skye couldn’t be more different if they tried, but somehow they work. Or do they? When Bella’s husband vanishes it’s clear that this is just the tip of the iceberg, that there’s more to the mothers than you see at first glance. A police investigation ensues, but this is in no way a police procedural. While there are chapters from the POV of Detective Inspector Iona Chatwin, and these are entertaining enough, it’s the mothers who steal the show. I liked Iona, a lot, and if she has one trait in common with the mothers, it’s that there’s more to her than meets the eye. Still, it wasn’t Iona I was rooting for…
I would love to tell you more, I would love to tell you a lot more, from the tiny gripe I had to everything I loved about The Mothers, but the thing is, I can’t. This is a story you need to experience for yourselves, you need to peel back the layers yourselves and see what’s underneath, and the less I tell you, the better. Just know that The Mothers is extremely compelling, I got sucked in from the start, and I loved the great many secrets the mothers have and their slow unravelling while the women themselves are starting to come apart at the seams as well.
Some excellent characterisation here too. Before long the mothers cease to be characters and have become real people, flawed people caught between a rock and a hard place. You notice yourself rooting for them, although at the same time you know full well they are still keeping secrets from you, and you realise that your faith in them, your hopes for them may very well blow up in your face.
Shocking start to equally shocking finish, I was utterly obsessed with the mothers and The Mothers, and I literally put everything on hold for the need to uncover the truth!
This was such an easy enjoyable read with a great cast of characters or should we say suspects? I loved how about a third of the way through, the group of five get given cocktails based on their personalities. I would be a hanky panky (make of that what you will). These five would never have been friends had it not been for meeting at NCT, they are exceedingly different but it works. Bella, Chrissy, Sky, Electra and Jen each with their own problems whether that is personal, financial , work or kid related. They all come to enjoy their meet ups. I really liked all five of the women for varying reasons and I loved that the author gave them such well rounded back stories. Then we have the police investigating the disappearance of first Ewan Bella's husband and then shortly followed by Jen one of the group of women. Is there a connection? Nobody seems to be telling the whole truth and something seems off to Iona the lead detective on the case. Told in a dual timeline you get to follow the current investigation while also getting to learn of each characters past from when their friendships were first formed. A cleverly constructed plot with some nice little surprises , characters that feel like friends , a police procedural and a mystery there is something here for everyone.
Five women from different walks of life meet at an NCT group and become firm friends. Through a the ups and downs of domestic life, love, pain and children they are there for each other. Bella’s husband disappears and the police are investigating his disappearance and suspect the ladies have some involvement. What a bloody good read this was. The characters are built up well and you can sympathise with them all. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
The Mothers is a standalone psychological thriller and I can honestly say I bloody LOVED it and couldn’t put it down.
Five very different women met at an ante-natal group three years ago and continue to meet up regularly despite their differences and diverse personalities. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that they were all pregnant at the same time.
When one of the women, Bella, reports her husband Ewan missing to the police, the story then takes on a dual timeline with the current police investigation and the past leading up to Ewan’s disappearance.
Initially I get concerned with books that have multiple characters but honestly, these five women are brilliant, each one dealing with their own dark past and current predicaments bringing an extra layer of depth to the storyline. These are mothers with real issues which you can’t help relate to or sympathise with.
With so many characters there are going to be some you love, some you hate and some that really move you and I was absolutely gripped by all of them from the opening paragraph to the end.
The Mothers is a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions, twists, secrets and shocking betrayals. A story of friendship and loyalty which I thoroughly recommend to all lovers of psychological thrillers.
Some entertaining characters. Some emotional parts that pull on the heartstrings. But a level of predictability had this one fall slightly flat for me.
The Mothers is a very compelling addictive read which I thoroughly enjoyed. The easy writing style soon drew me into the story and allowed me to just relax and enjoy it.
The story is told from two different storylines, one in the present day following the police as they try to solve Ewan’s disappearance and the other in the past following the five women’s friendship. I found I enjoyed both threads equally as it was great to follow the fabulous Iona in her investigation but also fun to learn more about the women and their past histories.
I have to admit I didn’t particularly warm to any of the woman though I did feel a lot of sympathy for Bella who I felt was treated badly by everyone. I often wished that I knew her personally so I could be the friend I felt she needed. Her husband Ewan was an awful person who only seemed to care about himself. I found myself hoping that he wouldn’t come back as I felt Bella would be much happier without him.
The two storylines come together nicely with lots of twists and false leads that kept me guessing what was going on until the end. I loved watching everything unfold and trying to guess what would happen. The ending was more dramatic then I expected which was a nice surprise and I thought it was a great way to end the book.
I’ve read every book this author has written and in my opinion she keeps getting better and better. I’m very excited to see what she comes up with next.
Huge thanks to Alainna from Orion books for inviting me onto the blog tour and for my copy of this book via Netgalley. If you like Lianne Moriarty’s then I think you’ll like this book too as the styles are similar.
