This is the McPhail that we read when my sons were little. Though we enjoyed it, we didn't hunt down more by the author (in our defense, this was before online catalogs and convenient consortiums). Now I am amazed to learn how prolific he is.
Anyway, thousands of picture-books later, I still think this is wonderful. Perfect for reading aloud, and rereading, as it's all about the father and girl talking quietly, and the critters (and door hinges etc.) making louder noises. And so much heart, so much love & joy.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is the one the author is proudest of, and we're both bewildered it's not more popular.
