“Melancholy does not hurt, but makes us see things with a holier eye” Um ótimo complemento a um dos melhores museus que já fui na vida. PS: a handshake in thought from me
Some letters were included and my favorite from those was one addressed to Theo of November 5, 1883, in which Van Gogh describes his melancholy but also discussed why he feels "common sense" for the many is not likened to his own way of thinking.
I"d be curious to read more letters he wrote during the time he was hospitalized and going through psychiatric care. From the few letters I've read here, I feel the most drawn to that period.
I picked this book up at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam a couple years ago and was inspires to finally read it for inspiration before going the the Van Gogh Immersion event in SF recently.
This is a beautiful book of letters and thoughts of Vincent Van Gogh via correspondence of letters to his brother theo, friends Bernard and others. The book is small, but is filled with coloured paintings of Vincent, his letters in printed form and stories of how he used to think about a painting, how he used to write letters with sketches and send and make them an actual painting. The book says there was not even a single clue from his letter that he would be killing himself. His imaginations about the world of art and inspiration can be read in this book. Picked up from van Gogh museum Amsterdam, this book is translated to many versions and must say gave much more insight of Vincent, the person and painter.
This book offers an incredible inside look and analysis of the letters written by Van Gogh, mainly to his brother Theo. It goes into detail about his drawings on certain letters, incredible anecdotes by Vincent, and the relationship between him and his brother.
My only complaint is that I had assumed this book would have more letters in their raw form. While it offers some at the back of the book, I left slightly disappointed by the general lack of them. This, however, does not take away from the value that this books holds to anyone who is a Vincent fan. I recently learn there IS a book with his letters; no commentary, no analysis, just his writing. So, look into that as well! I’m looking forward to it strengthening what this book has offered me. :)
It was amazing for many reasons: the subject (Van Gogh is one of my favorite painters and his life is really intriguing); the careful presentation mixing text, letters and paintings in a beautiful package; and the opportunity to review the wonderful paintings and remember the visits to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the house in Auvers-sur-Oise. That's what we fans do, we try to learn as much as we are able to about the people we admire. It's an easy book to read and it gives much pleasure.
