Tikka Chance on Me

He's the bad-boy biker. She's the good girl working in her family's Indian restaurant. On the surface, nothing about Trucker Carrigan and Pinky Grover's instant, incendiary, attraction makes sense. But when they peel away the layers and the assumptions--and their clothes--everything falls into place. The need. The want. The light. The laughter. They have more in common than they ever could've guessed. Is it enough? They won't know until they take a chance on each other--and on love.

This book was literally amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who likes putting words in their eyeballs-slash-ears.

Pinky and..... her Mr. T have a love story that manages to be dramatic, light-hearted, sexy, achingly romantic and extremely funny. It is like a comic book or a film in its boldness and the effortless way it weaves multiple tones together, which is funny because it also references comic books and films a lot. Everything is great and perfect, is what I’m saying here.

Now have some bullet point details because who really reads paragraphs anyway (she says while reviewing a book she just read for other people who might want to read it).

Hero: sweet, thoughtful, noble, Not Trapped By Standards of Masculinity

Heroine: smart, relatable, witty, bold, Would Definitely Date Her

Sex: frequent, not super explicit (by my painfully explicit standards, anyway), hot

Banter: off the charts, I died

Notable Features: flips biker tropes & has lashings of small-town charm.

Probably one of the shorter romance novellas I've read and oh boy could I have read so much more about these two.

Sharp, witty, with a dash of intensity, chockfull of pop-culture banter, emotion, and swoons. This was a bite of pure deliciousness. It was also my first read by Snyder but won't be my last.

***2.5 Stars***

I really loved Suleikha Snyder's Bollywood and the Beast so I was excited to read this...especially when the blurb mentioned a bad boy biker. Add in the fact that most of my friends loved this book and I was doubley, tripley (is that a word?) excited to jump in....but alas, I find myself in the minority. The book completely fell flat for me.

My two biggest issues were:

(1) there was absolutely no tension between Pinky and Trucker or development of any chemistry between them. They fell into bed, or rather the back of his truck, very easily. While I definitely appreciate how sex positive this book is, and how refreshing it is to see a heroine that doesn't treat sex like a dirty word or an act that needs to happen under the covers with the lights off or on the flip side, isn't treated like a slut or think of herself as one just because she enjoys sex...I needed some buildup between these two. The buildup literally consisted of one scene. That's it. And it wasn't even a scene that got me excited for the possibilities.

(2) the whole bad boy biker/motorcycle club and plot twist was weak and superficial. There was no sense of danger, no grittiness...nothing. It felt underdeveloped and almost like an afterthought to give Trucker some sort of edge...which for the record, he did not have.

With Pinky being an Indian girl, who works at an Indian restuarant run by her parents, this ended up feeling more like a love letter to Indian food (which I was definitely on board with) instead of a romance between two supposed opposites (which I couldn't get on board with).

So, in a nutshell....disappointed reader, party of one, your table is ready.

SO. A bearded Captain America doppelgänger—the Chris Evans kind ( this guy ), motorcycle enforcer, falls for this witty good girl working at her parent's Indian restaurant. (spoiler alert, behind the good daughter's facade, she's a sex driven kitten daydreaming about the hero's bedroom superpowers—in great details ^—^ )

This short story was packed with banter, NERDY REFERENCES, steam and so much spice.
Endearingly sexy and sweet at the same time, I truly enjoyed the fantasy for a little while!

Suleikha Snyder, I'm watching you woman. I need more of this.

An exuberant novella featuring a desi woman dragged back to her miserable small town by family obligation, and the bad-boy-made-worse in a motorcycle gang. Only he's not a racist thug, because screw motorcycle gangs. This is breezily done, with the concentration very much on the thoroughly enjoyable romance which manages to be low angst despite the set up thanks to the hero's cinnamon-rolldom and the heroine's tremendous self possession and common sense. Sex positive, full of funny lines, and with a gorgously warm heart.

It was not what I was expecting and a lot smuttier than I thought it would be. The writing was kind of choppy for me and made it hard for me to enjoy the story.

The premise for the novella sounded really good. However, it just didn’t really work for me. While the sex scenes here were done well, that’s all I can really say about it. Was I supposed to think that these two could really have a HEA or fell in love? There wasn’t really a buildup to anything. No sexual tension or actual feelings. They fell into a sexual relationship and stayed there.

I think that the main reason it didn't work for me was because of the synopsis. Now I love to read short erotic stories and will dive into an insta-love book. However, from the description, you think that you are getting a cute romance novella. Y’all this was just smut trying to give you the feels of a full romance novel.

Just didn’t work for me.

His full lips spread in a wolfish smile, and he mouthed one word: “Soon.” Soon. It was a promise. Possibly a threat. Of what, I still hadn’t quite figured out.

In this story we meet Pinky, a Desi protagonist, who goes away to college. Who returns home to help her sick mother. Who loves her family and traditions but also embraces her American roots. I absolutely loved her. Then we meet Ty, and spoilers, so I’ll just repeat Pinky’s words.

Oh, but he was adorable. A sweetheart in wolf’s clothing.

And what an adorkable sweetheart he was. These two were fire. I loved the connection. I loved that in 72 pages you felt the love. Was it a little inta-love? Yes. Did they jump into bed instantly? Yes. Was the secret so hard to figure out? No. Did I care about any of it?? No. I ate it up as quickly as possible and want more. I need a futuretake with Ty and Pinky’s very traditional mother feeding him and loving this hunky white boy.

I actually found this story refreshing and loved that Pinky owned her sexuality. I read some reviews that angered me becaue they said she wasn’t a “good” Desi girl. That she’s “not as good as everyone thinks.” Omfg!!! Rage!! Becaue she’s a responsible adult having concentual sexual intercourse with an equally responsible adult. I don’t know what her race has to do with who she decides to sleep with? I was floored that in 2019 these ideas are not only alive by shared by so many. I mean *gasp* Women thinking about sex. No!! women having sex!! *double gasp* What is the world coming to!!

In short. This was a novela of two beautiful souls who loved each other instantly. They just knew. They had amazing sex. They ate good food. Stuff happens. They find each other. Honestly, it was pretty amazing.

"He's the bad-boy biker. She’s the good girl working in her family's Indian restaurant." Trucker Carrigan and Pinky Grover should NOT even be attracted to each other, let alone get involved. But who can resist Marvel Cinematic Universe related banter? Or a blond, bearded dude in a Captain America t-shirt? Not these two. Now if only they could sort out the whole "life of crime" thing Trucker's got going on.

Lovely little novella with SO much packed into it - sparks, real affection, serious and believable pain when it looks like all is lost, and a perfect HEA. It was a little strange to me that Pinky's POV was first person and Trucker's was third person. I wouldn't go out of my way to read that POV combo again, but I did get used to it here, and it was well worth it.

This book had a bit of everything. Cuteness, intensity, steam, geekiness and yummy food. I wasn't expecting all of that, judging by the blurb, but it worked.

It's a novella so there's not a lot of depth. And yeah, it's insta-lovey. BUT DONE RIGHT. Pinky and Trucker have a lot of chemistry.

So if you're looking for a fun, short read, then this is it.

It started out really cool and then just swan dived for me somewhere around the first encounter between the two MCs. There was little to no tension between them the entire story, but ESPECIALLY in that first encounter. They met up and fell into bed together, well excuse me, in the back of his pickup in the walmart parking lot, and it had this air of "eh, why not?" which is all well and good for the characters but it did nothing to get the readers emotionally invested.

Then came Ty's job which just... was supposed to complicate things, but the 'complications' were way more superficial than they should have been. At one point he asks her, after the big twist of the story, why me, why now, knowing what you do, would you risk everything and want ME?

She says: "Because you're hot."

She blurted it out but then the hero accepted that as a reasonable, well, reason and was even excited by it. See what I mean when I say superficial? There's no real depth between there interactions, there's not even any depth (other than physically) in the sex. All in all, I'm really disappointed.

Holy novella in a complete package alert. This was a delicious read and hit some unusual buttons for me. This is a read that feminists will enjoy and it had a subtle political side to it that I devoured. For example, phrases like 'home-grown and domestic terrorists', we don't see this reality represented enough. It wasn't jarring in your face mentions but appropriate.

Anyway, the main reason for my enjoyment were the two main characters Pink and Ty. Don't let those names deceive you, these were two characters to die for. Pink was a Punjabi twenty-something who had to desert her independent life and go back home to help with a family issue and Ty was a biker MC leader. In actuality, these things did not define Ty and Pink, their attraction and chemistry defined their relationship most beautifully and it was real.

Do yourself and favour and go read this.

For the first half of this book, I was so charmed I was a hair-trigger away from giving this novella five stars. It lessened in its charm in the second half, but overall I still really liked it.

The set-up here is really fun, and the tone of it reflects that fun. Pinky works at her parent's Indian restaurant, and she has been enjoying lusting from afar one of her customers, Trucker, who is unfortunately part of a biker gang. Trucker is also lusting after her, but like in a cute way where he also is very enthusiastic about mango lassi and Indian pastry, and is polite but confident in his attraction, and I don't quite know how to explain it. Anyway, Pinky's into it, and one day after an unexpected encounter in a Walmart involving Trucker wearing a Captain America shirt and letting his nerd flag fly, they have a steamy hook-up in his truck while it's still sitting in the parking lot of the Walmart, and I was just like THIS IS SO FUN.

Some of the plot after that took away my sense of glee and the joy the characters had been giving off until then. I wasn't super into the Trucker being a secret ATF agent undercover thing. It felt like a bit of a bummer to me in the midst of me having so much fun, but it was a central part of the book, so I'm not sure what to do with that. I loved Trucker and his small town big buff guy image but how secretly underneath he's just a big nerd who and also he's human pillow but with sexy moves. The sex wasn't always to my taste, but I liked the way that Snyder only described bits of it and backed away at certain moments, only to zoom in and get descriptive strategically. The parking lot hookup was the high point, though, unfortunately, and the later sex scenes just weren't as satisfying narratively.

It was refreshing to read about a desi heroine, and Trucker being so unapologetically into her right away was delightful. The descriptions of the Indian food made me salivate. I wish I could eat more Indian food but my intestines really don't like it because of the dairy and the gluten and the spices and now I am sad :(

CW: mention of parent having cancer, gang activities, police raid

I feel very...meh about this book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, it was short and sweet. But that's the thing, it was too short in my opinion and tried doing too many things the limited page space didn't allow for.

My main issue is the insta-love, and I really mean insta-love and not insta-lust, so insta-lovey that even the main characters admit it is. Okay, I will admit that I am way too grayro to like or comprehend insta-love but I do acknowledge that some people do experience it so I tend to give it the benefit of a doubt. But only if the author shows me the chemistry and gives me enough interactions to get invested and believe in it, and I didn't feel like that was the case here, Pinky and Trucker did not spend enough on page (or even off-page) time together for me to wrap my head around those feelings. Which bummed me out because I really like their interactions and if there were more of them I would've 100% believed it, but the two main character spent more time apart than together.

I liked them individually though, how Pinky looks like your stereotypical "good girl" (whatever that even means) but isn't as good as she seems. Reminds me of someone *coughs* *looks around in a non-suspicious manner*. And the fact that Trucker looks big and scary but he's a soft geeky man who just wants to be free, love and be loved. And I also liked the whole discussion around biker gangs and what they entail, which I'm not really familiar with, since they're not a thing where I live.

One of my biggest stumbling blocks with romances, particularly those in novella length, is the compressed time frame that's often a feature. So I will admit, I was a little apprehensive about that aspect of this particular novella going into it. And I think it worked? I'm not sure I can actually see a long term future for these two (is Pinky never going to go visit her parents again and aren't they going to wonder who her partner is and/or if she never has a partner, I have questions) but I really like the connection established between them and it felt so midwestern, it was great. Very glad to finally get this off my to-read shelf.

2.75 - 3 stars.

I got mixed feelings about this one, as though I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it as much as I expected.
The synopsis and writing style were so promising, maybe it would have worked for a book with a good length storyline and not a novella.

I saw this novella described as a "master class", and that's exact what it was for me. Novellas can be so tricky, but this one managed to pack a punch of emotion and realness to it. I was thoroughly engrossed and read it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down.

Review posted on Got Fiction?

Pinky Grover came home from grad school to help her family out while her mom was sick. But it’s been a couple of years and the cancer is in remission, and Pinky is in a rut.

Trucker Carrigan, notorious bad boy, is back, and he’s now the enforcer for the Eagles motorcycle club. They terrorize the town, but they leave her parents alone, and other than coming in to the restaurant and eating, Pinky and Trucker have no reason to see each other. But whenever they do see each other, her mind goes to dirty places. I mean, the guy looks like bearded Chris Evans, so umm, can we blame the girl?

The reason I bought a motorcycle club book was because I was told this was a soft and fluffy book with a hero who looked like Chris Evans. This is exactly what I needed! But I didn’t realize it was a motorcycle club type book. The thing about Suleikha Snyder’s writing is that I didn’t care. I was all in for a crappy thug of a hero. And that’s not like me at all. But you know what?

Trucker isn’t a thug. He’s actually not even a bad guy. And this isn’t a motorcycle club book.

I won’t spoil what’s really going on, but this book truly is light, fluffy, sexy, and has a Bearded Chris Evans hero. But don’t just read it for sexy Captain America, read it for Pinky. She’s a pretty rad heroine, and I want more like her. Read this book, you won’t be disappointed.

Pinky came back to her family’s restaurant/bar to help out when her mom gets sick. The local motorcycle club comes there a lot for the food. They are pretty much jerks expect for one member, Trucker.

I have to say this was an unexpected surprise. I’ve been in a book hangover and nothing was holding my attention until I started this book. I loved the banter with Trucker and Pinky. Their back and forth and the sexy times were off the charts. Plus, some parts of the story pulled at my heart strings

It’s very rare for me to have such a strong reaction to a novella but I did this time around. This was my first time reading this author and I really enjoyed her writing style. The plot held my attention and it was a fun, cute book that left me with a smile on my face. I’m glad I checked this book out and will be reading more books from this author.

“The words were echoing through my brain, sizzling beneath my skin, pulsing in my veins. Making me feel alive. I’d known him for years, but only known him for weeks. How could it be so serious so fast? How could I be so desperate to hold onto something-someone- I’d never really had?”

This is Pinky and Trucker’s romance. Trucker is “in a biker gang” in Eastern Indiana and he and his gang frequent the Indian diner owned by Pinky’s parents.

In a matter of 70ish pages, the author made me laugh with the banter between Pinky and Trucker. Made me tear up..my god the motions we go through..broke my heart..and instilled hope that true love always finds a way.

So so good.

This novella was exactly what I needed in the stressful weeks starting the new year, when I'm massively behind on my work (thanks, ill-timed Christmas illness), still fighting a horrible cough and cold (at this stage, I'm not entirely sure I'm not suffering from a new cold that I caught on the heels of the first one). I have so many mediocre English essays left to grade, with the deadline of the 12th of January (when all the grades for term 1 have to be in) fast approaching. So, of course I'm procrastinating and writing a book review instead.

Pinky Grover was away at grad school when her mum got sick, so she dropped everything and returned home to help out in her family's Indian restaurant. Now her life is on hold and there is very little to excite her, back in the tiny town where she grew up, feeling her potential waste away. The only bright spot to her days is the frequent visits from Trucker Carrigan, resident bad boy biker. Of course, getting involved with someone who works as an enforcer for a biker gang is entirely out of the question, but he sure is nice to look at, and low-key flirt with.

Trucker Carrigan went away to the army and got recruited into the ATF. Now he's undercover in a motorcycle gang and counting the days until he finishes his mission to take down the right-wing racist nut-jobs he's had to spend oh so many months with and pretend to be friends with. His only bright spot is visiting the local Indian restaurant and flirting with the owners' daughter, the gorgeous Pinky. He knows full well he needs to stay away from her, as he'll be leaving town as soon as his mission is completed, and a nice girl like her shouldn't look twice at the sort of guy he's currently pretending to be. Nevertheless, he can't help himself, and after a chance meeting at the local Walmart, where they trade nerdy banter, it seems like it was always inevitable they'd end up in the back of his truck.

I don't normally like insta-love stories, and Pinky and Trucker go from low-level flirting and longing glances to an extremely steamy car encounter and motel hook-ups very suddenly. The fact that they grew up in the same town and went to the same school (although Trucker was a few years ahead of Pinky) makes up for it somewhat. These people aren't complete strangers to one another, they just don't really know what the other has been up to since they grew up and tried to escape out into the real world. So it didn't feel exactly like insta-love, but it wasn't exactly "I secretly loved you my whole life and now we're finally together" either.

While Trucker pretends to be a low-life criminal, right-wing domestic terrorist as his cover, he's clearly a caring, sensitive, funny and deeply nerdy cinnamon roll of a man in actuality. Pinky Grover may seem like the perfect and dutiful desi daughter, but she has never been shy about admitting her wants and needs to herself, and has clearly suffered a dry spell since she had to quit college and return home. She has no intention of flaunting her new lover in front of her friends or family, but neither is she going to apologise for or deny herself the pleasure of hooking up with Trucker as many chances as she gets before their time together runs out.

I got this at the beginning of last year after a very positive review from my fellow kissing book fan, Emmalita. With the current train wreck situation in the RWA, it seemed like it would be a good time to read some romance, and especially from somone who had been outspoken in supporting my beloved Courtney Milan. I'm not the least bit surprised that I enjoyed something Emmalita recommended, now I need to see what else I can find by Snyder, as this first taste was very good, indeed. Also, I desperately crave curry now.

Judging a book by its cover: I have what I assume is the original cover for this novella. It has since been re-issued with a cute animated cover, which seems to capture the characters really well, but I prefer this simple one. I love that we don't actually see more of the characters than their feet and a little bit of the legs. The image still says so much, and from the angle, you can tell that they are locked in an embrace, without actually having to see any more of their bodies.
