About the author

Makoto Kobayashi (小林 まこと, Kobayashi Makoto) is a Japanese manga artist.
Kobayashi's professional career in comics started in 1978, when he won the 'Shōnen magazine New manga artist' award for his work Grapple Three Brothers.
Over the years Kobayashi has published a number of sport manga, specifically about Judo, starting from his first serialised work Sanshiro of 1, 2 (1981-1984), winner of the 1981 'Kodansha Manga Award'. However, his best known comic book, especially in the West, is What's Michael? (1984-1989), a humour strip about an orange cat, for which Kobayashi won another 'Kodansha Manga Award' in 1986.

Divertente rilettura. Ne lessi alcune storie sull'allora Kappa Magazine. Poi ho comprato l'unico volume uscito e questa possiamo dirla come terza rilettura.

Michael è un gattino davvero divertente. Peccaro che in Italia abbiano pubblicato solo il primo volume. 🐈


EDIT: Comprerò la Miao Edition che esce a partire da Marzo 2021 fino ad Agosto 2021. Sei volumi. Quindi mi aspetta una quarta lettura di questo volume a quanto pare. Adoro Michael.

The writer did know a lot about cat's behaviour. We will find so many detail about cat and the Japanese traditional culture. Perhaps for people who didn't really in to cats this comic is just an ordinary comic book about cat which more less like the Garfield story. But for cat lovers who definitely know about cat's activities and behaviour, this book is totally hilarious.

So cute! Fun little comics about typical cat behavior that will appeal to many, but not a kid's manga. A friend gave me a set of these for free and they are great bathroom reading material. Better than Garfield! But there's no narrative or logical order to them.
Read the French version and it's so weird to read a manga from front to back :0

Rimettendo a posto lo scaffale dove tenevo i manga che mi ricordavo di aver comprato ho trovato anche questo e avendolo dimenticato incuriosita mi sono subito messa a leggerlo. Dopo aver scoperto che c’era una fumetteria a Senigallia avevo cominciato a comprare anche altri manga oltre a quelli che avevo in mente e devo aver provato anche questo incuriosita dal fatto che c’era un gatto ma poi si vede che o non ne ho trovati altri numeri o non ci ho pensato più ma fatto sta che è andata bene così perché non mi è piaciuto per niente. Però voglio puntualizzare che alcune parti le ho trovate molto divertenti e ben fatte ma altre erano insopportabili detestabili e decisamente orribili e non ho potuto far altro che assegnare una stella. Questo tipo di manga comunque può essere anche letto così senza averne altri numeri perché ogni numero si compone di storielle molto brevi che hanno come protagonista questo gatto Michael ma senza una storia di background ben definita, in alcune storie appartiene a qualcuno e in altre ad altri. Ogni storia è a sé senza il minimo collegamento con tutte le altre, tanto che se ne può leggere anche una a caso senza problemi.

Molte, partiamo con quelle che mi sono piaciute, erano divertenti e enfatizzavano con simpatia delle particolari spiritose caratteristiche dei gatti. Dunque è stato anche divertente come lettura e i disegni erano molto curati, il gatto Michael è stilizzato ma non troppo quindi perfetto carino e assolutamente credibile e… Allora che cos’è che non mi è piaciuto? Alcune storie sono state troppo cruente e fuori luogo! Si inizia male con la prima storia che termina con Michael che viene spinto giù dal balcone… Ci sono rimasta subito di merda! Mi sono detta: cominciamo bene… Stavo già per smettere eravamo quasi lì che rinunciavo a leggerlo però dopo aver visto che la storia successiva era scollegata gli ho dato un’altra possibilità… Come avrebbe potuto non essere scollegata se il protagonista rimane stecchito dopo due pagine!? Ho capito che è qualcosa di spiritoso ma non mi piace questo genere di umorismo dato che sono molto sensibile per quanto riguarda la salute degli animali nelle storie e non sopporto MAI in nessuna salsa vedere la morte di questi in nessuna storia. Sono andata avanti mi sono detta ho solo questo numero andiamo avanti e ho trovato una storia anche peggio: un malvivente entra in una casa spara alla proprietaria poi anche al gatto anche alla gatta con i gattini…stiamo veramente esagerando! Anche in quel momento stavo per smettere ma mi sono obbligata ad andare avanti con disgusto anche se dopo aver letto queste due truci orrende storie sapevo già che il punteggio non sarebbe mai potuto essere più di una stella perché questo umorismo fa schifo.

Poi andando avanti ce n’era anche un’altra che l’ho trovata patetica e improponibile: un uomo arriva con una cesta di gattini e quella che abita con lui incazzata la butta via… e viene posseduta poi dagli spiriti dei gattini morti….Ignobile! Ma come si fa a trovare divertente questa roba? Ecco queste sono state le peggio e sono state troppo eccessive e quindi sono contenta di non aver comprato altri numeri di questo manga perché per me è proprio fuori portata.

Si tratta di un manga in vecchio stile quando all’inizio qui in Italia ce li proponevano normali per così dire non con le pagine che si giravano da destra a sinistra e non alla giapponese… altri tempi. Anche l’impostazione del fumetto sembra piuttosto occidentale, un tipo di manga diverso dai più famosi… ma che comunque con me ha chiuso. Un vero peccato perché i disegni del gatto erano fantastici ma neanche questo può distogliermi dall’assegnare una stella che sarebbe stata anche zero se fosse stato possibile mettere zero. Addio… Anzi Michael vieni con me e abbandona questo manga horror!

This is a taller version of What's Michael?, Vol. 1: Michael's Album, but with an introduction by Cat Yronwode and four exclusive stories. (I haven't checked whether these four stories appear in another volume.)

Most of the stories are great. They're funny, slice-of-life tales with slapstick humour (for instance, the cats yowling and making hilariously pitiful faces when their owner absentmindedly forgets to feed them while distracted by the phone) OR the odd wacky story where Michael (an orange "almost but not really Garfield" cat) and several other cats act like people but they're cats (Michael is accused by the other cats of stealing a sardine, Michael deflects by pointing out the police cat didn't "cover up" when he used someone's garden as a toilet).

However, the VERY FIRST story in this edition has "an artist" working in a high rise see Michael walking across his balcony wall and strike him with a lighter as a joke(??), which causes Michael to plummet several stories to his presumed death...

...

THIS is what they decide to lead with??

I like the series in general. I just have... questions about this volume.

Gatos não são muito a minha cena, sou mais pessoa de cães. Comprei o livro para a minha esposa, minha antagonista nestas discussões (e a gata dela não tem uma boa relação com a minha cadela). Claro, não resisti a espreitá-lo, e fiquei rendido ao humor destravado deste livro. Nem sempre compreensível, há piadas e formas narrativas que julgo que apenas os japoneses iriam perceber, mas o retrato do gato, das suas tropelias e desventuras é ao mesmo tempo encantador, divertido, e quem tem de aturar esses bichos do demo no dia a dia, muito descritivo das suas atitudes e comportamentos.

Cats aren't really my thing, but this collection of stories is definitely humorous and true to cat-kind. Strangely the panels have been converted so that they read from left to right instead of from right to left. I suppose that Dark Horse thought that the book would not sell well if they did not convert it, yet believed it was good enough to go through the expense of moving the panels. The drawings are pretty standard. They are plain and simple, and I don't see too much in the way of specific Japanese styles. Only one or two characters give you the feel that a Japanese artist drew them.

Excellent depiction of cats in graphic novel form. I don't like people teasing cats, even in graphic novel form, so I was not a fan of a few of the stories (scaring Michael by wearing a Godzilla mask, for instance) but Kobayashi manages to capture the essence of cat wonderfully.

Adorable comic about a cat named Michael and his adventures. Not a continuous story - Michael has different owners and is in different situations from sequence to sequence, as you would expect form a comic that was published in a newspaper, and sometimes Michael himself does not appear at all, but there are always cats in all forms, fat and skinny, tame and wild, and their behaviour is much the same as cats all over the world.
