Christmas House Romances #3

The Holiday Hunting Lodge

Rate this book
Snow, a hunting lodge, and a flight—both to and from—love.

Music composer Jesse Parrish has a dream contract! He’s been signed to write the soundtrack for a film with award potential. This one job could make his whole career. Twelve themes, all due to the producer at Christmas—but he’s completely blocked. He doesn’t have a single theme, let alone twelve.

He needs to get out of Vancouver and somewhere he can think.

Aspiring private pilot Mattie Daines has been crushing on Jesse since before he started dating Mattie’s older sister. His music makes her heart sing—but what kind of creep-o falls in love with her sister’s boyfriend? That’s half the reason she’s been working as an outdoors guide anywhere but Vancouver for the past couple of years.

When Mattie hears that Jesse is desperate for a private plane to take him to a friend’s mountain lodge, she leaps at the chance, if only to prove that she can be around him without her knees going weak.

Mattie whisks Jesse off to the mountains in her plane, but when bad weather threatens the flight, will this dangerous plane ride also threaten Mattie’s firm resolve not to let feelings for Jesse back into her life?

I love a story that ends with a kiss, whether it's a book or a movie. That's the big payoff! So that's the kind of books I like to write, and I call my style "cotton candy for the soul"-- light, sweet, gone. We all need a little escape from reality for a while, and escapist fiction can be the perfect remedy.

I'm a moderately bad housekeeper, I have a black thumb, and it takes a small miracle to get my hair to curl. My handsome husband and I live in the Arizona desert where we're raising our five children, who never let us stop laughing.

Can I say that I'm a little sad? This is the last book in this Christmas series and I've really enjoyed them all. I'm sad that there are no more coming out. But I will say that as much as I enjoyed the first two books, I think this one is my favorite out of them all.

All three books can be read as stand alone novels. There are some connections between the stories, a couple characters crossover and the locations are close by each other, or mentioned in the other books.

I loved in the second book, The Sleigh Bells Chalet, getting an initial glimpse of Mattie. She is the heroine in this story. I loved the scene she had in book two. I laughed out loud and just kept thinking I wanted to see her again. Well at the end of book two, we were given a little glimpse into book three and knew she was getting her own story. Hooray! I can't tell you how excited I was knowing that. And her book didn't disappoint at all. I loved it! Wow! In fact I didn't put it down. I've been sick the last couple days and didn't venture far from my bed and resting and sleeping. I read Mattie and Jesse's story in one sitting.

If you were going to only pick up one Christmas book this month, can I recommend this one?

Maybe it was the vulnerability of the characters. Maybe it was the musical aspect. Maybe it was Mattie trying to find her dreams and feel accepted by her family. Maybe it was her love for Jesse. Maybe it was Jesse discovering the truth of many things. Maybe it was Jesse finding his voice again. Maybe it was the pure creativeness throughout the book. Maybe it was the sparks. Maybe it was the truth. Maybe it was the healing. Maybe it was all the friendships. Maybe it was the sweet and tender love. Or probably, more accurately, it was all of the above. Whatever the reason, I was completely drawn into this story and didn't want to leave these characters.

If you get the chance and read it, I hope you enjoy it. I hope it inspires you and brings you joy. Just like it did for me!

Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I'm passionate about music and loved the role it played in this story. I wish I could hear the music that Jesse composed, especially as he was inspired by nature and Mattie.

One thing that I love about this author's books are the metaphors and similes that she uses. They make me smile and when added to the sweet, slightly intense, romance, my heart sang. I wish I could hear the music that Jesse composed because he was intense, focused, and so talented.

Mattie and Jesse have a somewhat complicated past, but I loved the chemistry that oozes throughout the pages and songs. This is a great holiday romance with some great feels and kisses in the most romantic setting ever.

Content: mild romance

I keep wanting to call this the Happy Hunting Lodge in my head. Anyway, this was a fun Christmas read with unrequited love, adventure, a little bit of suspense, and a sizzling, but sweet romance.

Mattie Daines has been in love with Jesse Parish for years, but he'd been dating her older sister. When Mattie finally thinks she can get him out of her head, she returns to Vancouver, only to be given the opportunity to fly him to a remote lodge in her small plane. He gets to work on his music, she gets to finish up the last flight hours she needs. Win-win, right?

A plane crash will strand Mattie and Jesse at the lodge together. It was interesting to see Jesse's creative process and how Mattie helped him find inspiration. She was such a great support to him, and I couldn't believe that he didn't see it sooner. I grinned through this book as Jesse found himself more inspired whenever he was near, and touching, Mattie, and she's trying to keep her distance and protect her heart. It was a delicious tug-of-war. The chemistry between Mattie and Jesse sparked off the page.

Content: clean (some kissing, no violence, no language)

The Holiday Hunting Lodge by Jennifer Griffith (5 stars)

(Warning: This review has spoilers)

Such a great addition to the series! I loved how Jesse and Mattie inspired one another’s art. Jesse’s need to touch her in order to hear some of his themes was a great touch (no pun intended)!

Mattie’s love of nature, innate sense of direction and skills at creating art made her a very likable character. Her insecurities about not being as smart as her other siblings kept her real, otherwise she’d have been too perfect, which brings me to my one and only complaint.

The end scene where Mattie’s siblings are complaining about how, as the baby and because of her ability to do almost anything, her parents lavished their attention on her and sent her to amazing camps, etc. was a scene that opened up new hornets nests rather than resolved much, at least in my opinion.

It did help Mattie realize that she had been off-base in her self assessment for most of her life, so that was good. But it opened up the ‘our parents doted on you more’ and her sister’s ‘I’m so uninspiring that’s the man whose kisses I loved lost his ability to compose music’ hornets nests. Mattie doesn’t even seem to worry that her sister might be in pain from her relationship with Jesse and that the fact that he’s composing again could be salt in the wound for her sister.

Other than that admittedly small blip in context of the whole book, I loved it and am hoping for another in the series!

Super cute holiday read!!

A lovely winter's tale featuring the snowy Canadian countryside and two people thrown together for more than they bargained. Mattie thinks she is starting an airplane transport business and rashly agrees to fly her secret heart throb (and sister's former boyfriend) to a cabin in the wilderness. Only she doesn't even check the weather, and end up in a crash landing in a snowstorm. Because she is so finely tuned to nature and surroundings, she is able to lead them safely to the intended cabin. Her passenger, Jessie, is a composer with a seemingly impossible deadline to compose twelve pieces for a movie soundtrack in a week. The fantasy that follows is sweet, respectful, somewhat intense, and totally unbelievable. Perhaps it is because I am a musician, but it is 100% fantasy in my opinion. I have never heard of themes spontaneously discovered by a composer because of the proximity of another person. The scenes are full of longings and inability to voice needs and wants. In spite of this, the book has many interesting and well told parts. I liked all of the characters, and the family dynamics were excellent.
Not exactly a Christmas story, but it certainly was a wonderful winter tale.

This is the third book in the series. Each book was very different from the other story lines. This one added a little mysterious element that I didn't figure out until the reveal. Each of the main characters had artistic gifts and insights that were curious to read about. I've never experienced anything like they do, like hearing the music in his head from some experience with a person or nature or knowing nature so well to know where to go to find the music. So that was intriguing.

The story is much about relationships and how people experience things differently. And people have their own filters that cause them to see things in one way that is not necessarily an accurate view. That is how siblings might remember growing up in the same household in very different ways.

The story takes place at Christmastime but felt more wintery than Christmasy to me, probably because more of the story was spent noting the winter setting than was spent on Christmas itself as they are tucked away in a Canadian cabin with no contact with the outside world for most of the time.

No sex, language or violence

I have read the first 2 books in this series and enjoyed them a lot. However, I didn’t like the plot in this one or the story at all to be honest. I almost DNF this one, had to really push through. Hopefully the fourth one will be better.

Bad title...wonderful book!

In complete transparency, I really enjoyed the first 2 books of the trilogy, and read the reviews for this book, I am very happy that I chose to read because it was my favorite!

This is Mattie’s story, the ice rock climbing guide from book 2,
Mattie ran away from Vancouver for over a year. Her heart was broken because she had fallen for her sister’s boyfriend, Jesse, a composer. Mattie’s parents passed, and her older brothers and sister Naomi were all very smart- nicknamed the Summa brothers because of the honors they received in college. Mattie stayed away planning how she could open a business her family would consider a real career. Her uncle left her a Cessna plane, and she now only needed 6 more hours flight time to qualify for her license.

Mattie returns home to Vancouver with her plans on her new business. She has rented a apartment but it wouldn’t be available until after the Christmas holidays. So Mattie goes to her family home, where her brother Rex lives, to sleep on couch! While eating a sandwich she hears voices then her parents piano, and immediately recognizing the piece, and then the man playing her parents piano, Jesse. Jesse and Naomi had broken up months before and Mattie knew she should not care that it was Jesse. The music filled her more than she remembered.

Jesse, had dated Naomi for 18 months, and his music dried up, nothing inspired him. He had a contract, to compose 12 pieces for a movie which if he could find the inspiration could end up being nominating for an Academy Award. If only. He tinkled on the keys and complained to Rex, that he couldn’t fail, or, break his contract with the man who started his career. Jesse was blocked, nothing was helping. He explained it to Rex, and told him that he was offered a fully stocked cabin through the holiday. He just needed to get there. His pilot had cancelled because of weather warnings.

Mattie was listening of course, and burst into the room, Jesse, staring and thinking wow, was this Rex’s kid sister? Was she around 2 years back and heard his songs? Mattie thinking, why would he remember me, constantly comparing herself to her sister (looks) and brothers smarts. She remembered herself as being overweight and unattractive. Jesse just told himself was he so self absorbed that he didn’t notice this beautiful red haired women. Rex was teasing Mattie for her previous job choices, mountain climbing, risk taking guide to nature. He tried explaining it was because he worried for her safety. Jesse, desperate for a ride to the cabin retreat, he needed to try to meet his contractual agreement, suggested to Mattie that he could provide her the remaining 6 hours of observed flying because he was a licensed pilot. Rex immediately said no! Of course, that set Mattie off, and they argued back and forth. Mattie had something to prove also! So they did the usual sibling standoff, which ended with if she could make a nerf basketball shot, she would fly her Uncle’s gift plane 3 hours into the wilderness and deposit Jesse at the cabin. Of course it was an all net success. Next began THEIR story. Jesse and Mattie quickly got to the plane and their journey begins.

I will not give out anymore spoilers, Jennifer Griffith wife’s a beautiful story, full of suspense, discovery, music, self awareness, you can hear the music as Mattie introduces Rex to the outdoors. You can close your eyes and see the art of Mother Nature that speaks to Mattie. You will not be disappointed in the twists and turns that are weaved into this beautiful story. The ending is more than you hope for, both Mattie and Jesse discovering their truths, that their own minds had led them both to prove themselves, and in the end they come to know the truths behind those fears that held both of them back for so long.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Stay safe, stay in and read a good book! Sadly I have read both of Ms. Griffith’s holiday trilogies, I am off to find another good book!

Oh my. This is the third book in the series that I have read. The first two were light, but enjoyable for the most part. This book is only 140 pages long, but it took me 3 weeks to finish. Why? Because it just wasn't very good and I had no motivation to open it up. (The book is officially listed as several pages longer, but there is an epilogue following the final chapter which is just the beginning of the next book in the series and has nothing at all to do with The Holiday Hunting Lodge, which was only 140 pages in my edition).

Two single adults get into a small private plane to fly into a remote area in the middle of winter without checking weather reports or filing any real flight plans. One pilot is unlicensed, the other hasn't flown in years. This is the start of the book and the first time readers are expected to just go ahead and believe the story.

I won't go into too many details, but there are just too many parts where readers were expected to believe the unbelievable. Two adults who couldn't tell if footprints in the snow were human or animal?

Oh, any everyone in this book is either an extreme genius (nicknamed the "summas" because they all graduate summa cum laude), or have extreme creative talents. But, none of the characters were particularly likable.

I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because I have the holiday spirit. I think I own one more book in the series. The covers are gorgeous, but unless the next book has a plot with actual character development, I won't be reading any others beyond #4.

The Holiday Hunting Lodge is the third Christmas House Romance by Jennifer Griffith. It is a sweet story of second chances when you didn’t know that you missed the first chance. It is also a story of sibling rivalry or confusion. Growing up with brothers and sisters doesn’t necessarily means that every one’s perspective of events is the same. The main characters, Jesse and Mattie are likable and engaging. You can’t help but hope that they work through their misconceptions and learn to communicate, grabbing hold of the love right before them.
Ms. Griffith’s books have been called “cotton candy for the soul” but they are deeper than that. The story is entertaining but with a message. Perhaps the characters find solutions easier than we do in real life but hey, I don’t mind a little artistic liberty by the writer. The message of being true to yourself and loving what you do in life is still clear.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mattie Jane's family makes her feel inferior because she does not think like they do with their intellectual careers and her brother Ray's belittling comments do not help. Mattie has just return home after a year to help her get over her crush on her older sister Natalie's boyfriend and has career of being a private pilot that may hopefully be meanful enough for her Summas siblings to stop belittling. Only thing stopping her is logo, business name and 6 flying hours to get her pilots licence. Mattie has smarts in other ways like sense of direction while out in nature, sketching, positive outlook.
Jesse discovers Mattie is his Muse by touch and outings in nature around the hunting Lodge lead by Mattie that help him create 12 songs he needs for his friend Hobie's Movie.
Mattie has her perception change on Christmas Day by her siblings.

What a wonderful story! Well crafted and beautifully written as are all of the stories I have read by Jennifer Griffith. They are truly “cotton candy for the soul” and they have never failed to sweeten my soul yet. This one specifically started out with just a touch of sweetness then slowly grew little by little into a full blown ball of cotton candy that melts in your mouth. Music and art appreciation is the crowning glory to this tale that warms your heart and leaves you smiling at the end with a very satisfying HEA. I received an ARC of this book at no cost from this author and one I can very easily recommend.

The Holiday Hunting Lodge is the third book in the delightful Christmas House Romance series but can also be read as a stand-alone. We first met Mattie in The Sleigh Bells Inn and this is her story a year later. Jesse, a music composer is desperate to get away to compose before he loses his film score contract and Mattie is the only person who can help him. Their chemistry is undeniable but it means something different to each of them. Needless to say things do not go smoothly. The characters are great, the location stunning and the end delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have no hesitation in recommending it to all romance fans.

Mattie, who isn't a full-fledged pilot yet, offers to fly Jesse to a cabin in the Canadian mountains but she doesn't check the weather conditions?? Isn't that Pilot 101? What an idiot. She can't handle the bad weather & ends up crashing the plane. She doesn't appear to be too upset that her plane charter business is gone before it got started. Jesse is no better. His previous pilot refused to take him to the cabin because of bad weather. So he lets an inexperienced pilot take him? And doesn't warn her about the bad weather? He's an idiot too. The two idiots deserved each other. The book never got any better.

I just loved this Christmas romance story. Mattie has been in love with Jesse. Only problem is her sister Naomi swooped in. Two years later they are no longer an item. Mattie gets roped into flying Jesse to a remote cabin for him to write music which he was never able to do while dating Naomi. Turns out Mattie is his muse and getting stuck together could be really bad or good if Mattie can get over him choosing her sister before. Lots of fun stuff in there. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.

Artistic Block

Jesse needs to write a musical score for a movie. He has writer's block for months. When he finds out Mattie has a plane and only needs 6 more hours of flying with a licensed pilot. He convinces her that he has license and she can fly him to a cabin in Canada. She and Jesse are almost to cabin when they crash. How will this adventure turn out? Will Jesse write his score?
Will Mattie get her dreams to come through?
Jennifer has written a wonderful story with strong and believable characters.
Can't wait to read the next book in series.

Do You Hear the Love?

I couldn't get the book opened on my tablet so I clicked the next one on my list . Wow! What a happy mistake I made. This "replacement" book quickly drew me into the story. I didn't realize this is the last in the series. The writing is so smooth and the descriptions and thoughts flow seamlessly chapter to chapter. Gifted families with issues, siblings living under misconceptions of their place in the mix. No hints as to the story. You must read it for yourself. Thanks Jennifer.

this whole book seemed to be a whole misunderstanding between the siblings honestly and the parents. Mattie thought that she was the challenged one and was colorless when really they were jealous of her and trying to find ways to challenge her Also why mention the other sibling when he never was there. What was his importance? Overall I really liked the story and how both Jesse and Mattie helped eachother with their gifts and following their dreams. How they came together was really wholesome and natural. Not forced. It was really cute.

Beautiful and heartmelting

Oh this was just about the sweetest Christmas book ever! The chemistry is enough to keep you warm and cozy on the coldest of winter days (while still staying perfectly clean). I could NOT put this down and stayed up a bit later than I should have reading it. Normally I'm not a fan AT ALL of the sisters ex trope, but the way this one was done was classy, romantic, and a zero on the ick factor. It was beautiful and dreamy like the first full snow of the season. I highly recommend this book and now I'm off to read the next one.

Jesse has been hired to write the soundtrack for a movie. He's had 6 months, but no inspiration. Now, with a week left to deliver, he decides to head to a remote cabin to focus. The pilot who had agreed to take him changes his mind because of an incoming storm.
Jesse's ex girlfriend's younger sister, Mattie, has just returned to town. She has 6 hours left of flying time to complete her pilot's license. She agrees to fly Jesse to the cabin, mostly to prove to her brother that she is capable. Caught up in proving her brother wrong, Mattie neglects to check the weather. As the storm rolls in, the plane crashes and the 2 are left stranded, thankfully in walking distance to the cabin.
While in the cabin, Jesse is attracted to and inspired by Mattie to write the score for the movie. Mattie has been suppressing her feelings for Jesse for years, as he was dating her sister.

A wonderful Christmas story...100 Christmas Stars

Absolutely loved this book. Her family was interesting, it was amazing how they each saw themselves. Jesse's musical talent and the part Mattie played into it was wild. The impending storm,, the high winds and a plane crash, doesn't that always happen. Oh, I forgot Mattie artistic talents. Overall it was such a good book. Thanks. Written by Cindy :)

Wilderness adventures

This book was pretty good. A fast read with a cute story. She was his muse and some misunderstood history changed everything in the end. She is a spunky and strong heroine and he is a musician. He is lost and weak and clearly lets himself be misguided. I would have liked him to be a little stronger but that might not have worked well with a strong willed female.

The Holiday Hunting Lodge

This was a great book and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading before bed. The love of a young woman helped her best friend write the music he needed for the soundtrack for the movie he was assigned to do. This music won him a very prestigious award and it was all due to Marie and her love for Jesse the composer. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill

So much to love in this novel. A plane crash in the Canadian mountains, a cabin in the woods. A stalker in the woods? Jessie is a music composer and has a contract for a movie soundtrack but he has no inspiration until he is stuck in a gorgeous cabin with Mattie, who was his pilot. They both now each other since Jessie dated Mattie’s sister Naomi before. If you listen to nature, sometimes it can give you what your looking for.

Jesse a score writer for movies has to come up with 12…he’s blocked. Mattie a want to be pilot takes him to a secluded cabin to let him write. The plane goes down they walk to the cabin. Mattie becomes his muse, when he touches her he gets a tune. She is into nature and art and sketching. She takes him for walks and then he writes. He looks at her sketches without her knowing and she’s mad. He’s in totally into her.

Great finish to the 3 book series! Recommend this lovely Christmas romance! You can read this as a stand-alone or delve into the whole series (like I did) Either way you will enjoy and put you in the Christmas mood!! The last one does have a bit of Christmas in it but not as much as the other 2 books, but still a quick enjoyable read!
