What an enjoyable third installment in this amazing series! And that ending 😱... How am I supposed to wait until May 2022 for the final book?

This is one of my favorite YA series of the last few years, no matter how much pain it's put me through. It started as a delightful retelling and has only grown into a standout story of its own with complex characters in an interesting world facing stakes that never stop intensifying. The POV switches are masterfully done, with each character working through internal and external battles of their own and making me fall more in love with them.

I enjoyed seeing the characters deal with the ramifications of their actions in book #2 while moving forward and working together to conquer demons new and old. Although the romances in this series are amazing, the friendships are a close second, if not more compelling at times, so if you're a fan of found family you will definitely enjoy it. The magic system is fun and continues to grow more complex, upping the stakes with each reveal that ultimately made for a cliffhanger ending. It's everything YA Fantasy should be!

The only reason I rated four stars is due to the diary flashbacks in 1st person from the POV of a new character. I'm not a fan of jumping back in time away from the main plot, especially when in this case the rest of the book was written in 3rd person. Yes, it was a diary so 1st person made sense, but I found it jarring, especially when flashbacks already draw me out of the story. However, this is very much my personal preference and I understand the author's intentions, so overall it didn't alter my love for this book significantly.

As I mentioned, I'm so excited for book #4 and know that this will be a series I reread time and time again!

Thank you so much to author Kaitlyn Davis for providing an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This series is the only YA I'm still reading. It's just so good, and it keeps getting better and better. The cliffhanger at the end of this book was insane, I’m tearing my own hair out just wanting to know what the eff is happening next.

I loved the pace and action packed scenes, and the little soft moments in the middle. I wish the romance was more predominant like in the first book, but I loved the plot and the other kind of relationships, so I can't really complain. This is a very well thought out story and it shows in all the details.

-

"Lyana and Rafe soar away, her wings as white as snow, his rippling with fire, the pair of them cutting across the skies like prophecy brought to life."

"She said his name as though everything good in the world were contained within the sound. He melted, the fire in his blood replaced with something just as warm, just as potent, yet infinitely more powerful. Love."

Lyana and Rafe just about destroyed me in this book. Their undeniable connection to each other shone brighter than ever. The way Rafe pretty much left everything behind to be with her and protect her just made me swoon and melt into a puddle of goo.

Rafe simping for Lyana is my new religion. This man is a great example of why female readers adore simping fictional men. He was everything Lyana needed; he was kind, protective, supportive. He was strong but vulnerable. Fierce but tender. God, I love this man.

"He was a king. She was a traitor. He was honest. She was a spy. He was undeniably good. She was irrevocably damned."

Cassie was simply pure perfection. She and Xander stole this book away from Lyana and Rafe. They are such a powerhouse together, but also on their own. Their personal development throughout the series was so satisfying. And they finally kissed!!! I thought I was going to die of pure excitement when that moment finally happened.

When Xander told her “In my dreams, I touch you with two hands” I swear I thought I’d pass out. Why was that so hot?? And yet so tender. My god, I love Xander so much. He's probably one of the best male characters I've ever read in YA.

"Your dreams have always been my favorites."

I never liked Malek, not even as the “bad guy”, because the narrative kept trying to make me feel sympathy for him and present him as a complex, morally grey character. When in reality, he acted like a controlling, toxic sociopath. His whole woe is me vibes in this third installment only managed to piss me off. Especially his “moment” with Cassie at the end, when she forgave him. He had done nothing to deserve that. Ugh I'm going to be salty af about this for the rest of my life.

I loved when Cassie told him he had "thrown a tantrum like a scared little boy whose favorite toy got stolen away." You go girl.

"His brother, the King Born in Fire. His brother, the hero of prophecy. His brother, the savior of worlds.

Oh god, these two. I cried. I refuse to believe they won't have a moment in the last book where they can finally hug it out. I know I'll cry like a baby and I can't wait.

"Honestly, fighting dragons was less draining than this constant gnawing fear that came with caring about people. Brighty was over it."

Brighty is still one of the best things in the series and one of the reasons why this series is so complext, rich and interesting. Every secondary character adds something to the plot. Every relationship is interesting and well done no matter how secondary.

And Brighty is one of the best parts in the whole series for that reason. Her friendship with Rafe made me feel things and that last scene together... god talk about being a glass case of emotions with those two.

Spoilers below.

Who’s the Spatio'kine with corn stalks blonde hair, freckles and honey eyes?? Are we supposed to understand the reference? I’m worried it’s going to be a new character we don’t care about and the last book will focus on her.

Lyana and Rafe better come back from the rift and get their HEA at the end of the last book or I’ll RIOT.

Perhaps I want us all to have the happy endings we crave.

What was that ending?! That cannot be it! Please tell me there'll be another book!
This series has gone a long way to reach the point this book leaves us with. And it was a really amazing journey which I'll be sure to revisit.
The world that Davis brought to life here is simply beautiful and the characters and their developments are amazing. I'm so glad that I decided to buy the first installment on a whim.
I don't want to give away too much about the plot here because I don't want this to be spoilery. I just wish I had bingeread this. I was totally confused by all the names I was supposed to know and the types of magic because I didn't excactly remember those.

There is nothing better than a series that builds on itself from the characters to the action playing out in each scene. Kaitlyn Davis has built a fantasy world in peril, a prophecy that may never have time to come to fruition and the fear that the races cannot come together to fight the true enemy.

THE DRAGON AND THE QUEEN brings it all home at a rapid-fire pace while further building on a web of detail and conflict that runs hot throughout!

Sacrifices will be made, trusts will be threatened and alliances will be forged, but will it be enough? This cast of characters has only become more defined, even as it grows. There is so much riveting power on each page, this became a one sitting book for me because I was never ready to say, this is a good stopping point. I wanted more, I needed to know everything and Kaitlyn Davis shared it all with perfect timing!

Be prepared to see “old friends” or “enemies” in a new light. Feel their desperation, their determination and be part of the tension that is building to what could be victory or a defeat that is devastating!

Fabulous reading throughout this entire series!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Kaitlyn Davis! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Enjoying this series ... its well crafted. The magic system is clear. There are romance's in here that I am enjoying. Everything falls into place, no open ends so far .. but what takes the cake are those morally grey characters. They are well done ! 👏

Ohhhh I’m pumped for the last book now! Another great read for this series. I am wrapped up in all of these characters and the story.

I love these characters. So much. There’s incredibly growth each time for Lyana, Rafe, Xander and Cassi. Everyone is on their own journey and I love how they criss-cross and support one another. Nobody is always right. Yes, mistakes are made. But wow, do I appreciate the real feel of every one of them.

The only thing I could really ask for is more romance!! It was such a big point initially and now has fallen to the side a bit. Just a dash of a few more quiet moments between my ships would be *chefs kiss*. I want all the happy endings. AND I BETTER SEE THAT IN THE LAST BOOK. Quietly panicking that the last book is going to take one of them.

Diary/Journal aspects are sometimes a miss. Here? Not at all. The addition of journal entries from someone in the past (who I have some theories on now) was just what this needed! It added perfectly to the story and gave a much more well rounded background to how the islands are floating and how they even got there in the first place. I realized I was really caught up in these side characters by the end. That’s how this beautiful writing took me in.

It’s a very action packed novel with plenty of political intrigue. Many angles are being addressed and the desire to save the world is clear. I can’t wait to see how this finale wraps up because I have so many answers I need.

Overall audience notes:
- YA Fantasy
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses to closed door scenes
- Violence: physical altercations, magic, small battle scenes, earthquakes

Broooo. Whyyyyyy???? This could've been a trilogy if she had tweaked the ending a bit. I do not like the direction it took at the end but overall it was super fun. I loved the diary entries scattered through out the book.

*SPOILERS*

Characters:

🪶Lyana🪶
Soooo, I don't know why I find her so boring. If she's not boring me she's annoying me. She really isn't bad but I just can't get on board the Lyana train. She's super powerful (but what I like in this specific book is that she isn't completely overpowered) and she made smart-ish decisions throughout the book, but there is something about her that just isn't it for me.

💰Rafe💰
My baby<3 I cannot get enough of him. He is the biggest softie ever, and he is so gone for Lyana. Also Rafe needs to be freaking appreciated, like how do people not seem him as a leader. He literally risked his life and fought for the man who turned him into the hybrid just because it was the right thing to do. Also in previous books his fighting skills kinda seemed meh, but he was a fighting machine in this book. This man is literal gold.

❤️‍🔥Xander❤️‍🔥
He was doing the MOST in this book. Xander is literally a black haired Peeta, just ten times better. Like I can talk and talk about him, but I think you get the image. He was a slay and his feelings for Cassi??? I'm so done. I need someone to love me the way he loves Cassi.

🔮Cassi🔮
She was kind of all over the place but as always she was such a slay. I'm really intrigued as to what she is gonna do in the next book. I love how much she loves her mom, her relationships with Rafe and Lyana, and how she only lets herself be truly vulnerable with Xander. I think she is probably the most complicated character with the most complicated relationships in the entire series.

💡Brighty💡
If she gets a happily ever after I will die happy. That's all I need. She's like Rafe in the way that she is big softie but wants everyone to think she's a grizzly bear. I love her.

👎Malek👎
I do not like him. I am glad he died. Even though he did the right thing when he was on the brink of death why did it have to be death for him to realise that he was not the King born of flame? Like bro, it was obviously Rafe since YOU were the one to give him dragon wings.

I wish it hadn't ended like that. I wish this would've been the conclusion because now I feel like it will make the next book confusing to follow and something tells me there is going to be a lot of loose strings, buuuuuut we'll see.

Before I begin my review, I want you to know that The Raven and the Dove is my favorite YA fantasy series of all time. I have loved the story and characters so much and I can't wait for the 4th and final book. The Dragon and the Queen easily became my favorite book of the series so far - I read it all within a span of 24 hours!

My favorite part of this book was definitely the character development. We get to see Xander (my #1 character) really step up to become a leader that everyone believes in. I also really enjoyed seeing Rafe embrace his newfound powers and protect the people he loves. Rafe has dealt with so much in his life so seeing him ease into his powers just warmed my heart. Finally, Malek. I had very mixed feelings about this character in the prior books but I grew to really like him. I would have loved to read more about his thoughts during some of the actions he took. Overall, I am just so happy that all of the main characters improved themselves in positive ways.

I absolutely loved getting to learn more about the world's lore. There are sections in the book where we get glimpses of the world long ago which really clarifies how everything built up to the current point in time. It answers a ton of questions I had throughout the previous books. We also get to learn much more about the other kingdoms in the world above. The previous books focused on the House of Peace, the House of Whispers, and the House of Wisdom but we get more insight into the other kingdoms' scenery, people, and rulers. We also get to learn more about different kinds of magic and meet more mages. This was very intriguing and really raised the stakes for the main characters.

I am so glad to mention that the romance and relationships set up in the prior books are further established. I really enjoyed reading the romance scenes in this book and it was much more intense than in the previous books - which I am SO thankful for! Haha.

Kaitlyn's writing is so beautiful when describing the different kingdoms, the different types of magic, and the descriptions of different creatures. The world-building and lore are explained in deeper detail and with Kaitlyn's writing style, it's very easy to keep up with and follow.

I highly recommend this series and this book in particular to you all. I believe you will thoroughly enjoy yourself and fall deeply in love with all of the characters just as I have :)

Lastly - I recommend you purchase the hardcover copies! Each of the hardcovers in this series has the cover art on the naked hardback without any words which makes it stunning to display on your bookshelf.

I’m going to give this a 3.5 because of what I didn’t like- Semi Spoilers ahead!

The entire novel was Rafe and Lyana trying to get to each other, but something always came up and the reuniting got pushed back. We finally got ONE moment towards the end but even that felt lacking. The buildup built up to nothing special in my opinion.

Cassi was a spirit for more than half of the book, and yet her POV was written so often, for what though? I really wanted to get back to the main characters, though I acknowledge not particularly caring for her anyway.

On the topic of POV’s, I feel that there were too many. It’s challenging to steadily develop each character when there are so many in focus. Their storyline must also somehow fit with all the others. Slower paced development feels out of place in an action packed heroine adventure.

The dragons aren’t the enemy… so who is? They are fighting to coexist in peace with them yes, but there’s no big bad or tremendous evil for readers to either love or hate. The books are entertaining, but I was expecting more by this point in the series.

Books, Coffee & Passion

The 5 star reviews are always the hardest to write. When a book grips you, almost stops your heart repeatedly and makes you cry and pray for the characters you love so much, it’s hard to put it all into words and do it justice. But here I am, trying to do just that with The Dragon and The Queen.

I’ve been reviewing this series since The Raven and The Dove, book one, released and even though I loved it from the first page, it’s fantastic to see how much this series has grown. The Dragon and The Queen, the third book, is now my favorite book in the series! The character growth in it is perfection! Seeing how much Lyanna, Rafe, Xander and Cassi have evolved into such powerful characters is fascinating. Even Malek!

The action scenes were riveting and I was glued to every page. Honestly, I couldn’t read it fast enough because I just wanted to KNOW everything but I also didn’t want to reach the last page because then the book would end. The characters deeply emotional connections, their selfless actions, the true love they had for each other really glowed through it all. The pining was breathtaking! The friendships and how these characters bonded, even through their mistakes, were amazing moments too. I couldn’t put my Kindle down.

The fact that this is the third book in the series makes it harder to write a review without spoiling it. But I don’t want to spoil it, if you like fantasy stories you NEED to read this series. It’s so worth it! This world is pretty magical, these characters are flawed and amazing, the plot is impressive and there are a lot of surprising twists and turns with great action scenes. The story flows beautifully and the ending… explosive!

The Dragon and the Queen was a mind blowing roller coaster. I’m crazy in love with this series! The world building, the character development, the magic system, the story telling were amazing and all of these characters stole my heart. Can’t wait for the next book, that I already need desperately!

4 stars

I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series giving them 4 stars each so was excited to read this installment.

This book was different to the others and had a lot more about the prophecy plus some diary entries written before the current time by a seer. I really enjoyed those diary entries and felt they added a lot to the book.
The storyline was overall okay and probably the thing that let down this book the most for me. I felt the characters and the action were incredibly strong but the overall story was quite obvious and even a little monotonous at times. However I still really enjoyed it and cannot wait for the final book!

I have received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since I've devoured the first two books in this series, I was very excited to get my hands on The Dragon and the Queen. It just sucks that it took me so freaking long to finally find the time to actually read it. Luckily, things were so easy to follow and jump into but I think that's probably due to the fact of my love for everything within these books.

The characters were still very likable. As was the overall story. I also like how consequences were dealt and handled with throughout the books as well. A lot happened towards the end of the sequel, so I'll admit I was very intrigued to see what the outcome of everything would be like in this one. I'll also state that I wasn't disappointed one freaking bit.

Then there's the romance, friendships, and the found family-ness of it all. Each of them brought so much happiness to my head and my heart. It was honestly really hard to put the book down once everything started to pick up. I also liked getting to meet some of the new characters too.

In the end, it shouldn't be a surprised to anyone that I'm very excited for the next book. The whole waiting game will definitely suck though but at least it will be here. Eventually.

I am in awe.
This story, the magic system, the houses, the prophecy, the action, the characters. It’s all absolutely brilliant.

What book 2 lacked for me (out-of-character decision, and overall second-book-syndrome?), The Dragon and the Queen made up a hundred times. A thousand times.

Lyana, Rafe, XANDER and Cassi had the best character development I’ve read in a really long time. Ugh what a satisfying, heart breaking and genuinely beautifully written book. Again I’m in awe.

I am also a clown who has to wait until spring 2022 for book four but the challenge is accepted.

Lyana let him retreat, because she knew, same as he, that though the stakes had changed and the players were different, the game remained the same. They were two souls on a crash course, ready to combust, but their collision might set the world aflame.

Forget everything I ever said about this series because the whole game has changed. The Dragon and the Queen is my favorite book so far. The story just lands on the ground and never stops running. Or flying. Or whatever metaphor works best here. I'm still in shock at that ending.

description

After all the character development in book two, The Hunter and the Mage, we get see that development play out here. All the characters really come into their own. We finally learn some of this Universe's history and why things became they way they are. All the dots finally (mostly) connect. I've never thought I'd relate to anyone in this story but Brighty is my newest favorite character.

They were a part of this, just as much as she was. Everything was connected. The isles. The rift. Their souls. It was a vast puzzle she was on the verge of solving.

description

Each book in The Raven and The Dove series is better than the last. I highly recommend the series for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and The New Mutants.

It was a leap of faith, a belief in the prophecy and in herself, a trust that despite all her faults, she knew what she was doing. Love had always guided her—a love for adventure, a love for the world, a love for its people—and that love had led her here. The unknown was calling, and she had no choice but to answer.

This book really surprised me! I was convinced that Lyanna and Rafe's story was going to be a trilogy, but the story definitely does not end here! Which absolutely excites me - I really love this world and the characters.

Without giving too much away, here's what I loved.
1. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! All across the board, the characters are really becoming complex and I am here for it! Cassi's arc is one of my favourites and I adore her no-nonsense attitude. She has really been set on the path to redemption. Xander has also grown immensely and I am so happy with the King he is becoming. Malek's little change of heart towards the end really touched me (but it was about time he saw reason, sheesh).
2. WORLD BUILDING. There's a diary from the past? The people lived in a different place? What's beyond the mountains?! I can't wait to find out more! The world building in this series has been quite slow, but I kind of like the mystery. Hopefully all will be revealed in the next book.
3. THE DIARY! Oh my gosh, I could not wait to get the diary chapters! Mira's story is so interesting and I loved the look into the past - we finally know how the rift was formed! And don't get me started on Zavier (swoon) - I definitely want to see more of him! Maybe that's not 100% plausible, as their story did seem to come to a close by telling us about the rift and the prophecy. BUT who is the blonde girl from the last chapter?! I'm sure Xander and Cassi will take it upon themselves to find her in the next installment.
4. SPACIO'KINE MAGIC. What, how did we not know about this? I guess it must be rare. But it makes sense that it will take a spacio'kine to close the rift. Just hoping Rafe and Lyanna can hold on long enough until the blonde girl can be found.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I need the next one ASAP! Hopefully we won't have too long to wait. Many thanks to the author for sending me an e-ARC to read and review.

This was another solid sequel to the Raven and the Dove series. Kaitlyn Davis has expanded on the avian world and mages in a really satisfying way. I liked reading from all of the perspectives, even the diary entries from the world years ago.

It was great to see Lyana and Rafe both on their journeys to fulfil the prophecy, and Xander stepping into his role as a leader. And I enjoyed both of the couples’ dynamics. I felt bad for Cassi though, who, despite her awful actions in the past, truly thought she was saving the world.

It’s amazing how the author manages to make you hate a character in one book, and then sympathise with them in the next. This happened with Malek, who I despised in the last book, but liked and understood more in this one. I liked the discussion of forgiveness and the blurring of the line between good and bad.

With an explosive ending like that, I cannot wait to read the final book in this series. It will be very interesting to see how it all wraps up, and what will become of these characters.

Thank you to the author for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I just want Rafe and Xander reunited! Is that too much to ask?? 😩 Now, I have to wait until May? I want Rafe to rescue his brother himself instead of everyone having to rescue Rafe or Lyandra. That would be great.

This did have me on the edge of my seat quite a bit. I saw another side of Malek and actually understood him a little more and felt for him as he passed. All of these characters can’t seem to catch a break! I really need the brotherly bonding to happen asap. That’s all I care about 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I’m giving this 5 stars regardless.

This series just keeps getting better! This book was nonstop from start to finish and the writing was even better than the first two.

It’s rare for a book with so many POVs to keep me excited for every chapter. There’s usually at least one or two perspectives I could not care less about. But with The Dragon and the Queen, I was eager to read every single chapter.

“Forgiveness was a fickle thing, swinging like a pendulum, so close one moment and so very far the next.”

The development of every single relationship in this book was AMAZING. Each character goes through so many different trials and they only come out better and stronger.

Lyana, Rafe, Cassi, and Xander are all precious in their own way and I just want to protect them… So that ending hurt. It really, really hurt. And waiting almost a whole year for the finale is going to be brutal!

Even when discussing this series, I say that I must commend Kaitlyn Davis for writing a story about a black woman as the lead and not feeding into stereotype after stereotype for her.

A lot of times, when written by non-black people, the black characters get heavily placed into the category of side characters. Here, we get to witness that Lyana is the key. What brings the world together is that not enough stories have black women as the lead without there needing to be racial trauma involved. Because racial trauma can be too much to take in so often when reading stories, it was so lovely to read an account with a black lead when it is just magic, dragons, and fighting a force trying to destroy that magic.

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this series and always find that I can’t put it down. I still adore the concept of an avian society and would love to read spin-offs about all of the houses. I often have a soft spot for “side characters” and this is no different; I have really loved watching the relationship between Cassie and Xander unfold - they both have weaknesses and bring out each other’s strengths and I hope to see more of it in the next book. Yes! To my surprise there is another book. I thought this was a trilogy so I was gobsmacked when it ended on a cliffhanger. Good surprise! I cannot wait for the next book.

Thank you to @kaitlyndavisbooks for this #gifted review copy.

I love the world building in this series. It gets better and better with each book. The Dragon and The Queen ramped up the suspense, with betrayal, love, redemption, and adventure perfectly intertwined into the story. Every character has a different voice so multiple POVs are easy to follow. Can't wait for the next installment. Highly recommended for fans of Ya fantasy, adventure, magic.

Ah the third book was a bit of a miss for me but still overall wonderful.

I found the Diary scenes boring unfortunately although I assume they were necessary and I found the dragon fighting scenes a bit on the repetitive side with the same things always happening, like earthquake-falling-egg crack-dragon-powers-repeat x 4.

My biggest peeve is I wanted even more for Cassi, one of my absolute favorite characters EVER. I hate that she kinda goes from being Malek's bitch to now Lyana's and Rafe's, it bothers me sooo much, I'm hoping there is even more liberation for her especially from her heart eyes for Lyana. I will say every chapter from Cassi's point of view is top notch, she's just so very interesting, I can't get enough.

Rafe is still Rafe and very likable and heroic no complaints there, Lyana is really starting to fizzle for me, she is a bit too heart of gold, beloved and "special" for my tastes. Honestly I've been finding her a bit eyerolly which sucks because I loved her in the first book. I'm getting tired of hearing every character talk about how amazing she is, like she's cool but not that cool chill.

Malek was the biggest flop in this series for me which makes me sad because I was hooked on him in the first book, I just don't think he was developed and the route with him wasn't what I was hoping for, I feel like he had such great potential as a true villain and he came out more as a whiny bitch boy. I also wished we got to see more of his relationship with Cassi, I believe that there was more there to explore and complications to understand between them and I'm upset we missed out on that. I will say that his SPOILER SPOILER final moments with Cassi had me crushed. His character deserved a better development IMO.

I absolutely adored watching Xander become the leader we all know he is, his storyline is playing out beautifully and SPOILER the chapter where he is trapped in the tunnel with the owls is one of the best in the book.

Also the fire that bursts from the pages when Xander and Cassi are together beats any dragon. LIKE OH MY GOD THE TENSION. It's so good. THEY ARE PERFECT TOGETHER.

RANDOM SHIT:

'closing his eyes, as though somehow it made him less vulnerable, he murmured, "in my dreams, I touch you with two hands"' I read this sentence too many times for it to be normal OMG it was so hot and sweet and beautiful. XANDER I LOVE YOU

"Your dreams have always been my favorites" okay so I did cry like a complete baby at this

It really pissed me off that Brighty slapped Cassi.

I still love how they talk about Lyana's hair/braids and beautiful dark skin. More of this forever and ever.

I also really love how Rafe trusts Lyana, he gets that she's in charge and supports her.

Anyway I don't have a hot clue who this blonde freckled chick is supposed to be!

Can't wait for book four.

The Dragon and the Queen is the third book in the Raven and the Dove series, and it picks up right where The Hunter and the Mage left off. Things kick into action quickly and the story keeps you hooked from the very beginning. With multiple POVs, we get to follow our beloved characters as they navigate a dangerous and ever-expanding world.

Lyana continues to shine as a strong female protagonist. I loved watching her growth in this book as she embraced both her strengths and her limits. She is truly coming into her powers, and it was amazing to see her character develop. Rafe, my personal favorite, is still the heart of this series for me. He is such a tortured soul, and I kept wishing he would finally catch a break. His journey of accepting himself and pushing past self-doubt was one of the highlights of the book.

Cassi’s redemption arc is another strong point. She has made plenty of mistakes, but her survival and strength through impossible circumstances make her compelling. Xander, too, really stood out this time. He has become such an underrated gem, and this sequel finally gave him the space to shine. His charm and growth were so rewarding to read.

The relationships in this book are layered and full of emotion. The romance between Rafe and Lyana, as well as Xander and Cassi, was packed with angst and yearning, and every scene between them felt significant. The alliance between Lyana and Xander added another level of complexity, and the brotherhood between Rafe and Xander remains one of my favorite parts of the series. I’m hoping to see even more of them together in the finale.

One of the most pleasant surprises in this installment was the unexpected friendship between Rafe and Brighty. It brought humor and warmth, and it added even more depth to the found family dynamic, which I absolutely adored.

The worldbuilding continues to expand in fascinating ways. The more we learn about this universe, the higher the stakes rise, and I found myself completely invested in every moment. Kaitlyn Davis has built such a rich, complex, and unique world that deserves so much more recognition.

I cannot wait for the final book. This series is incredibly underrated, and I truly hope more readers discover it.
