The Raven and the Dove #4

The Godborn and the King

Rate this book
Return to the world of The Raven and the Dove, where winged people rule the skies, a lost kingdom lives at sea, and two star-crossed lovers hold the fate of each in their palms. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo!

A love written in the stars...

Thrown into a world of claws and flame, Lyana and Rafe must work together to survive. Dragons abound. Danger lurks. And the hybrids are out for blood. But perhaps more terrifying are the questions in their hearts. Are they ready to lead? Were they ever truly in love? Or with the prophecy realized, will everything they thought they had fall apart?

A clash five hundred years in the making...

With the isles now returned to the sea, two worlds have become one. The avians will do anything to protect their homes. The mages will do anything to take them. And without a king or queen of prophecy to guide them, peace is no longer an option. Xander must decide where his loyalties lie—with the ravens he's sworn to serve or the woman he can't help but love.

Find the chosen one or face the end of everything...

Deep in the skryr's dreams, Cassi bears witness to the prophetess's final vision. A rift mage lives and Cassi is the only one with the power to find her. She'll sacrifice anything to save the world, including her future with Xander, but even the queen of secrets never anticipated the mysteries waiting for her in the mist.

There is so much about this series that I love, and it has been one of my favorite YA series of the past few years . I will definitely buy a physical copy of this book to go with the others on my shelf, as well as continue recommending the series to lovers of YA Fantasy. I was hoping to rate this highly-anticipated finale more than three stars, but certain choices the author made did not click for me. However, there's a good chance these elements could totally work for others, and overall I did enjoy diving back into this incredible world and amazing cast of characters.

What I liked:

The Characters
I have loved these characters from the beginning, and only grew to love them more with each book. Rafe and Xander have always been my favorites, but I definitely felt for Cassi and rooted for Lyana every step of the way. Brighty never failed to make me laugh, and our supporting characters really propped up the main cast with the magic, intrigue, and challenges they brought to the story. While the romance subplots were fantastic, I felt equally invested in the friendships among characters and enjoyed seeing how those dynamics developed.

The World
Avians, dragons, pirates, royalty, and a well-constructed magic system; the world of this series is absolutely phenomenal. Even with its many imaginative pieces, I never felt confused or overwhelmed, but merely invested and immersed in the story. The contrast between the sky cities and the world beneath the mist never ceased to intrigue me, and seeing how these two societies collided, with their different cultures and beliefs going head-to-head, really added to the plot and the challenges the characters had to face as they worked to save the world.

The Romances
Let's just say that a particular scene between Xander and Cassi in this book made me smile so much I had to put my Kindle down for a moment and press my hand to my heart. Seeing them finally be together and accept themselves, flaws and all, was wonderful after everything they've been through. The same could be said of Rafe and Lyana, and also the steam between them (literally and figuratively) was a great addition after so much buildup over the previous books.

What didn't work for me:

The Romances
Yes, I'm putting this here as well. Because while I was happy to finally see a queer Romance in this series, its execution was lacking.

The Villains
Earlier in the series, I absolutely adored Malek as a villain. One moment I hated his guts, the next I understood his motives and felt sorry for him. So, naturally, I was not particularly happy when

Baby Ex Machina
I am still baffled by the direction the climax of this book went. Did I miss something where we learned about

All in all, this series is still very near-and-dear to my heart, and I will definitely continue supporting Kaitlyn Davis and her future YA Fantasy series.

Thank you so much to author Kaitlyn Davis for providing an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

May 23rd Update

I'm the WORST at remembering to update these Goodreads reviews, but even I can't miss this one - THE GODBORN AND THE KING IS ON SALE TODAY!!! Wooohooo!!

description

I hope this fourth and final book in The Raven and the Dove is everything you want it to be!

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has stuck with this series or who might be about to try it for the first time. Ending a series is always bittersweet, but these characters and their story will always hold a very special place in my heart. There were times after my daughter was born when I questioned whether I would be able to keep writing, times when it took me a full week to craft a single sentence, times when I cried into my phone worrying the words would never come to my sleep deprived mind, but this story pulled me through. It's easy to lose yourself in the title of "mom" and I'll be forever grateful to these characters for helping me hold on to a vital part of who I am.

Okay, enough mushy stuff! Here's an early review quote:

"I bow to Davis's excellence in storytelling. This book was so amazing, presenting such an explosive finale, that near the end I had my hand on my chest like I could hold my heart. That is how good it was and how much I loved it." - Rebecca Veight, Goodreads

I'm so thrilled with all the love this conclusion is getting! If you haven't grabbed your copy yet, here are some links:

Amazon (free in KU) | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

Enjoy!! And I can't resist one more photo of the whole series together - with a little teaser from book 4 :) THANK YOU!

I really enjoyed the whole series.
But here is what I am feeling as I just finished this last book :
I was looking forward to see how they will make the avians accept Rafe in his new form.
How the diplomatic relations get healed with the lead of the new King and Queen. How the people below and the people above accept one another.
Do the Avians get to know the truth of thier world and the prophecy? ( the whole time I dint agree with the story that they came up with ... it dint have any part where it might help Rafe, in being easily accepted.)
Will the dragon world heal ? What was that heart that was filled with magic? How did it come there ? What was that ? How will the dragons sustain in future without magic to nourish them? (I thought lyana will heal that world and provide unending nurishment for those poor dragons)
And what about the babies ? Part dragons ? What magic do they have ? How did Rafe and Cassi maneuver thier relationship ?
I felt like the whole battle with Cassis father dint have to happen, and was mostly a set up to introduce her sister if there will be a series on that in future.
Yeh kind of feeling disappointed.

But ... I did enjoy reading the book .. just left with a lot of unanswered questions.

Hope has the power to make a fallen kingdom rise.

What a conclusion! I spent most of this on the edge of my seat. I loved being back in this world and the conclusion lets me hope for a spin-off.
I loved Lyana and Rafe from the moment I met them, as well Xander. Cassi took a while as well as the Captain and her crew but everyone really grew on me. The writing let me flow through these pages and I'm really sad it's over but I ended this book with a really big smile on my face. To say more about the plot would be spoiling this but I will say this much: it has come such a long way from the first installment. Each book in this series had a different feel tot it but everything fit together. I will be back for a reread!

Ok I’m sorry this will mainly not be a good review.

There will also be major spoilers.

This has to be one of the worst endings to a book series that I’ve ever read. Not only do we get thrown the weak curveball trope of “secret sister” to a character we have hated since the end of book 1 after they did the unforgivable to Rafe in book 1. Yes we are talking about Cassi who somehow is a main character and the main person this entire book was about. Not that she hasn’t been one this entire time but the main plot was about her mysterious family and rafe/Lyana were the subplot.

When we finally get them back to the world, we get drama of course but we all get surprise! She’s pregnant!! (let’s just forget that fact that they only just had sex for the first time like one week ago?? So this fetus is still just cells….)But, this is a magical world therefore, a magical baby. So lyana gets stabbed and rafe goes ballistic but his brother is like “she’s alive it’s ok” so then rafe (after a few blunders) figures out she is pregnant and the baby can absorb magic and therefore can heal her and her powers. So Lyana now has a personal portable charger. Yup.

BUT! That epilogue made up for things cause that was really cute.

This was such an unexpectedly fun and intriguing series. I'm so glad that I stumbled upon The Raven and the Dove on Netgalley a few years ago.
The Raven and the Dove is an epic YA fantasy Tristan & Isolde retelling, set in a magical avian society, steeped in mystery and tragedy, star-crossed lovers, fate and prophecy.
And the series ends with a bang: in the finale, Rafe and Lyana are stuck in another world, fighting for their lives and trying to save the world they might not be able to get back to, Xander is desperately trying to make the avians understand how much danger they're in, and Cassi and Brighty are working to find the fated rift mage.
I thoroughly loved every page of this, especially the Xander and Cassi chapters.
Definitely one of my favourite YA series.

When I started this series I had no idea who Kaitlyn Davis was. I had never read any of her books. I just saw an insanely pretty cover on Netgalley, saw that it was a retelling of Tristan and Isolde and saw that it was an epic fantasy adventure. It was the start of something beautiful. Not just this series, which is an amazing romantic fantasy series deserving way more love than I see it getting. But also from discovering Davis' fantasy backlist. Just two more series to go!

This is the last book in the series and it's everything a last book is supposed to be. Everything we've learned, every character we met, every seemingly meaningless scene, it's all coming back, it's all connecting, it's all leading towards that one future and one solution. It's not easy to get there. Our characters have to fight, for their lives, for the lives of their people, for the world as a whole and for a bright future for everyone. They do it with passion and fire.

Even though this is quite a big book I flew through it with ease. Davis has a lovely writing style, with sentences you feel in your heart and soul and vivid images you can picture in your head. Her action is breathtaking and sometimes even very raw. Her love and romance is true and real and unconditional, despite flaws and faults and mistakes. Her characters are real, layered and very clearly changed from the people we met once upon a time.

I'm okay with letting these characters and their world go. They got their ending, the ending this series deserved, the ending fitting the story that was told and the characters starring in it. But I will miss them deeply. And I will mostly miss Xander, the boy who has always felt less, had always known that missing a hand will keep him from doing thing he wants, but mostly the boy who learned that there are many things he can do left, that he is loved and cherished and the best king possible.

If you didn't start this series yet. If you love your romance mixed with fantasy or your fantasy mixed with romance. If you don't mind big books and loads of characters and worlds with prophecies and secrets and gods and monsters: Please pick up this series and love it as much as I did. Do.

ps. If you order this book before it releases Monday May 23rd, make sure to check out https://www.kaitlyndavisbooks.com/p/p... to claim your pre-order present!

This was a brilliant end to a fantastic series. It is so close to a 5 stars but I can't quite give it as I have been left with quite q few unanswered questions which I think needed to be tied up more than what we got from the final chapter.
Still, I am left happy and really loved these characters and this world.
I am guessing from the ending that there will be a spin off series with Brighty as the lead character which I am excited for as I love her character.

I really recommend this series to ya fantasy fans. Its such a great, imaginative read and deserves much more hype than it has had. Loved it!

Way too much lovey dovey for me. I didn’t enjoy this one at all. Rafe and Lyana are annoying with their constant need for each other and they are always hurt and in need of rescue 🤮If that isn’t enough, Xander and Cassi are having a love fest every time they see each other as well. All I wanted in this book was to finally see a sweet reunion between Rafe and Xander but noooooo…. didn’t get that either. Needless to say, this wasn’t for me.

This was such a good conclusion to the series! There were so many moving parts but they all came together at the end and I feel so satisfied as a reader. I love how the author kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time with all the twists without leaving you too confused or lost. Thank you so much to the author for sending me ARCs of the series. As always, I really appreciate the care that went into Lyanna as a Black female main character.

This felt like different series from the other 3 books. We had too many POVs with too many personal journeys that ended with a lack luster ending which rested on the shoulders of an unborn baby and a just introduced character. I had a hard time believing what I was reading and that these were the same characters as the first 3 books.

“Magic might have been the first thing to bond them, magic and prophecy and fate, but this right here, this feeling, this connection, this beautiful adventure, this was forever. ”

And this is where we end. I’ve had a great time with this group of people. I’m gonna miss them.

The pacing of this book was everything. Everyone was always on the move, gearing up and doing everything to race against time.

I loved Rafe and Lyanna’s chapters together. I worked hard to get to this moment where they could just be. It’s crazy how they’re just like they were in the first book, before everything went to hell and moments were all they had. Her goading him and him being frustrated and annoyed but secretly loving it. Or not so secretly at this point. I missed that so much.

Brighty is my favorite character. No doubt about it. She’s my queen. She would be my best friend if I was in this story, and what a friend she is. Her love for Rafe was so touching. Their relationship is my favorite thing to come out of this series. He needed a friend. No expectations. No care for his power, his status, his name. Just a companion. Loyal to the end. They were great for each other.
——-oh, and I FREAKING CALLED IT!
I knew her and the savior would get together and it was so lovely. It was a highlight in the story. I’m so happy for them! I do think that things were a bit rushed though. I would’ve preferred more Brighty chapters to see more development here.

I also loved Captain Rokaro. She had my heart.

Um, there were definitely other characters in this story. I went back and forth with myself trying to remember if I forgave them or not. Brighty made me realize it would take the entire book for me to make peace with it. We are Rafe stans and that’s just that. I was able to move on though. Somewhat. Kinda. Depends on what was said.

Cassi did what she needed to do. I respect her for owning her faults and pushing to be better through her actions. She was carrying a lot of this plot so I really liked those scenes.

Xander. He definitely aided the relations between avians and mages through his kingly duties. On the flip side, I don’t know. I’m usually a huge fan of brothers and love their relationship. It’s the reason why I was so upset over his and Rafe’s. It’s actually baffling how Brighty met Rafe not too long ago and yet, I never saw the amount of emotion that she delivered in missing her friend in Xander missing his brother in this book. That was really odd to me. I also really hated that statement that Lyanna made about the fact that Xander wouldn’t choose Rafe over Cassi. That would be nothing new in their relationship. Rafe was always the one sacrificing and now he had to quickly release his resentment towards his assaulter for his brother. That’s not okay. I felt validated by Brighty constantly calling him out, as she should. Let me digress though. I just hate when people give their all to someone and it’s not reciprocated, especially when it’s family. Rafe found his solace elsewhere and I’ll always be happy about that. There’s no hate here, just slightly above average judgement. I am a Brighty in real life after all (:

Anyway, my queen owns me. I’ll miss my raven-turned-dragon and dove. That ending was so cute. Goodbye to my favs💙

Lyana and Rafe have gone through the rift and the world they left behind is threatening to erupt. Mages and Avians are practically at each other's throats. A war is brewing. The prophecy continues with a chosen one that presents an unexpected magic. Finding them might be the last chance to save the world. Will she be their salvation?

With a prologue that turns up the heat on the intrigue, we then jump right into the story as we find ourselves in a beyond suspenseful scene. The author knows how to grab the readers' attention. The POVs interweave with surgical precision to move along the plot, bringing together the many threads in an exciting manner. POVs that divulge the character's innermost thoughts with care, and conviction that we will understand them. I love, love, love these characters.

The way the author sets and executes a scene is enviable. The figurative speech screams of imagination, unexpected words gifting us with vivid images, striking the emotion needed. Details you did not know were essential, but yes, they make the description so much better. Events that are unpredictable, but make sense for the story. Doesn't mean your jaw won't hurt from dropping on the floor.

An ode to bravery, duty, loyalty, and strength from within as well as from the relationships in our life. A cautionary tale against people who only look out for themselves. Against the fear of change.

I bow to Davis's excellence in storytelling. This book was so amazing, presenting such an explosive finale, that near the end I had my hand on my chest like I could hold my heart. That is how good it was and how much I loved it.

“A girl who’d yearned for adventure. A boy who’d longer for o home. Two young lovers who, in each other, had perhaps found everything for which they’d always been searching.”

3.5⭐️

What a great conclusion to this avian fantasy series. The journey the characters have taken over the four books is amazing, they’ve come so far. I was in a reading slump (once again sadly) for the first half of the book, but the second half was intense and I was very invested.

Lyana and Rafe’s story was on the back burner for a while as old and new characters too the centre stage. I liked learning more about them and seeing how they progressed, too. All the couples were really sweet to read about, and provided moments of relief within the dire situation. The buildup to the conflict and then the actual grand finale had me on edge, I loved it.

There is potential for more stories in this world, and potentially with the same characters, given how the book ended. I would be very interested if that was the case. Overall, I recommend this series - it was a lovely ride.

Thank you to the author for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Finally done with the series finale .. as much as I did like this book but I'd have to say it was not the best in the series .. its the only book that felt a little bit of dragging as I read my way into it .. I got bored along the way at some point but soon my interest was peeked again and it was verybwell wrapped up .

However I wish there were things better explained .. like how did the avians come to accept Rafe's new form ? If they did at all .. what happened to the dragons ? Would they perish now that there is no more magic ?
Another thing that I think should have been omitted and it would not have in the least affectef the storyline was Cassie's part with her father and sister .. a sister that was never found afterwards .. so what was really the point of introducing her ??

Overall it was a very good-easy-to-read series and would totally recommend it for all YA romatasy readers .. its a must read ..

An exciting, action-packed and wonderfully executed conclusion to the Raven and Dove series. There are one or two shocking and jaw-dropping moments as well as some really heart-felt scenes that will bring a tear to your eye. I enjoyed the prologue, it immediately draws you into the story and introduces you to a new character. It’s fast-paced and becomes more intense as the story progresses and the action scenes are riveting.

Xander, Rafe, Lyana and Cassi are wonderful characters, with outstanding character development throughout the series. If you’ve read the other three books you can’t help but become emotionally attached to each one of them. Every relationship is interesting and whether it is a deep friendship or romance their emotional connection shines through. Brighty is still one of my favourite characters, a tough little cookie with a heart of gold and she has an amazing friendship and bond with Rafe. It was so lovely to see her find true love in this book.

The writing is beautiful and the author pays great attention to detail when describing the world, magic system, the people and creatures. This avian-inspired world is full of amazing characters, dragons and pirates and is completely immersive and I did not want to leave. The ending is explosive, heart-pounding and a perfect ending to the series. A highly recommended series for all YA fantasy fans and I feel honoured to have been sent all four book as eARCs, thank you Kaitlyn.

This was a mostly satisfying conclusion and I most definitely enjoyed my time with this series. However, I was a tad disappointed that we really seemed to skim over a lot of things in the end and didn't get answers to a lot of questions. It seemed like that was a lot to work out between the different peoples and politics, but we don't see this played out. I'm guessing we'll see a spinoff series that may address some of this. Overall still a really solid series I'd recommend to readers who enjoy this type of YA fantasy❤️

A very satisfying conclusion!

This series has a very impressive magic system, an incredible world building and a very well thought out myths and lore. All of which I truly appreciated. Its often that authors neglect the fantasy elements in a fantasy romance, that's definitely not a case here. There's plenty of great romance in this series which is well balanced out with so many great fantasy elements.

However, this book is quite jam packed as we follow several characters pov while they try to achieve their goals while also trying their best to prevent the end of the world. So, somewhere along the way, many plot, character and relationship development felt rushed and didn't get enough page time to develop/execute properly. The new villian was also kinda meh. Plus, the ending felt a little abrupt and I would have really liked to see an immediate aftermath of the final battle as opposed to the 4 years later epilogue.

Overall, I had a great time reading this series and will highly recommend to all those who like reading a well balanced fantasy romance.

Ok

The last book in the series. It was good, nicely written, keeping you turning pages to see the point of view of different characters. But the overall story felt kind of dragged out...

I give this three stars because (slight spoilers):

1: I really got tired of Cassi's woe is me mindset, as Brighty put it.

2: Rafe and Lyana spend about 3/4 of the book in another world surviving and sleeping with each other. Boring...

3: Brighty is gay. I really, really enjoyed her character, especially how she got along with some of the other characters, and the way she'd argue with Rafe (they were hilarious!), but that development, just no....

I feel like Xander was the real unsung hero, as he held everything together, making the difficult decisions...and being just an amazing brother. There are so few sibling relationships like Xander and Rafe.

It's nice though that a writer can bring a series to a close without dragging things out forever. Nicely done.

I love this series very much, honestly. It has been something of a great deal of enjoyment for me. I will recommend this book to anyone who asks for a book recommendation.

That said, this book fell a little short compared to the previous books in the series. I only say this because I had many questions upon finishing that just felt like we weren't going to get touched on. I wanted to understand and learn more about the dragon world, but it seemed we would not get complete answers to that question.

But those unanswered questions aside, this still was a beautiful story, and I love Lyana and Rafe with all my heart.

Overall this was a pretty good conclusion for this series, but it was probably my least favorite book.

The ending felt rushed and there were a few things that just kind of came out of nowhere. And I wasn’t really a fan of any of those random things.

Xander has been one of my favorite characters from the beginning and I was so happy to see him shine in this book.

“It’s a story about love and fate,” Xander continued. “It’s a story about a king and a queen. It’s a story about a raven and a dove.”

The Raven and the Dove has become one of my all-time favorite series. Each book is better than the last. Lyana, Rafe, Xander, Cassi, and Brighty have all grown on me over the course of four books. (I would definitely be the Brighty of the story.) In the fourth and final book, everyone is at a point of struggling to keep hope (and themselves) alive. Lyana and Rafe are lost to this world. Cassi and Xander are struggling to find a middle ground while fighting on opposite sides of a war. I adored that Brighty became a prominent key character. I love the addition of Solvei. I wish we had gotten more time and more povs from Solvei. She, by far, is the most interesting character. And that's saying something with this beautiful amazing cast. I wish we had gotten more time with Solvei and Brighty together to understand their dynamic better. We are told more about them than shown. And I feel like that lessens their emotional impact, a bit.

A laugh spilled from Brighty’s lips, one Solvei desperately wished she could hear. The sound crafted by her imagination would never do it justice, she knew, but still, goosebumps rippled along her skin. Her heart lifted, made lighter by the sight of so much joy on her love’s face, so much hope and so much promise. The future danced in Brighty’s eyes, and as the photo’kine brushed the back of her hand over Solvei’s cheek, for a moment she could see it—the two of them at the bow of a ship, united not only by passion but by purpose, using their freedom to help those the world deemed as less, because they weren’t. Brighty and Solvei were living proof. A once-blind street urchin and a deaf village outcast were about to save the world.

All in all, I still can't keep all the magic names straight, but I think everyone's story ended up exactly where it should be.

*Thank you to Kaitlyn Davis for such a beautiful adventure. And for allowing me a small part on the journey as an arc reviewer.*
