Awake by Anna Battle is a sexy and romantic story with a lot of promise.

It is the story of Lori, a middle-aged mother of two, who must find out who she is and what she truly wants as she travels through the pains of divorce and the passion of a new flame.

There is no shortage of passion and intimacy in this book. The sex is explicit and sexy as hell.

I really liked Brandon’s character. He is well-rounded and has learned to take care of his daughter while working. He has also learned to be ok with what he has.

The characters, in my opinion, lacked depth and definition. Who is Lori really? I don’t feel like I got to know her at all. I wasn’t able to build a connection with her. She goes through the motions and feelings of an upcoming divorce but I felt none of her pain, sadness and/or stress.

Her ex-husband, Peter, is vilified and yet we never see it or experience it. He really is a cardboard cut-out. The divorce is happening in the background and we don’t get to experience that either.

At points the kids came off a being bratty while the ex-husband is neglectful and self-absorbed. Lori, herself, ends up being seen as a martyr in contrast.

For me, this would have been an exceptional book if we had the chance to experience and see Lori’s growth from pampered, stay at home mom to the trials of life as a single mom. The fears and tears.

We are given little snippets in time but never truly enough to sink our teeth into. I guess what I’m trying to say very ineloquently is that, for me, the story lacked emotion and depth of character.

I received an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
