Tamer is now book # 4 and we have to wait till 5-6-7 etc. Michael-Scott Earle is a genius at putting out books for the XY Chromosome. The female persuasion has Chic Lit which I have been chastised for enjoying by wife, friends, coworkers for enjoying. In the entire literary world, the Ladies dominate in all areas. I just like to have some great imaginative writing as the world saw from 1800 to today. Wonderful characters in unique situations, the entire universe built to enclose everything. Now I’m not necessarily talking about what will be classic literature. I want, no I demand the creation of Yarns about Good Guys overcoming Galactic Warlords. Tales of adventure and humor that become a series. Some criticism arises by IDIOTS that enjoy pointing out specks in an author’s work, but cannot see the FUN all around them. Michael-Scott is a master of creating escapist literature for guys wanting a serious bit of Action, Attitude, Adrenaline and Testosterone narration. He creates a whole world with that magical touch called WHIMSY. Go ahead and mock me, see if I care. But let me go to literary history. Homer compiled a magical journey that we still see in our modern literature and entertainment industry. Jules Verne was enjoyed by millions as was Charlie Dickens who serialized their work in newspapers. But now called Classics. My main man, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote stuff that entertained millions..then and now.
All 4 Tamer books are five stars. Each one getting better as he expands his story with more plot twists and unique characters.
4 books in and I am no less excited for the next book in the series as I was for this one. These aren't books for everyone (there's far too much sexual content for that), but they're a great deal of fun to read and I only wish there were more out already so I wouldn't have to wait.
The polarising content aside, there are some issues that keep me from giving this book full marks in this review. I feel that the pacing in this book (and the last) has dropped quite significantly. This book maybe covers two days of time and I feel like it could have covered a lot more. All we needed was a few throwaway lines about time passing, people getting on with their work and jobs that were scheduled to take days getting accomplished, and time could be moving much quicker. Instead, it is starting to feel a little too much like a blow by blow recap of the characters' experiences rather than selectively picking out the important moments to tell a strong story.
Also, the book suffers fairly heavily with repetition. An example of this is Victor meeting up with the new tribe at the beginning of the book, finding out about the women there, then repeating that exact same information in full detail again to his own tribe later.
Overall though, these are small issues that I'm happy to overlook. The truth of the matter is that this isn't trying to be much more than a fun series and fun is exactly what they are. It's easy reading that rarely fails to bring a smile to my face, and I can't wait for book 4.
I've been a fan of Michael Scott Earle for a bit over a year now and have read most of his series and this is definitely becoming one of my favorites. It's a little bit short (with quick releases between books) but the world is very interesting and a lot of fun. I wish that the Dragon Slayer series was dropped in favor of Tamer because where the Dragon Slayer world is generic with a harem this series is unique interesting and fun. I'd definitely recommend it as the characters aren't derivative and definitely add to the story. I could do with a little less description of inventions and more dialogue/faster story progression, but either way I enjoyed it.
This was a fun read, can’t wait for the next book. Devoured this book like water so not sure if this was the shortest book so far or if it was just that good. Everyone that has read this series knows by now that it is a typical harem, but the main part is not the harem but the adventure this book brings. I’m not sure why many hate on this series when they know what they are getting into. Thanks for the read and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Well the story continues to advance and we have had our first hunts about a villain. But very little time passes in this novel and very little is accomplished by the survivors in Victors tribe. This book was more action oriented with bigger dino battles and a sky-diving duel to the death for a climax. Over all a descent addition to the series - as the author continues to offer his version of Ark Survival Evolved.
Tamer 4 manages to take a great series and make it even better. I loved the characters before, but now I can't wait to find out what's in store for them in the future. I especially liked that there are going to be new enemies to face. The author knows how to keep people on the edge of their seat, and didn't disappoint this time either.
This is one of the richest fantasy world's I have come across in a long time. Mr. Earle does a fantastic job of making the reader truly care about every character in the story. This ends on a tiny bit of a cliff hanger, although I know some authors who would have made it much worse... All in all 9.5 out of 10.
World: The world building is solid, it’s probably the best part of the book and the reason I keep coming back. I love the dinosaurs and the fights in the book are not scientifically correct but they are fun and this world tickles my love for Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Story: A continuation of the story, with more dinosaurs and more women. What I like I like more, what I cringe at is still here. At the end of the days this is a male wish fulfilment junk food book so I will enjoy it as such. I did like the expanding of the world and the removal of isolation that this book showed us.
Characters: The characters are alright. They are slowly getting depth but the depth is still pretty superficial.
Time and again these small action serials provide entertainment and satisfaction (heh) in multiple ways. The action is always excellent, the setting sublime. The humor mixed with daily resource management minutiae. The mystery, the drama, and yes, the characters. The writing and editing is always top-notch too. The author has a real gift for spinning action yarns from almost any premise.
This book continues the fine tradition and is simply an awesome and fun read. Lots of new things going on, along a with a climactic ending that keeps you glued to the story. (As if any of the “Tamer” readers weren’t already glued to the story.) Highly recommended.
Victor has come to an understanding with the tribe that they met near the ocean. They go home with much needed salt and obsidian and start working on their various projects again. But paradise is still not tamed and nothing is meant to go easily on this planet, especially not for Victor! I'm addition to all of his other worries he has soooo many women after him! 😂 Poor Victor, but you can be sure that nothing can keep him down! Great fun!
It is not certain why this series is so compelling but it truly is! Victor was just an average guy until he came to the dinosaur planet, but the women who live with him are anything but. It was truly a bummer that Trel did not get her brood so it is hoped that she does, (hint, hint- Mr. Scott-Earle) as it would not be fair if the others do and she does not. Some minor editing errors but cannot wait to see what our intrepid no-longer-average Joe does next.
This is a wonderful addition to the Tamer series. I love how the story and the world keep expanding. That said, I would love to see more time spent on Sheena she was the original and I feel she might be left out in the shuffle. Great entry can't wait for the next one.
A good entry in the series. I like how things seem to be gradually ramping up with the appearance of a possible primary antagonist on the horizon. I like how the MC's powers are expanding. Overall a good book, but the author should maybe cut back on having other characters go on and on about how much of a good guy the MC is, it was laying it a bit thick in this entry.
Tamer and Star Justice are like a favorite TV show for me. Each episode are packed with familiar and new characters doing exciting things in interesting environments. The hard part is waiting for the next episode to come out. Tamer 4 didn't disappoint, ended well and left me looking forward to what comes next.
This is an action-packed interesting story of a simple guy abducted and sent to a dinosaur planet where all the other guys are jerks and dipsticks and the women all love him because he is kind thoughtful and takes care of them in a very dangerous environment. can’t wait for book four
Dinosaurs, women, survival. Pop culture references and puns. Funny, exciting and entertaining. Another great book from Michael Scott Earle. Now too look forward to book 5.
I’ve been reading through this series and I just keep wanting more; I mean what isn’t there to like, dinosaurs, forts, and a diverse cast of sexy heroines who aren’t just cookie cutter but have depth of character.
Tamer four is exquisite! If you haven't picked up a work by MSE yet you should! Start with Tamer, neck go to his collections and pick one blindly wherever you start you won't be disappointed!
I always enjoy the tamer stories. I like the idea of a tribal world which sort of combines the survival stories I read when I was younger - alongside the realities of adult hood.
This is a fun combination that happens to include dinosaurs.
Another one for the 5 star edition from MSE. Now here we go again waiting for the next installment. This book will keep you turning pages and then it ends leaving you wanting more. Great job MSE
Loved this book! MSE continued 4 where he left off of 3 and kept it rolling right along. This book has action, survival, dinosaurs and bad ass alien chicks. It was great!
I am impressed by the story and I'm excited too read the next installment. This happens to be my review ever in 2 years of Kindle use so take the lack of writing with a grain of salt
Such a fun read! A great combination of the details associated with survival and action. The relationships are a little too perfect, but absolutely entertaining. The next book cannot come quick enough.
A fine entry in the series. A quick enjoyable read. If you are a fan of the series you will find this a fulfilling next entry. Once again you must have read the other books to fully understand the story but fans of the series will enjoy it a lot.
I enjoyed this work. It was very entertaining and quite funny. The characters are a little bizarre in how they act, but it ends up being good for the story. I really love the dinosaurs! Read this!
I was a little skeptical at the beginning of this series, but I'm a full fledged convert now! Very entertaining and each book has been better than the last. Highly recommended.
If you're enjoying Tamer I strongly recommend Michael-Scott's contemporary fiction series, RockGod.
To the Author, please publish installments 5-10 as soon as possible. I can’t wait. Also, tanks for putting the book number in the series displayed prominently.
To new readers, start with book, I can guarantee you will not be disappointed once you begin.
I quickly read through the 4th book of this series to see if it’ll be worth my time to continue after such a horrific last book and I can honestly say I’ll continue reading, for now.
So as I usually do I’ll talk about what I really liked in the book, what I didn’t like, and then explain why I gave it the rating I did.
The 4th book of the Tamer series starts out pretty slow, but fun at the same time. We are introduced to a bunch of new characters, most I can’t keep track of except for Emta, Quwaru, and Zoru. All the new characters have interesting abilities. Though most lack any skill to fight save it be Emta, Zoru, or the recently deceased Will-lack.
There were some very decent Dino fight scenes, especially with the T-rex’s and Balaur’s. However my favorite fight scene was finally with another survivor with bat-wings towards the end of the book that Victor had to fight alone with, while quickly using his powers to tame two new dinos to help him defeat this mighty foe. This was probably the highlight of the book as we finally get to feel that true terror that I believed was missing so much from the third book. This new enemy was truly deadly and Victor didn’t come out of that fight unscathed which I enjoyed.
With the introduction to this bat wing man (we don’t know his name) we learn that there is a mighty tribe to the north who’s leader has even this bat man scared of. This tribe is different then that pathetic Burner tribe from the last book and actually poses a threat to our survivors. Finally we have an actual antagonist established in this book series that the survivors have to be weary of.
Other then that we had some nice character development from Victor, as his parents were brought up again when he was burying Will-lack and now him being extremely cautious around the new member Emerald, who appears to actually be cunning and quite cruel. Not sure if she’ll turn into an actual villain later down the road, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Either way that brought some nice new things to this series.
Now I’ll be quick of what I didn’t like.
Having Will-lack die was a lost of potential in my opinion. Most of the characters I am noticing from the first few books have been regulated to more of supportive and background characters. It appears that Victor is the only main character of the book and all other characters are just there for him to grow. Which is fine, though I do miss that Sheela is probably never going to get that much attention anymore like the first two books, along with Trel. Even though all the woman do have moments here and there and do help Victor, I feel as if they are more of now stress relievers for our main character. I am hopeful though that Emerald and Quwaru will be different though.
The last nit picks I have of course is the pacing of this book and how the author goes into too much detail. This has been a common thing since the beginning of the book, but not uncommon from other series. Our threat from the sky doesn’t of course come till the end of the book, however with how late he came was made up for how threatening he was which is why this book will be rate at a four star for me.
I will be reading the next book and now as Victor is separated I hope to see much character development and a difference in his character as he is alone, just as he was in the first book but now with a pteranodon and a giant crocodile at his back.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So I just burned through Tamer books 1-4 and have decided to give them all one review so I'll just copy and paste this for all the books. On the upside, no spoilers since I'll I'll only be talking in generalities.
First, this is a "harem" book, which I know some people are sensitive about. I'm only sensitive about disrespectful portrayals of women and the women involved in this story are aliens so the author is perfectly able to justify the harem based on the women's alien backgrounds. Author also goes out of his way to emphasize the women's other competencies, like intelligence. Still woman after woman seeks admission into the harem and, over the course of four books, it gets a little bizarre and tedious. Personally it would have made more sense to me to have several of the women just not be interested in that type of relationship but so far none seem likely to abstain.
Second, the first couple of books, if memory serves (I did blow right through them) were more along the lines of travel journals. The significance of this this is that travel journals are all about the journey so a big climax isn't required. Books 3 & 4, while still taking the travel journal approach, end on cliff hangers. Books are not tv shows and a cliffhanger in a book either means the author lacks writing ability, wants to milk his readers for extra money or both. The travel journal approach lessens my outrage at such crappy authorship, enough so that I decided to stick with a 4 star rating, but I could definite see how someone would give these books lower ratings.
One of the things the author does well is spread mild humor through out his books. The MC can magically "tame" animals so when he tames a group of five, three male and two female, he names them Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne and allows the MC to latter quip about how someone didn't get away with something due to those darn kids, much to the confusion of his alien harem.
One thing that has both good and bad points is that this is a non-standard litRPG. The people aren't playing a game but aliens have given them a HUD that tells them their strength, etc. But no one knows the rules so no one is strategically leveling up. It gets pretty annoying to have the main character repeatedly say throughout four books that he doesn't even know how his tamer ability works. However, without that aspect the characters focus on day to day survival and so it gives the story a real "Swiss Family Robinson" vibe that I enjoyed.
Bottom line: This book won't be for everyone, even litRPG fans, but it is better than a lot in this genre. It is just too bad the author doesn't understand that books are not meant to have cliffhanger endings.
