Alexandra “Lexie” Fleming is the hottest detective on the Norfolk Police Department. She is on the trail of the “Last Call Killer,” a brutal serial killer who preys on college girls. Lexie is driven to solve the case even though her life is falling apart. She must find a way to stay one step ahead of the killer despite her grief over the sudden death of her partner and the betrayal she feels as her marriage implodes.

When Lexie’s new partner, detective Danielle Watkins, enters her already chaotic world, the tension is undeniable. Danielle is good at her job, strong-willed and just as stubborn as Lexie, and at first they clash professionally. Danielle is also beautiful, and the electricity between the two detectives is impossible to ignore: the subtle touches, the lingering looks, the late-night conversations. Lexie is swept away by the forbidden feelings growing within her. As they track the killer, they come to trust and depend on each other, and their relationship deepens. Will they discover the killer’s identity in time to save his next victim? Will Lexie play it safe, or give in to her passion? Will the “Last Call Killer” destroy Danielle and Lexi, or will their love be unbreakable? Buy this fast-paced, plot-twisting, romantic thriller to find out.

DNF, I could only get about 18% of the way through. The main characters Dani and Lexie, are not well written. Their partnering even in their jobs is forced and poorly thought through as is the inevitable relationship.

Everyone has to start somewhere...

This I believe is the author's debut novel and while the idea behind it was a good one, it could have really benefited from having an editor or even just beta readers. The reason being is the book reads more like an outline, a rough draft even. It has ideas but nothing is flushed out. As one other reviewer stated, it's a bit scattered, timeline and ideas. Another 50-100 pages (not sure what that word count would be), a little better pacing, more focus on one crime, and maybe even the indecision of the characters, and this had the potential to be a better read.
I'm not one who enjoys adultery and cheating and honestly I really didnt really like Lexie all that much because of it. I felt at one point she was just stringing Dani along. I also kept waiting for Dani to grow a backbone and maybe some self respect and do something than just go along with whatever Lexie wanted.
Anyway, it was free on kU and despite my low rating I will read a future book by this author to see if she improves in my book :)

THIS IS THE AUTHORS DEBUT NOVEL AND IT IS AN OK READ FOR ME ONLY. I LIKED SOME OF IT SOME OF IT I DIDN'T. I LOVE READING CRIME, IN FACT, OUTSIDE OF ROMANCE, IT WOULD BE MY FAVOURITE GENRE. THERE IS ALSO M/F SEX ASWELL AS F/F SEX. ALTHOUGH NOTHING FOR EITHER IN DETAIL.

LEXIE IS A DETECTIVE WITH THE NORFOLK POLICE DEPARTMENT IN VIRGINIA. SHE IS MARRIED TO A GUY CALLED CHRIS WHO ISN'T ALL THAT HE IS CRACKED UP TO BE. I NEVER TOOK TO THE GUY AND SOON FIND OUT WHY.

DANI IS ALSO A DETECTIVE. SHE STARTED OFF WORKING IN NARCOTICS AND THEN TRANSFERRED TO THE CRIME DIVISION AT THE SAME STATION AS LEXIE.

I HAD HIGH HOPES FOR THIS BOOK BUT IT WAS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. I LIKE MY BOOKS TO KEEP YOU GUESSING WHO THE KILLER IS UPTO THE END BUT THIS ONE YOU KNOW WHO THE LAST CALL KILLER IS BEFORE YOU ARE EVEN HALF WAY THROUGH THE BOOK. THE ONLY THING THAT IS LEFT IS HOW LONG WILL THE POLICE TAKE TO FIND THEM, IF THEY FIND THEM?

AS FOR THE MAIN CHARACTERS, I DIDN'T FEEL ANY CEMISTRY BETWEEN EITHER OF THEM. BOTH CLAIM THROUGHOUT THAT BOOK THAT NEITHER OF THEM ARE LESBIANS OR ARE INTO LOVING WOMEN BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY BOTH LOVE EACH OTHER AFTER KISSING A COUPLE OF TIMES. THE STORYLINE HAD POTENTIAL BUT I THINK FOR ME, THE PACE WAS TOO QUICK. THE AUTHOR SEEMED TO STEAMROLL THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK AT 100 MPH. I ALSO WAS NOT KEEN ON HER WRITING STYLE. THAT IS JUST ME, SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT LOVE THE BOOK AND HER STYLE BUT IT IS NOT FOR ME.

AS I AM BEING ULTRA CRITICAL, THE BOOK HAS ERRORS THAT NEED IRONED OUT PARTICULARLY TOWARDS THE END OF THE STORY IN THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS.

I HAVE READ THE BOOK, IT WAS AN OK READ FOR ME BUT I WON'T READ IT AGAIN. LUCKILY FOR ME IT WAS FREE SO I DIDN'T LOSE ANYTHING BY READING IT.

2 The story was more like a outline that needs to be expanded. It didn't have enough dialogue to allow the reader to become involved with the story.

If you’re a regular here* you’ll know that Melissa Seal did an author piece with an excerpt of Unbreakable on my blog a few weeks ago. This is her first book and I was delighted to be able to support Melissa in some small way.

I bought the book towards the end of March here’s what I thought.

In the first third of the book Melissa Seal explains that Lexie whilst working the active casework on the serial killer was stymied. She is working other cases currently without a partner which is why Danielle is brought in. I thought it was interesting to get a perspective of detectives having to work more than one investigation, giving priority as leads, new information and so on allows.

The working relationship between Lexie and Danielle is strained from the beginning. Lexie is openly hostile at times. Lexie is married but finds herself attracted to Danielle, who is single. It’s a complicated personal relationship as Lexie and her husband have been separated. However, the feelings Lexie has for Danielle seem to push her closer to a reunion with her husband.

This early part of the book wasn’t quite as smooth a read as the second two-thirds. I say this because some readers won’t finish a book if they are not invested early on. However, if you stick with it then I think you will find it will be worth it.

As we move more into the investigation of the “Last Call Killer” things begin to move forward with good pace, it helps in settling the professional relationship between the two women. What happens on a personal level is not handled well by Lexie as she tussles with her feelings and sends mixed messages. Some readers may not like the overlapping of relationships.

I think Lexie and Danielle could certainly become a good working detective team. I quite liked them although there is some work to be done on on the personal level.

I enjoyed Unbreakable throughout but especially from about a third of the in when it really seem to get some rhythm and pace, the story is good and has quite the twist which I really liked.

It would be good to read more from Danielle and Lexie – get their relationship settled one way or another (in a good way: just my preference!) and another good case for the two of them – so I hope Melissa keeps writing.

Once I finished the story, I came away with the feeling that I should have stopped as soon as I realized how disjointed and poorly written this story was.

Although the main theme is the budding relationship between Lexie and Dana, the search for a pathological, sadistic murderer takes center stage. While showing the day-to-day 'beat' the two detectives share helped show their work world together, I think diverting into some of those situations only muddied the water in telling the main crux of the story. A few diversions would have been fine, but at times, it was confusing given that changes in scenes switched without any transitional paragraphs. Moving from scene to scene---sometimes scenes that weren't at all described--the story jumps around, and it is hard to keep up. Transitions between character, place, and time could have been much smoother.

I would have focused more on the relationship details and the case at hand in the earlier chapters, so as to really provide a solid stage for the later parts of the book. As far as the later chapters, the story does get more and more intense, with many more details emerging about the sadistic murderer. The culmination of the story is abrupt, but given this is meant to lead into the second story in book 2, makes sense.

I think with some serious editing, better transitions between scenes, and getting rid of extraneous side stories, this story could be much better.

What an incredible but yet horrifying story

This is the first book i have read by this author and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Dani and Lexi are homicide detectives. They become partners after a loss. The two Become extremely close. Lexi is married to Chris. They had been separated for some time but had talked every day, though living in two different states. They separated after Chris had been caught involved in a Ponzi scheme. They were thinking of giving their marriage another try. Lexi had mixed mixed feelings. But the horrific case Dani and Lexi were on was to save young women's lives. The hunt took them out of state.
The action In this 1st book kept me engaged. i couldnt put it down & finished in one afternoon. All three characters had flaws. But a couple had redeeming qualities after a rocky start.
The detectives were blindsided in more ways then one.
You won't be disappointed in the series.
On to the 2nd book in the series!
Great writing Melissa! Thank you for your service!!

lot of potential

The plot is good, is definitely a great idea but the storytelling is lacking. I picked this book because the description was enticing and it was relatively short. It took me a lot longer to finish reading than books I’ve read that have double the number of pages because the writing felt rushed and all over the place and I just kept losing interest. The only reason I finished reading it is cause I started and I hate to leave a book unfinished. I like series because I enjoy seeing how authors become more proficient at their craft and part of me would like to read the next hoping to see improvement but I think is going to be a while before I ventured to do so if I can convince myself to do it. I would rather read an obnoxiously longer book if the stories are well developed so hoping next time the author allows herself more time even if it means a lot more writing. Keep at it

This is a good story that would make a great series.

A good story, but the read is almost as dry as a police report. Dialogue, adjectives could paint a masterpiece of what is essentially a fairly decent sketch. This author has a good imagination and with some polish will make a good tale a great story. Looking forward to her continued growth!

Let down

The book was so fast paced with multiple errors. There were wrong descriptors, stumbling over word placement. I recommend the author re-read the book for errors. If I had bought the book I would be disappointed but I read it under kindle unlimited so no money involved. On to the next book.

Unbreakable #1 Unbreakable by Melissa Seal
This is a good mystery but in places bogged down in extra detail. The romance was done nicely but felt predictable. I enjoyed it in the end though it turned into a slow read. This is a series and I am trying decide if I want to push on to book two. This is a 3-star read.

Good story but needs heavy editing

The lack of editing, incorrect use of punctuation distracts from the story as does the one instance of lack of continuity. Hopefully the writer will improve these things in her next book.

Promising!

This is the first book by Melissa Seal that I've read. I will definitely be looking for the rest of this series and other books by this author. Vibrant characters and the compelling storyline with plenty of twists make this a great afternoon read!

A wonderful romance and manhunt for a serial killer

I greatly enjoyed being introduced to Dani and Lexie. While neither detective was.looking for romance, they found it with each other. Their romance.and hunt for The Last Call Killer made for an enjoyable read.

Good idea

I feel like the story line was rushed and was hoping to see elements get expanded on. The plot and su. Plots were there but I feel like they never really developed.
