For the first few years of my life, I have been nothing but a Dragon's Girl - someone paid for hire.
Until I'm propositioned an offer I can't refuse.
Now married, I finally believe I'll get a fairytale happily-ever-after. Jokes on me, right? When my abusive husband turns up dead and my step-daughter finds herself in the hospital, I become the prime suspect in a murder case.
The thing is...I didn't murder my husband. Nor did I harm my bratty step-daughter (who happens to be the same age as me).
And I think the real murderer is going to come after me next.
With the help of my sexy-as-sin law professor, my kind neighbor, the quiet and dangerous Phillip, and an energetic police detective, I might just uncover the truth of my husband's murder.
If I don't get killed first.
Toxicity is a reverse harem contemporary stand-alone novel, meaning the FMC won't have to choose between her love interests. It contains strong language, sexual themes, and violence. Reader's discretion is advised.

Wow, I love retellings - and I need more from this series!!
Toxicity was a book that I flew through. In it, you will meet Mallie. Now her life sucks because she has been owned by someone for most of it. When the opportunity to get married shows up, she takes it. Yet, she knew the entire time that she was moving onto another monster. So, in a way, she knew that her life wasn't going to get a bit better.
Throughout the book, we see that she is sort of meeting the guys who could be in her own little harem. We also learn a bit about her own home life - an abusive husband who creeped me out and a spoiled step-daughter who is the same age as her. These two people were vile and I hated them from the very start. So, it wasn't that hard to see how things were going to go down.
Yes, this book was highly predictable and yes - I ate it all up. Definitely going to continue on with this series just because I want to know what's going to happen in each book. Also, yes, I did read this series out of complete order and no, I don't care.
After reading the preview in the previous book, I didn’t think I’d like this one. The MC was over the top and the flirting with the professor was a bit cliche. I wasn’t looking forward to it.
As I’ve realised with most of May’s books, the characters are loud, bold and feels like an action movie crammed into words. It feels like being shouted at in places, their abuse and situations aren’t subtle but shoved in front of your face demanding acknowledgement. This one is no different.
I do like the play on Mallie’s name and the guys. Each one was sweet, protective and had their own issues. Favourite character was I’m gonna say Phillip.
So far in this series it’s been embezzlement and trafficking, animal cruelty and crime family. This one goes further with teenage prostitution, depression, abuse and murder, so a few trigger warnings.
But as dramatic as the issues are, the romance is just as sweet and just as over the top, as well as there being plenty of sex. Rounded off with another decent epilogue.
This book was nothing like I expected. From start to finish I was shocked and surprised. The heroine only knows a life of ‘sexual and emotional’ turmoil. When Mallie thinks life is throwing her a second chance, she’s left reeling and stuck in a arguably worse situation. This wasn’t a typical love story and it felt a bit disattached to me personally. Most of the MCs men AKA her soon to be harem, Mallie has known for years. There was history between them and animosity on Mallies end (as the men essentially in her eyes sat back while she suffered at the hands of her husband). That history did not convey right to me and given all that Mallie had went through I’m surprised she didn’t want some man free time for once in her life even for just a short while. It’s actually kind of sad because Mallie is and always has been searching just for someone to actually give a shit about her. Someone to treat her like a human, one that mattered as something more than just a body. I wasn’t blown away by the storyline, I liked Mallies backstory and how it coincided with Phillips but overall it felt all over the place. Again I think that’s because there’s a perceived history between Mattie and most of her men. I didn’t enjoy the addition of another guy literally at the end-one whom we don’t even get to see a minor relationship develop between them. I did like how different the story was but it was just ok for me. Still love the author and look forward to reading anything she publishes 😘
The biggest thing that bothered me was that she makes a dress on her spinning wheel. That’s not a thing! She could have made some yarn on her wheel and then knitted a dress or wove fabric for a dress.... but that’s not how it’s written. A spinning wheel is not a sewing machine 🤷🏻♀️ (this didn’t affect my overall rating)
As far as the rest of the story- I think the author tried to pack tooooo much into a fairly short standalone. There simply wasn’t enough time to get to know the characters and to fully explore the plot. It’s a good story premise, but just not as developed as it needed to be. There were also some pretty over the top moments and I feel like the subject matter may have been too heavy at times for this length of book (again, not enough time to give these moments enough attention)
Once upon a time, when I was still very new to the reverse harem genre and exploring what kind of stories I liked I already stumbled upon this series. I read one of the books and loved it to pieces and I was planning on reading the others, especially this one. However, as happens quite often to me, I didn't read the others. Until Amazon had a big sale and all Katie May books were offered for a great price. I got myself this book and I couldn't not read it any longer.
I needed a few chapters to get into the story, but once the action started and once the mystery started I started liking the story more and more. I can understand though that May wants to give this story a rewrite. It feels like there's quite a lot crammed into not too many pages. In a way it's nice to have some shorter books to read quickly, but I think this story does deserve a little more time, a little more emotional depth and a little more room for the characters to connect.
As a Dutchie who has grown up quite sheltered, everything that happened in this story sounded a little extreme. I understand that there are harsher worlds than the one I live in and I'm certain that all of the elements in this stories are realistic, but since it's so foreign to me I also had a little trouble connecting with the plot and believing that a story like this would really happen to someone, especially since this is a contemporary and not a fantasy.
However, the main character truly made up for that. I quite enjoyed how she was a great mix of a feisty young women and still not a true fighter. I sounds a little weird, but it was refreshing to see that even a strong woman, who can take care of herself and who does know how to fight, can end up in horrible situations and has trouble making it out of an abusive relationship. People in abusive relationships are not shy or weak. On the contrary.
Well this book was different to what I have been usually reading. I liked it. It is dark and the mystery part was good I didn't see that coming. I liked the characters. Phillip was my favorite and I liked how he was always really in her background without her knowing. It was one of those books where she thinks only she knows but it turns out that there were others that knew and they knew more then her.
This was a tough, emotional read. My heart was in my throat for most of it. Katie May handled these dark topics with a delicate sensitivity; I never felt like the triggers were used for shock value or didn't fit the narrative. Each twist felt organic, each small resolution leading to the final climax meshed well with the whole story.
I was so entertained with the story I glossed past any grammar or spelling issues there might have been; I genuinely do not remember. Hallmark of a great author!
When you have a gallon of story but only a shot glass of a container to try and hold it all in.
When you have a gallon of story but only a shot glass of a container to try and hold it all in. I really found myself struggling with this story. Not soo much the darkness or it but god much detail
there was to it that wasn’t given the room/freedom it really needed. This story had some parts really spot on. Soo much soo I was very pleasantly surprised and felt the writer either had to have known ppl who have experienced depression and abuse or just did some damn good research. I was gonna say experienced it herself but I don’t know hoe she could have kept it soo muted at times or allowed such a rushed pace I’d she had. Soo I’m hoping just research. As I’m eluding to,what bothered me was the rushed pace of what is a very complicated backstory /set up and story line . You have Mallie who from the ages of around 13 or 14 to 18/19 was a forced sex worker and then possibly sold ( unknown to her) to her husband . A husband who was one of her “clients” ,who even after “marriage” still treated as a prostitute., only like before he beat her. He beat her like he owned her. Now see all that alone should be just one book,w/maybe the monster of a “husband “ being killed at the end and part two picking up where that left off. There’s just too much going on here for one book. If that wasn’t enough all her “men” are wounded “warriors” ( of a sort in their own right ) . Phillip, the silent tattooed “Prince”( in her mind) is suffering just as much as her in a lot of the same ways as her). Byron her sexy sweet neighbor. Might be sensitive and sweet, but he too has his own issues and hurt he’s dealing with. And I really got a bit ticked off when I heard her blaming them from not rescuing her from not only a situation she’d given to up on saving herself from but But seeing just how very little she knew about them it was really unrealistically selfish of her. If she’d ever allowed herself to really open her eyes and have more than the barest of passing acquaintances with either man, she’d had known hating them for not rescuing her was deeply unfair . But honestly , while I can kinda get the writers giving themselves limits how long they’ll give themselves to write each villainess’s story for either maybe continuity or just to push themselves to see how creative they can be in such a limited amount of space . But really I feel like they just short changed us all. I’m walking away here a tad uneasy. I wanted to like this more . A story like Mallie’s isn’t often told or if it is ,is isn’t told well. And from my perspective,m talking the depression. There are times with Mallie and her just wanting to die ,to like herself be continue Ro be destroyed in her comfortable/uncomfortable hell that is her life, made soo much sense. I got it . I felt it when she was on the bridge and I. Am. Nothing. Was all that was playing in her head. I. Got. It. Been there. Just minus the bridge . But she also has “H”s who are bleeding out emotionally as well. H’s who she has lain burdens on that weren’t theirs to carry and blames them for issues that aren’t theirs are their faults . Complicated stuff that needs time to be understood and understanding, that unfortunately the writer doesn’t give either them or us to have. Too much is crammed in here. Everyone is crazed or crazy or hurting on some level and none of it gets the time or understanding or explanation it needs. I can’t honestly say this felt like a “true” RH to me. Everyone had some feels but it all felt too rushed. Too many deep topics and not enough time . If your going to rush and have even a semi “believable” coming together of sooo many souls “unfortunate” or otherwise ,you need to keep the complicated or dark background stuff to a minimum soo it can be more of background noise that might enrich the story but not overwhelm it and definitely not have it as your center feature. Decent idea and premise but too much ground to cover in the time given. Writer could have had an amazing story here if she made this at least two full length or even better three or four. But too much in too little time .
Toxicity is part of a collection of stories by various authors that take the well-known and usually hated villains and gives us a complete 180 twist on the familiar story. Katie May takes the familiar story of Sleeping Beauty and quite literally turns it on its head. When you grab this book make sure to clear your schedule and get comfortable because you're not going to want to put this book down until the very end. Now, be forewarned...this book is NOT fantasy or paranormal novel. It does flow into the reverse harem realm, but this story is a twist on a fairy tale without the fantasy element to it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it regardless. As you begin Toxicity prepare to meet Mallie. A young woman/girl pimped out to men and made to do what they want. She gets an offer that she honestly could have only dreamed of...a chance at a different life from what she has experienced since her young teen years. But she's not going to get her "happily ever after." Instead what she gets is a life full of control, abuse, and pain. My heart honestly broke so many times reading this story and I simply wanted to just grab Mallie and give her a hug. She honestly dealt with so much from so many sides. I'm thankful that she has a good friend in Nat. The romance aspect in this story is well-done. I initially thought that it was rushed in certain aspects, but I quickly through that thought out the window when the author comes back later and gives me the backstory I was so desperately craving. This story is full of suspense and thrills and it was so hard to put down as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I have to say that this story was expertly written. If someone asked me what it was that I didn't like about this book...I honestly couldn't say a thing. The things that I wanted to "complain" about the author tactfully came back and explained. Certain aspects that I wanted to gripe about only ended up adding to helping elevate the "realness" of the character. It made her more believable and almost like a real person that you could go out and meet. Yes, this story has mentions of abuse and more, but it is not done graphically or overdone. The author has taken such care with this book and I can only say how much I applaud her for this. This book is so well done and I could not get enough of it. Once I started reading I couldn't put this book down as I wanted/needed to know what was going to happen next. The suspense, the thrills, the romance, the steamy scenes...it was absolutely perfect. I can't wait to read more from this author. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you love books by this author then I highly recommend you grab this book.
I like reading retellings, especially ones of fairytales, and this one is one of a kind. While Sleeping Beauty wasn't my favorite fairytale Maleficent is an interesting villain and probably one of my favorites, only because she never had to be the villain but the "good guys" made her one. Mallie never was a villain she was just dealt a poor hand in life and if anything she was a survivor, the life she lived wasn't a perfect one but she survived and became stronger than ever. I loved her guys too because they tried so hard to help her and were there when she needed someone to lean on in the bad times, while they could maybe have tried harder they did the best the could. Also her friend Nat was amazing, I mean not many friends would tell someone they deserve a harem for the sh*tty life they have. The reveal of who was behind everything wasn't to shocking and was kind of ironic since they thought Mallie was the villain when really it was then all along.
A bit more serious from this author but still with some of her signature humor , Katie May brings us a tale of Mallie FaCent , an emotional rollercoaster , that will make you cry and give you hope . Get ready for the heart wrenching tale of an emotionally , physically and financially abused heroine that manages to fight for her own HEA , take the trigger warning seriously as this one brings it close to home , with a realistic look at the mindset of the abused , and be ready to cheer for Mallies spirit to overcome and fight to be the person she deserves to be . I expect this may be a bit controversial, but truth generally is , and Katie May brings you truth with Mallie and her struggle with her inner demons .
I was recommended this book by a friend. They did warn me there were some dark aspects to it. I did like the characters. There was some parts up and down and I felt for the main character. I was wondering in a couple parts if there was more to the story than what we were being shown and like how the author tied things together. It did have the dark things but then dark things do happen to people so could understand it in this case even if wished the things didn't happen. I really don't want to say to much to give any spoilers so I will say I would read more by this author. I liked the flow of the story, the characters, and how it all worked together.
This modern day, retelling of Maleficent's story (from Sleeping Beauty) was for me, one of my favourite books based on a fairytale and I have a hard out love of fairytale retelling! Katie May has done a fantastic job of making Mallie a vulnerable young woman, stuck in an abusive marriage to a man who "rescued" her from her life as a teenage prostitute. This story is dark, it has some really difficult themes but it really has an uplifting ending that made me so happy. Stand alone too so no cliffhanger here!
This is such an intriguing story...the beginning gives you hope that Mallie’s prince has saved her, but you immediately find out that her prince is a true villain. There are so many twists and turn in this book and the real villain is more twisted than most fairy tales could conjure up. The guys are deliciously sweet and focused on Mallie’s well-being despite being slow to save her initially. This book has it all-an engaging plot, mystery and villainy for days, romance that endures, and characters that keep you flipping the pages!! Another win for Katie May!!
This story took me by complete surprise. I knew it would be a good read, all of May’s work is, but I expected a fun, easy read. Oh my was I mistaken, in the best way! This book. So many feels. My heart still hurts for what Mallie, our FMC endures. There was still some of May’s signature snark and humor, but the emotions ran deep with this one. I highly recommend, but be wary of the trigger warnings as there are several sensitive/possible triggering subjects touched upon.
This was really good. Mallie FaCent is a modern day Maleficent with a heart of gold. She's had a very hard life. There may be some parts of her past that could be triggering to readers so be wary. In the end she decides she needs to be her own hero and she does her best to be just that. She has a great group of men who really love her and a completely awesome best friend. The story actually follows along with the sleeping beauty plot pretty well. Bottom line, I enjoyed it quite a bit and I'll definitely read the others in the series.
First half of the book is intriguing, I lost interest in it around the time this distrusting young lady accused her love interest of not "saving" her. How could someone that was raised in not trusting anyone think that she would be saved? The conflict between expecting to be save and the strength of character it would take to survive her back story gave the MC no credibility. How could she not even question their 'love'? the distrust would have been a mile wide. She made no plans or intentions of saving herself. Which any woman would have, rainy day plans.
Mallie is a complex, intriguing MC. She is a survivor. Her “prince” was no prince, and after he is murdered, her life is turned upside down again. Her relationships with Phillip, Byron, Roman, and Deluca are each unique, and I liked that they each had their own pace. The guys each have secrets of their own. I had my suspicions about the real villain, but the reveal was even more twisted than I thought. I also loved Mallie’s friend Nat, everyone needs a friend like Nat!
Adult. Contemporary. Rh. 4 guys. Like all Katie May's creations, I absolutely loved it! It was actually more on the serious side than the comedic sense that you usual get with her. This felt real. I dont know what it is arm, maybe with a little more reflection of the store I'll now, but I can tell you this one will probably stick with me for awhile. It was a excellent read.
This one I wasn't prepared for. It was a bit heart wrenching at times. I'm one to laugh than cry and the laughter wasn't in this one, but it was well written as everything by Katie is. M had a hard life and luckily for her she had men to help her get through to the other side and the strength in herself. I loved the relationship between her and Nat-that best friend craziness some people are lucky to have and find.
I love this version of Maleficent and Aurora. I always have a soft spot for "villans", they're just misunderstood is what I say. Mal goes through alot to try and function, not even trying to get a HEA, but after all that shes been through she deserves it. I'm glad she had people to back her up and help her see that she had so much more to offer the world
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is along the darker side. So be warned. But I really liked it. I won't give away any spoilers but I knew it!!! Meaning the who done it part. Storyline to me was fantastic. The ending of the book was just what I needed. Absolutely loved it. Author did a fantastic job writing this story. Now to look into reading the other books in this villains series.
Wow. This was dark, raw, gritty, and totally believable. I mean I’ve not been in the same circles as Mallie, but I could unfortunately envision that very similar events happen more often than we’d think. I loved it. It was emotional and hard not to like our main characters and hate the real evil
This book was a quick read that can show where love can be wicked or where it can heal. Not knowing how to go about her life when her not so loving husband falls dead. This story was delectable with the characters and plot line be perfectly described to allow you to feel like your watching a movie. I recommend it as a great stand alone.
This was everything! I loved the writing in this book and the way the story played out! I was kept on my toes throughout the book! Mallie FaCent (HarHar, very clever!) was an absolute fighter! She needed some help along the way, but she grew into herself so beautifully! Love the idea behind this collection!
Really didn't like dragon tattoo aspect but was a surprise hea. Physical emotion and mental abuse.*beware*. Alot of plot seemed to just fall into place. Not a bad thing but made it a bit dull. The fact that she just forgave her boyfriends after being so mad was annoying. There weren't alot of people introduced that could have been suspects.

The retellings in this serious are just kicking butt. They’re so unique from any other “spin” I’ve seen put on the originals. Mal just kept going from one bad situation to and even worse one but thankfully she persevered and got her happy ending.
This book was amazing. It touched my heart and made me cry. I love that she gets a HEA. She totally deserves it. I’m not gonna lie I didn’t see that ending coming. This author did a Great job!
This was a good read but a little over the top at the same time. Great characters and a good plot but how do men supposedly love and stand by while your abused? For years at that. Yes people I know this is fiction but that's a bit much.
