Evans Family Saga #2

Bryn's War: Book Two of the Evans Family Saga

Rate this book
Bryn felt sickened as he felt the ground shake, knowing that one of the two shafts had collapsed. Now, he stood in the pump room and watched the two thrumming pumps as they pulled water out of the deep mines. He knew that one of them would strain when the water became fouled with coal dust and debris from the collapse and if it was pump number two, it would mean that his father and older brothers were probably dead. It seemed like hours as he watched the pump work, but it had only been minutes since the first intense vibrations had struck. He knew that if pump number two began to labor his plans to leave Carbondale would be one more of the coal mine’s victims. Just when he planned to check on pump number one, he saw the pipe to the second pump begin to pulse before the belt on the drive wheel squealed in protest and his worst nightmare had come to pass.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

This is book two of the Evan’s Family Saga. It is as good or better than volume one. This book covers Dylan’s younger brother, Bryn, and his service in the Union Army during the Civil War. The story moves right along. I enjoyed the fact there was no foul language and there was a moral to the story. It is a good old-fashion story. I can’t wait to start volume three.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The story is twelve hours and three minutes long. Jim Meskimen does a good job narrating the story.

A good, solid effort

I was surprised to find the turn around from Dylan's story so quickly, was expecting a longer wait. Can't fault CJP for supplying material to his readers. This was a solid effort, just a little too wordy and perhaps too many story arcs to be one of CJPs best. That being said it is a good story and readers will find the familiar, entertaining CJP characters and events. It will be interesting to see where the saga continues next as the epilogue introduces a ton of youngins. Looking forward to the next offering. Just a side note to echo another reviewer; Gwen seems to be the most interesting and well developed character.

LEAVING THE COAL MINES

The Evans family who emigrated to the United States from Wales, where the men worked the mines. Now this family that contains five brothers, the youngest is Bryn Evans, who started working for the mines when the family settled in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. They all earned their
living working the mines. These mines were unsafe, constant cave ins, air filled with micro-coal dust which eventually left these poor men with "Black Lung Disease" which filled the air-sacs of the lungs leaving very little room for oxygen which all need to breath in. The mine owners didn't or don't care about the miners, because they were/are replaceable. So many men especially the Irish and Welsh, Polish worked those mines. Bryn Evans started working the mines at the age of nine in the pump room shack, which also contained a cot. Nine years old maintaining the motors that pumped water out of the mines. This job was previously handled by his brother Dylan who left to work on a Paddle boat that transported goods, people, animals up and down the Missouri River. Then Dylan left headed to Omaha, Nebraska as a newly appointed United States Deputy Marshal.
Life wasn't easy in those coal mining towns and folks did the best they could to keep food on the table and roof over their heads.
This story also explains how customs of the old
world were brought over and the wives and children were expected to live by them. Boys were expected to marry and carry the name, while young girls were offered the nunnery or husbands were chosen for them. Arranged marriages, not good, lots of unhappiness and domestic violence, alcoholism abound, these were hard times and certain parts you'll read about.
Life is life and you do your best to achieve happiness. These poor women were pregnant every year, large families. These young girls didn't reach the age of twenty and they had given birth to three children. Their bodies weren't given time to heal!!..such was life. This author is usually happy with men and women meetings, this Bryn's
War, I find leans toward the dark side or murky side of love and life. Maybe, I still think there's still a chance to meet your soul mate as C.J.Petite has written about in other stories.😉

Cannot say anything but something good about this outstanding western masterpiece of heartwarming entertainment about our old American western folklore adventures. I was hooked from chapter one, with Bryn and his exceptionally outstanding family, and how well they depended on each other's support. Great job by another outstanding western author!.

Definitely another five star extravaganza of fast moving adventures from beginning to end, and the detailed accomplishments never ends. I was definitely impressed with the coverage of the Civil War, as Bryn's involvement certainly touches the core of reality, and his ensuing injuries almost causes his death. Mr. Petit is one of the most meticulous authors, who certainly does his homework before striking the first key. This is one of his most heartwarming renditions I have had the opportunity to follow. Starts strong and ends with an extraordinarily outstanding descriptiveness of Bryn and his many successful accomplishments!
A very descriptive, and heartwarming, rendition of romance, Civil War escapades, entertaining revelations of the U. S. Marshal's service and Bryn's finally settling in on his dream ranch. Very touching rendition of a realistic family that sets their goals high and accomplishes many of them through dedication and commitment.
Certainly recommend this story to all readers, as as there are ongoing goals, and accomplishments, by a dedicated family, who follow their dreams, and accomplishes them wit determination and hard work. A very compassionate, and wholesome, story that touches anyone's heartstrings immediately and never lets go. Definitely a family-friendly oriented adventure that will appease your most demanding desires. Your loss, if you don't try this outstanding story, as it starts fast and accelerates from beginning to end!😄

Another good Evans family read. This book had a story line about his military service, entering as an enlisted man, promoted to corporal and then sergeant and eventually appointed an officer in the Northern Army. His involvements were interesting and his recognition was great. Before he left the service he discovered that the woman he planned to spend his life with had married someone else, and he wasn't certain in what direction he wanted to go. He returned to serving as a deputy US Marshal, and turned his life in a better direction. There were a number of typographically errors in the book that caused the reader to pause as an attempt was made to decipher what was meant, but you discovered that it was an additional unnecessary word or a mistake that wouldn't be identified by spell check. Still one of my favorite authors.

This is the second book in the Evans family saga. We followed Bryn from the steam engine he had taken over from Dylan as a young boy. He left when his father and brothers were killed in a collapse of a mine shaft. Together with his widowed mother, young nephew and former mine boss traveled by steam engine to be with his brother. He wanted to be his own person but also wanted to have the support of his older brother. Affected by the treatment of slaves he was determined to serve with the Union during the Civil War. He was successful in battles and was promoted during the war. He was severely wounded in a friendly fire incident and returned to his family home intent on serving as a deputy under his older brother. He met and married a young woman who supported his desire to start a horse ranch in the west. The conclusion of this book has him starting out on his own adventure leaving an extended family with numerous young children to continue his own journey.
It will be interest to see which family member will continue this very interesting saga.

Bryn's War: Book Two of the Evans Family Saga

CJP again blew my mind when I read this book. I love that he is finally doing a series, it makes so much sense because we see so much in the characters of his books, they seem to be real people and take on their own personalities that I like to see more of in this second book. Bryn is Dylan's brother but he knew that just like Dylan had made his own road to walk, that Bryn would have to do the same. His choices will not be the same that his brother would do but that was just the start of Bryn's road to walk. Awesome , Awesome Book!!! I hope that there is a third book!! 👏BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO 👏

A CJP. Civil War/Western Action Adventure (58) (BW) (EFS - 2)

CJP has penned a Civil War and western action adventure titled, "Byrn's War", which begins with Byrn working as a temporary deputy marshal then when the war begins he enlists and is immediately involved in the fighting. His western background has taught him much about the different types of land areas and their traps and he and his men are able to avoid those traps, but the death and damage is terrible. In fact Byrn is injured and discharged. He returns to the family home to regain his health and eventually work as a Deputy US Marshal. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

I was hooked from chapter one, with Bryn and his family in fact the same happened to the first story and I expect the following stories will be well thought out too. This was a solid effort, maybe a little too wordy, for me it had too much about the war. I don’t usually read war stories because they are too sad. Having had a Grand-father involved in the Civil War and a brother who was in the Army. It made you feel like you were actually there. I cannot say anything but good about this story.
I look forward to the next C.J. Petit book. As soon as I finish the current story, I start looking for the next one.

# 2 🐴🐎. Do Love My Cowboys....

It was ok, but not as good as the first one. Arial didn’t deserve Bryn in the first place.Hated to see him get hurt but better before than after..
Dylan was best lead, had more brains than all the rest put together. They all have too many kids like money grows on trees then they worry about how to feed everyone .Something happens to husband then they can't take care of them all. I'm all for all the loving but cut down on the rug rats 😩🤗 moving on to #3,

War's hell

For all the inexperienced war is most difficult to grasp. The civil war war the most horrible, death came to many in different ways from diarrhea, and bad water, recovery from war trauma itself, and above all else just the drudgery of everyday life of a soldier. Even today the horror of war is poorly understood by those who have not felt death and destruction to the human body and and soul.

Bryn's Life

Bryn had to make decisions on what he wanted to do about his future. He has a career as a Union soldier during the Civil War. His soldier's lives were in his hand and he did whatever he needed to do to safeguard them. He went thru heartache with his girl Ariel and later found Erin, perfect mate. He did somewhat follow his and older brother Dylan and learned a lot from him. Lots of action and life struggles.

I enjoy the author's storytelling so I'm starting book three in the saga. It has been annoying to get tripped up by misspelled words, missing words and grammatical error. However that won't deter me from finishing the series.

I love family sagas and I highly recommend reading them. I tend to read a lot of suspense series and I find this novel to be a soothing balm and buffer from political news, global warming, worry what the future will hold for my grandkids, etcetera.

Bryns war

Great read. I normally hate war books but this one held my interest most of the time. It is a very family oriented and engaging book. Had good clean morals until nearly the end wish he had continued with that story line. Pettit does a great job of weaving an action packed but also a book with loving caring human interactions. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy reading stories of the 18th century west.

Excellent!

Marvelous good story! The war scenes have a ring of truth. Once upon a time I saw a cartoon depectng war in every age. It showed a huge bottomless pit and people were marching into it. Tanks, aircraft, and ships were going in it also, I don't believe our current crop of politicians are any better, the only ones they take care of is themselves. Vote out all the rascals and Democrats.

Great!

I always look forward to the next C.J. Petit book. This one was especially interesting in that I am from Tenn, and have visited Ft.Donaldson many times. And the doctor who treated Bryn shared the name of my great-great grandfather, Jacob Steiner. A great book that leaves one anxiously awaiting the next!

Petit's work leaves you wishing the author would write faster

This book, as is true of Dylan's part of the story, leaves you just as you yell, "What happens next?" I gave this book only four stars because is is filled with distracting typos. This is a first for this author and editing team. Hopefully it will be an exception.

Excellent Sequel to the Evan's Family

Always a great read by this author. In depth information about how life was 100+ years ago. A joy to read about a well balanced family, going through every day challenges.
Just enough romance and just enough excitement to make his books enjoyable. Keep them coming, always waiting for the next one!

Evans family life during the civil war.

A great story involving several couple's that met around the time of the Civil War. It tells how people lived, fell in love and suffered through the horrific events of war. This is a three story saga of this period in history. It is a heart wrenching story that is very gripping, hard to put the books down, very exciting.

Brilliant

Loved these two books. Was unable to put the down. The story lines were great and ever changing. It made u feel like you were actually there. I can imagine in them days how you just fell into a career.
Was disappointed that I read the last two books first. But just gives me more to go at.
Thank you

A great fictional story about a volatile time in our history.

I highly recommend this fictional series about the Evans family's journey beginning in the 1850's and beyond. C.J. Petit does a masterful job of creating very interesting characters in great plots without the use of foul language.

Wow this book is so good!

I really enjoyed this book, my great great grandfather was in the war between the States, I always enjoy the stories of that timeline. To make it better, I had family who worked in the hospital in this book! Can't wait to see what happens after they get the horse ranch!

I love this author!

C.J. Petit is a great story teller! I've enjoyed every book I've read by him. There are editing errors that might bother some critical readers, but I'm reading for the enjoyment of a well told historical fiction story.

Looking forward to the next book in this series!

Evans Family Saga

Bryn's War is book two of the series by C. J. Petit. A great story of Bryn's experience in the war and the following years after. The romance between Bryn and Erin I hope leads to another book.

Great read

I enjoyed the story because it had heartbreak and love in it. A man loves a woman and it didn't work out for them. He finds a new love and marries. I didn't think the author would come with a new book so soon. Great read.
