James squeezed her waist to prove to himself that she was real, and when he spoke, the words matched the love that spilled from his heart; words that would haunt her for all of eternity. “I'm not afraid anymore.”

In the Fall of 1985, Jameson Brooks spends his days working for Frank's Moving. At night, he attempts to fill the void of an empty heart with one-night stands, fueled by alcoholic binges. Lina is a dancer, and a lonely spirit. She isn't interested in the advances of the handsome, yet rough bachelor that lives above her. Her demons still follow her. Her abusive husband's ghost lingers, along with that of a very shady newspaper editor. When Lina disappears, love fuels James' drive to discover the truth by using the clue hidden in the note he finds underneath his door. "Postscript" is a ghost story, a love story, and a story that will make you believe. It includes horror elements and flashbacks to the early 1900s in Prohibition Canada.

This author’s on twitter saying she NEEDS to put slurs in her books for “accuracy” so I’m gonna pass on all of them

eta: rating reflects my absolute lack of interest or desire in reading this book. which falls within GR’s TOS, so if the author feels it necessary to share this review on Twitter like she did another, well, there you have it.

***
my impression of this book is the author just wanted an excuse to use a homophobic slur w/ impunity. and apparently readers aren’t allowed to be upset by the use of a homophobic slur.

true story: a homophobic slur today was a homophobic slur in 1985. and yes, some people are in fact triggered by those slurs.

the author really doesn’t get to tell a reader whether or not they can be upset about it. so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Swagger and Suspense

Jameson Brooks is a protagonist that’s hard to love and even harder to hate. Postscript slowly unravels the, often heart-breaking, stories of James and Lina - two people seemed destined to meet and find some comfort in sharing their stories.

Author Barbara Avon weaves another of her psychological, paranormal, suspense stories with her usual flair for painting unique and succinct pictures with her words. I am a big fan of the specific details she uses to bring her characters to life and Postscript is no exception. Even with the highly flawed characters that live in this book, it’s hard not to become attached and cheer for them.

Another terrific story by this author.

This books uses a slur that in no way impacts the story and is completely useless overall, it was unnecessary and contributed to hurting an oppressed people; and can be very triggering to that audience, without even so much as a warning to add on.

A well written and hauntingly bittersweet tale.

This sublime ghost story contained just the right amount of creep factor and tenderness. I’m in awe of the author’s use of description and style to tell a story woven with believable mystery and romance. I’m excited to suggest this book to others and to check out more of her writing.

You know the feeling when you know there’s a twist, and you know it’s going to crush you. Nailed it. I don’t want to tell anything but I was as heartbroken as the protagonist. Nice work! I’ll have to grab another. Good quick read that doesn’t disappoint!

The paranormal romance, Postscript by Barbara Avon, delivers the tempestuous heat and sanguine ease reminiscent of the vibe of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The two main characters, James and Lina, succumb to desire, while struggling with their haunting pasts. P.S. A great read!

Avon’s Postscript is a tough book to review because it comes with a twist that takes it from the standard “Boy and girl meet and fall in love and then some stuff happens but it all works out in the end” and turns it into something more magical. Not magic as in pulling rabbits out of hats, more like magical in the way things are not always as they seem but really they are it’s just that you’ve been seeing them wrong.

It’s part romance and part ghost story and overall a lot of fun with an absolutely perfect ending.

What an absolutely delightful read. I found myself skipping words to get to the next sentence. After slowing myself down with a still eager need to turn the page, this writer did not disappoint. Well written, easy to read, fabulous story line. The ending was perfect. You know it’s a good book when you turn the last page and wish you could meet the characters. A definite book for the beach, the plane or when you just need a simple but sweet love story. I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

I enjoyed it

This is the first book I’ve read by Barbara but it won’t be the last. I throughly enjoyed the storyline, even though there were a few times I became aggravated with the heroine. But that’s okay. The author made me feel something about both main characters and that’s more than I can say for a lot of authors.
I do recommend this book. It’s a good read.

Postscript is the second work by Barbara Avon I’ve read and I’m fascinated with the intricate way she weaves beautiful prose with tragic stories and soul-touching poetry.

Postscript is a psychological, bittersweet love story between two heartbroken people, James and Lina, each with a tragic past who find comfort in each other. To be honest, love stories are a bit out of my comfort zone as I prefer fantasy and adventure more. I read Postscript because I enjoyed Barbara’s other book Q.W.E.R.T.Y. that I reviewed here, and I’m fond of her unique writing style.

I wondered about the paranormal element of this book while reading, until the end when it clicked. I did not see that coming!

I loved the opening poem

Where do emotions go to die?

The sea is a vessel for tears millennia.

A Winter's storm captures breaths of wrath.

Pain is poured into vats of steel.

Elation dances upon a Summer breeze.

Love is the stardust that lands upon a caregiver's

nose,

Or upon a mother's lips.

One of the things I appreciate in Barbara Avon’s writing style is the way she sets the scene giving enough details to see it clearly, yet not too many to distract from the story. Reading this book felt like watching an old classic Hollywood movie. Sometimes I got a film noir vibe and even thought about Sin City at times.

Here’s an example of setting the scene (I cut the actual scene) and it comes full circle:

"Six men and a lone woman lined the bar at Fox's. The air was thick with smoke, and a certain melancholy lingered. The bartender played therapist, comedian, and expert host, as much to gather a few extra dollars for the tip jar, as to stave off the ghost called Loneliness. A couple of young kids stood at the Jukebox, feeding it quarters to elicit the latest Top 10 from the machine. A young couple occupied the pool table, flirting dangerously by using their cue sticks as poking devices.

[...]

The bar lights brightened. The jukebox went silent.

"Closing time was like a New Year's Eve party on its last legs.

I won’t talk much about the plot rather than say it’s an emotional rollercoaster of joy and despair, a  love story between two broken people, survivors of different kinds of abuse, kindred spirits who lean on each other. The story is sprinkled with flashbacks from their past, whether it’s abuse episodes or turning points in their lives. You think you know where this is going, but trust me, you don’t. Watch out for the end!

Postscript by Barbara Avon is a melancholic mix of 1980s nostalgia, romance, and paranormal elements.

Postscript is a carefully crafted novel set in Ottawa. The story is predominantly set in a single Heritage apartment, with very few expeditions into the outside world. Due to this setup, I could not help but think it would work very well on a theater stage.

Ms. Avon is doing a tremendous job taking us back to the 1980s and paints the decade in beautiful, soft colors. This is not a story about screaming neons and too much hairspray, but rather the 1980s behind the cliches. It is a true homage to that timeframe.

James is young, perspectiveless, and jaded by his past. But when he falls in love, he falls hard. Lina is living in her own world, a little disconnected from reality, with a great passion for dancing and an equally heartbreaking backstory. Two characters seemingly made for another, connected by beautiful prose that wonderfully brings the struggles to the page.

I quickly fell in love with Lina, who was broken, yet remained a fighter at heart. Her view of the world felt old fashioned at times, which fits her character very well. She’s a dancer, a dreamer, a survivor, yet someone who still carries on—until you learn the devastating truth.

There are only a handful of characters, but all are beautifully crafted and have their own story to tell.

At times, the story feels quite claustrophobic, and I would assume this is exactly how James feels in his little world. The few selective locations help paying the small, narrow world James lives in, and how he may have difficulties breaking out from it.

This nostalgic, melodic, melancholic read sets the perfect mood for an early fall read, so get the hot chocolate ready, cuddle up in a cozy chair, and dive into the beautifully faded world.

Be prepared, however, for the twist at the end. A true Barbara Avon gem and my favorite novel by the author.

I had the pleasure of reading a complimentary copy of Postscript from author Barbara Avon, in exchange for my unbiased review.

My initial impression is of the book’s cover - a tasteful portrait of a crouched nude woman with her arms wrapped around bent knees, and face cast downward. Along with the penned cursive letter superimposed over her, It’s a striking image that tells a story all its own and perfectly sets the tone of the tale.

The love story centers around Lina, a dancer with a tragic history, and James, a lonely down-on-his-luck furniture mover, living in the same apartment building. James quickly becomes infatuated by Lina, who is quick to distance herself from his advances. When Lina suddenly disappears, James is driven by his love for her in order to seek the truth.

Plot elements aside, Ms. Avon’s ability to effectively build a scene is truly captivating - like watching an artist painting her masterpiece. The story, which alternates between 1985 and the early 20th century, reads a lot like a stage play. As a student of the theatre, I am acutely aware of the power of words and how they define each character’s actions and intentions. Barbara successfully accomplishes this with her clever use of both prose and poetry, peeling back her characters’ layers while exposing their tragic flaws and haunting past.

A relatively quick-read, Postscript is an emotional journey which concludes with a shocking plot-twist. It’s a beautifully-written novella, and I look forward to reading additional titles from Barbara Avon’s impressive body of work.

"Postscript" is the second book I've read by Barbara Avon and she's actually starting to convince me that I may like the romance genre (especially paranormal romance) a lot more than I ever thought I would. Main characters James and Lina are two people from abusive pasts that have left them both emotionally scarred and doubting their ability to ever find true happiness. Yet, through a beautifully balanced exchange of personal stories and secrets, the couple does discover the meaning of love. The ending to this story is quite bittersweet, and I won't give it away except to say that haunting hints are cleverly woven throughout the entire storyline. Brilliant! A highly recommended read for all fans of paranormal romance.

brilliantly writing skills

How can one resist reading such a perfect dialogue:
“They tell me that it's all worth it, though.”
“What is?”
“Love.”
“How did we get here?”
“You ran, and I chased you.”
“No. How did we get here?” she asked, pointing to his heart.
“You ran...and I chased you.”

I enjoyed reading the unique language and text used to describe the characters and their actions to thin details. The writer is highly talented in placing the right word or using metaphors within the sentence to precisely describe situation and emotions.

I just finished Postscript and found it to be a beautifully, haunting tale. The writer weaves clues along the path, some I picked up and other's I missed till the amazing ending tied it all together. I highly reccomend this book!

I read some of the one star reviews for this one. This book is set in the 80's. Characters should talk like they are from the 80's. If a book is set in the 1780's, characters should talk like they are from the 1780's. That makes sense doesn't it?

While it didn't hit me as hard as the last two of hers I read, this is still an enjoyable little book. The characters are what hurt it for me though. The lead comes on way too strong to be likable and the woman is fairly uninteresting until later in the book.
I enjoyed the book as a whole though and I do recommend it.

In 'Postscript', Barbara Avon paints an intriguing word picture of a budding romance between two lost souls, each with a need only the person he or she has recently met can fulfill. But is it as easy as that? The struggle they both encounter is the page-turning aspect of this novel. How they each find the answers that knock down the wall between them is worth the unusual twist.

I'm not one for a plate of romance without a nice portion of tragedy on the side. This book delivered me a romance that I actually savored because it suited my tastes in addition to being spiced with Barb Avon's signature paranormal style.

Barbara took me back to the 80s with this one. She put me in the blue jeans of the main character James. Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane. Man, this girl paints a picture and then frames you in the middle of it. I need to pick up more of her books.

A timely love story. Barbara Avon pens a most unusual romance. In Postscript Jameson falls for Lina. I read the entire story before I realized what the title truly meant. This is an unusual take on a romance and one I didn't see coming. I loved it very much.

Beautiful writing! Avon did a nice job of weaving lovely snippets of prose throughout this story, along with several haunting memories. The one at the top of the stairs with her husband was so heart wrenching, I re-read over and over to make sure I read it right!

The author is very talented, however this novel left me wanting more. At first I was confused by the main characters' relationship. I thought they had only seen one another here and there in the halls, yet James seemed beyond infuriated that she didn't accept his invitation to dinner. The first scene outside her door reminded me a bit of Beauty and the Beast and it didn't make sense to me that guarded, shy, and haunted Lina would suddenly disregard her fear of the aggressive James to seclude herself with him in his apartment moments afterward. The story moved very quickly and because of this, the reader was only given a shallow glimpse into who the character's actually were.

Overall the story was a bit incongruent and I didn't care for the language used, especially by the employee of the month librarian. I found it very jarring and it unfortunately took me out of the story.
