What happens when millions of people suddenly possess superpowers? Mathilda Brandt thought she’d protected her family and freed the world, instead she’s unleashed forces that threaten to destroy both. She rescued her Empowered mother from RAMPART, but now her mother wants Mat to choose sides– Empowered over normal humans. Her sister Ava is missing. Governments begin rounding up the newly Empowered, while other Empowered want to end the threat from normals once and for all. With her own power suddenly erratic, and her connection to Gaia in jeopardy, how can Mat save those she loves and prevent the world from destroying itself? Hero is the fifth and final book in Dale Ivan Smith’s The Empowered series .
I love writing fantasy novels, as well as reading, watching and gaming fantasy and science fiction of all kinds. I'm also a librarian for Oregon's largest public library system.
I was sad when the fourth book in this series (Rebel) appeared to be the last one. I loved Dale's imagination, skilfully weaving a thrilling tale of people with powers navigating their way through a world full of 'normals'. He created a dystopian Earth where those who had powers had a choice - register with the Hero Council or be hunted as a renegade. Obviously, nothing and no-one is as black and white as that and so the story introduced a cast of characters that were all kinds of shades of grey. Mat considers her power to be relatively useless, just a party trick in essence, but she learns how to use it and realises just how effectual it actually is as each book progresses, until the final showdown happens in Hero and Mat may just be the only hero able to save the day (and the Earth). Mat, her boyfriend Alex, and her best friend Keisha are great characters and worthy heroes. The villains are awful and sometimes unexpected. Old friends make an appearance to help Mat in her monumental task. The story is fast and furious, packing a lot of punch, and the whole book completed the overall story arc and is very successful in tying up everything to my satisfaction. Thanks, Dale, I loved the series and was so happy to have this unexpected treat to provide a fitting end to Mat's story. I'm looking forward to Book Two in the Agents of Sorcery series now.
I’m going to miss Mathilda (Mat),, her boyfriend Alex, and her best friend Keisha. I’m going to miss the powerful storytelling that’s been the hallmark of Dale Ivan Smith’s The Empowered series. As the saying goes, though, all good things must come to an end. This series was more that merely good. It was empowering (sorry, couldn’t resist that), wonderfully complex, wonderfully exciting, wonderfully told. Just all together, you know, wonderful. Luckily, the send off given in Empowered: Hero (Book 5), was just as wonderful as the series books leading up to it. This is great stuff, folks, and more than highly recommended.
I absolutely love this series and hate to see it end - however the Author did the series justice and gave it an epic ended. Action and suspense through out this last book and all of our questions are answered. Personally I hope the Author does a spin off and delves deeper into Keisha's story. I highly recommend this story to all urban fantasy, fantasy, paranormal fans. This author gives the reader characters with abilities you have never seen before. It is original and creative and I am sorry to see it end but am so glad that I was able to take the journey with the Empowered.
