Wildsam Field Hawai'i leads travelers into the most authentic experience of these American islands, working closely with an eclectic team of trusted locals. This field guide has it all. What I loved most were the interviews and the essays. I think the biggest takeaway is that I can be a visitor without being a tourist. I can appreciate the people, the earth, and the opportunity to learn about a new place without exploiting it.
I do wish there was more information on Hawaiian beliefs and maybe a folktale or two (other than what can be interpreted from the interviews/essays).
I appreciate Wildsam guides and the perspective they bring. I think I tend to prefer them on the scale of a city, not a state (or in this case, an archipelago). The vignettes within are great little snapshots, just craved more for each island, more in general.
As a traveler's guide the information in this book is wonderful. But the print is so tiny, so so very tiny, I am convinced the publishers hate everyone over 40. Probably won't pick up another Wildsam Field Guide unless it comes with a magnifying glass.
