THE STOWAWAY

These are chronicles of the Old West--of the native people who lived on the land for generations and the pioneers who came from all over the world in search of riches…the struggle to survive in a land without laws…the strange bedfellows that resulted from the clash of cultures…and the common language of the heart that spoke of a love more precious than gold.

Blurb :

A notorious Scottish rake becomes an unwitting stowaway on a ship bound for America, until a spirited young botanist restores his reputation, and he becomes the only one who can save her from a twisted fate.

Amateur botanist Charlotte de Ware couldn't be more excited about sailing with her orchid collection from Scotland to New York to visit kin for Christmas. When she stumbles upon a dashing stowaway on the ship, she refuses to let the captain throw him overboard. But she soon questions her charity when she learns that the stowaway surgeon is a notorious rake.

Travis Jameson never meant to go to America. But his controversial medical studies have made him a dangerous target, and his friends spirit him aboard a packet ship for his own safety. He finds adventure on the ship and love in the charming yet unattainable lass who comes to his aid. But when they reach their destination and must part ways, a terrible secret and a twist of fate reverses their fortunes, and it's up to the tarnished scoundrel to save the desperate young miss.

My review :

When an unintentional stowaway goes from despicable to hero of a the day, will it be enough to save the woman he came to care for ...

When I received a Bookbub notification for this upcoming release, just the series’ name did it for me.
I so adored the trilogy of California Legends, I could not pass this one, a prequel.
At first I was confused as the premises of the book were set in Scotland, then they embark for a long journey to America.
Charlotte is a clever and well taught miss thanks to indulging parents, yet she was quite naive about her brother’s misdeeds. And does not question why he sends her in America.
Travis was whisked away by his friends to save his hide, how he finds himself a stowaway with only his hands and hard work to pay for his passage.
This is how he meets the delightful and intriguing Charlotte, but his reputation as a profligate precedes him why they find themselves dancing around the other as trust is not easily given and won.
Yet during the weeks on their way to America, their relationship finds its own balance, it was sweet to see them grow on the other and read about Campbell’s mischiefs, Travis’ dog.
Up to them to decide what they want, if fate does not decide to tear them apart.
This fast read is sweet and entertaining, full of insights about medicine and botanical knowledge and how some diseases were seen alas from the narrowed minds of the men.

5 stars for this short tale telling the story of the grandparents of Native Gold’s heroine.

The Stowaway (California Legends Book 0) by Glynnis Campbell is an enchanting Regency Romance,  set from Scotland, aboard a ship bound for America. A novella and a quick read.
Follow,  notorious Scottish rake, Travis Jameson, who unwittingly becomes a stowaway on a ship bound for America. And Charlotte de Ware, an amateur botanist, also bound for America.
Well written and well crafted with charming and enjoyable characters.  The storyline will grab you from the start, as the characters are maneuvered around, by secrets,  deception, a brother's betrayal, romance, HEA, love, and a cute, lovable dog.
Readers will not be disappointed in THE STOWAWAY. The beginning of what promises to be an exciting series. A definite keeper! This story will definitely steal your heart. I couldn't pick it down, read it in one setting.  A sweet romantic adventure!
"I voluntarily received a complimentary copy, however,  these are my honest opinions. I was in no way required nor compensated to write a review."

Very enjoyable story about two people who find themselves aboard a ship to America. Although unhappy about their circumstances they make the best of it. A few twists and turns later, we have their HEA. Highly recommend.

This story has so much going on, Charlotte de Ware, was left in the care of her older brother George,
when her parents go to Oxford to visit her oldest brother. While they are away George does not feel any responsibility to do what he should, instead fills his days with gambling, women and drink.
Charlotte is only a year younger, and knows that he is losing to much and that her parents would not approve but what is she to do. When he tells her their parents are no coming home for Christmas and wants them to go to New York and spend it with a cousin she has never heard of . She doesn't care
as she has always wanted to go the Elgin Botonic Gardens and now she will have a chance.
She is happy and excited about the trip. When they board the ship, George takes his leave to talk to the captain while she goes to look around the ship. While watching the ship leave port she see's a small dog
running for the ship and jumps aboard almost not making it. The little guy runs off before she can reach him.
While looking for the dog, she ends up in the cargo hold, where the dog-Campbell is there barking at a sealed crate. As she tries to stop him the Captain comes to see what is going on just as the crate breaks open and a handsome young man jumps out with nothing on but his short clothes?!
The Captain wants to throw him over board for stealing onto his ship. As the stowaway Travis Jameson
tries to explain, cover his body and hold the dog Charlotte jumps in that he can stay in their cabin.
With her family's name, the Captain lets him stay.
Ah now the story gets really interesting as these two learn about each other find out lies, mistrust,
the mystery of what happen to George, and the unthinkable that will happen to Charlotte.
Will their be a happy ever after, or nothing but sadness for both.
You will need to read this lovely Christmas story to find out, it is a great start to the California Legends.
I received and ARC from the author and want to thank her.
I am voluntary giving my honest review of this book.

A delightful tale set on a packet ship bound for America in 1810. Imagine finding yourself uprooted from your home in Scotland on short notice, placed aboard a small ship traveling for weeks across the Atlantic Ocean and ending up in New York City under mysterious circumstances. Charlotte is bright, beautiful and a woman way ahead of her time. Her curiosity and love of botany make her a woman with depth and character. She’s the kind of woman we all wish we could be, especially under oppressive circumstances. Travis, another shipmate, finds himself aboard the same packet ship, also under mysterious circumstances. You will fall in love with Travis. He’s the perfect blend of rascal and gentleman. The two passengers and a furry little friend will capture your attention and make you want to read every last word in one sitting. It’s a quick read that blends historical accuracy with a classic HEA. It’s a great prequel to the fabulous California Legends series.

Loved this, but it was way too short - LOL. If you haven't read the other California Legends books, then I advise you to do so, as they are excellent.

Charlotte de Ware loved botany more than anything and was also very curious. When Charlotte’s brother, George tells Charlotte that they are leaving for America; Charlotte is worried but looks forward to the grand adventure anyway. Charlotte gets ready even taking her precious orchids with her too. When the day finally arrives for Charlotte to board the ship bound for the Americas Charlotte looks desperately for George who has mysteriously disappeared and does not appear to be on the boat but amazingly a little black terrier is on board. Charlotte follows the dog and discovers Travis Jamison a stowaway. Charlotte doesn’t trust Travis but an unsteady friendship forms between them. As Charlotte spends more and more time with Travis she can’t help but fall for him which he also loves her too. Both Charlotte and Travis both wonder when reaching America will they be able to sustain the relationship despite their differences?
What a delightful historical novella filled with a lot of action adventure, romance and just a wonderful tale! Yes, there isn’t much but what is there is enough that doesn’t leave one wanting, can stand alone and a book fully complete. The story moves gracefully and nicely while written quite masterfully. The setting is easily imagined along with characters that are developed and easily imagined. Charlotte is a heroine to top all heroines; she’s smart, feisty and spirited making her easily relatable. While Travis is a swoon-worthy hero that hides who he truly is but manages to intrigue and be enigmatic but very down to earth that he is easy to love. This is definitely a book well worth a read despite the short length!

This prequel novella to the California Legends tells the story of Charlotte de Ware, who is led to believe that she is traveling to the Americas in the company of her brother, George. The truth, which Charlotte doesn’t find out until much later, comes as a shock to this gently bred young daughter of nobility. Making the best of the situation, she accidentally encounters a stowaway and his faithful terrier, whom she takes pity on, when the captain threatens to throw them both overboard. The stowaway, surgeon Travis Jameson, is also aboard under false pretenses, though through no fault of his own. An unlikely friendship and more slowly develops between these two as they face the difficulties of an ocean passage and what awaits them in the New World. As always, Ms. Campbell writes lovely, descriptive prose which moves the plot along and keeps me reading long after I should have gone to sleep! I definitely recommend this glimpse at the origin story of the characters in the later California Legends series.

The Stowaway by Glynnis Campbell

Sweet story about Travis and Charlotte and of course Campbell. They all meet on a ship bound for New York. Charlotte rescued both Campbell (dog) and Travis by following Campbell to ensure he was safe in the hold and discovered he was laying by a large chest and he refused to leave. She at first believed it was a casket but it moved and she realized it held someone or something inside. Travis broke free startling her and drawing the attention of the first mate. He was very mad and wanted the Stowaway dealt with and then Charlotte stepped up and vouched for the stowaway. The first mate told her, “not the dog but the man”. lol She still vouched for him but he chose to work for his passage. They meet up a few times innocently until the ship is in a terrible storm. Then their relationship..... read to find out what happens next! It was so good I could barely put it down for the short time I did today while binge reading this book. Sweet love story!

This was a wonderful read! No angst, low drama, a steady pace that made me forget all that around me. I couldn't put this down it was just that good.
I may be the odd one one, but the scientific terminology was a perfect addition, just as if it were peppered with straight gaelic and its translations.
The way the mysteries for each character unfold and then the surprise ending (in which the baddie gets his comeuppance) is brilliant as well. And of course a perfect HEA.
I got a pout when I realized I was at the epilog LOL But there is so much more to read with this new series of Glynnis'

This book is a tale of a man and a woman to getting to know each other. He is wrongly thought to be a rake. There’s a villain in here. Our heroines brother. He sets are on board a ship and she thinks she’s traveling with him. But he’s already indentured her to an aunt in America. Our hero is the doctor who’s had to learn second handedly since he doesn’t have a lot of money. And the one that I’ll break your heart is a little dog Campbell. There are so many different twist interns in this wonderful book. It’s a must read

Man, I wish this book was longer! This was such a delight!

A young woman, a member of Scotland's gentry, is sent to America by her brother under false pretenses. She meets a young man who was sent in a box to America by his friends to keep him from having to duel a husband who's wife he was caught with. So both end up on this merchant ship and meet because his dog jumps onboard to be with him. A most unusual romance begins. Will they be able to continue after they reach land? I loved this one.

A novella written in the quintessential style that is uniquely Glynnis Campbell’s. Charlotte is a strong willed and curious young lady. This leads her on an unexpected adventure where she meets the stowaway surgeon Travis and his intrepid puppy Campbell. This becomes the start of the new Scottish generation in the United States and the start of this great new series. A delightful read that will inspire you to science and love.

A ship on the way from Scotland to America contains a lady who was abandoned on the ship by her brother; a surgeon stowed away in a chest by his friends; and the surgeon's terrier, who jumps on the ship as it is leaving the dock so he can be with his master. Really good story with very interesting twists. What happens when they get to New York was unexpected. I received an ARC of this prequel about the ancestors of the characters in the California Gold series.

This is a nice change from the usual story line that Ms Campbell writes. It is a little more modern and set on a boat. It is a sweet quick read, with a bit of mystery, adventure and of course romance. And when you throw in an adorable dog. You have all you want in a story. There is nothing in this book that you won’t enjoy. I received this as an ARC and was more than happy to do a review.

**Ugh so good but so SHORT!**

Yes, yes. I know it’s another novella. I know novellas are always short. But why is it that the great stories with perfect foundations always seem to be the ones that don’t get the fullest time to shine? Why, Glynnis, why?

I loved almost everything about this. The writing, the premise, the locations, the CHARACTERS! Both Charlotte and Travis were downright delectable. Both so wonderfully written, even in their flaws (which were perfect for growing them as characters). Charlotte’s judgy and Travis is a work-a-holic. Both need work, and both manage to get there. They mesh well, then butt heads, then grow and fall in love. Their interactions were so wonderful, limited as they were (thanks to this story’s length). It’s all so great.

But…sigh. I know it doesn’t seem fair to take away a 5th star simply because a novella was doing novella things, but ugh. I just feel like too MUCH story was chopped off just to satisfy the shorter length. It even lacks a sex scene. Not that I’m going into these books LOOKING for those scenes, but my point is that the crucial moments that sell romance were all rushed. You don’t witness it. The two share a passionate kiss, and then their relationship takes place only in the background. Much of the story is rushed through to arrive at the 3rd act and I feel like I was gypped.

Still, I definitely enjoyed myself and look forward to seeing how the rest of this series goes.

Charlotte is a well thought out character and she seems a little naïve when her brother, George decides to go take her to New York to visit an aunt, especially when she discovers George isn’t even on the ship.
Travis Jameson is a doctor and when he gets caught in a lady’s bedroom by her husband, he is caught and challenged to a duel. His friends decide he will be killed if he goes through with it, so they give him something to knock him out and stuff him in a trunk and put him on the ship. He is funny and exasperating at times.
The adventure of the sea voyage and the misunderstandings between the two of them make a wonderful account of the road to happily ever after.

I received and ARC from the author and I am voluntary giving my honest review of this book.

Just ok read. I didn't enjoy how everyone talked and judged Travis for being a rake when what he was really doing was trying to help these women! I especially didn't like or main FC believing and judging him by gossip she herself was eavesdropping to hear! I also didn't enjoy George and why he sent her to America was an unanswered question! I did like the puppy and Travis but he's about the only character I liked. Unusual storyline. 1.5 stars✌

Travis & Charlotte

Charlotte's brother should be boiled in oil. Brothers and sisters typically argue, fight, and play pranks on one another, but there's more often than not a real love between them. But Charlotte's brother is beyond the pale. Travis and Charlotte's reconnection is the stuff of legends, of good fictional romance that's enough to make a reader swoon with joy!
