Bloodline Academy #1

Bloodline Academy

Rate this book
A Nephilim, a demon and a mage walk into a psychiatric hospital. This isn't a joke. There's no punch line. My name is Alessia Hastings. Welcome to my personal hell.

My weekly visit to Nanna's psychiatric hospital ends with me in a celestial jail cell. Now an impossibly gorgeous Nephilim with a face I want to kiss, and an attitude I want to punch, tells me I'm not quite human.

Too bad they can't figure out exactly what I am. Only that my magic is dangerous. Which means I've earned a one way invitation to Bloodline Academy: A secret magical school that teaches the next generation of supernatural monsters how to go bump in the night.

You'd think the resident Fae mean girls, the shifters, and bloodthirsty vamps would be my biggest problem at the Academy. But it's the strange voices in my mind that truly scare me. Because Hastings women have always heard voices, and the ones in my head are telling me there's something worse out there hunting me.

Finishing this semester alive is going to be treacherous. Not making it through could mean the end of the world. No pressure, right?

Bloodline Academy is book 1 in the Bloodline Academy series. It is an Australian Young Adult Urban Fantasy series. Filled with pulse-pounding action, snarky dialogue and slow burn romance. Think Buffy meets Shadowspell Academy with a side order of Supernatural.

Okay, so I'm reading academy-like books that have paranormal elements and vibes because I live, laugh and love paranormal and academy books. Maybe it's because I didn't enjoy my time in middle and high school, but they definitely have something interesting that keeps me reading like there's no tomorrow.

This book (this series, better said) is truly a hidden gem. At first, I was hesitant because it was cliché and it took me a couple hours to engage and to finally give in, and to be honest, it was worth it. Holy shit, I don't regret any single second, minute and hour spent reading it.

I liked the plot, (yes, it has many flaws, lol), the characters (Brigid, when I catch you, Brigid) and the worldbuilding. At first it's confusing, but things get better and then I got to the part where everything went to the shit because I realised that book 1 it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I love Lex's sense of humor and how she never knows when to shut up. Kai is fine, I like him, I just hope he doesn't become a jerk (this will not age well, lol). The side characters are lovable, interesting and funny.

BASIL IS THE FUCKING MVP. GODS, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AHAHA

I'm hooked!

💌 ⊹ ۪ ࣪ ꒰ pre-read: this series looks promising and i'm here for the paranormal academy trope, lol, and also because it's interesting now, lmao

I really liked the world and was pretty much invested in the plot but I just can’t overlook the plot inconsistencies. There were just too many. Many terms were intermixed to the point where I was just confused. I wasn’t a big fan of the characters either. I honestly couldn’t stand the banter between the leads.

I might read the other books in the series if only because of the diversity and culture, but I don’t think it’ll be anytime soon.

This book hit different.

It was like if 'Zodiac Acadamy' (by CP & SV) and the 'Covenant' series (by JLA) had a baby.

It's one of those fantasies that you're kind of hesitant to start, and are quite skeptical about at first, but then unknowingly become obsessed and can't put it down.

This was a really strong introduction to the series. It was very fast-paced and to the point, and got me out of a HUGE slump. I was a bit worried because its a YA and I didn't think I would be in the mood for that, but aside from the beginning of the book, and a couple of scenes- it just flowed really well?

It was such a binge-worthy book. I read it in pretty much one sitting and genuinely didn't want to put it down. The banter between Kai and Lex was so fun to read about, and I'm so excited to see their relationship develop.

-=-

My favorite part was Lex calling Kai a chicken because of his wings lmao 💀. (she was such a badass)

And my least favorite thing was the fact that Kai was blond (it's ok though the green eyes make up for it).

-=-

I'm not too sure what to make of the ending of the book, and am honestly still kind of confused with some plot points BUT I genuinely have really high hopes for this series.

Onto the next one 🫡.

Action-packed fun
Most of the characters including Lex were snarky, sarcastic and thoroughly enjoyable. The premise of the Academy and how the characters dealt with their life there was completely natural and caught on with me. Enjoyed it.

(3.5 to 4 stars) - an entertaining story if you're willing to let some things go

Let me first state up front that I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It has a fair amount of flaws, but nothing that I couldn't overlook.

It was fast paced, action packed, & often amusing. The characters were fun &/or sympathetic - though, as is common with academy books, both paranormal & normal, there's a good deal of stereotyping, too.

I'm not sure if Lex was actually supposed to be a bada** or just posing, but more often than not, she comes off as mouthy & insecure - however, intentional or not, that's compatible with the psychology one would expect for her background so it largely worked.

There were a higher than average number of vocabulary errors - a decent editor would be ideal but even a volunteer beta reader with honors English background would help.

It's an interesting take on the paranormal world with some interestingly unique features. However, don't expect theological accuracy - for example, guardian angels are also seraphim here. Add in the Nephilim as a sort of junior guardian angel squad & it's a mish-mash of truth & fiction & family trees that was a tad confusing at times.

Honestly, those didn't esp put me off, but my biggest problem with the story was trying to understand why Kai likes Lex. Just because she expelled a demon & then proceeds to insult, ignore or argue with everything he says? There's no real support or sign for the reader to follow - we just have to accept that he does.

So, I stressed my enjoyment of the book at the beginning of this because that's a lot of criticism, which I know includes dealbreakers for some of you, and I wanted to emphasize that I found it far more entertaining than flawed. I'll be downloading Book 2 from here.

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

*Language: mid-level language using the most common swear words, mostly sh--, no f-bombs at least

*Religion: Takes God's Name in vain about a dozen times, sadly & unnecessarily, but at least not as curses

I enjoyed this so much! Lan Chan writes so well, which is an absolute gift in the paranormal romance genre. The plot was interesting and engaging, and the world building / magic system was pretty cool. The characters were well built and flashed out, and the romance isn't forced :)

would highly recommend, a bright spot in the cave of paranormal romance (I'm allowed to say it because I'm a goblin for this trash)

I'm updating my review after having read farther in the series. The review includes minor spoilers but I don't want to hide it because I feel this needs to be highlighted.

THIS SERIES PROMOTES AND TACITLY CONDONES CHILD ABUSE AND ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS

The protagonist is a minor. In the series she is repeatedly not told information which directly leads to her suffering harm, up to and including fatal wounds. The perpetrators of this behavior are either not punished or given a slap on the wrist by unsympathetic authorities who claim "their hands are tied." Similarly, there are incidents of bullying and assault where, again, the perpetrators are not punished at all and the protagonist is, in many cases, forced to continue working with them.

The central romance in this story features repeated gaslighting, emotional manipulation, sexual assault, and victim blaming. The protagonist's lover lies to her and withholds information that directly affects her well being, in several cases leading directly to her being physically harmed. Most disagreements she has are interrupted when he forces himself on her. It's a YA novel so there is no sex per se, but groping and kissing feature heavily, and often immediately after the protagonist has told him "no". He is never punished for this. All of this behavior is excused because of trauma in his past.

The protagonist's "friends" are complicit in all of this. Lies are supported or excused. When the protagonist objects too much, her behavior and mental state are called into question. "What did you do?" is the most common response when the protagonists brings up any objections.

There is no indication, based on the 4 books I have read and summaries I've seen of the rest, that this is a lead up to retribution or that people eventually get their comeuppance; all of the people perpetrating this behavior are "the good guys." The protagonist, as mentioned, eventually becomes okay with each incident after repeated incidents of emotional manipulation and guilt-tripping. There is no effort by anyone to call any of this behavior into question. In the end, the relationship is portrayed as something that should be fought for and celebrated, and the authorities are held up as the righteous side.

Wow 🤩

Like a lot of these academy based series, I went in with rather low expectations. That said, I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed this, and how I got completely sucked into this world. The characters are moody and sarcastic with distinct personalities. The plot seemed a bit generic, but the author expanded her story enough to completely pack those 450+ pages.

If you’re worried about letting younger readers check this out, then don’t worry. There’s minimal language (if any), and no sex scenes or reverse harem situation - which was my main worry. If you are triggered by blood and violence, then there is some so tread carefully 😉

I’m completely invested in finding out what happens, and will definitely be picking up the second book asap.

Finally, an Australian YA Fantasy in which the school is hidden in Australia.
Throughout the first half of this book, I was struggling to read it, I just wasn't interested and found the characters meh and at some points quite obnoxious. With the whole angel and demon stuff, I was curious to see if it would be exactly like The Shadowhunters Universe, it wasn't.
However, the friendship and relationship growth was so sudden, especially with Kai that I was shocked.
We'll see if the next book improves on this.

I have the biggest soft spot for academy based YA books and this book provided all I wanted and more. This book has a strong and fun protagonist, some petty high school drama, a really cool magical world structure, a super dramatic fast paced plot and some seriously great minor characters and relationships, not to mention the slow burn romance that I adored!

I instantly fell into Lex’s adventure and completely loved it. I seriously enjoyed the array of creatures because they all have such unique personalities and they all have personalities motivations and stories. The best friend character, Sophie the kitchen witch, is so likeable and the friendship develops in such a well written way that I felt like she was my best friend by the end of the book! All the relationships formed, especially the one with Kai, in brilliant and realistic ways.

There are the occasional minor typos, such as Sophie being called Sophia, but this might be because I have an ebook version so don’t let that put you off this brilliant story.

So good!

I feel like this series would’ve been fun if I had read this when I was 17.

It was entertaining but cliche…and the whole book I never got to know how Kai is derived from Malachi unless I skim read too quickly

Aaaa but that cliff hanger

Seraphim or demons, which will she choose?

Visiting her gran in the mental institution is just another day for Lex, what she didn't expect was a demon to come after her instead. The appearance of what appear to be angels and some quick circle drawing save Lex. But now she has been transported to a school for supernatural and she doesn't know the first thing about it.can Lex overcome all her obstacles including jealous witch and seraphim who think she is a demon and try to get her expelled. With little knowledge about her past Lex feels overwhelmed. She needs friends, but they are not all honest and true. Wills he ever be anything more than a thorn in the side of Kai, a seraphim who tries to teach her defence.
A must read for all lovers of the supernatural world.

In The Beginning...

Oh. My. Words!!

Talk about a great introduction to the writing of a new (to me) author! Bloodline Academy has a little bit - and then some - of everything to satisfy readers of all genres: action, danger, romance, tried-and-true friendship, education (that's for the teacher in me), supernatural vibes, etc.

The central character, Alessia - or Lex as she prefers to be called, is a girl who finds herself fending for herself on the "mean" streets of Melbourne, Australia after the only relative she has, her grandmother is committed to a psychiatric hospital. For 6 years Lex has braved the world on her own while keeping tabs on her Nanna hoping that something or someone will be able to break the mysterious and unidentified problem that holds her Nana's mind. One fateful day, Lex makes the mistake of touching Nanna, and that is the beginning of a whole new chapter in the life of a teenager with so many questions about herself but so few answers.

And so begins Lex's new education at Bloodline Academy. She learns not only about herself but also about a new and unfolding world she knew nothing about. Without going into detail, let's just say, there is some learning she does not go willingly into, fighting against those who wish to teach her, as well as those who don't believe she should be at the Academy. But the biggest roadblock for Lex might be found when she looks in the mirror everyday. She feels out of place amongst other students who have known of the magical world that all are perfecting their skills and understanding of but mainly because she doesn't know where she fits in. It is difficult at times, but I am sure, as with anything that is hard to go through, Lex will eventually come to a realization that she is exactly where she needs to be, learning side by side with those who, along with Lex, will come to value and honour her contribution to the school and the new world she has been thrust into.

I have never read any of Lan Chen's books but if they are all as entertaining as Bloodline Academy, it's going to be a very interesting journey through her world!

This is a very fun and exciting read! It does seem to be in the same vein as Vampire Academy, but definitely does not steal anything from it. Lan Chan has her very high stakes way of writing that you don't find in most YA novels. Very intense action.

I really enjoyed getting to know these characters. They are interesting and unique. Lex is so stark and forthright, I'm surprised she doesn't get smacked around for it. Since she is new to the Bloodline Academy school, she's obviously and outsider, but it doesn't end there. She never knew anything about magical beings before the story began and she's been a homeless teenager for a few years upon entering, too. Talk about a night and day difference between herself and the rest of the students!

And she absolutely moves to the beat of her own drum. She's not some shy wallflower who strives her hardest to fit in with all the other kids, or falls-head-over-heels in love with the school's equivalent of the Captain of the Football Team, Kai. No way. She's so realistically busy trying to keep up with the weird curriculum and the girl bullies to be worried about "precious boy" out there. She is constantly reminded of just how precious he is by her roommate, Sophie, who is also a very cool chick, if a bit more conventional.

So, while the romance in this novel is very light fare, there is plenty of romantic tension to keep you satisfied, provided you don't expect the characters to start dating by chapter 3. You'll have to read the book to find out by what chapter they do start dating, IF at all. ;) Expect this story to be more about a young woman trying to figure herself out at that age we all typical do, but with a magical and supernatural spin on it. Of course, boys are going to factor in a little because that does happens in real life, sometimes.

Book 1 is a fantastic start to a coming-of-age story with some fun unexpected twists I doubt anyone could see coming. Read it because it's a fun world to escape into. I'm interested to see where the story will be heading for Book 2....

** I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review** No spoilers!

I have been eagerly awaiting the release of more works from Lan Chan following her debut novel 'Poison' which was an outstanding read. Lan certainly didn't disappoint with this first novel in the Bloodline Academy series.

I blizted through this urban fantasy
which was jam packed with twists and turns, intriguing and well developed characters and an exciting plot at its heart. I kept telling myself, just one more chapter and now I can't wait for the next installment to see what she has in store for Alissa Hastings and the ever dreamy Kai Pendragon!

This book can certainly hold it's own in the young adult world. All manner of supernatural beings and minorities are represented at the Bloodline Academy which breathes so much life and dimension. I quickly became invested in the relationships, connections and backstory of each character. I mean Basil?? Tell me more!

Overall, Lan does a fantastic job of subtly building a world that you just wish was real. A true standout in this genre and one not to miss.

Absolutely terrific - two great heroines!

What a tremendous read. Even better than the first book. In this one we meet another FMC - Lex. She street smart (having had to care for herself after her Nanna was placed in an asylum). A visit ends with her meeting Kai, fighting a demon and getting into the Academy where she becomes roommates with Sophie (the FMC from book 1). Demons, trials, magic and Lucifer are all mixed into a read were she starts to learn, grow and possibly fall in love. Battle lines are drawn as she and her close companions fight, not only against their enemies but also the prejudice that the fellow students have against low magic users and the fact that both our heroine's have snagged the attentions of the unnamed kings on campus. Will they survive?
Terrific use of imagery, wonderful use of magic and action packed but with a pace that is easy to follow.

WOW,WOW,WOW...

It was even better than the first book, I can't believe it but it's true. I am so sorry that it's over already but now I can get started on the next book. I am so Amazed at this book and the characters in it. They are a bunch of Demon butt kicking kids, Sure they came out of the fights with a few cuts and bruises but in the end they earned their places at the Academy. I can hardly wait to find out what happens between Max and Sophie and Lex and Kai. I hope that Lucifer gets what he deserves and the Academy can do what it was meant to do and trains these kids to save the World from more invasions.
This series so far is better than I was hoping it would be and it would be a shame if any of you were to miss out on it. Do yourself a HUGE Favor and click on the but button. But don't forget to buy the preview book before this one or you will miss out on the start of all this exciting series. It's totally worth it, This series ROCKS !!!

Great angels and demons academy read!!!

I just wanted to read the first few pages to get a read of the tone of the book before I put it in my reading list and couldn't so I downloaded the whole book. Best decision I've made in the past couple days. I woke the other night at 3am with what felt like a baby spider on my face. Naturally I couldn't go back to sleep after that. After keep feeling phantom bugs, my mind kept returning to my pass couple horrible work days with negative people. Not only did I stop thinking I felt bugs, but more importantly it got my mind off my stress. I never went back to sleep watched to sun rise but I was ok with it with this book in my hand. This week, this book was my savior. I don't know what "Bloodline" this author is from, but THANK YOU!!!!!

This book was surprisingly better than I had expected. Given, I went in to it with low expectations since KU has dozens of Academy books, most of which are awful. This one stuck out as pretty okay. Enough that I am going to continue the series, at least. The editing was better than many KU books I've read. There were minimal typos and the characters were consistent in their personalities. The mythology surrounding dimensions was pretty interesting in its history, so there was that.
There were several small things that irritated me, like how certain information the character "just knew" or "suddenly remembered," but if you can get passed that, I'd say this is an okay book to read if you are looking for a KU Academy series.

Pleasantly surprised

This is the first book I’ve read by Lan Chan...and it was a complete joy to read! It was well edited, well planned, contained excellent world building and character growth. I also appreciated the story progression, I’ve never minded a long book and sometimes the shorter novels feel as though they’ve been cut off at the knees. Bloodline Academy did nothing of the sort and it gave the characters enough time to grow and for the reader to get better acquainted with each one.
I may have started this series with low expectations, but wow, this author has certainly raised the bar for the rest of this series. I can’t wait for the next one!

Loved it!

Action packed with a feisty heroin whose rough life has made her extremely tough. You want to feel sorry for her but you admire her strength instead.
Lex has fended for herself living homeless on the streets after her grandmother was taken away. Lex values the little she has and puts her life on the line repeatedly to save those around her even when she doesn't like them.
Lex befriends the outcasts and helps even though she knows very little about the academy she finds herself "enrolled" in.
What happens when she is betrayed by someone she let in? Will it cost her her life? How many will die because of the betrayal nobody saw coming?

how do i describe this book its a page Turner for sure but her description of black folk has got to go coarse hair....um have you felt black hair probably not . I didn't like that at all. try to be more PC please . saying black curly hair usually gives the reader a understanding that the character is black describing the hair as hard or coarse, ruff, steel wool is just racist!

A great read

This book is a very unique story and I love it. Lex is a great MC and she is learning how to be in a world where she feels like she doesn’t belong. The path she takes is an interesting one, where she is finding out who she is! I definitely recommend this book! Keep in mind - it is PG-PG13.

A very typical start to what I think is actually a great series: I'm writing this review to inform all that these keep on getting better, and book 1 is well worth it!

I've read a bunch of these academy types now and I love *all* the tropes. A sort of normalish girl is compelled to attend a school of magic, where chaos and romance inevitably ensue; if you're lucky, hilarity and heart-wrench come along too and you end up with something surprisingly deep and moving.

Book 1 of this series is not so special- a typical plot and setting. Style, spelling, grammer all need improvement. There are places where it seems like a sentence has been left out- it basically reads like the last draft before the final draft...and it's what has inspired me to think about setting up my own editing company (for real) (I would be fabulous! Get in touch if interested haha).

The character archetypes are well realised, and my beloved tropes play out in full. What this book has that does stand out is the absolute non-stop action. I've read plenty of stuff where the quote on the cover says "intense" or "fast-paced" and I've never found it to be true. This is the first book *in my life* where I can say the plot is intense and non-stop, things happen happen happen, whilst characterisation etc is NOT sacrificed. Conversations are zippy and work well, and plotting is tight. I do wish the author would make some different word choices but I've seen similar usage in other Australian fiction I've read and whilst I believe it to be incorrect usage of English, it doesn't appear unique to this work. (for example, cut out "snipe" and "grit" urghhhh or use them according to international standards pleeeaaase)

I picked this up as an indulgent guilty pleasure with no expectation of anything deep, so I was surprised by the solid execution of the plot, disappointed in the quality of the linguistics and style, but crucially, I felt it worth it to continue: book 2 and 3 get better, book 4 I absolutely adore, to the extent that I paused halfway through book 6 to restart book 1 just to build up my anticipation for book 4 again.

From book 2, the plot improves, leaving the well-worn tracks of this urban-fantasy: academy genre and surprised me with twists. Very slowly you can see the author improving stylisticly as well.

At some point I'll review the rest of the series :)
