A story for a new generation of Maximum Ride fans! 17-year-old Hawk is growing up hard and fast in post-apocalyptic New York City . . . until a perilous destiny forces her to take flight.

Where is Maximum Ride?

Ten years ago a girl with wings fought to save the world. But then she disappeared.

Now she's just a fading legend, remembered only in stories.

Hawk doesn't know her real name. She doesn't know who her family was, or where they went. The only thing she remembers is that she was told to wait on a specific street corner, at a specific time, until her parents came back for her.

She stays under the radar to survive...until a destiny that's perilously close to Maximum Ride's forces her to take flight. Someone is coming for her.

But it's not a rescue mission.

It's an execution. span

As a longtime fan of Maximum Ride...okay... scratch that.

I loved books 1-3. The 4th got a little weird. I tried 5 & 6 but it felt like the author of books 1-3 wasn't the same person who wrote books 5+.

Inconsistencies in the plot and characters. Things were picked up and thrown about without a care to continuity.

Long story short...I read the summary of the "last" Maximum Ride book and was so freaking mad that I refused to actually read anything past the 6th book.

And that brings us to today.

Hawk is a kinda-spin-off-kinda-not book set in the world of Maximum Ride.

I was tentatively hopeful going into this one - after all, a lot of the issues I had with the original series stemmed from the set of characters being...well...thrown around and beaten up.

Thank you to jimmy patterson books and James Patterson for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

No star rating will be offered for this unfinished book, out of a sense of courtesy for the authors and other reviewers.

Having enjoyed the Maximum Ride novels, I had hoped that this loose continuation of the series might be of interest t0 me as well. While things opened in a dystopian world and looked as though it may have some potential, but things flew off the rails quickly. There was little connection to the characters, the plot, or even the dialogue. I felt as though I completely missed the boat, as tends to happen with some Patterson novels. I don’t even think that it was the YA genre that caused issues, as I can usually muddle through things.

Having tried twice to begin and enjoy this, I will succumb at 26% and move along to something else. Life’s too short to get stuck with a bad book.

Are you kidding me? Is this joke?

My literal reaction at seeing the existence of this book was UGHH.

Why is this book necessary? Just let the goddamn series die James, Just let it be over. LET IT GO.

UGHHHHHHH. Now I'm going to have to read this book to see how it is *intense eye roll*

Those sure were words on a page.

Between the child drug addicts, the completely suspense-less and pointless fight scenes, and the bastardization of these poor characters even further, I literally fell asleep twice trying to get through these pages.

No one asked for a sequel series, especially one that would try and fail so epically as rehashing the tropes that made the original somewhat tolerable.

I'm not sure if anyone has informed the poor man, but James Patterson seems to be unaware that the gritty, run-down dystopia went out of trend a few years back.

Don't waste your time with this, unless you're someone like me who gets amusement watching this series burn further into the ground with each new release.

I work in a library and received an ARC of this book through Edelweiss. It was rolling along fine until the last section of the book.

Now, I happen to be part of the generation that grew up with Maximum Ride. Discovered the first three books in a school library, fell in love with the superpowers and humor and adventure, then watched as the series shambled on and on . . . and on . . . and on. Now it returns with Book Ten.

There were a few moments I enjoyed. The prose and humor are nothing special. It's mostly just violence, "gotcha!" cliffhangers, and the occasional “oh, hey, here’s a character we know.” Max and the Flock do feature in the book.

I expected Hawk’s friends to be a new Flock for another generation, but they ended up being more in the background. It's an odd sort of limbo - not quite a new series, but still disconnected from its predecessors. We get the basic answers of “What happened to Hawk,” but other questions are left to the imagination. Fifteen years after an extinction-level event, the world’s population is evidently thriving, with (nightmarish) infrastructure and a booming population of criminals and drug addicts.

Overall, the book gave me what I expected. It left me with numerous questions about the world and timeline. Hawk lacks the magic that the early books held for me, but I think I was at exactly the right age when I encountered those. And this book is not written for the young teen I was back then. The new installment is evidently for older readers, with violence and cursing right out the gate.

It’s not mind-numbing like Books 4-8. It mostly reminded me of its predecessor, Maximum Ride Forever. Both feel like they have a reason to exist, and like there was a genuine attempt at worldbuilding and storytelling. Unfortunately, those improvements can only exist because these books build from Nevermore, which had one of the worst book endings known to mankind. Although it feels like a flutter of life and someone actually thinking about what they’re writing, on a larger scale the series should really have ended at 3.

There was one storytelling choice near the end that was genuinely rage-inducing for me, and which dropped the book from two or three stars to one.

I expect we will see more from Hawk, sooner or later. What that will look like, I’m not sure. There is one thing I’m sure of, though: it’ll keep going as long as James Patterson can squeeze a few more dollars out of it.

*MINOR SPOILER IN PARA. 2*

I received an ARC of this book from my job at a library, and I will say I was a bit wary when I heard about it. Generation sequels are very, very hit or miss, and I was confused about how this would fit in with the details we got from Maximum Ride Forever. But I enjoyed this book so much. It’s fast-paced and action-packed like what I expect and love from a Maximum Ride book, and Hawk is one tough gal.

All the questions I had from reading the summary (how could Max and Fang have abandoned their daughter, how could she forget her name was Phoenix and forget her parents, what happened to the rest of the Flock, etc.) were answered (for the most part) in a satisfactory way. The Flock IS present in this book, so people who are potentially upset about that shouldn’t worry.

I say give this book a chance. None of the Maximum Ride books have ever been perfect, but this was fun and entertaining and suspenseful, so I have no regrets about the few hours I spent reading it.

Pre-Reading

We are getting another Maximum Ride book. I repeat, we are getting another Maximum Ride book. But none of the original flock apparently 😢

After Reading

I don’t exactly know what to say. I really liked it. But I don’t know how the ending made me feel. The ending felt rushed.

But I was really happy to see the flock but I wished Angel came in a little sooner because I was worried something happened to her. And I missed Total.

It was a good companion to the original series but I think we would’ve been fine without it.

And Fang was in it so it was amazing just because of him.

Thank you so much to Penguin Random House for sending me a copy of Hawk, in exchange for an honest review!

Hawk has been living on the streets for ten years. Every day she waits on a street corner, for half an hour, just as her parents told her to do, but they never come. She spends her time acquiring food and other necessities for her ‘kids’, a few children in a home, who have been experimented on. A Terrible dictator controls all of the city, and what he doesn’t take, the city’s crime bosses do. Ekeing out an existence seems to be all Hawk will ever be able to do, until circumstances bring her face to face with the people she has been looking for all her life.

I haven’t actually read the Maximum Ride books, but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of Hawk at all, so if you’re hesitating to read this one, being a spin-off, don’t be, it stands up on its own (Although I definitely do want to read the Maximum Ride books now!). I loved the characters, especially Clete and some of the members of the original flock. The different friendships and relationships really pulled the book together and had me feeling all the emotions. Hawk was a bad ass heroine and the whole book was fast paced and action packed. It wasn’t perfect, there were some aspects I found a bit simplistic and meh, such as the over exaggerated addiction of the Opes and the attitude of Hawk towards Clete at times (I loved the mental health rep he presented, but something just felt off about some of Hawk’s interactions with him). Although I didn’t have any of the back story, due to not reading the original books, I’m glad this book didn’t get too bogged down in trying to re-live the past. It wasn’t needed and I enjoyed being able to just get on with the story!

Was anyone asking for another Max Ride book?
No.
Was anyone expecting this one, a spin off, to be really good?
Nope.

Hawk is cheesy, a mess, loaded with nonsensical villains and explosions... and honestly, that's all it needed to be. When Max Ride began to dip in quality (I blame The Final Warning... yes, I'm still salty over that one), each new book was looked at with more and more disdain by fans.
This one isn't going to fix that damage, or convert anyone into being a fan, but if all you want is some creative birdkid swearing, explosions, cheesy one liners, and sometimes actual character development, Hawk has you covered.

So positives: the characters were interesting. My favourite was Clete and the other kids from the home. They just seemed the most interesting.

This started off with all the foundations of a great book. I found Hawk relatively likeable, through all her struggles she remained strong and despite everything, she had a good heart.

However, midway through she lost that and we went through a lot of teenage angst and self doubt and just negativity. I get it, we’ve all been there but it just seemed so off-character from what we’d already experienced.
Oh and then suddenly, she flipped back.

Likewise, I found the story slow and it wasn’t gripping like I’d hoped. The action didn’t start until midway through and then the ending was super abrupt. It left so many open questions.

I had really high hopes for this one but was left feeling quite disappointed.

Surprisingly I didn't hate this.....

This book was everything I loved about the first three books in the maximum Ride series. It was funny and action packed and just my babies.

Nudge, Gazzy, and Iggy have always been my favorite characters and they still are. I loved seeing them grown up and the people they have become. Nudge is the sweetest and Gazzy is just my baby.

This book made my laugh the humor was definitely a huge part in my enjoyment. Fang was very funny in this book and I loved reading the banter between him and Hawk.

If you want to know more about why I enjoyed it I made a reading vlog dedicated to reading it on my channel (Lily The BookNerd).

I can't believe this is the year 2020 and I just read a *new* Maximum Ride Book.

4 stars feels like a very generous rating... I do not think this is a 4 star book but my feelings are telling me to give this 4 stars and I will not ignore my feelings!!!

Honestly, I don't really know who to recommend this book to. You definitely do not need to have read Maximum Ride to read it, but then I'm not sure I would recommend this book to a new reader. Honestly I'm not even sure if I would recommend this to a Maximum Ride reader - I liked it because I'm so far past the deep end but there were some major things I was disappointed with and that made me sad so I can anticipate other Maximum Ride readers also feeling disappointed.

I will say for context, I spent the last two weeks rereading the Maximum Ride series. While I don't consider Hawk to be "Maximum Ride #10" I definitely could rank it somewhere in the middle of the series. Not as solid as the original trilogy, but definitely not as messy as some other unmentionables. I think having the other books so fresh in mind really helped bring Hawk into perspective. (That said, there is literally no knowledge of the other books to read this, I just think that some aspects of the series helped me appreciate what Hawk was trying to do.)

Some spoilery reflections:

I felt like JP and co. had two routes they could've taken with this book: 1) Hawk has a new flock and is a new generation of Maximum Ride; ultimately a spin-off but more potential for creative storylines?? (who am I kidding) or 2) Max and the flock still 10 years later maybe as an adult book with darker themes. Like usual, the cop-out route was taken which was doing both of these at the same time and not really succeeding with either of them.

Idk. I liked it. Idk if I liked liked it, or just liked seeing the flock grown up.

But please please please I am once again on my knees desperately pleading for this to be the. last. one. This had an actual ending! It could be a standalone! Please!! Leave Max alone!! She's been through ENOUGH!! We've all been through enough!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭

A heartfelt thank you to Penguin Books Australia/Penguin Teen Australia for having me on board the blog tour celebrating James Patterson’s forthcoming Hawk and for sending me an Uncorrected Proof Copy to read and review – all thoughts are my own.
Hawk introduces Maximum Ride to a new generation in this exciting, fast paced, action packed adventure by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet. Admittedly, I haven’t actually read any of the Maximum Ride novels before and was slightly concerned as to whether or not I’d be missing any key points in Max’s life, however, I definitely didn’t need to worry. Hawk works absolutely perfectly as an introduction novel to the world of Maximum Ride, this time leading it with a new generation, Max’s Daughter, Phoenix leading the story.
Hawk is an absolute thrill of a reading experience, I feel like it crosses many genres and was completely engrossing throughout. The setting of a post apocalyptic, post modern world (as we know it) America really had me wondering about the current (and future) state of the world, where violence erupts on the streets and people literally kill one another, where corrupt leaders control the State, their loud voices projecting through megaphone-like objects carrying their totalitarian and autocratic mindset.
Hawk is such an amazing lead character, I always love a sassy heroine, equipped with a total resolve and steely determination to survive. Hawk has always had to make her own way in the world, after a promise from her Parents (who she can’t really recall) promised that they’d come back for her many years ago, but never did. I couldn’t help but feel ishe once again finds herself disappointed at the fact that she keeps hoping that they’ll turn up after all these years. This and the fact that Hawk couldn’t remember anything about her Parents, but knowing that she’s connected to Maximum Ride (as the Sypnosis suggests), someone who Hawk has herself idolised for as long as she can remember! Hawk kept me turning the pages eagerly in equal anticipation for what would come next in the story in every aspect and I’m definitely intrigued to see where the series will go after the completely insane and edge-of-your-seat climatic reveals and moments throughout, not to mention that wickedly exciting ending!

I loved the series of MaximumRide books and have just realised that I never read the last one which I am remedying now.

Was very surprised that another book was starting off another series but was really pleased just worried incase it didn’t live up to the others. I needn’t of worried I loved it . It was fast paced and great characters. I do feel that you will get more from this book if you have read the others but could be read on it’s own.

This is a book that is written I would say for young adults but I’m 67 and enjoyed so I would think kids who like fantasy/sci fi would really enjoy. Highly recommended.

As I don't normally read books by James Patterson, I have to say this was one epic ride.  One that is action packed and keeps you hanging to the very end. It didn't sink in until recently that this was part of an old series but set much later yet I have been told you don't need to have tapped into the previous series to enjoy this one - and that's exactly right. I was able to read this book on its own and really enjoy the action and the story. Although this is post apocalyptic setting, I couldn't help but draw a parallel to the real world with corrupt governments that rule with an iron fist, violence in the streets and the like.  It really was a thrilling adventure and I enjoyed the characters and their fierce determination for survival as well as their witty - humorous dialogue. I think I'll explore more of James Patterson's work, this was really a great read - very fast paced, action packed - not a dull moment in sight. If you're looking for some fast paced action adventure set in a post apocalyptic world? This one is for you! With special thanks to Penguin Random House Australia for having me as part of the Hawk Blog Tour and for sending me a copy of this book.

Hawk by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet
It's the next generation of maximum ride literally. Hawk was left at a street corner and for the past 10 years shes been waiting there everyday for a half hour. Shes waiting for her parents who abandoned her. Today she says is the last time.
That's where things get interesting. I'm keeping a lot of details to myself partially because it's a brand new book and it's got characters that we know and love. It also introduces us to a whole new world of maximum ride.
Pros: short chapters, story line is great, foreshadowing on point. Its 400 pages so it's not too long. Honestly great book overall.
Cons: someone dies that's all.

I've read some good James Patterson books and even some great James Patterson co-written by others but unfortunately this wasn't one of them.

I've not read any of the Maximum Rider series but thought I'd like to give it a try. The description of the book said it was for a new generation of fans, so I thought its a good place to start. I also thought it would be a kids book, but the first sentence starts with bad language. I don't mind this in a book or anywhere, where its necessary, but I thought this was for kids so not a great start for me.

The book didn't get any better from there and I didn't enjoy it at all. It seemed very muddled and didn't introduce the characters well. It was very confusing as to where they were and what was going on.

Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was definitely not a typical Patterson read. It was set in the future, with Hawk as the main character, a young protective mom to several “different” children. She lives in a congested city, is strong, smart and has wings! The plot is fast, exciting, somewhat violent, and you never know what will happen next. Even if you’re not a sci-fi lover, like me, you will love this book.

I don't know if it's just me, but this book felt a lot darker than how I remember the Maximum Ride series (Not counting When the Wind Blows) to be.

I wasn't into it at first. Orphan kid wanting to meet their parents is kind of an annoying trope at this point. There's some attempt to subvert it once Hawk actually meets Max and Fang, but it kind of left me feeling confused about Hawk's character. In the beginning she wants to meet her parents, but once she meets them, she hates them? It's not a point against the story as I can buy that Hawk's feelings are complicated, but I wanted to make note of it.

That said, by the time Angel was re-introduced into the series, I found myself hooked. This is just more Maximum Ride! It's both a new story and a continuiation. I don't think I could have expected anything else from this story.

Hawk was an interesting story that follows the flock as they've been unwillingly broken up. Hawk is a young bird kid who grew up on the streets of a tough and corrupt city. After her parents left her on a street corner, Hawk was left to fend for herself.
I found that I was getting Maximum Ride vibes, which is completely understandable because they're part of the same series and family. Hawk was a fun and easy read, with a few twists, and some other predictable moments. Over all the story was interesting, the characters were relatable and mostly lovable.
I do feel like some of the story was rushed though, with some moments being hurried along where I thought there could be more detail.
