Emma St. James has just turned thirty, the age she lost her mother to cancer, and it’s brought back the feelings of grief, and fears she might be next. Finding out that her mother wanted to organize a 5K race to benefit a good cause but never got the chance gives Emma a way to honor her memory. Now she just needs to be fit into the busy calendar of their nature park. For that she needs the help of the one man who broke her heart prom night, Jack Hershey. Emma’s in luck though, because Jack needs a favor from her, too. He needs her to be his girlfriend for the Summer. Pretend, of course. Well, that’s what they tell themselves at first, and you know how the story goes…

Jack did let Emma down prom night, but not because he didn’t care or wasn’t interested. Jack has had his own struggle. One he has control of, but doesn’t like to advertize.

When I figured out Emma’s emotional turmoil was over being the same age as her mother when she died of cancer and was avoiding her medical checkup, I almost stopped reading. My mother died of cancer at the age of forty-two and because of that I’ve had to go in often; for many years I was terrified that I’d have the same fate. So, I was worried it’d be tough reading this, however the author did a wonderful job handling the subject, and while this was a plot point it was presented in a way that didn’t stress me out and didn’t overtake the story.

Emma’s feelings were so very relatable because I’ve felt exactly like her. I enjoyed how she came to terms with her situation and took control. Fear does nothing, knowledge and a plan of action is empowering and comforting. I just really connected to Emma on a lot of levels. Even got her reactions to her father’s remarriage!

Sunshine on Silver Lake was very much a happy romance, despite dealing with some heavier issues like cancer and alcoholism. I loved seeing Emma and Jack fall for each other instead of longing from afar like they had for years. Jack was such a sweetheart, patient, and kind. He really had no idea Emma still carried a torch for him and got a bit swoony over every chocolate kiss gifted (it’s his thing since Hershey’s his last name) and really who wouldn’t?

This is book five in the series, but it’s not necessary to read the previous books before diving in.

Small town contemporary romances always get me, and Annie Rains knows how to do it right! This book is a sweet novel full of romance and adorableness. It has two people pretending to be together, and suddenly a romance blooms! Emma and Jack two lovely characters with great chemistry, which makes this story even better.

There is also a fair amount of drama, such as cancer running in a family and parental and family issues. These are some of the subplots and don't really make the story too emotional.

Overall, Sunshine on Silver Lake is a great read for romance novels seeking something sweet and delightful. It's just so cozy and lovely! I highly recommend it.

Four out of five stars.

I’m not a fan of second chance romances because usually it’s some bogus misunderstanding that drove the couple apart and a little communication could have helped.

This is wasn’t as bad. While it was clear communication would have helped, Emma St. James and Jack Hershey both needed to grow and heal some wounds before they could fully give their hearts.
Emma and Jack cared for each other in high school but Jack didn’t show up to take her to the Senior Prom and that ended their relationship.

As adults, Emma working in her cafe and Jack as a park ranger, their paths cross again. They are different people now, Emma still grieving the loss of her mother to cancer and Jack is raising his nephew as his sister deals with her addiction issues. I liked this book because it reminds me of Kristan Higgins or Robyn Carr style story telling. It has small town, families, secrets and love. Jack and Emma were good together, I just wish she had asked what happened and I wish he had told her all those years ago.

Jack and Emma embark on a new friendship and the old feelings resurface. These two make peace with their past and find new strength in who they are now.

Sunshine on Silver Lake
is the newest novel in the Sweetwater Springs series by Annie Rains. Each book can be read and enjoy completely on their own but this is such a charming group of friends you end up wanting to read all their happily ever afters.

Emma and Jack have been friends since they were kids. He was there for her when her mom died from cancer and always there to lend a hand. After he stood her up at prom she never left herself imagine there being anything more to their friendship. Jack has always cared about Emma as a friend and more. He screwed up his chance when he let alcohol control his life but hasn't had a drink since. When helping out his sister somehow turns into Jack and Emma being in a fake relationship he realizes quickly he wishes it wasn't fake. Both Emma and Jack have heavy things to deal with in their personal lives , will they let each other be there for them when it really counts.

"None of Emma's other friends gave her heart flutters though. Just Jack."

Jack I instantly loved right from the moment he placed three chocolate kisses on the café counter. Even with his faults, his will and determination to be better for himself and those he loved was admirable. Emma was a sweetheart. My heart hurt for all she went through with her mother and her own fears for herself and her future. However, her holding the past against Jack on multiple occasions, while believable, was frustrating. As in the other books the supporting characters continue to a fun, caring, supportive group of friends. I love when you can feel a couples chemistry and the story is so entertaining that you do miss the sex scenes. The fade to black and jumping right to the after cuddles work perfectly for Jack and Emma's relationship.

"Whatever lie you need me to tell you, I will, because I don't want you to say goodbye. You are the best thing in my life."

As I am part of Forever Romance advance reader program. I get the honor of reading upcoming books from them. Whenever I see Annie Rains' name in the offering, I immediately request the title. I have become familiar enough with her books that I don't even need a blurb to check the box that says I Want It!

Well, Sunshine on Silver Lake is the fifth book in the Sweetwater Spring series. Other than the novellas, I have devoured this book from the very first one, Christmas on Mistletoe Lane. So I knew I was in for another delightful story.

There are several tropes in romance books. This book employs one of them - second chance romance. Here we have Emma St. James preparing for a 5K run. Through a bit of miscommunication, she has pretty much made it seem like her old flame, Jack Hershey, is her boyfriend. Will Jack go along with it? What about the fact that although high school was years in their past, the two still have a strong connection?

Meanwhile Jack has agreed to help his sister by caring for her teen son over the summer. In so doing readers get to see what actually split Emma and Jack up when they were teenagers. There are some very serious issues in this story that deal with more than one addiction and how addictions can forever alter lives.

Will Jack and Emma be able to find hope for their future? What about Jack, his nephew and his sister? That story right there is mega important and Annie Rains truly did it justice. Both Jack and Emma were very well-developed characters. Jack really had a lot of depth to him, and a very sweet nature. Emma and her past were heartbreaking. Of course, I just had to see her find joy and love in her life, even with the apparent conflicts. I really loved this story and hope that there is much more to come in this series. If not, I will pretty much read anything else Annie Rains has to offer.

Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.

This is the fifth book in the Sweetwater Springs Series. This also includes a bonus novella at the end! I have not read the first four books in the series, but I will be seeking them out! This is actually the first book by this author, but it definitely will not be my last!
We begin this book with Emma, the café owner in a bit of a brain fog. She tried not to think of today’s date, which she refers to as DOOMSDAY! A birthday, a big 3-0 birthday! Her childhood friend, Jack comes in to see her and instead of serenading her on her birthday, as he does every year, he talks her into going to dinner with him, but she tells him he has plans with her friends. He also places three Hershey kisses on the counter for her, as he could not fit thirty of them in his pocket. Jack was a ranger and as this was the end of June, this was his busy time. Recently, there had been an outbreak of squatters. It was against the law to camp overnight at Evergreen State Park and he was the one to reinforce this. He would normally give one warning and then issue a subsequent citation. Apparently, Jack stood Emma up on Prom night. Thirty is a big deal for Emma because that was when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her grandmother died of breast cancer BEFORE she was thirty and her mom at thirty. Jack comes by the shop the next morning at opening and brings her a shoebox that has been in the top of his mother’s closet as long as he can remember. She had said that they were things for Emma one day. The box was labeled JENNY’S THINGS, that was her mom! Jack heads to work and rescues a mother and young son from torrential downpour and then heads back to his office only to get a call from his sister asking a favor. Jack is asked to take his fifteen-year-old nephew, Sam for the rest of the summer. Uh, this is a bachelor who takes his nephew for a few weekends a year and is now asked to take him for an extended amount of time with little explanation, but he still says YES1 Sam is two hours away and Jack has to pick him up. That is a four-hour round trip! Amanda, Sam’s mom had been on some prescription drugs and is having withdrawal symptoms and is heading to a substance abuse facility. After Jack confesses this entire situation, Emma decides that she is going to come along on the road trip with Jack! Emma sleeps in Jack’s truck the entire way there and back. When she gets home, she discovers the box is still unopened where she left it. In the box is a list of things that Jenny wanted to do in her life. Some of these items were checked off and then there were some that were left off. Three to be exact were left; Start my own 5k, Save a life and Leave something wonderful behind when I die (50 years from now). She felt that she had to finish these items. We are then sent out on adventure of Sam’s summer with Jack and Emma trying to accomplish the items her mom sent out to do. This is a cute book with some underlying messages! I look forward to reading the previous books in this series!

I know I say this every single time I review one of the authors books but I’m saying it again, this is hands down my new favorite in the series! This is book five and while you could definitely read it as a standalone, I think you would be missing out if you started here. Every single book is just incredibly charming and by now the characters feel like friends and I love checking in with past couples in each new installment. I’m telling you, if small town romances are your thing don’t miss this series.

This book follows Emma and Jack and I’ve been dying to hear Emma’s story for some time now. It’s a second chance romance, but Emma and Jack were in high school when they briefly dated so seeing if they could make it work as adults was seriously adorable. I love a couple with some backstory and history and I adored both of them. They had great chemistry and their developing romance was both sweet and sexy. This one gave me all the feels and Emma is dealing with her mother’s death so there was definitely an emotional component alongside the romance. Another cozy and warm addition to the cutest series, definitely recommended by me!

As you know I do love Annie Rains. Her Sweetwater Springs series has been so good. I've really enjoyed the characters and the writing. Each time I get one of her books in my hand I just want to sit down and do nothing until it's finished.

Let's talk about Sunshine on Silver Lake. I really liked these two. They are so meant to be together but neither can man up and tell the other. Instead, they play this dance of one step in, two steps back. This happens for most of the book. Usually, that might annoy me but for some reason with them, it didn't. I think it's because of how the author set up the story.

They had a few things going against them that you learn about as you read the story but even with their few issues they are able to work through them in no time once they realized what they mean to each other.

I totally understand why Emma felt the way she did about her stepmom and was glad she was able to deal with it.

I was also glad that the author didn't gloss over a major plot point of the story. I don't want to mention too much and give it away so I'll leave it to you to read it and figure out what I'm talking about.

This is a wonderful story of love and family and all the issues you have with them. But since it's a romance you have a HEA with both the romance and family. I think you'll enjoy the Hershey parts. I know I did. I'm really looking forward to more by this author and hope to see Jack and Emma in them.

Who doesn't love a man who keeps Hershey Kisses in his pocket?

Emma has long been fighting her feelings for Jack Hershey, but these two have a hard time avoiding each other when they both live in the small town of Sweetwater Springs. Though fun circumstances, they continue to spend time together, and rekindle the old flames from high school.

This second chance romance is sweet, lovely, and has a huge focus on family. Both characters have some big struggles in their family dynamics, but they sure do their best to work through it in this novel. I continue to love each book in this series! Check it out!

‘Sunshine on Silver Lake‘ is the fifth title in the ‘Sweetwater Springs‘ series, and, as always, we are about to set off on a charming, emotional adventure back in one of my favorite fictional small towns.

For a brief time in their teen years, Jack and Emma had a high school romance that ended in heartache. Wrong timing for the most part since both Jack and Emma still have unresolved feelings for each other – not that they would admit to that to anyone but their own inner conversations with themselves. Right now the planets are going to align as each needs something from the other – and perhaps that togetherness for one amazing summer can rekindle what their teenage selves had no clue how to deal with. One long, hot summer – two people who never stopped caring about each other – and a second chance to get love right this time around… if they are willing to put it all on the line and take that risk.

It’s not easy to deal with strong emotional issues like alcoholism or a parent’s cancer diagnosis in romance, they aren’t usually subjects that slip easily into a dialogue. Yet, ‘Sunshine on Silver Lake‘ proves (to me) to be an exception to that opinion of mine. Life happens, ya know? There’s not a darned thing we’re going to be able to do to change that simple fact. So, yeah, bad things happen to good people all the time – and we deal, each in our own ways. Years ago, Jack messed up. And Emma isn’t forgetting that. But right now they each need something from the other, and that one small change will take hold to allow two people who really do work well as a couple to see themselves now – not as what was.

There is laughter and frustration, tears and anger, love, and forgiveness within this story. The journey to get to a happy ending for Emma and Jack takes time, but it’s well worth the trip. There were moments when I was frustrated with Emma for not looking after herself, given her mother’s fate – but then we all deal as we can when we can, and I had to allow Emma to handle the emotional aspects in her own way. Jack knows what he lost with that prom night decision. He’s certainly not the same kid, and being around Emma again is reminding him of what he lost… unless he can show Emma just how right they are together and find a delayed happy ever after for them both. The secondary characters bring this story to life with quirkiness, friendships, and simply being a voice of reason or a listening ear. No one, not even a book exists in a vacuum, so those other characters are the life of any book for me.

I enjoyed myself (as I always do with this author) back in the ‘Sweetwater Springs‘ world again. If you’re in the mood for a romance that gives a second chance to two very deserving people, a lively small town, and realistic dealings with issues that matter – then you’d feel right at home with ‘Sunshine on Silver Lake‘.

Emma is one of the core group of friends, natives of the small community of Silver Lake, as well as the owner of the café. She’s a people-pleaser with plenty of worries on her mind, the most recent being her upcoming 30th birthday which makes her the same age as her mother when she was diagnosed with and lost her battle with breast cancer. Adding to the struggle is Emma’s worry over a negative review for the café in the local online forum, and her need to ‘please everyone’ is making her crazy.

Jack, another local boy and the focus of Emma’s crushes for years is also the local Parks Ranger, and while he and Emma are still friends, the two are struggling with their wishes for more. Jack has his own issues with his history, and now with his sister entering rehab for her own problems, he’s taken in her fifteen year old son Sam, with a promise to his sister that he won’t share why Sam is moving for the summer.

With a history of alcoholism and addiction in Jack’s family, and Emma’s family history with breast cancer – the two have plenty of their own struggles to dealt with, and taking a risk and a chance to expand their relationship from friends to more, with all of the accompanying trust that is required in that situation will push them both to the edge.

This is a town and a place that makes you want to live there: with small town knowledge, gossip and the inevitable support of the residents, Jack and Emma’s own individual issues and the adorableness of their connection, as well as the ability to allow readers into the lives and worries of the characters makes this an un-put-downable story and feels very ‘classic Rains” with the heart, friendship, laughter and clever moments that make you think, smile and yearn for connections that span a place and a time where ‘home’ is always a welcome thought.

This is my first book by Annie Rains and I enjoyed it a lot. It's a super cute romance with a friends to lovers/second chance romance trope. I liked the instant attraction between Jack and Emma. Most importantly, the story highlights the importance of women's health and treatment for addiction.

Overall, cute beach read!

Annie Rains writes a captivating, second chance romance which features café owner Emma St. James and park ranger Jack Hershey. Sunshine on Silver Lake is my favorite book in the Sweetwater Spring series!! I adored the pairing of Emma and Jack! Their long- term friendship, the couple’s easy back and forth banter and the sparks of attraction that filled the air each time Jack gave Emma a Hershey’s Kiss drew me immediately into the novel.
The attraction between Jack and Emma—it is off the charts…and so very complicated. Jack broke Emma’s heart over ten years ago when he stood her up for her prom. Emma doesn’t know why Jack didn’t take her to prom. Even though she is attracted to him, Emma can’t let go of the hurt. They are strictly friends. Jack’s mom asks him to deliver a box to Emma. The box and its contents drew me into the story and set the stage for Emma’s journey.
Jack is my favorite Annie Rains hero. He made a huge mistake, learned from it and turned his life around. He is a kind man, who is devoted to his family and dedicated to his job. He understands that Emma is dreading her 30th birthday and wants to be there for her. There are a few complications; Emma’s father dislikes him, Jack’s nephew, Sam, is staying with him for the summer and Sam believes Emma and Jack are a couple.
Loved that the author dealt with the couple’s fears. Emma was afraid she was going to be diagnosed with breast cancer like her mom and grandmother. Jack did not want to be drawn into substance abuse like his sister and father. Jack’s decision to abstain from alcohol and Emma’s anxiety about her birthday and mammogram were perfectly written. I emphasized with Emma’s real fear and could relate to Jack’s choice. Both learned valuable lessons from their parents.
Emma organizes a 5k to honor her mother and to make a difference in people’s lives. Emma benefited the most from the run as she learned to confront her fears, to accept her mother’s death and to forgive Jack. The couple’s slow burn romance unfolds perfectly. Loved how Jack really wanted to be a better person for Emma and that he wanted more than friendship. Loved catching up with Brenna, Halona Granger and Luke and the other characters in the series. -
Sunshine on Silver Lake is filled with friends, family and love. Emma and Jack’s friends to lovers story will tug at your heart strings-it’s emotional, swoony and very romantic. Who can resist a man who carries Hershey’s kisses in his pocket?

Sunshine on Silver Lake was a cute story, and I can definitely see why readers like it. It’s got so many elements of a good romance story, including a small lovely town, a worthy cause, fun friendly, good-hearted characters and a solid friends to lovers trope.

Despite that, this story just wasn’t for me, and I think I’m finding that I’m just not a fan of most of these serial romance books. In these series, many of the decisions the characters make seem to be unrealistic and entirely avoidable if they would just communicate better, or not make assumptions. It only aggravates me when I see this in a story because it feels ridiculous and preventable.

This story was no different. Between Emma’s own fears and her hostility towards a step-relative, her father’s stubborn refusal to forgive a teenage mistake, Jake’s persistence in feeling unworthy for a long past issue, and a few other plot points, I found myself growing irritated and just wanting the story to end. These tropes made it difficult for me to see the sweet and positive elements within the story.

When I pick up a Sweetwater Springs book written by Annie Rains, I know I'm about to be immersed in a well-written story, with likable characters, set within a vibrant and supportive community, and laced with both humor and heart.

There are so many layers to Emma and Jack's story, all expertly interwoven into a modern tapestry of second chances, forgiveness, hope, acceptance, love, and happily ever afters. I really pulled for these two to find their happiness and they had more than a few significant, emotional, and realistic, obstacles to overcome in order to achieve it.

While Emma was upbeat, kind, a successful businesswoman, and a good friend, past events in her life and anxiety about future possibilities had her approaching life from a position of fear. And that kept her from opening her heart to a potential relationship with Jack. It was also keeping her from bridging the emotional gap within her family. I found her emotional journey to be realistic and very satisfying.

I love a friends-to-lovers romance. Jack and Emma have been friends most of their lives. In fact, it's a testament to the strength of that friendship that it was able to survive a betrayal in their teens. Jack has spent the past several years nurturing that friendship (the Hershey Kisses were so sweet) but he too has significant baggage to address. I appreciated the pace of the changes in his relationship with Emma and his unconditional support of her, regardless of the circumstances. I also enjoyed how Rains used Jack's relationship with his sister and nephew to bring about the realization of his own failure to be forthcoming with his close friends, including Emma, about his personal demons.

Well-formed secondary characters helped keep the story, and Jack and Emma's relationship, moving forward. They also added humor, emotional depth, and glimpses into potential main characters for future books in the series.

Sunshine on Silver Lake is the fifth book in this series but like earlier books, it stands well on its own. I thoroughly enjoyed this return visit to Sweetwater Springs and Emma and Jack's journey to love. I hope we see more of them in future books.

3.75 stars-SUNSHINE ON SILVER LAKE is the fifth instalment in Annie Rains’ contemporary, adult SWEETWATER SPRINGS romance series focusing on the people of Sweetwater Springs, North Caroline. This is café owner Emma St. James, and park ranger Jack Hershey’s story line. SUNSHINE ON SILVER LAKE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Emma and Jack) SUNSHINE ON SILVER LAKE follows the friends to lovers, second chance relationship between café owner Emma St. James, and park ranger Jack Hershey. Emma St James has struggled with her friendship and relationship with Jack Hershey since the night Jack ‘forgot’ to pick up Emma for their senior prom. Fast forward to present day wherein, Emma, the owner of the Sweetwater Café, makes a promise to herself to finish her late mother’s ‘bucket list’ of things to do starting with completing a 5K run in support of the Women’s Wellness Center.

Meanwhile, Jack Hershey, the local park ranger, finds himself looking after his fifteen year old nephew, for the summer, having left the impression that he and Emma were in a couple’s relationship. As Emma makes preparations for the upcoming fund raiser, Jack finds himself drawn to the woman whose heart he destroyed years before. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Jack and Emma, and the potential fall-out as Emma struggles with what is and what may never be.

The relationship between Emma and Jack is a second chance relationship; a high school sweethearts whose friendship was destroyed when our hero ‘forgot’ to pick up Emma for the prom but all is not as it appears to be when Jack finally reveals what happened and why . Battling between head and heart, Emma is quick to forgive for sins of the past but not so much her father, whose lack of respect for Jack Hershey is another matter. The $ex scenes are all implied.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Emma’s father Edward and his wife Angel; Jack’s sister Amanda, her son Sam, and newcomer Diana; as well as several previous story line characters including Halona, Brenna, co-worker Nina and fudge shop owner Dawanda.

SUNSHINE ON SILVER LAKE is a story of family, friendships, secrets and lies; of love, loss, revelations and acceptance. The premise is sweet with a little bit of drama; the romance is tender; the characters are charming but I struggled with the heroine’s need to hold a grudge against the man who has called to heart, as well as the woman with who her father has fallen in love.

Annie Rains has done it again! I have been enjoying her Sweetwater Springs books. This storyline did double duty as it was a friends to lovers story, but also a fake relationship story. I loved how Sam and Jack's sister were woven in. My favorite romance books are books that aren't just romance, and Annie Rains nails this every time!!

Emma St. James turns 30, the same age her mother was when she was diagnosed with cancer. At the same time, she inherits a bucket list that her mother made when she was going through cancer. There are a few things on her bucket list that she was not able to complete, and Emma wants to complete the list for her.

Jack Hershey temporarily inherits his nephew Sam as his sister goes through rehab. Sam is told that his mother is on a vacation with her boyfriend. A cover-up so Sam does not know the truth.

As both Jack and Emma struggle and enjoy these new things in their life, they end up working together and becoming closer. Honesty is something that they both believe in, but they are lying to each other, and everyone else with their fake relationship. So many issues tumble out of this story, but not in a heavy way. They are both very good people just living life like we all do, living and learning as they go.

I can't wait for the next installment of Sweetwater Springs Books!!

ARC received via Netgalley for an honest review

Heading back to Sweetwater Springs is like heading home. It has been one of my favourite series these past couple of years.

I have been looking forward to cafe owner Emma's story - though I do end up craving baked goodies as I read.

Whilst I like Sunshine on Silver Lake, it wasn't my favourite story in the series. I liked Jack and I liked Emma, I just didn't get drawn into their romance. I got irritated at Emma for about the first 35% of the story, then I warmed up to her. Jack was adorable right from the start, and I may have yelled at my reader to walk away, she's not worth it hahah.

I adore the town and it's people, and love seeing bits of the other characters we have already met and fallen in love with.

I am looking forward to more of Sweetwater Springs

Thank you to NetGalley, Forever Publishing and the author for providing me a free copy of this book (physical and e-ARC).

If you are looking for a great book to throw into your beach bag this summer, this is it!

Sunshine on Silver Lake follows Emma, a cafe owner who decides to host a 5K Run/Walk in her mother’s honour, and her best friend Jack, who is asked to look after his 15 year old nephew for the summer so his sister can seek treatment for addiction. Jack’s sister finds comfort in Jack and Emma being a couple, so they fake it, though it’s not really fake for either of them! I loved their trajectory of friends to lovers and thought the epilogue perfectly wrapped up their story. We also got a dual perspective, which is always wonderful in a romance novel.

However, just note that if you are looking for steam, you won’t find it here. This is a closed-door romance, so it’s perfect to passing onto your mom or even your grandmother when you’re done!

FYI; This book does deal with alcoholism and addiction, as well as the loss of a parent, so if those trigger you in any way, please proceed with caution.

Well this was absolutely adorable second chance romance. I love a good fake relationship, expecially when caring for kids are involved, and this one did not disappoint. It gave me al the warm and fuzzies. There is just something about seeing a man learn from his mistakes and put his all into turning something fake into something real. I am so happy I picked this one up and I would definitely recommend it! Thank you to Forever Pub for an early copy!

Sunshine on Silver Lake is a book that just makes me smile. I had all of the feelings while reading this book, but in the end, it is an awesome friends-to-lovers romance.

Emma St. James owns the Sweetwater Cafe and has decided to plan a 5K in her mother's memory. Knowing that she's going to need help to pull it off, she asks the one person in her life who she knows has some pull with getting her a spot on the activities calendar at the National Park, her friend Jack. The complicated thing is that while she and Jack have been friends for ages, the fact is she still has feelings for him even after he stood her up years before when he was to take her to her senior prom.

Jack Hershey is the Sweetwater Springs National Park ranger and he's doing his best to continue to keep the demons from his past right where they belong. When he receives a call from his sister and she asks him to take his teenage nephew for a few weeks in the summer as she battles her own demons, he's happy to help out, but when a misunderstanding leads to his sister thinking he's dating Emma, things get a little dicey.

Knowing that Jack has to keep up the facade that he and Emma are a couple, he makes a deal with her - pose as his girlfriend and he'll get her a date for the 5K. Simple, right?! Not so much! With the two best friends trying to fight what they really feel, will they make it through the summer in a faux relationship or will it turn real?

There was so much to love about this book. Emma and Jack as characters were great. They were both dealing with things that are very common in our society today and I really liked the way Rains handled those issues. The anxiety and the worry that comes along with anything to do with medical tests is agonizing and you could feel that in the words that were written. Anyone that battles any kind of addiction fights a daily battle and you could feel Jack doing that in this book. I also really liked the play between Jack and Emma's Dad. Jack had something to prove and while I didn't love how Mr. St. James baited Jack on one occasion, I knew what he was doing and it fit.

I devoured this book and it's one I'd highly suggest adding to your summer reading list!

Emma and Jack were childhood sweethearts that ended in heartbreak. They are now adults who both live in Sweetwater Springs and are now just friends..or is there more to it? Jack is trying to help out his sister, and it turns out he needs Emma's help to do that by pretending to date her for the summer. Follow their stories as the summer goes on and see what happens as they come to terms with the past and determine what they want for their futures. Sunshine on Silver Lake is a sweet summer story set in an idyllic town with supportive female friendships, cute city events and local shops, and of course family drama.

This story had a lot of potential but I didn't love the writing style and some of the events seemed too simplistic and cheesy for me to accept.

Thank you to #NetGalley for an ARC of #SunshineonSilverLake!

It’s no secret that I’m a big Annie Rains fan! Annie’s stories take place in Sweetwater Springs - a town that I would move to tomorrow if I could!

I’ve loved all of this series, but I dare say SUNSHINE is my new favorite! This story is a friends to lovers, fake relationship in a small town - can you hear me squealing?

Annie writes authentic and heartwarming contemporary romances. I just love her writing & each story feels like a trip home.

Fans of Virgin River, you’ve got to take a trip to Sweetwater Springs. Each book is easily read as a standalone, but get ready because you’ll want to devour the entire series!

I had been waiting for Emma's story! I love a good coffee shop and I love a friends to lovers story. I am so glad I got to read and review this book. Emma and Jack have a complicated friendship in their past and Silver Lake is their story of working through the issues they are hiding from and coming together as a couple. I thought Emma and her fears were so relatable as a woman and seeing Jack support her when they both found the courage to lean on each other was so heartwarming. We need more warm romances right now and if you are a fan of Hallmark Movies, warm hugs and happy endings, this book is a must read!

This was another great book by Annie Rains that just warms your heart and makes you smile. It is a mix of friends to lovers and second chance tropes. Emma and Jack had a chance to get more than friendship from their relationship when they were younger, but a wrench was thrown into the works and they were back to friends before anything could even develop. They were then friends for years until a small fib to Jack's sister threw them together as a couple. Will anything happen this time.
Lovely characters and a great plot made for a wonderful feel good romance that makes for a great summer read.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

Readers cannot help but be charmed by Annie Rains’ latest enchanting and delightful small town romance, Sunshine on Silver Lake.

Emma St James and Jack Hershey have been friends since practically the cradle. But that is all they have ever been to one another. In high school, Emma had thought that their friendship might develop into something deeper when Jack had asked her to be his date for prom, but when he stood her up at the eleventh hour, Emma had decided not to act upon her feelings for him. Although Emma and Jack are now adults, they are still the best of friends and the attraction that had blossomed between them as teenagers is stronger than ever, but the two of them maintain that they will never run the risk of jeopardizing their friendship by taking things further – even though they are still crazy about one another! Emma and Jack are keen to keep things strictly platonic between them, but fate seems to have other ideas in store for them…

Finding a box full of her late mother’s belongings, Emma finds a list of all the things her mom wanted to accomplish which sadly she was never able to fulfil. Realizing that she wants going to tick off all the items on her mom’s bucket list, Emma throws herself into organizing a 5K run – and it just so happens that Park Ranger Jack is the perfect man to help her with the job. But Jack needs a favor as well – his sister’s teenage son Sam is coming to stay with him for the summer and as he told Amanda that he is in a committed relationship, single Jack needs to find a pretend girlfriend – fast! And it just so happens that Emma is the perfect candidate for the job!

As Jack and Emma find themselves spending a lot of time together, their feelings for one another quickly intensify and before long there is certainly nothing pretend about their feelings for each other – or their red-hot kisses! As the summer heats up, so too does the sizzling chemistry between the two of them, but with so much history – not to mention past secrets and very present fears and insecurities – will Jack and Emma finally find the courage to admit the truth about their feelings for one another? Or will their inability to take a chance on love end up costing them the happiness that has eluded them so far?

Feel-good contemporary romance does not get any better than Annie Rains’ Sunshine on Silver Lake. An adorable, uplifting and addictive tale, Sunshine on Silver Lake is a friends to lovers romance that I absolutely loved. Emma and Jack are two fantastic characters it is impossible not to care about. They are kind-hearted, generous and giving people whom readers will fall in love with – especially as their banter sizzles, the chemistry between them is off the charts and their romance is poignant and heartfelt.

Annie Rains deftly and exquisitely blends humor, charm, warmth and heart in one irresistible summer romance readers will not be able to put down: Sunshine on Silver Lake.

3.5*
Emma has just turned thirty, the same age her mother was when she lost her fight with cancer. Her mom was an avid runner and wanted to host her own 5k, so Emma decides to do it in her honor. She needs to find a place to host it and the national park is the perfect place for it.

Her lifelong friend, Jack, is a park ranger and is willing to help her with this as long as she does one thing for him; pretend to be his girlfriend for the summer. Jack is watching his fifteen year old nephew for the summer for his sister who is dealing with addiction. His sister thought Jack and Emma were dating and it gave her hope for her future, so he wants to pretend for his sister's sake. Jack and Emma fake date but they both quickly realize they don’t want it to be fake.

This was a cute summer romance! Jack and Emma are perfect for each other and have both been through some hard times in their lives. Jack is such an amazing boyfriend (fake or not) and is always there for Emma and looking to help her in every way. Emma is independent but also wants someone to wake up with every day.

I enjoyed the story and watching their friendship become more. This is a tame romance with some kissing but everything else is behind closed doors. It was a quick read that made me want some coffee and walks in the park!

Thank you Forever and Grand Central Publishing for a gifted copy of this book.

When I picked up this book, I was excited to return to Sweetwater Springs and learn about a new couple in the town. Annie Rains never fails to delight, and I knew from the summary that this book would capture my heart immediately. The two characters, moving from friends to lovers, with a fake relationship thrown in the mix - it never fails to make me laugh and keep me engaged from start to finish. Although the cover lends itself towards the bright and cheerful, there was definitely a good deal of sadness in this book as well. We have topics like cancer and drug addiction that are quire prevalent, with alcoholism being a big focus given that our hero is a recovering alcoholic. I was drawn to the realism of it all, how people move through life battling their personal demons, and each person must find their own path towards survival and healing.

Jack Hershey has loved Emma St. James since they were teenagers, until he ruined it all on the night of her senior prom. Despite that dark spot in their history, they have remained friends, and he frequently reminds her of his affection through visits to her cafe and little gifts of Hershey's kisses to cheer her up. Emma's heart always skips a beat when Jack is near, but she can't trust him enough to give him her heart again. Besides, she has more things to worry about, like the fact that she is now 30, the same age her mother was when she passed away from breast cancer. Feeling like the end is near, Emma is avoiding her wellness checkup, terrified that she will find out she is going to die soon too. After discovering her mother's unfinished Life List, a bucket list of sorts, Emma decides she's going to finish it for her mother. First step - organize a 5k. And with Jack needing Emma to play fake girlfriend for the summer, to make his sister believe he's happy and settled, she makes a deal with him. She'll be his fake girlfriend if he'll help her with her 5k. Soon they're thrown together, and undeniable sparks begin to fly.

I felt deeply for Emma, especially as breast cancer has come up in my family, and I can only imagine how devastating it would be to lose a parent to the disease. She has so many unresolved issues that this book was really a huge journey for her, and while Jack was on it with her, he was mostly there for emotional support. He had largely overcome his own demons, being sober for over a decade, and his only unfinished business was finding his way back into Emma's good graces. Even though her mother died many years ago, she had never forgiven her father for marrying her mother's hospice nurse just two years after her death (and really, I can completely understand her feelings). Her inner childhood trauma came out several times in the story, but that allowed for so much character growth as she realized she needed to forgive her father and stepmother. She also needed to recognize the good she could do in her mother's honor, through not only completing the Life List but recognizing her own health is all part of it. She and Jack fell back in love completely unexpectedly, but it felt natural. She needed him, and he had needed her for a very long time.

The next couple awaits, and I can't wait to dive in! I always leave Annie Rains' books with a smile on my face.
