The corona-virus exists only because animal exploitation exists.

We as a species are responsible for every single last death this has and will inevitably cause.

Let this be our wake up call.

Let this be the reason the world goes vegan.

And this is a good book to help you do it!

Don’t let the size of this little book deceive you (or the horrible pun title deter you): it is packed with information that will explain (with facts) the reasons to adopt a vegan lifestyle, but also give you plenty of tips and information on how to do that as successfully and easily as possible.

I think that most people with even a passing interest in veganism don’t need to have it spelled out for them: even if one ignores the whole animal suffering angle, meat farming’s impact on the environment is well-documented, and on the list of things individuals can do to minimize their impact on climate change, switching to a plant-based diet is the top point. For those who need extra convincing, the first section of this book should do the trick; otherwise, Nelson is preaching to the converted. But her preaching is gentle, not aggressive, and not a guilt-trip, which I appreciate a lot. She states facts, she gives numbers, she recommends documentaries and ask of her readers that they at the very least think about it and bear witness to those realities – which is more than fair.

The following sections, “Starting Out” and “Vegan Life” are good informative sections on how to transition from omnivore to vegan, in broad strokes. I like the section where she answers the questions vegans get asked all the time, and her emphasis on being calm and rational when faced with someone who wants to argue belligerently about your lifestyle choices. Few things are more aggravating than someone getting in your face about food (form any side of that debate). She also points out several time that being an angry vegan isn't very compassionate, which is the whole point.

I got occasionally frustrated with the layout of the book: every once in a while, the editor or whomever, thought it would be clever to have a grey page with one of the most “hard-hitting” sentences of the ongoing section in all caps taking the whole page up. This sort of thing bugs me because I hardly think anyone picking up a book like this needs to be preached at: they wouldn’t be reading the book if they needed convincing!! You can calm down and just use the regular font; put it in bold in the text body if it matters that much to you.

While a few facts jumped at me, I’m not sure I learned anything new from this book, but that’s not because it isn’t informative, it’s simply because I have been gradually working on my diet and lifestyle to bring it towards the goal of cruelty-free for ages. For anyone starting out, this little book is a great launching pad, written in a friendly and conversational way.

I've been vegan for 1 year and 9 months and it's the best decision I ever made. This book was so comforting to read because I saw myself in it so much, both before and after going vegan. It's a book I want to offer to my friends and family. People that accept my veganism but don't really grasp the entirety of the "why". I also think it's a really easy, understanding, kind narrative that will make you question a lot of things. If you never gave any thought to veganism and the truth behind the curtains, this can be the place to start.

📚 Yes Ve-gan! A blueprint for vegan living

What a well researched book, is what I thought the moment I finished Yes Ve-gan, A blueprint for vegan living.

What I loved: Author and human and animal rights activist Seleste Nelson has clearly put some work into this, referencing academic articles with high credibility and presenting facts and well structured argumentation debunking certain myths that are still circling around the concept of veganism. She also mentions law and regulations that are behind the dairy and egg industry which paints a picture not often portrayed in the media. Being a vegan myself, I found the first couple fo pages a bit repetitive, but as I look back on it, I understand that this introduction is needed since it is meant to address vegans and non-vegans alike; so I feel that it was a plus for the book to be consumed by anyone with or with our prior knowledge on the subject. I particularly loved the structure of this book regarding its chapters which were further broken down into specific topics, so you knew exactly where to find what making it easy to skip or look back on things while reading. Last but not least, I really see how the author has been advocating about veganism to others as I have come across the same discussions she mentioned, the same reactions and the same attitudes. Without shaming nor basing her statements on pure emotion, the message is clear, thoroughly explained urging everyone to do what works best for every individual. Needless to say that I would be looking back on the annotations I made especially when participating in debates about veganism.

What I disliked: There is only one small thing that put me off which is why I give 4.5 stars and not 5, and that is solely based on the random quotes that are spread out throughout the book taking the space of one or two pages. Call me weird, but I would have preferred them to be placed in a more organised manner as it was often disrupting the main text. But that is just me being picky I guess.

Here are a few passages from the book that I thought important to mention. (I wish I had more space to include more)

‘Trying to justify harmful behaviour today by saying ‘But we’ve always done it!’ is the equivalent of sticking your finger up at human evolution.’
‘The reality is, it can never be a personal choice if there’s a victim involved.’
‘Always remember that veganism is not a pursuit for perfection.’

This copy was #gifted to me by the publisher Octopus Books and the review was made voluntarily.

Absolutely loved this. I'm not vegan - in fact far from it - but I've always wondered whether changing my diet so radically would be possible and this book really inspired me to give it a go. It's been so much easier and more enjoyable than I imagined and it feels great to be doing something that's not just good for my health, but for the planet and animals too. Informative, very funny at times too, and ultimately really thought provoking.

I’ve been a vegetarian for around 5-6 years and I knew becoming vegan was just a matter of time. After reading only the first chapter of this book, I decided I will leave all animal products off my plate. I guess I needed a small nudge and Selene Nelson managed to do it perfectly! I became a vegan! 🥳
Her style is modern and very accessible, which helped in reaching out to the reader. The book is up to date, so the facts and ideas presented easily resonated with me. The author successfully summarized the benefits of becoming a vegan in the three most important aspects: animals, the environment and health.
Thank you!

I've been a vegetarian for a year and a half now and I eat lots of vegan food but I haven't made the full conversion of my diet to a plant-based one yet, thinking I could never give up chocolate or cheese, but this book has really made me see that I do want to become a vegan in my life.

This book is written so honestly with a fair bit of emotive language, but it tries to be subjective with explaining the facts about animal agriculture and the meat, dairy and egg industries. It's very informative with lots of helpful tips on how to become vegan, as well as lots of info on nutrition and how to get certain vitamins and minerals.

It has really shown me that when I think about it, I'm not okay with exploiting animals for my own gain and I really so want to become a vegan. It's going to take me a while, but this book has definitely given me a push to start this journey sooner rather than later.

An absolutely brilliant read and a must for anyone, especially if you want to know more about veganism, whether you want to become a vegan or not.

An inspiring, informative and accessible read on why we should all consider moving towards a more plant-based diet!

For the past year I have cut down on my meat consumption, and completely removed red meat from my diet, specifically for all of the important reasons that are highlighted in this book – animal welfare; the environmental crisis that our planet is currently facing; and personal health. Now I see that I need to go a step further.

‘Yes Ve-gan!’ provides an eye-opening account of the devastating impact that the meat and dairy industries are continuing to have on farmed animals, on the environment, and on our health - and how now is the time to make a much needed change.

Vegansim is a continually growing movement, and after reading this book I felt freshly motivated and ready to take the next steps towards a more plant based diet, and am excited to explore the options!

Selene's passion shines through in her writing of this book. Really well structured, gives all the facts and covers off all the bases. Whether you're already a vegan or just someone wanting to make a change, this book is for you. As an existing vegan, I learnt so much which will really help me in some of those not so easy conversations with friends and family about this wonderful and ethical lifestyle choice. Easily one of the most informative books on veganism I've ever read. Loved it!

Fantastic read!

I have always been interested in the Vegan way of living but thought it may be too extreme, or too difficult to do. Yes Ve-Gan! showed me just how wrong i was - veganisim is actually easy, accessible and enjoyable.

A must read if you are doing veganuary, or simply just want to cut down on meat, dairy and fish.

This book was amazing. It's so comprehensive and details what exactly happens in animal farming, why we should be vegan, health information, and a lovely plan for going vegan with tips and meal plans. I had become vegan before reading this book, so I read it to learn more and reinforce my beliefs. It was really heartbreaking to read about the animals' experiences. Selene Nelson presents many great arguments and writes in a touching and eloquent style. I especially loved her question on page 99. I'd love to be able to share this book with my friends and family as it's such a simple but valuable read. I absolutely recommend reading it!
