Jake Golding is a kind hearted family man. Taking his son racing seems like a good idea until Max is scouted, and they find themselves catapulted into the prestigious British Championships.
Thrust into the adrenaline-fuelled world of motorsport, where wealth and corruption go hand in hand, marriages are made and shattered and sex is a weapon as well as a hobby for bored wives, Jake locks horns with Fat Frankie Finch, a notorious East End gangster whose son is vying for the title, determined to win.
Driven to the edge of bankruptcy and breakdown Jake is surrounded by cut-throat parents and team bosses who threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. Will Jake and his family be devoured? Or have they got what it takes to thrive and survive?
“Driven” by TM Thorne is a book that is engaging and spurs the reader to accelerate their reading pace. Centred around motorsports in the background of the prestigious British Championships, it has several twists and turns that involve corruption, adultery and the influence of power and money. However, this is balanced by celebrating honour, honesty, determination, devotion and rising up during times of adversity. The Gouldings are the epitaph of a humble and supportive family. They are thrown into the mix of diverse characters such as the Carvers, Aspinalls, Leechs, Norths and Lillingtons as a result of entering the realm of car racing that is driven by competition and demanding team bosses. The notorious Frankie Finch enhances the element of underlying danger and ruthlessness, and the story between him and Jake Goulding is surprising, memorable and well written. For this entire journey, the writing of TM Thorne resulted in me residing on the racetrack, and the integration of British slang added to the book’s overall flair. A 5 star read, and I would recommend reading Made: The Franke Finch Story before starting this book.
A thank you to TM Thorne for giving me an ARC, and this honest review is left voluntarily.
I was extremely nervous about reading this when I saw the vast amount of pages with lists of characters and who they were. But don't let it detour you! I'm awful if there s a lot of characters but I only took note of the main ones and that's all you need.
The story was good and realistic when you're into motorsport it's unreal how much cheating and spoiling does go on. And people think footballers are cheats! Great story and a happy ending all round.
An thrilling start to a complex and entertaining series. Motorsport at it’s basic level, full of rivalry driven parents and jealousies. A great mix of characters, secrets and much more. A story you start reading and can’t put down.
