That's My Sister

Rate this book
Having a younger, beautiful sister is hard enough. Having one who’s on the cover of magazines and is loved by all? Torture. For single mom Marie Stephens, all she wants is to survive her new business, provide for her children, and ignore the intense feelings she has for her married neighbor.

When her famous sister, Sadie, shows up after a five-year absence, Marie’s normal life ceases to exist. Add in their celebrity-obsessed mother, it’s no wonder they can’t get along.

The most important thing Sadie and Marie will learn? Accepting your sister can change your life.

Difficult family relationships are unfortunately more common that one would hope for. Add fame and a mother who idolizes her celebrity daughter to the mix and someone is sure to get hurt. Marie has been on the receiving end of her mother's barbs and criticism for as long as she can remember and when her sister unexpectedly arrives back home, it is like throwing fat into the fire. Marie's one solace is her daughters, who are the light of her life, but when her mother interferes, the festering past wounds erupt. With Jeffrey coming into their lives, he and his daughter round the small family off perfectly, but his silence on important matters almost ruins their relationship. I was ultimately pleased that a truce was eventually reached between Marie, her mother, and sister and that Jeffrey's life became more settled. I found this book rather confusing as the subject matter continually changed from one paragraph to the next, and I had to keep rereading passages to figure out what was going on. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.

This is one of the best books I have read in a while.....
I was going give the book a 3 star rating at first but the book deserves much more...
Roxanne Rhaman wrote the book in such a way that makes you feel so warm and cozy on the inside.
Also it felt so nice to read it after reading so many thrillers at a stretch.😅
Eagerly waiting for the 2nd book which comes out in November!

Author Roxanne Rhaman’s first novel, That’s My Sister, is a bit of a disappointment, not only is it predictable, but the characters lack depth and relatability. It’s kind of the typical sibling-rivalry tale of one sister that’s beautiful and talented and the other one who is just as gifted and maybe just as stunning but is bitter that her sister literally “stole the show.” Yup, that’s right. The younger sister, Sadie Stephens, is a famous singer and actress and the older sister, Marie, is a teacher who after her partner, Louis, and she is in a serious car accident resulting in his death and serious injuries for Marie, resigns from teaching to open up a used bookstore in Arizona where her mother resides.

Marie hasn’t seen her mother in years and has been living on the east coast with her two daughters and Louis, and after the accident has no place to go but to live with her estranged mother who she always felt loved her sister more than her, and, of course, she’s still cradling that bitterness like a baby. Marie and her mother don’t have a solid relationship and Marie didn’t with Louis either. Apparently, he wasn’t a very attentive father, and to top it off was cheating on Marie. So, there you go. Oh yeah, and he didn’t leave a cent to his daughters after the death because the life insurance policy had to be utilized to pay for medical bills.

When Marie finds herself in Arizona with a whole new life, guess who shows up? You guessed it— Sadie, but she’s changed. She’s no longer the self-absorbed, narcissistic, fame hoarder Marie has depicted her as in their childhood. Now Sadie is more family-focused and wants to make amends and get to know her nieces. Right away, I knew either Sadie is in town for two reasons: 1.) she’s dying or 2.) she’s pregnant. When her hot Hollywood boyfriend shows up I pretty much figured out why, so I was just anticipating when Sadie would drop the bomb. The book is a snoozer though. The plot doesn’t have a single twist or turn. Marie of course finds love with the single attractive dad across the street, and the relationship has a few hiccups, but nothing that I haven’t seen in a Hallmark movie. Also, love scenes are left up to the imagination and I don’t have the energy for that! Come on, Roxanne, use your words to build a story, describe characters’ appearances and love scenes— give it to me, I don’t want to come up with this stuff on my own, that’s why I bought the book, I want the author to entertain me!

It’s tough when your sister is Sadie Stephens, notoriously famous singer and actress. Marie was a bookstore owner that stored and sold her own books (she was an author struggling to make ends meet.) She was often juggling work and motherhood as well as harboring a secret crush on her married neighbor.

After the father’s death, Marie was staying at her mom’s with her 2 daughters. She never expected to find her sister and their doorstep.

“My sister walks in the door, and I turn into a little girl raging against the unfairness of her life.” (LOC 417)

Jealousy and resentment toward her famous, attention-hogging sister boils to the surface. It’s a battle between an emotionally empty shell and a self-absorbed celebrity.

In the midst, Marie realizes that her married neighbor, who has a daughter of his own, wasn’t married after all. Could this be her chance at a romance? Well, she was trying to anyway. If only her sister wasn’t back in the picture.

Story was a pretty good read overall. It had a lagging pace and it wasn’t as comical as I’d hoped, although Marie did have a refreshing wit and a down-to-earth stamina. Her hard-working ethic and independent streak make her a relatable character.

I fell in love

I don't do reviews. I admire people who do, and I depend on them tremendously. However this book deserves a review. The characters grabbed me immediately. The story is about family, forgiveness, falling in love....falling in new love and falling in love all over again with your family. It portrays real relationships between mothers and daughters, between sisters, between sisters and their partners. I fell in love with this family and tried to slow down my reading while hurrying to find out the ending. Truly satisfying.

What a refreshing change from the usual single-mom story plots! Usually, everything is so sweet it's fattening and of course, all problems are solved perfectly in the end! Not with Marie and Sadie! This book was written like it was "real life"!! Sisters often, and usually have, issues starting when they were younger and being "taken" into adult lives. Marie, the oldest, was kind of put on the "back burner" as a child in favor of Sadie - being a performer and eventually becoming a national super-star. Marie lived with a man she thought she loved, had 2 children and then the relationship started to "die" and then the accident that killed the boyfriend and caused Marie to have to go home and live with her mother due to lack of income and 2 children to take care of. Sadie made it in Hollywood and the two sisters never spoke for years. Now, Marie is starting a romance with the "single dad" neighbor next door including all the issues that involves and at the same time, Sadie comes home - trying to make amends with her sister, deal with her own boyfriend issues and a secret that is eventually revealed.

I had to force myself to put the book down last night. It was such a refreshing montra of every day life and its related problems and how -sometimes we can't make things right and just have to accept them "as is" and find a way to work with and/or around them. In real life, siblings often don't get alone and often siblings don't get along with their parents. This story had that and at first, you say "why do I want to read about problems I have in real life?". Well, because it is a good way to take your mind off your problems and see how others might handle them. Or maybe see, that it isn't always going to work out as you hope it will as opposed to everything always having a happy ending, without much work to get there! It was really enjoyable to read! Nice to know someone else has those problems and also nice to know that not everyone had tons of money to spend as needed, but how we get along the best we can with what we got.

I thought the author really wrote the book well. I would imagine most would say it is written sloppy, with many grammatical errors, etc. I would have to agree, it is. HOWEVER - do you talk and think your problems out with proper grammar and sentence structure? No, of course not. And that is all the author did - wrote the way we human beings think or speak. Slang words, improper usage of words, partial sentences included! This also made it enjoyable to read and feel the emotion of each character, whether it was to hope for them, agree with them, or wonder why they said that! Totally out of the norm - but totally fun and enjoyable to read.

4.5 rounded to 5 stars

Who hasn’t had a friend or family member who eclipses us in something—looks, talent, intelligence, or something else? And who of us hasn’t been jealous of that person, even when you love them, too? I’m an only child so I don’t have a sister to be irrationally angry with, but that hasn’t left me in the saintly position of never being jealous of a friend or colleague. That’s the position of Marie. She’s a hard worker who is also the mother of two wonderful girls. Unfortunately, a divorce has brought her back home to live with her mother until she gets back on her feet. Her mother has always put Marie’s sister first, and of course she would. Sadie was effervescent like their mother. Plus, she had beauty and a real talent for acting and singing. Consequently, Marie was kind of pushed aside. She had their father as her champion, until he died, and then she was left on her own. To make matters worse, any boy/man who found Marie appealing only felt that way until they met Sadie. Life was hard being Marie. Now, life wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible, either. Not only did she have her mom as a back-up with the girls—one of whom was a mini-Marie and the other had talent like Sadie—but there was a man living across the street that Marie was having inappropriate daydreams about. And he was single! Then disaster strikes—Sadie is coming home for a visit.

The only thing I didn’t care for in this book was that Marie’s pity party went on maybe a tad too long. I realize it takes a long time to get past years of pent up resentment, but she didn’t seem to give Sadie any quarter, even when she was trying hard to be nice. But I loved where the sisters ended up. The relationship entanglements between the girls and their mother—and between Marie’s girls and Marie—were described perfectly. Even though Marie was a little cranky at times, I really liked her and wanted her to find happiness and her own place in the sun. I would recommend this book, definitely.

I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest and fair review.

Marie is a widow now and owner of her bookstore. Marie has been trying to make ends meet each month, since the passing of her husband, Louis. She is on her own with her two little girls, Hazel and Jade.

Her youngest sister, Sadie who currently is having a hard time with all her fame and fortune in Hollywood. Sadie decides to come home suddenly. Marie's mother is thrilled to have Sadie back. She always favored Sadie over Marie growing up; which made Marie envious of her sister.
Marie hasn't spoken to her sister in five years. There's a lot of animosity within this family but the love is still there hidden. Marie's daughters bring out the best in their Mom and Aunt Sadie.
Her handsome neighbor, Jeffery who lives across the street is making sparks fly between them.

This author's writing is a delight. Engaging and compelling is her cast of characters, which makes for an entertaining story.

Really enjoyed this ! 💓💕💓💓💓

I'm a first time reader of Roxanne Rhaman and I have to say how much I enjoyed it! Marie and Sadie were sisters who had grown apart for many reasons. The largest was that Sadie was a well known singer and actress, and their Mom always concentrated on Sadie and out down Marie. After having two children, Marie was in a horrible accident, and neither didn't call or come. That was the end for Marie. A few years later, Marie decided to move to her Mom's house with her two daughters. Not long after, her celebrity sister Sadie also shows up, not knowing Marie was there, not saying how long she'll stay. Throw in Sadie's boyfriend Michael and Marie falling for the man across the street, Jeffrey, and his daughter, and don't forget their Mom, and you have a large cast of characters! But it works! I defiently recommend this book! Read for yourself the ups and downs they go through. You won't regret it! 💓💕💓💓💓

I thoroughly enjoyed this read of an older sister whose mother sees her as a lost cause when compared to her famous, beautiful, and talented, younger sister. There are strained relationships all around between mother and daughters, between sisters, and between love interests. The undertones of the mother - I'll criticize you until your better; the resentment that builds between two sisters competing for a parents love and attention; all come to a head in adulthood when the adult daughters move home to live with mom for a period of time. It is nice to see that they work toward a resolution and are able to be respectful of one another. I also appreciated the love interest that the lead character had with the neighbor. It's never easy to love a second time around and not have "baggage" keep popping it's head up. It's a fun and enjoyable read written in an easy-going and delightful style.

Single mother Marie across the country with her two daughters to move in with her critical mother. While trying to get her new bookstore off the ground, she daydreams about her sexy neighbor. When her superstar sister also moves in, it brings up a lot of unresolved feelings. I received a free copy of this ebook from eBook Discovery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I really like this book and the way this author wrote. This book is told first person from Marie's point of view. I especially love the dialogue between characters as well as Marie's thoughts and what she would like to say. This is an interesting and amusing read about dysfunctional families. This is the first book that I read by this author and I really enjoyed it. I will keep her in mind for future reads.

I totally enjoyed thus book. It's a tale of two sisters, one is famous and the other is not. Marie felt neglected by her mother who is always doting on her younger famous daughter as nice they were small, this led to resentment and bitterness in her heart. The sisters don't usually communicate, after loosing her husband she came back home with her two daughters ready to give her mother a second chance. Unfortunately, Sadie came back home too not long after that but she was all changed, but all the bitterness in Marie arose again, but good enough they were able to resolve their differences and reconcile. There are many dramas in this novel with their relationships and exes too. In all, it's an interesting read. 'I received this book from eBook discovery. I voluntarily review this book. Marie is a widow with two young daughters. She has been a widow for five years. She decides to move back home with her mother and open a book store. She has a famous younger sister, Sadie, who she has not seen or talked with in a long time. Their mother always doted over her as well. While at home, Sadie makes a surprise appearance. To say things are not going smooth is an understatement. No one knows how long she is staying or why~ Pop in with a handsome next-door neighbor with a daughter and Sadie’s man friend and you have a whole big mess and lots of confusion! This is a wholesome great read! It explores relationships within a family dynamic with many tropes. I just bought the second book in the series~ It is a fantastic read you do not want to miss out on!

Roxanne Rhaman is a new author to me and her book That's My Sister is the first book I have read and it was wonderful romance that offers a lot of small town charm, family, jealously, rivals, forgiveness and love. This is Jeffrey and Marie story they are both enjoyable characters along with all of side characters that are well written. Their attraction was strong and their chemistry generated lots of sparks. The storyline was engaging and fun but offers a solid amount of drama and emotional turmoil as this couple relationship evolves into more than they ever imagined.

I received a copy of this book and I'm giving my honest opinion.
Having read many books about siblings and love I was very pleasantly surprised by the newness I experienced while reading. The characters are real, they are fully developed, and they each have their issues with highs and lows. I found each of the sisters very relateable, Marie more so. Having three sisters myself I can say out relationships are not all sunshine and roses so these characters really struck a cord. As for the love story, it's sweet and clean. The overall story grabbed me and sucked me in by the third page. It was a quick read but definitely one I will be re-reading!

This was a lighthearted meandering story about life. Two sisters whose lives have taken very different paths reconnect at a time when changes are happening again. I enjoyed the real sisterly/family banter that popped up repeatedly. There were several situations involving different family members/characters that were equally intertwined in the plot. I was again reminded about the pressures and downfalls of fame and popularity. An ok read with an ending that I did not anticipate. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I like it very much!

It describe some taugh family relationships between mother and daughter, between sisters, between lovers.
Such complex relationships and circumstances, that made you feel that it’s almost your life! Minus the fame aspect of Sadie.... but such stage stealers you can encounter in almost every family, even that they are not famous!

I really liked the characters and the interlaying plots.
And I will love the story of younger generation - will Sadie and Marie’s story will repeat with Hazel and Jade?

Lots of Plots

From sisters, to parents, to lovers and other significant relationships this book had one for everyone. It even had nerve enough to be slow at times. I knew Jeffrey wasn’t divorced he thought he could just move on almost lost it all. You have to close one door before you open another one. I was proud of Vivian for realizing the error of her ways and helping Marie to not move in that direction. Sisters are your first best friend and it also let me know I miss mine. Both of them and we live in the same city.

I loved this story and found it to be a very entertaining read. The characters are wonderfully realistic and well developed. The storyline is well written and flows nicely, with sibling rivalry, envy, drama, emotions, and sweet romance. This story engaged my attention from the start and kept me interested throughout.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I am looking forward to reading more.

Great read!

This book was such a beautiful story. I enjoyed the dynamic between Marie and her sister Sadie. I know there was a point in my life, where I could relate to Marie’s thoughts and feelings regarding her sister.
This was a great book about second chances and love.
I wish there was an epilogue for it but never the less it was overall a great book. 5 stars happily

The relationship between sisters is often complex. She is the one you love, the one who is your greatest rival, the one you hate. Either way strong feelings are at play. It makes matters worse if your mother adds fuel to the fire. Even mmore so when one sister refuses to communicate her feelings. I have to admit, I struggled to like Marie sometimes. I am hoping for this outcome with my own sisters. Of course, none of mine are celebrities.

Family connections are never easy, especially when you move home with your kids, your sister is famous, your Mom is obsessed with her and a very cute guy lives across the street.

The author does a fantastic job taking you through some difficult, but loving relationships!

Felt like I was reading the perfect hallmark movie, full of laughter, tears and recognizable relationship moments.

Super fun first novel, definitely worth reading.

Very good book. The sisters were brought up with a Mother who preferred Sadie who became a star to Marie her sister. Both girls were good singers but Marie wasn't interested in becoming a celebrity. She married moved and had 2 kids. Her husband then dies and she moves back home even though her Mom and her do not get along so well. It is about the relationships of Mothers and daughters and also sisters.

Marie has avoided her for years, but she shows up at her mothers in need of a break from her career. This was a complex story about relationships- siblings, mother -daughter, and more. The author captured family dynamics beautifully and it was an engrossing story.

Roxanne Rhaman's first novel That's My Sister is a very easy listen/ read. A great story of sister's and family. Roxanne did an excellent job in That's my sister, hoping this is the first book in the series. Narrated by Jennifer Blom, she made it extremely easy to binge listen. A must read/listen for 2020.

Thats My Sister!

Marie and Sadie's relationship was interesting. I thought Marie felt jealous of Sadie more so of the attention she got from their mother leaving her feeling alone. Their mother was a piece of work. I didn't understand why she felt the need to separate them from their sisterly bond.

Fun Sibling Rivalry Story

Marie and Sadie both have their issues, and I love the way this book makes them face those problems, each other, and the different approaches they've taken to life.

Fun, quick read with plenty of realistic intergenerational drama and some good romance, too.

Excellent

Well written story about two sisters, one bookish and a nerd, the other a singer and movie star. Close when they were younger, but jealousy drew them apart when they were adults. They grow to love each other again as they get reacquainted and help each other deal with their relationships and life.Great read
