When a talking owl tells Kali she's more than just an average eighteen-year-old, her mind is convinced she's gone crazy. Once she finally accepts his words as truth, she spends an entire year conditioning her body for all that is to come on her next birthday. Except, when the day arrives, she realizes her little friend left a few things out...
Kali is the first descendant in decades to be born from two royal fae lines, but being special isn't always a good thing. Even though she's been training for the last year, Kali's ill-prepared to face the threats headed her way, and she'll need someone to show her how best to defend herself.
That's when Callen steps in, and once again, nothing is as it seems. Even though something about him draws her in, they butt heads at every opportunity. With Kali's future on the line, she does her best to concede to the changes in her new life, but being the hero Arvayta wants her to be isn't as easy it sounds.

Oh my wordy words this books has me all 1100%! The moment mum began reading it to me (coz at the time I was too sick to even read), I was hooked and wanted more of literally everything. I devoured this book! It was so incredibly captivating and BRUTAL. I couldn't help it I had to message Heather (sorry bout my crazy 😂, just remember you love me hehe), like to the point that if I didn't I would combust if I didn't share my thoughts and rant and rave like a looney, lucky Heather is used to me by now, all my weirdness and all coz let's face it...
Now, if you hadn't worked it out by now...my ranting to the author should be a huge give away in itself to READ the book!! Heather was a little worried about re-entering this world and I told her she shouldn't have a fear in the world because this book is AHH-mazing!! By the end of it your heart may feel like this. I know I did!
I for reaals had this weird liquid running out my eyes. Like what is this?! She flippin made me cry! I want to say why because WHY?! But it's annoying because I know why it had to be done...talk about giving yourself a death sentence....but I'll say no more...because my self-control is very, very low right now.
Please I beg you do yourself a favour and dive into this world. It is sooo incredible. I LOVED all the characters so much so I became their friends...the connection was just so strong and so real. They were also relatable which is a really important thing to have with characters...and that was 100% nailed for me.
If you do not read this book I will literally come and haunt you or something...because this is a book that deserves and neeeeedddss to be read!! It has so much soul and light...and there's definitely some sorcery at work, I don't care what anyone says. Somehow I managed to read half this book in like an hour and a half, whilst sick...and it was just devoured and I was so shocked when it said it was the end and I was like
Suppose I should talk a bit about the book aye?...Well, I really do have to say I loved the dedication in this book...didn't it just melt your heart a little? <3
Anywho, moving onto the book, let me start by saying there's this awesome owl named Stryx, he's stubborn, sarcastic and bossy and you're going to love him, anyway he came to Kali a year ago in her dreams...taking her to this secret realm that he magically toke her too and her taught her a little about who she was and that she came from a place called Arvayta...and that she carries some pretty rare powers that could quite possibly restore the balance caused by the Dark War and a looming prophecy that was given at the time of her conception. Her little owl friend is quite cryptic but she trusts him even though it seemed quite insane...she trusted and took a leap of faith that what he said was true...and so the year leading up to her nineteenth birthday she has prepared her mind and body as best she can for the transition that needs to take place.
And guys it seriously only gets better from here...the first day she goes across to Arvatya with her bestie Jordan (that chica I'm in love with, or should I call her Satan haha), and her mum and dad...and from there she meets this hella sexy dude, Ryland, and you gonna love him...although he is a complicated fellow with a tricky past so bear with him.
Ryland may be her soulmate but as she meets with him he is not exactly pleasant towards her...which Kali doesn't really understand...and since she feels something towards him she can't really process, his rejection and rudeness hurt, so at the same time she tries to ignore the feeling growing inside, to deny because our boy Ryland isn't ready, just yet. Some people gotto knock some sense into him first...to clear the past up...not saying more in regards to that lol. Even though I really want to haha.
But then we have the Dark Fae, Alaryk, and he's about ready to start a war to get Kali on his side...coz remember prophecy. So a lot of threatening of the different races is happening in the Otherworld...and I feel like hell is going to rain down on them all...if he doesn't get what he wants...and oh boy how he proves that.
So rushed into a new world and life Kali must learn to adjust to her new overwhelming powers and prepare to take down the man? erm I don't really want to call him that coz he evil dude lol anyways, to take him down as she is the only one close enough in power to face him (which is obvi why he wants her to make her evil coz...)
Lucky for us Kali is one strong chic and even though she doesn't at first see that she is beyond extraordinary...she definitely shows a fighting spirit that is determined to do right and not give in just because it is hard or impossible...and with her old and new friends the limit is beyond the sky.
"Something was broken within me, but I wouldn’t let it beat me. I’d take whatever broken pieces I could and use them to build something great, because that was what strong women did, and I refused to be weak."
I loved a lot about this story but I loved seeing the growth between every character and the relationships they shared. The bonds made in this book really touched me and I just never want this story to come to an end. Hopefully, fingers crossed, we can get more than two stories out of this series!
Be prepared to experience so many emotions during this story and prepare for a book hangover...I was telling Heather in my messages that she was evil and that this book hangover hit me hard...and that all I'd done was just lay there staring at my ceiling...okay, I'll admit that some that could have to do with the fact I've been really unwell but that's besides the point because regardless I don't think I would've done anything after reading this.
To be honest, I think I'd put this book up there with Raven Point Pack. All I can say guys is just make time to read this book okay?! Most of you are in lockdown so this should fill your time for a few hours or so depending on how fast you read. Enjoy.
And if you don't read this book OR enjoy...I may have to rethink our friendship coz you do know that's what book nerds do lol....
Ugh fine...I'll probably may forgive you eventually...even if you don't have good tastes...as I said before every book of Heather's I've read are incredible she got some magic mojo I'm sure...do you use a recipe or does it just happen? What? These
Them = Me lol
But until you read it no opinion allowed...I think that's fair enough.
Now missy chop chop on book two because
but...
Just non weirdly stalking you until my brain and heart is satisfied. C'mon you know you love me.
Anywho, rambling on...thank you my friend for yet another amazing read, that I loved. I can't wait until this book sees the world. Remember I'll be haunting all your readers and making sure they read 😉See I am helpful lol 😂
All I'm gonna say is that the lovely Heather brought forward the date and it now releases the 26th April. So be prepared to go and Preorder that baby.
Fantasy? yes. Royals? Yes. Fae? Yes. Dragons? Yes. Guardians? Dark evil fae that wants to dominate the world? Yup!! :D
Of Dreams and Sorcery tells the story of Kaliah, who discovers on her 19th birthday not only that she is a fae AND a princess, but also the strongest light fae descendant ever born. Her reality is completely altered as she returns to Arvayta to face an evil dark fae who will stop at nothing to have her at his side.
I enjoyed the book, it is a very short and fast read. It has elements of one of my favorite tropes ever, enemies to lovers, and it is has some sarcastic and funny moments which I adore. The only thing that lacked for me was the world-building, which I felt was sort-of sprung at us and it was hard to grasp. My favorite character was of course Ryland the guardian, tasked to protect Kaliah and her family. However the character that I am most curious and want to read more about is the Dark fae! He gives me some "The Darkling" feelings from the grishaverse which I absolutely love:
"What do you say, my love? Will you leave this world behind and be mine forever?"
I really love the idea of the animal bonds and the Meraki bond, which makes me very curious for how they will be developed in the sequel. The plot is focused on Kaliah's training and learning about her new abilities and this new world of hers, the action really starts at the second half of the book. The ending was a bit brutal and shocking, however now that I had the time to ponder more it makes complete sense. I recommend this novel if you are looking for a fast paced fantasy read with enemies to lovers trope and magical creatures!
Of Dreams and Sorcery introduces you to Kaliah, who just found out that she is a Fae princess. While trying to process all of this new information, she also has to face an evil dark Fae as well. It also probably doesn't help that he wants her at his side either. So, yeah, she has a dilemma.
I'm not going to lie, this book was okay. My favorite thing about it was how quick it went by. Other than that, I also got to meet Ryland who was probably my favorite person in this whole book. That being said, this book definitely starts off pretty slowly. It does, however, pick up around the halfway mark due to all the action finally happening.
After finishing, I'm a little intrigued to see what is going to happen next. Mostly because I just want to know more about the dark fae right now.

Of Dreams and Sorcery, by author Heather Renee, is actually the first installment in the author's Royal Fae Guardians. This book takes place 8 years after Of Swords and Dragons. Our new protagonist is Kaliah Atwater who is fast approaching her 19th birthday when she will transform from human into fae. Kali is also the first to be conceived from two royal families. She's also the first who has a chance of restoring balance lost in the Dark Wars.
Heather Renee you have done it again!! I absolutely love this book... Kali has known for about a year that things were not quite as they seemed, but after her birthday and reality sets in? She is not quite as sure as she should be. Things are even more complicated than she thought. Then we have Ryland.... not even sure what to say about my boy, except that he really needs smacked upside the head. I absolutely loved this book the first time it came out, and I love it even more this time.
It was a good read. I liked the character development to see Kali come into her own in spite of practically being throw into a world she wasn’t sure she was ready for. And her and Rylands “relationship” 😂 Alaryk is intriguing and can’t wait to see how things pan out in the next book
I really enjoyed this. I had read the original series this comes from but this is much better, a completely different approach than before. We just got a glimps into the possible relationship between Kali and Ryland and I can’t wait to see it develop further.
This book was so good K has been through so much especially once she got through the Falls . She gets to meet some really awesome new friends but also gets a lot of heartache. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Push every other fantasy tale aside and embrace this beautiful book!! It's every bit as wonderful as the Folk of the Air and it's reminiscent of Sarah J Maas but totally with Heather Renee's own style stamped upon it. The imagery is vast and so delicately written! These characters are captivating and ones that you'll want to keep reading about. With besties and bonded relationships playing a key role in this, you'll find both hilarious and heartwarming moments. These pages will fly by as you devour their words! There is a conflict between our heroine Kali and her would be suitor, and the past is threatening any future happiness they could share. Add in an attractive but deceitful villian and you've got quite the fairytale in the making. This is rich with world building! The history is so expertly woven that it absolutely makes a beautiful tapestry that the Fates weave. I did not want this to end because I knew that I was reading something that I would forever love! There is a major cliffhanger (and if you've read anything else by Ms. Renee you should be used to it 😘) that wiil leave you broken hearted. If you're like me, this will have you in tears!! ODAS is by far my favorite work from this truly ah-mazing authoress!! This gives readers a whole new presentation of her talents and will leave you wanting to rave about this endearing and memorable series!!!
This is a great read, I never had the pleasure of reading this before it was upgraded, but I wish I had such a great world and characters. I loved Ryland from the start, grouchiness and all! I can't wait to see whats in store for Kali in this new world. It looks to be a crazy ride and she will need, Ryland, Jordon and Oliver to save the world!!!
Let me start by saying this felt like a nostalgic read. It positively reminds me of those books I've read in the 2000s. I kinda missed the dynamic and writing from that time, which made this more enjoyable for me. Our heroine, Kali, was super cute and I did like most of her point of view, especially when she took no bs from Ryland, that was such a good dialogue. She was no burden, and my respect for her grew immensely. I also did like her internal fight between needing love to win/needing a man, and I liked how it got resolved. Now, the love interest Ryland, he reminded me so much of Rowan from ToG, mostly because of his past and the way he first acted with Kali. I wish there was more romance and more development for Ryland, I felt something was missing, and it was definitely rushed. I couldn't quite connect with their love story, although it was what pushed me through.
To be honest, my biggest critique is that there was so much world-building. I think about 70% of this book is the characters having a conversation to explain the world and the plot. Instead of having the plot written down, they would talk about it. This was a major let down for me, it felt so tiring to read endless explanations instead of having it shown to me. The same goes for the love relationship, it didn't feel developed or build-up, it just felt there. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the writing style, and I just felt I needed more plot.
So I am giving 3.5, it was an enjoyable read, but it had so much more potential.
This book is a fantasy jewel with great world building and story line, easy to read, action-packed, amazing MC and a cliffhanger hanger that will leave your heart broken 💔😭 Kali's world is turned upside down at her nineteenth birthday, and not even the training her bonded animal Stryx made her go through the previous year, prepared her for the challenge ahead... Add to the mix a reluctant soulmate and you have a fantastic story that will keep you on edge, turning pages as crazy and crying at that ending!!! 😲🤯... Get ready to leave your confinement and join Kali, Jordan, Ryland and Oliver's adventures, you won't regret it... I need the next book NOW, 💯 recommended!!! 😍❤️
Hmmm... not what I was expecting. I’m bummed because this could have been so much more. I wanted Ryland to be more alpha. I wanted Kali to be more kickass and snarky. I wanted more humor and levity. I wanted more training scenes with cool, cute, or funny outcomes. But... oh well...
This was a very interesting read! I really liked Kali, as a heroine. She was neither helpless nor irritatingly independent, like some female leads, which was very refreshing. I enjoyed the theme of bonds between people: family, friends, animals, romantic, etc. Kali is strong, independent, hard-working, and sassy, but also relies on her family and friends to help her. I thought the conflict with Ryland was interesting, especially when we got to see it from his perspective (only one chapter, though). I also really like the other side characters, even ones we see briefly. But Jordan was especially great. She's a good character to have around that just says what she thinks without apology.
The setting is interesting, though not very original. It's basically a place that isn't Earth (I'm not sure if it's a different realm or a completely different planet or what), but seems basically exactly like earth plus magic and fairy tale creatures. Like, I thought it was a little strange that they apparently had an Italian restaurant in this place? I thought that was kind of random. But overall, the setting was interesting, if not completely rich with fae culture and such. There were definitely elements of it, but it still mostly felt very human to me.
The plot was quick-paced, even though there wasn't very much action, which was mostly at the end. The story held my interest easily, because it felt like there was always progress being made.
I would recommend this book if you enjoy fae and other magical creatures (e.g. vampires, dragons, witches), fated soulmates, and coming-of-age-surprise-you're-a-princess-who-needs-to-fulfill-a-prophecy-and-save-our-world-from-darkness-stories.
Not quite 3 & 1/2 stars. While the story has potential for book 2 to be better, there was way too much world building & character development (at least for Kali & her best friend Jordan) in the first 2/3 of this book (& I usually complain about those things being lacking in a book!). In this book, it made it boring & slow. I appreciate wanting to develop the base of the story, but somehow there needs to be a bit more balance, to be able to add some more to that part of the book to keep a reader interested. I almost quit several times before the book actually got some activity to grab my attention. I liked Kali, as the FMC, for the most part. I absolutely hated Ryland, the MMC. The connection between Kali & him isn’t there, at all IMO, to feel the legitimacy of that soul mate thing they supposedly have. It felt very forced to me. Stryx the owl is unique, I’m not sure what his title was, bond something or other. There are moments that I’m not sure I like him as much as other times, but he’s helping Kali. I’ll pick up book 2, since the cliff-hanger ending had me curious of how this will proceed.
Ok. Let me start by saying I absolutley love Heather Renee's other books, so this is not easy for me. This particular book just did not do it for me. It was well written and the direction the storyline is headed in is great, but the first 90% of this book has zero action. It's pretty much all information and then about the last 10% you finally get some action and get to see some real emotion and development. I also can't stand Ryland and the way the soulmate thing is projected in this book. He didn't want the bond because of reasons and then he realizes the reasons are shit, and suddenly he's all in love and wants the soulmate bond. And the whole time Kali is getting whiplash. She's still expected to accept the bond after everything. Whatever. I would set that bond and Ryland on fire. I seriously hope Ryland gets his shit together and becomes more likeable because at this point I just want Kali to go to the dark side.
Kali's story is told by narrator Vanessa Moyen who embodies her characterization amazingly well. For most of her 18 years on earth, Kali thought that she was just a normal girl until she's introduced through her dreams to her bonded animal, a talking owl named Stryx who tells her that she's an honest to goodness real-life faerie princess of a world named Arvayta, also that she's going to die on her 19th birthday.
Once Kali returns to Arvayta with her parents, her best friend & guardian Jordan she meets her other half Ryland, who is her perfect match in every way. Kali is special not only because she is the first faerie princess in years but she is also destined to either be one of the most powerful Arvatayan's in history, but the question is will she embrace Rylan & the light, or will she let the dark fae Alaryk who is convinced that with her help he can rule the realms with darkness and power sway her from the light?
This is the kind of book you want to start when you have time to sit down and read because you will absolutely not want to put it down. I love the images that flood my mind from the author's descriptions. She has a unique style and I just get sucked in to every book she writes.
Kali is a wonderful character that I loved. Ryland, well he is a twit, but I'm thinking he will grow on me. The whole way Kali is spun into her new world and reality, just wow. Overall, I loved the book and I cannot wait until I can read more.
5/5 for me and bring me more!
Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
This book is actually a rewrite of her Falls trilogy so if you read those books the characters and some of the book will be familiar to you. If you never read them then you will still love Kali. Kali knows she and her family are from a different realm but she won't be able to see it until she turns 19. There is a prophecy about her and when she gets to the realm it gets put onto motion. Kali has a lot to learn about her magic and few challenges in her way. I love the rewrite on this book and the direction Heather went with it. She really has done Kali's story justice and I can't wait for the next part of her story!
Ok so the book in itself was not bad not at all. Maybe it’s my own fault and should stop reading this genre for a while. I think the premise of the book has been used too many times and each time I complain at the lack of originality.
We’ve all read about the fae girl that doesn’t know she’s fae and then one day she is being trained to save the world. Her soulmate who is also fae wants nothing to do with her. So this love angst that really has been written several times already. All in all one of the better books with this storyline, but at the end the originality is simply not there. Characters and world needs a little more development.
"I had a date with death and probably shouldn't be late for it."
I really loved this story. It's a unique portal tale full of magic, Fae, great laughs, enemies to lovers romance, and a pleasant twist on soul mates. I listened to the audio is she did a really good job!
Cahlia (Cali), the MC is a biscuits and gravy fan and i absolutely approve.
Cali calls her best friend "Satan" which is hilarious. "Not today Satan"
There's one chapter told from Ryland's view and I loved it! It's an important plot point that wouldn't have hit the same.
"You still have to fight for the love you desire"
"A storm was about to rage and I was going to destroy everything in my path"
“Of Dreams and Sorcery” by author Heather Renee is amazing. It will suck you in as you read about Kali, an Arvayta Princess that was raised as human on Earth until it was time for her to head back to Arvayta. With her best friend, Jordan and her bonded owl Stryx, Kali adjusts to her new home. She comes across many challenges, heartbreak, and a huge journey that she and her friends will have to face together. Heather Renee does a fabulous job building this magically world and developing her characters. The ending of this book will leave you wanting the next one.
I have understood that this is a re-write of an earlier series. I have not read the earlier series, so I can't say anything about how they are compared to each other.
I really liked this book. The characters are fun, the world is fascinating, and the writing is good. The only reason I give a 4 star instead of 5 is the fact that the book felt like a prequel. Nothing bad about that, but not what it's supposed to be. I will definitely buy book not two as I'm really curious about what will happen next :)
Loved this book! Kali has been dreaming about a different world for a year. She meets Stryk, a talking owl, whom has been part of her dream and let's her know she is actually from a world called Arvaytan. Kali is not only tossed into this strange new world but also discovers she is a princess of Arvaytan and has a dark fae, Alaryk, is trying to lurer her to the dark side, and Ryland is her Meraki. Her bestie Jordan is right by her side in this new world.Read the book and see the adventure. The cliff hanger leaves you needing the second book now.
Heather Renee did a masterful job with this story. This story is a bit confusing at first as if there was maybe a prequel but that feeling goes away before too long and the book ensnares your mind taking you on a journey with Kali. It made me want to cry because of all the feels. Kali finds out she’s not exactly human and that there is a prophecy she has to deal with. There was a lot of action and romance and I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving things away but if you like fantasy you will enjoy this book. I need the next book now!
This is a rewrite of the first series this author wrote and I must day how impressed I am with how she really has leveled up as both an author and a story teller. The storyline is great. Kali is a mostly relatable character and I really love the bond she has with Stryx. Jordan is still my favorite and I am very intrigued to see where she takes the rest of the story! I'm trying not to compare it to the old story because so much of it is new but I am really loving how the rewrite turned out. The pacing is better and I like Kali's strength of character.
The world building is really good and the plot isn't great but it's good. The pace of the book started out really slow and it took me at least 4 chapters to really get into it (normally it takes me less than that)
I liked the badass female lead, but I wasn't convinced by the male lead. He turned too quickly from hateful to loving and I think the female lead should have made him suffer a little more before moving on with the bond.
I will definitely continue reading the second book
