Keto-Green 16: The Fat-Burning Power of Ketogenic Eating + The Nourishing Strength of Alkaline Foods = Rapid Weight Loss and Hormone Balance

Rate this book
An innovative 16-day plan that combines the fat-burning benefits of a ketogenic diet with the brain-clearing and keto-flu protection of alkaline food, by the USA Today bestselling author of The Hormone Fix.

There is no question that keto eating is the biggest diet trend in years. And it really works--dieters often report super-fast weight loss. But they also complain about the rigidity of the diet, as well as the flu-like symptoms that often accompany this high-fat/low-carb way of life. The solution? Add alkaline foods to your plate--leafy greens, other vegetables, broths, healthy oils, nuts and seeds--for a lifestyle that's more sustainable and easier on your body. In other words: go Keto-Green!

A triple-board certified physician, Dr. Anna Cabeca developed this unique method through years of careful patient and test panel research. In Keto-Green 16, she explains the science behind her innovative plan: Pairing keto staples with foods that bring the body's pH to a more alkaline level (lots of greens!) is the best way to balance the hormones responsible for hijacking intentions and increased belly fat. An added bonus: a Keto-Green diet also sharpens thinking and boosts mood.

With 16 days of what-to-eat instruction, more than 50 delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack recipes (many shown in the mouth-wateringly beautiful four-color photo insert), information about the 16 best alkaline foods, a 16-hour intermittent fasting strategy, and 16-minute HIIT exercise routines, Keto-Green 16 will ensure that readers skip the flu and get on with rapid and amazing weight loss.

I read this book a couple of months ago and thought I'd reviewed it back then but I see that I haven't. I really wanted to like this book. A nutrition book that promises to help you lose weight and reverse illness in just 16 days? Awesome. And I liked the idea that it combined "green" foods like veggies with a keto diet instead of just recommending fatty animal products. It ended up not really being a good fit for me, though.

The premise of the diet is that you should combine a keto diet with an alkaline diet for best results, and this will fix hormone levels that are the cause of health problems (thyroid, insulin, estrogen and other hormones).

The 16 foods or food groups recommended are: fish, beef, chicken, dark leafy greens, raw sprouts, cabbage, cruciferous vegetables, garlic and other alliums, MCT oil or coconut oil, olive oil, nuts (Brazel, almond, hazelnut and pili), avocado, lemons and limes, fermented foods (sour kraut, kimchi and pickled ginger), bone broth, and 3 fruits (mango, pineapple and papaya). There are a few optional add-in foods like spices, vegetarian swaps for the meats, and eggs. You avoid dairy, sugar, other fruits and vegetables, cured meats, grains, juices and so on.

She also offers a vegan list of 16 foods to eat. These are mostly the same but use black soybeans, white beans, chickpeas and vegan aklaline broth.

In addition, you do 16 minutes of exercise a day, especially HIIT exercise, and practice intermittent fasting. You are required to test your ketones and urinary pH every morning and to start the day with an alkaline drink that you make or purchase from her website. She also recommends a lot of other powders and such that you can purchase from her website, plus a lot of supplements (vitamins, minerals and herbs). Not surprisingly, she offers combinations of these supplements for sale on her website too. She also recommends commonsense healthy practices like getting enough sleep, drinking enough water and meditating, among other positive self care practices.

After 16 days on her plan you can repeat the cycle if you want to lose more weight or move on to a modified diet with more foods allowed.

The second half of the book is recipes. These include vegan recipes and ones with animal products. Maddeningly, no nutritional information is provided (a huge gripe of mine for cookbooks but especially for health-related cookbooks). Many of the recipes call for her protein powders and supplements.

The end result for me is that I'd go bankrupt buying all the test strips and supplements she says you need and I'm not entirely convinced that 16 days of living this way will do what she promises. I will take some of the advice regarding lifestyle changes, healthy foods and exercise suggestions but won't be doing her 16 day program.

I read a digital ARC of this book for review.

This book was a disappointment. As someone who has been doing keto for almost 2 years, I was excited to see a book with healthy recipes and new ideas. This book is . . . not that. The first 70% is all about the keto diet, various reasons as to why it's healthy and the science behind it. That's great, but not what I wanted. It honestly seemed like too much information and I'm not sure who it would benefit. I feel like a newcomer to the diet would be overwhelmed by it and a veteran of the diet probably already knows most of it. She makes the diet way more complicated than it needs to be.

The recipes seem fine, but nothing new or innovative. I understand this is supposed to be a 16 day diet to power your body, but it's no different than I eat every day, except she promotes a meal replacement that she sells (no thanks.) She also includes some recipes that I honestly question the carb count of- mango (which I love but 1 mango has 50 carbs!) and beans? She also doesn't include any of the nutritional values for her recipes.

This book is a hard no for me. A few pages of recipes, way too much information, no nutritional info and an over-complicating of a simple diet isn't helpful.

Although I don't follow a keto diet, I am a big believer in the benefits of it on weight loss and overall health.

This book starts with a very thorough look at hormones and the impact they have on health. It includes 16 day plans for both vegans and meat eaters and is a great book for someone craving structure on what to eat and when.

There is a comprehensive section on supplements as well as focus on positive thinking. The pictures of the recipes are mouth watering, I just wish they were shown near the recipe versus being in their own section.

Overall a great book to kick off the keto lifestyle with recipes for keto lovers or just food lovers.

Thank you Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and NetGalley for this digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Very detailed information about hormones and how they might not be functioning and the impact that can have on dieting.

There is detailed information about the author's version of the keto diet but to me this was underwhelming and not true to Keto.

Don't get me wrong I have raved about other non-conforming Keto books before (I am not afraid to deviate or make my own way) but this one was too heavily reliant on dietary supplements and shakes for results and seems more of a twist on a liquid cleanse for part of the day which was not what I was looking for. Also Keto is not an alkaline diet and I don't necessarily agree with combining the two together. This book for me was kind of all over the place mixing liquid meal replacements, supplements and alkaline cleanses with a bland meal. If this twist sounds promising you may like this book. It seems to be a rapid weight loss short term 16 day diet. To me Keto is more of a lifestyle change but I can see that this may appeal to some who just want some quick results.

Also I must say I could have lived without reading what porn does to testosterone levels and other things to correct it... HARD PASS and I wasn't expecting that in a cookbook but to each there own.

All recipes are in the last 30 pages of 185. Mostly shakes, the recipes all have minimal ingredients and would be fairly fast to prepare.

I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

Dr. Cabeca has written a medical breakthrough that saved my life

I was diabetic, not sleeping, having horrible hot flashes, in constant pain and couldn't think. I had blood tests done before and after trying her method.

I tried her Keto Green 16 method for a period of 3 months. After consistently eating this way, I reversed my type 2 diabetes, hot flashes disappeared, my pain levels dramatically dropped, I went from sleeping 3 hours a night to 7 (monitored by my Fitbit) and my brain fog lifted. I lost 20lbs too!

My personal physician said, "whatever you are doing, that is the lifestyle for you!"

I have joy in my life once again and feel like I am myself once more. Highly recommend her books and her products!

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. First off this has been a lifesaver during our shelter in place orders. I have never cooked so many nights in a row until now. I loved learning about what my body needs nutrition wise to be fueled including tons of add in foods like almond milk and other nut milks. I went from hearing the word Keto as a buzz word to really understanding how this diet could help me in my weight management goals. The step by step planner over the first 16 days will be super helpful and I am most looking forward to the improved sleep. Thank you for this amazing tool!

Oh, puh-lease! What a gimmick! There is no science behind why she is espousing a 16-day diet, 16 key ingredient types, 16 lifestyle practices and 16 minutes of exercise. Is it a coincidence that these are all best practices or did the author just stick with "16 of everything" because it is catchy? I would say it's suspect. I also do not choose to pay for books that are, in essence, advertisements for the author's line of supplements and courses. DO NOT BUY. Wish I could give it zero stars.

If you are a woman over 50 chances are you have some inflammation in your body. While I don’t believe a “diet” is the way to go , I do believe in educating yourself on how to fuel your body with a healthy balance of carbohydrates, fat, and protein. I don’t use any of her products but the recipes are still very good.

Got the book for myself for Christmas and and started the 16 day detox the day after, on 12/26. I feel amazing and I’ve lost 10 pounds and it’s been 9 days. I have even cheated on New Years Eve.

The book is a lot of information to process especially the supplement section. I just did one step at a time. I haven’t gotten to the end about the workouts. You can tell she just wants to share all the knowledge she has gained to make people feel better. It’s a lot of info in a book also with recipes.

In comparison to the whole 30 cookbooks, Every single recipe I’ve tried in this book was totally delicious. And most were relatively simple if you had the ingredients. My kids have loved every single one. I add carb choices for them to supplement- but they love the fresh lime and spices she uses.

I hope she continues to expand her books... after the 16 day detox what is next? I love her recipes and I would love to eat other things than the 16 items in the list ;).

This is the answer women over 40 have been searching for! Read the book - do the program- you won’t be disappointed. Join the FB community and learn how to make your body work in a healthy rhythm.

This book supports you so well once you’ve made the decision to do the work to help your body naturally right itself. I also recommend The Hormone Fix by same author but I like Keto Green 16 better- it tells you exactly what to do for 16 days. Hormones are so tricky especially 50 year old hormones. Dr. Anna has a wealth of not only knowledge but personal experience with this subject.

The recipes- though a step up for me, are delicious and filling. My husband enjoyed everyone of them and loved most.

I have been living a keto lifestyle for a couple of years now, and it is pretty easy to do. This book explains the hows and whys that keto works as well as intermittent fasting. This is a 16 day plan (a little strict, in my opinion but perhaps necessary) to get you started on losing weight and getting your hormones in order. In my experience with ketogenic eating, the weight just disappeared and the fat melted off and I felt absolutely wonderful. I lost over 40 pounds in about 4 months and and now, 2 years later, I've only gained back 4 pounds. Keto really isn't a diet...it's a change of lifestyle.

In Keto-Green 16, Dr. Anna Cabeca presents her alkaline ketogenic diet and lifestyle plan for hormone balance and weight loss. The initial plan lasts only 16 days, although the author does recommend that you adopt her plan as a permanent lifestyle. The diet uses only 16 key ingredient types with a maximum of 40 grams of carbohydrate per day. The plan also recommends fasting for 16 hours per day, exercising for 16 minutes a day, and adding 16 positive lifestyle practices, such as meditation and journaling.

The first part of the book provides an explanation of how 13 hormones affect mood, energy, and weight control. I found this information very interesting, but if you just want to know what to eat, it may seem overwhelming.

The author then discusses how she developed her Keto-Green 16 protocol and provides some limited evidence regarding its safety and efficacy. I found this section disappointing, because many of the studies she cites involve very small numbers of patients, and it’s not clear how well the studies were designed, nor are the full results available. The author provides references in an appendix, but the references aren’t cited clearly in the text.

When the author described her diet plan, she includes a vegan version of the plan. She recommends many of her own protein powders and nutritional supplements, but she also provides alternatives if you don’t want to use her products. I appreciated her efforts to make the plan accessible to a wide audience. If you’re someone who eats to live rather than living to eat, you might do ok on this plan, but I get a lot of pleasure from my meals, and this plan looked like it would involve a lot of effort and would become boring quickly. I might be able to tough it out for 16 days if I were desperate to lose weight, but I can’t see adopting this as a lifestyle. And I’ve been attempting intermittent fasting for months and am still not able to fast for 16 hours a day.

So far, I have only tried one of the recipes provided. The Mango Coconut Sorbet is easy to prepare and a refreshing dessert for someone on a restricted diet. Some of the recipes looked very easy, and some would be more challenging, but they did seem clearly written.

The book seems to be aimed mostly at perimenopausal women, but the plan could work for any age or gender. One chapter is specifically for men. I wish the author had spent a little bit more time discussing possible contraindications, although she does provide warnings for certain people who shouldn’t try fasting.

If you’re curious about the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting, this is a good choice. The author’s keto diet might be difficult to implement, but it looks much healthier than many other versions of keto I’ve seen. I think this plan would be a challenge to implement unless you have a lot of free time and motivation, but if you follow the plan in its entirety, you are very likely to lose weight.

I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review.

You can tell by the title that the author may like doling out a ton of information in a jack of all trades keto diet book. The author is a doctor so the first couple of chapters sound like a medical diagnosis from menopause to immunodeficiency. I found it really eye opening since I’m just starting menopause and I think on a part this book is partially geared towards women who end up in this category given that the author is a gynecologist.

What did I like? I wouldn’t say this was a cookbook but more of a diet plan for menopausal women who have unwanted belly fat that is hard to get rid of. There is a ton of things needed however to follow this diet plan (that while it’s doable) looks to be expensive. Along with urine testing strips and smoothie blends that are sold from the doctors website. Most of the recipes for smoothies require the blend. The book has some yummy recipe’s but zero pictures. The diet also calls for supplements that can be found pretty much anywhere. There is also no nutrition or calorie information for the meals which if we are counting for macros ....(shrugs shoulders).

Would I buy or recommend? I still think this book has a wealth of information for menopausal women that is a beneficial read. Some of it may even be eye opening to you. I guess however much you want to invest in your health is up to you. There is a chapter for men reaching that overweight syndrome at 40+ too. There is also a chapter on what porn does to your sexual testosterone level.

Thoughts for the author? Congratulations on your release! Wealth of information. I’m going to try it and see how I do. I’d like to see a chapter dedicated to people who work rotating shifts. How will this work for us? Maybe in your next book.

I so wanted to like this book...

Like mentioned before by other reviewers it has a lot of medical info, it was a large portion if the book and not needed. Keto green 16 should have been laid out better. From the recipes, exercises, to the medical info.

Intermittent fasting isn’t for everyone and a big turn off to me. It’s basically the keto diet with more greens and less protein and some more fruit. it just seems like a joyless diet. No thanks.

I found this book to be very thorough in talking about the "Keto-Green 16' and it's benefits. She talks about the benefits of the keto diet and why it does (or does not) work. She talks a lot about hormones and how they are affected by her eating plan as well as intermittent fasting. She goes into detail about all of these things, and her explanations are easily understandable. Exercise and its benefits are discussed, along with simple exercise plans to follow.

She discusses the foods allowed on her eating plan, as well as their benefits. There are a number of simple recipes using these foods. They are easy to put together and are composed of a variety of healthy, tasty foods. There are a number of pictures of these vibrants meals.

I look forward to trying some of the exercises and recipes. Her plan is not a one size fits all type of thing, and I think that is very important. It allows many types of people to try and have success with her plan.

Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I received this book via a Goodreads giveaway. I am new to ketogenic dieting and intermittent fasting. However; I am not new to green living. One thing that rang alarm bells is doing meal replacement and a lot of supplements. I do take supplements sporadically, but I think that they can hurt as much as they help.

I enjoyed the read and the information within. I did begin doing things to make my lifestyle more alkaline and went from PH 3/4 to PH 5/6. That definitely had a positive impact on my life. So this book is not without merit. That said I have a family of four and the recipes within simply won’t work for us. They require a lot of ingredients (some difficult to obtain) and serve little. I think that a lifestyle change has to be something that can be done permanently and making meals for me and separate ones for my family won’t work.

This book would be best for someone with enough time and money to attempt the program. The educational benefit of the read may serve everyone but the program sounds good but does not seem achievable.

Keto + alkaline foods for 16 days. Max 40g carbs a day. Intermittent fast, too. At the end of 16 days, add some less alkaline foods back in. Test you urine ph and ketones.

When a diet is limited to eating 16 foods, it’s hard to know if anyone loses weight because the diet is alkaline (as the author says) or just so limited in terms of time to eat and foods. The veggies are greens, sprouts, cruciferous (incl sauerkraut and Kim chi). The fruits are pineapple, mango, and papaya (and lemons/limes) although you can’t have much and stay under 40g carbs.

Excellent book, with recipes I love. Though you definitely have to enjoy cilantro to enjoy this style of eating. I had great success with this meal plan, loved that the days were planned out and recipes were all easy to make, and even my 15yo liked most of the ones we've tried to date. This is a plan I can follow long term and plan to.

Good approach to keto. I've tried keto before and always felt weighed down by all the heavy meat. This is different. Mostly veggies, lots of fat, some protein. She even has a plan for vegans (I'm not).

I won this book as a giveaway. I really enjoyed reading about all the ways in which the hormones in food are impacting our bodies. There was a heavy focus on premenopausal women which I felt to be both interesting, but also not totally relatable as there didn't seem to be as much information for younger women.

I was disappointed by the '16 theme' as a few other reviewers stated. I get that strategies like that are helpful to get people on board and energized to stick to a new routine, but 16 minutes of exercise a day, really?

I was very impressed by the wide selection of recipes. Unfortunately my advanced readers copy did not provide all page numbers, so when I need to reference how to prepare a food item (such as cauliflower rice) I won't be able to quickly reference the page number.

Overall, I liked this book and I will be using some of the recipes and strategies to help transform my eating habits. Thanks for sending the book!

Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Dr Anna Cabeca brings her expertise and experience with the Keto Diet to her new book Keto-Green 16. She delves into the scientific research of the Keto diet and how differing hormone levels effect progress in weight-loss and the body's ability to burn fat storage as fuel. She focuses on using alkaline foods, like leafy greens, to stabilize hormone imbalances. She has also created a 16 day plan coupling Keto and intermittent fasting to jump start weight loss.

I enjoyed this book as Dr Cabeca is very informed and explained in great detail a lot of the different scientific pieces that go into weight loss and structuring a diet plan. I have followed Keto for a while and appreciated learning some new concepts in balancing hormone levels. The 16 day diet plan would be good for a beginner looking to see some quicker results or someone looking to break a weight plateau. The recipes were okay and easy to follow but fairly basic.

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Books for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is pretty much your standard how-to Keto book. It explains the diet in great detail and the benefits of it. The book gives a decent 16 day meal plan plus recipes. I liked the medical portions and that she covers not only physical health but also mental/emotional health.

Overall, it's a decent book. Not sure if I would recommend to someone without any Keto knowledge because it could come off as a bit overwhelming--especially with the section on supplements (she lists quite a few).

Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for an ARC copy so I can give my honest opinion.

I thought this was an interesting book. I thought it was very well researched and it explained the Keto diet in a way so that ordinary people can understand it. I requested this book from Netgalley to see what exactly the Keto Diet really was and how it works. Granted I am not 100% sure that I am going to try this right now, but it is a great book for those who really want to try it. I liked the recipes they had towards the end of the book for the basics they talk about during the book.

There is some great info in here and she did inspire me to clean up my keto diet, but I kind of can’t stand the overemphasis on shedding belly fat, as if that’s the most important consequence of a healthy lifestyle. I also worry that following her plan to a T would result in women inadvertently not getting enough protein or calories.
I have yet to try the recipes, but definitely look forward to incorporating many of them.

Dr Cabeca loves helping women and she does a phenomenal job at it. She is easy to understand and as a triple board certified OBGYN, she knows her “stuff”! This book ( along with her products) will greatly improve your life and keep you from suffering from mid life issues, that so many have accepted as a just “part of life”. I highly recommend this book.
