Rate this book
Do you want or need to change your life, but aren’t sure where to start—or whether you have what it takes?

At fifty-seven, Arlene Dickinson’s life was turned upside down. Her company was on the brink of disaster. Her sense of herself as a strong, confident leader was in tatters. She was overwhelmed by feelings of loss, fear, and shame. Five years later, her business is booming, she’s never been happier or more excited about the future, and she’s raised tens of millions of dollars and built a whole ecosystem to help other entrepreneurs.

How did she turn things around? By following the process she’s always used to transform underperforming companies—only this time, she used it to transform her own life. Applying business principles to her personal life helped her figure out very quickly where she wanted to go and how to get there. Having a clear set of practical steps to follow kept her on track when emotions threatened to derail her progress.

In Reinvention, Dickinson shares this blueprint for locating your sense of purpose, realistically evaluating your strengths, assessing opportunities outside your comfort zone, and charting a bold new path. Whether you have a big career dream to achieve, or you need to rebuild after a personal setback, this step-by-step plan for reinvention will help you change your own life—for the better.

A surprising delight (a book recommended and lended to me), since I usually steer clear of anything with a celebrity author on the cover. Insightful and genuine, the author balances memoir storytelling with clear examples, practical next steps and cautionary tales for the reader to instill into their own life.

In 2013, heavy rainfall in Alberta triggered flooding. Venture, Arlene's company, was in Calgary and water rushed into the building where her company was located, flooding the basement offices ... computers, desks, files, office supplies, etc. were are destroyed. Financially and personally it was a trying time for her. But it provided her with the opportunity to take a step back and figure out what she wanted to do with the company (should she shut it down, carry on or change direction?). Plus she also wanted to figure what she wanted to do with her life. In some ways, she was just coasting and she wanted to have passion again. She ended up reinventing Venture to focus on helping entrepreneurs, which tapped into her own entrepreneurial spirit.

In this book, Arlene provides the steps if you want to reinvent yourself, your career and anything else in your life that you feel needs changing. She encourages you to "go backwards" to find out who you are versus who you think you are, to find your purpose (your "why") and how to move forward.

I have always admired Arlene Dickinson. I saw this book on the table at Indigo and started to read it. I ended up having to get it and I read the whole book in 2 evenings. Ms Dickinson writes well. It is conversational in style and easy to read. It makes you think - make sure you have a notepad handy because you will be jotting down notes as you read along.

I am in the same age group as Ms Dickinson and am embarking on a new career. The book provided me with some direction, some ideas, and much needed inspiration. I highly recommend.

If you want a cheerleader and guide as you change or reinvent part or all of your life, Arlene’s book is for you. I read the book with a pen, underlined a great deal, added margin comments, and completed the activities she suggested. I appreciate her experience having to reinvent several times in her life, and her knowledge of society and it’s influence on women and our choices. As I move out of one profession into another (with a lot of hard work) I will be referring back to this book many times over, as I continue my professional reinvention journey. Thank you Arlene!

On the other side of the Coronavirus storm many of us will either want to, or be forced to, reinvent ourselves. Spending extended time with our loved ones, including parents, kids, partners, and pets may lead us to question the quality of the lives that we lived pre-pandemic and the priorities we once held.

The loss of life close to home and worldwide may lead people to engage in deep thinking about how we want to spend our remaining time on earth. We are realizing that life is incredibly fragile and short. There is also a strong possibility, depending on what type of work we did before the maelstrom hit, that our jobs may not exist or that they are radically changed.

So many current uncertainties and a time of flux has created the perfect time to learn from Arlene Dickinson’s latest book, Reinvention: Changing Your Life, Your Career, Your Future.

Most people know Ms. Dickinson from her years on CBC TV’s Dragons’ Den. She started with the show in 2007 as the first female Dragon, staying on the show for eight seasons. And now, after a break, Ms. Dickinson has returned to Dragons’ Den and also stars on another show, Under New Management.

Both the personal and business reinventions that she has gone through have provided Ms. Dickinson with the expertise to share concrete advice with others who are seeking to reinvent their lives.

Like many changes in life the reinvention of her marketing business, Venture Communications, came about due to circumstances beyond her control. A flood in the summer of 2013 devastated her hometown of Calgary, Alberta and destroyed Venture’s physical premises. The fallout from the flood was disastrous as clients were lost and staff was laid off. After much soul searching Ms. Dickinson decided to reinvent the company to align more with what she had always really cared about – aiding Canadian entrepreneurs.

Along the way, Ms. Dickenson reinvented herself as an entrepreneur with the mandate of helping young companies to launch. To this end she raised millions of dollars in venture capital to start District Ventures. The business accelerator is the only one in Canada that specializes in food and health products. Currently the fund stands at $70 million, and is growing.

Ms. Dickenson’s method for personal reinvention is the same formula that she has used for 30 years with the companies that have sought her guidance in transforming their brands.

Follow the formula!

Figure out your brand identity, including where you have been and what you stand for.
Do a self-audit and assess your current situation. How have you been spending your time?
Create a strategy to reach your goal.
Share your goal with others.

Ms. Dickenson’s no nonsense guidance cuts to the heart of the matter as she clarifies that you may not get another opportunity to reinvent yourself. And we know this now more than ever – that nothing is promised in life and we must make our own destinies in the world.

As she expresses, “Aim high, higher than where you are today, knowing that capping your own dreams is a form of self-betrayal. Don’t deny the world the contribution that only you can make.”

If you know that you want to make a personal change regarding a relationship, your career, and what you want for the future you owe it to yourself to read Reinvention and to learn from the Queen of Reinvention herself, Arlene Dickinson.

Reinvention - Changing your Life, Your Career, Your Future
~ Arlene Dickinson

This book entails a compelling exploration of personal transformation and resilience in the face of adversity. Drawing on her own experiences as an entrepreneur and television personality, Dickinson offers valuable insights and practical advice for navigating change and embracing new opportunities.

Some key learnings from the book

1. When the goal is lasting transformation, neither stubborn resistance nor a frenzy of willy nilly changes will do the trick
2. Reinvention can take you to a somewhat different destination than you have been dreaming of or hoping to reach. But it will take you somewhere. While you can’t do anything you can do something.
3. Reinvention does not require Herculean inner strength, incredible luck, family money or divine intervention. You don’t need a specialized training or a fancy degree to pull it off. What you need is courage , conviction and practical game plan.
4. Without you, it’s never going to happen. You are the only person who can change your own life. You need to be able to count on you too.
5. Surely your former self learned at some point that fear can be overcome. Failure is survivable and there are no rewards without risks. Experience the high that comes from putting yourself out there and trying something new.
6. Fly, Take risks, Make Mistakes , Try new things
7. If you feel uncertain about your future and fearful that taking risks could mess your file forever. Reinvention require getting comfortable with the notion that you don’t always know exactly what’s going to work or what’s going to happen next. One Great thing about your stage of life. False starts are very rarely outright disasters. And we always learn something about ourselves and the world that’s worth knowing
8. No one ever feels completely ready for change. People who are comfortable with change say it’s actually better not to feel ready. Mediocre Strategy & Great Execution
9. The best way to protect your brand is simply to be consistent in everything you do
10. Self awareness is the secret sauce of any reinvention.
11. Purpose is the higher reason for the brand to exist at the first place.
12. Companies that don’t just talk the talk but also walk the walk have exceptionally strong brands
13. Disruptors like Uber , Aribnb and Spotify were fast and first , creating the sharing economy. Before other could even articulate what was that and they pave the way for major shift in how we live.
14. Kaizen is a key pillar of the corporation’s success. Idea is beautifully simple: be conscious of each step you take and objective about its usefulness so you can come up with ways to perform that step even better.
15. To see whether there’s a gap between what you think you’re doing and what you actually are doing you need to track how you’r spending your time. Create Hour-Hour Inventory | . 3 Categories . Productive outcomes | Task linked to core purpose— learning, reading , up skill etc.| Downtime and distractions.
16. Currency + Core purpose = Super Power
17. Listen more than you talk. Nobody learn anything by hearing themselves speak
18. A leader has to e able to articulate what’s special about a company is a way that everyone can understand
19. If you’r really think you are onto something amazing, you look for backing and someone to partner with not a coattail to grab on to, because you have the confidence that your idea is strong enough to carry you
20. Money isn’t the solution. You are the solution and true lasting confidence comes only from knowing that you can start walking down it all by yourself
21. Good Advice, Expect missteps . Expect to spin your wheels occasionally. Expect missed deadlines. They don’t mean you are worthless or that your plan is pointless . They are proof that you are changing and learning and both activities can be messy
22. When you are doing something new , you are bound to make a rookie mistake There’s a learning curve as there always is when you are trying to do something you have never done. To climb up you may need some help from people who know the terrain better than you.
23. The take-away : Aim high, higher than where you are today, knowing that capping your own dreams is a form of self betrayal. You’re playing small doesn’t serve the world. Don/t deny the world the contribution that only you can make. Being a parent , a better person or better executive . They world can use better version of all of us
24. If it turns out that you’ve dreamed the impossible dream. You just don’t have the right currency. Or the context is all wrong. Don’t give up on yourself. You can still do something that aligns with core purpose. Something that uses all your unique talents, interests and atibutes. Something that makes your life better place than today.

This book is bursting with inspiration for whatever you choose to take on in life, and at whatever age!
I read it in chunks, to savour, took notes, paused, returned, experienced COVID stagnation, but then felt like 'reinventing' my attitude!

I just loved it and Dickinson's personal examples of strife and triumph. So, I will just quote some of her no 'BS' advice, and you can read the rest for yourself.

"To change your life, you have to be comfortable being the star of your own movie."
She says to ask yourself 'who am I living for?' She suggests 'you need to reclaim as much of your own time as possible.'
"This is the real danger of living for other people: it means that no one is living for you."

"There's no shame in trying something, deciding its not for you and cutting your losses."
" Each time you change direction, you increase your value, whether you succeed or not."

Re Haters: "The silver lining is that there's nothing like success to reveal who's always been in your corner and genuinely wants the best for you..."
"If someone feels threatened by your success, you're probably doing something right."

Definitely an uplifting book! You'll want to buy copies for others, too, as I did. (All physical copies.)

This one will take a coveted space on my bookshelf of what I fondly refer to as "the bibles" - those books on personal growth or innovative thinking that had me underlining passages like crazy and marking pages. Books that I will go back to again and again. Arlene has you work through your purpose and currency and core values much the way businesses must work to reinvent themselves so that you can reinvent your life and have the confidence to step boldly into it. But there are no mushy accolades in here. True to her tough style, Arlene doesn't pull any punches and she shares honestly where she screwed up, fell short and had to learn and re-learn to rise back up again. It's a great read for entrepreneurs or anyone just thinking of starting over in some way and it's also super timely COVID has ushered in so much disruption that many are figuring out how to pivot.

Arlene Dickinson seems like a very nice and driven person. Reinvention is largely an autobiographical account of some of the big changes she has gone through in her life. Other than her attribution of a ‘shelf life’ to most of her friends, there are some good lessons here.

The book however claims ‘change your life, your career, your future’; but other than providing inspiration through Ms. Dickinson’s personal experiences and a single approach to change (hers), it was very light on alternative practical approaches to the challenges.

The analogy, ‘here is how I reinvented my company… and you can apply the same approach to your own reinvention’ is overused. The book spends too much time on the first part of this analogy and not nearly enough time on the second.

But hats off to the results of her hard work and perseverance. The autobiography really was inspiring.

I experienced significant personal & professional upheaval in my life and I'm still working through it. (same age as Arlene) Reinvention is an encouraging read and a practical 'how to' to take one through the process of recreating or rediscovering who you are.

I appreciate Arlene's openness and honesty, her courage to be vulnerable. What I most admire about her is her reaching back from her seat at the table to bring others along.

The perfect time for me to read Arlene's story of reinvention. Thanks for the reminder that I have everything I need to stay on this path and to weather whatever life brings - Me. As Glenda says, 'you've always had the power my dear.'

Excellent, engaging advice told from a personal perspective. Arline’s best book yet!

The book was a gift and I did not think I was looking to reinvent myself - however I found myself immersed in Arline’s frank disclosure of her own life and some great ideas anyone can apply to their personal or business lives.

Great read to begin a new decade! I hope Arline will follow up with a workbook/journal that acts as a handy guide through her Reinvention process.

Thanks Arline for sharing from the heart!

Heartfelt & Honest

Reinvention reveals as much about the Author as one can learn about themselves. The message, goals, and path to Reinvention of oneself is realistic & achievable as presented in this book. Arlene puts herself out there in informative and funny examples of how she persevered through her own Reinventions, making the journey through this book both engaging and heartfelt.

Portions of the book were helpful. I think this is helpful for people who need to start over and need a bit of a road map on how to go about that, this will be helpful to some extent. Alot of this I had already figured out and did not find this book as engaging as others I've read. Still did find some helpful nuggets

Some good takeaways but the constant references to Dragon's Den without explaining anything about the show got annoying. It was assumed the reader was familiar with the show. I'm not, and have no idea what it's about. Not everyone watches TV.

Arlene’s tone is defined, clear, concise and oh so real! So much so, she makes you feel like you could call her Arlene if you ever met her and invite her for a beverage. A fantastic honest business book that is not filled with the latest buzz words. It is the voice of enlightened experience. With a plan to follow if you listen. And take notes!!!
