Mizuhara gets locked out, which means an evening at Kazuya’s featuring an unexpected appearance by Mami. Then, Ruka offers a lot (a lot) of temptation and throws a serious spanner in the works, which provides the most ludicrous excuse yet to jam Sumi back into the proceedings.
I mean, every volume of this series follows a same pattern after a fashion - Kazuya sucks then sucks maybe a little less, Mizuhara is way into him then isn’t, Mami shows up and sucks, Ruka and Sumi cause trouble from the sidelines.
This is no different here, although the whole ‘locked out’ fiasco has probably the best moment in the book, where Kazuya saves Mizuhara from falling off a balcony by grabbing her butt (I like her protestations that he should have grabbed her hips, as if that would somehow be better).
The real meat to this scene is Kazuya frantically describing Mizuhara’s waist region in terms of the exact sound effects being used in the previous panels. I take great pains depicting this just because it’s rare for this series to amuse me to such an extent.
Also, the rest of this scene is Mami being a colossal pain in the ass, which seems to be her dominant character trait. She was much better when she was being a concerned temptress as opposed to the busybody she seems to be slotted into.
Ruka doesn’t appear to want to take her fake girlfriend status lying down (well, you know what I mean), so she storms her way in to Kazuya’s apartment and ends up trapped there by a typhoon (they should have named it Mami).
We get yet another masturbation situation for Kazuya, followed by Ruka essentially offering herself up on a platter because she’s easily revved up by Kazuya for reasons that one can only guess at.
Despite this, I give it up to Kazuya for not thinking with his small brain for once and doing the right thing, but in such a way that it lets Ruka down easy. Or gives her the entirely wrong idea and leads to her utterly sabotaging a lot of progress between our leads.
It says something that Mizuhara could believe Kazuya, but doesn’t, though that would make for a fairly dull narrative. It’s also at least semi-plausible that she wouldn’t, given her own feelings and Kazuya’s history. But it also seems like she should give him a little benefit of the doubt by now.
In the end, Kazuya’s genius plan is to do something for Mizuhara’s pending birthday and that ends up involving renting Sumi to help him pick out a gift (this seems like THE most ridiculous way to do things). It is nice to see Sumi has grown a little more confident and her incredibly shy demeanour at least distinguishes her from the others.
Basically it’s a lot of what we’ve had before, though Kazuya is doing the right thing more often than not. Still, I feel like he could have been doing a bit better at this far sooner, but he’s also partially hamstrung by being the protagonist of a harem manga.
3 stars - I mean, honestly, this series is pretty much the same thing each time and it’s neither particularly bad nor particularly good - it’s just constantly on the cusp of being better and never quite getting there. The art makes up large chunks of why I enjoy this series, but the plot wasn’t egregiously offensive this time and I appreciated that.

The start of this volume goes on far too long for it's own good. But once we get to Ruka comes back into the picture, a sleep over is happening, and plenty of funny situations. Then we get to Sumi and her helping Kazuya pick a gift which is also really cute.

This is a loose review of volumes seven and eight.
If I base the rating on how much I’ve become invested in the fake people this series features, and how I look forward to future events that will involve them, I can’t rate these volumes any less than a five, even if it that means spitting on the sanctity of the GoodReads rating system.
At the end of the previous volume, the escort coprotagonist, whom the protagonist is in love with, had attempted to ignite past feelings in the guy’s ex so she would attempt to love him again (or for the first time, given that I doubt she ever had). The protagonist, however, is solely in love with the escort at this point, and in the last page he opens up to her about how he wants her and nobody else. However, at the beginning of this segment of the story, the protagonist backs down on his words to pretend that he meant that he wanted to keep renting her services. The escort pretends not to know what he meant, and dismissed the tense situation by stating that it’s only natural, because she had been his “girlfriend”, emphasis on the quotes, for a whole year already.
In any case, she had informed him that she was going to star in a play, something that apparently only her grandmother and her classmates from acting school know about. The protagonist is eager to attend and see her on stage. When he does, he witnesses her melting into her role as a princess’ bodyguard in a humorous tale based on Japan’s or China's past. The escort shows a huge talent for verbal and physical comedy. The protagonist, recovered from the initial shock, laughs along, and when the escort’s character dies, the protagonist cries. When the play has ended and the public has left, he remains seated, having realized that the girl he’s in love with is a unique gem who’ll go far in this world.
However, the scout that was supposed to push her acting career forward is an aged director who at the end of the play beelines to the actress that had played the princess, and offers her the opportunity that the escort had wanted. She hears that the actress who played the princess is related to someone the director had a connection with. The escort went from being hopeful to feeling as if she’s been beaten to a pulp, and instead of going to the afterparty she bails. She suffers the private pain that most people only consider as a distant possibility, that of genuinely having given all she could, only to find out that it wasn’t enough (the ol’ “Karma Police” curse). In an interesting psychological moment, she internalizes the reality of the artistic world in most cases, which consists of making it only as long as you have the needed connections, as her simply not having enough talent, under the comfortable assumption that if only you had enough talent all doors would open for you.
The protagonist is wandering the streets in a daze, thinking of his beloved, when they cross paths. She pretends she isn’t massively disappointed, but when the protagonist insists on figuring out how things went for her backstage, she says that she was told that she wasn’t talented enough, and that she’ll have to do this escorting thing for a while longer. In another interesting psychological moment, the protagonist feels like total trash, because he is a little relieved as it means that he’ll get to go out with her for that much longer. The girl, justifying having been pushed out of her opportunity, says that she’s the same as the protagonist, that she keeps repeating the same mistakes. “I pretend to be someone’s girlfriend, take their money, and throw it away in my ‘dream’, even though that ‘dream’ is out of reach for someone as talentless as me.” The protagonist flies into a rage, and yells in public about how they aren’t in any way the same. He goes on about how he’ll book her services for week after week, and even more time in between if possible, and that he’ll go as far as getting another job to pay for it if it means that she’ll keep chasing her dream. The protagonist has developed into the manga equivalent of the men who donate three quarters of their salary to female Twitch streamers, which is the epitome of manliness in this modern world.
She pretends not to be moved and deflates the situation. When she gets home, she holds the heavily annotated script with all kinds of indications she had written to do as good a job as possible, and cries. Her phone receives a notification after another of the protagonist having set more appointments for her services as an escort, which along with remembering his public outburst makes her happier.
We get some payoff to the side story of the shy escort the protagonist had helped. She now found the courage to hold on to one of her clients pinky fingers of her own volition, which after the date ends contributes to prompting the client to thank her for her efforts and wishing to meet her again. Success?

Their sophomore year of college has begun, and by this point the protagonist is focused on how he can make things work with the escort in a romantic sense. He’s fully aware of being head over heels for this girl he might possibly never end up dating. He’s gone on a fake date with her again, after having had to ask permission to his supposedly actual girlfriend. Back in volume four she had blackmailed her way into a trial relationship with the protagonist under the threat that she would reveal that he’s hiring escorts and that the coprotagonist is an escort respectively. With more and more people having found out already (even the guy’s ex), the scenes with this annoying girl mostly serve to derail the main thread of the story. At least so far it hasn’t wrecked the series as much as her counterpart Misa Amane did to “Death Note” [as an unnecessary aside, I don’t understand why most people suggest “Death Note” and “FMA” as the entry points into anime. “Death Note” has quite a few moments to narrative brilliance, but it’s too idiosyncratic to be representative, and after the aforementioned girl gets introduced, the show takes a nosedive. Not content with that, after a certain main character dies, the story continues seemingly more because of editorial pressures than because the narrative could support it. And "FMA" I just found it insufferable].

After the date ends she asks him to follow her to something else she wishes to do. She guides him to one of those batting cages common in Japan, where she often had gone to release steam. She says that he wants him in a friendly sort of deal to shield her from the men that usually accost her gorgeous self whenever she goes alone to do anything. The protagonist hears some guys wanting to approach the girl, only for them to notice that he’s on a date with her, and then wonder how come they are together. The protagonist wishes they would leave him alone. By the end, the girl happily announces that from then on they should get along normally as friendly neighbors. They high five.
She later drags him to visit her grandmother at the hospital. She’s been hospitalized again and one supposes she doesn’t have that long. During a moment in which the escort is absent, the protagonist tells the grandma how brilliant the girl was onstage, and also how she constantly amazes him by how strong and reliable she is. The grandmother is surprised because most she remembers of the escort is her being a lonely, clingy crybaby of a little girl. She offers that the escort hides her weaknesses by wearing a persona like a suit of armor, that in a way she is always acting. By the end the grandmother bows and asks him, while her hands tremble, to please take care of the girl. He states honestly that he is in love (with the granddaughter).
When they get back home, turns out she’s lost her keys, and she casually walks into his apartment. He supposes that this will mean that she will spend the night, but she goes to his balcony and wants to attempt to pass over to her own. The whole thing turns into an ecchi situation that feels a bit beyond the relationship between these two at this point. When she’s trying to maneuver into her own balcony, she slips, and the protagonist has to grab her ass to prevent her from falling, and then she falls face up on his balcony floor, only to end up with him on top of her. She’s not that eager to push him off this time, but in one of those inconvenient coincidences, turns out that the protagonist’s ex ding dongs his apartment. This is bad news, because the protagonists are not supposed to have a relationship beyond being escort and client, and if the ex learned that the escort is still messing with the protagonist after having been told off, the ex might attempt to ruin her life. They end up hiding; he had failed to lock his door. Despite the ex opening the door, she doesn’t enter, and eventually leaves. However, she had for some reason taken a photo of the apartment and in there she later on notices a woman’s purse.
When the escort is going to retrieve a key from their landlord and says goodbye nonchalantly, the protagonist declares that if anything happens to her or if life gets her down and she can’t talk about it to the people she prefers, she can always talk to him. She opens up then about her parents being gone: her father left their family shortly after she was born, and her mother died not too long after that. He says that he’s awed by her strength and that he wishes to see her fulfill her dreams. He goes a bit further by stating that he wants to stay by her side forever, if she would let him. She poker faces him, but she says that she can’t disallow him from doing so after asking earnestly.
They also cross paths at college, where she’s in disguise and he’s not supposed to acknowledge her. However, she subtly addresses the ridiculousness of the situation by offering a ghost high five to the guy, who is so happy about it that he starts prancing around.
The guy’s ex takes this chance at college to finally address the fact that she knows he had been hiring escorts for a year. The girl is as shady as they come, and you can’t tell what she’s really feeling, but after she attempts to extract out of him whether he and and the escort had developed some special relationship, he lies to her. In the end she wishes him to stop wasting his money and time on whores and instead find himself a real girlfriend. He’s relieved when she leaves, but she has just begun wrecking his life, as she beelines towards his college pal who still doesn’t know the protagonist’s girlfriend is an escort.
Meanwhile the protagonist has an actual girlfriend, and this annoying girl, named Ruka, sets up a dinner date in the guy’s house so she can get to his heart (and other parts) through filling his belly. Not a bad strategy. There’s also a typhoon or another similar Japanese nature stuff going on, which means she’ll likely have to spend the night, which she also intended. The protagonist isn’t in love with this girl nor does he tolerate her really. As the cute girl in a short skirt prepares dinner for him, he teeters between his rational and emotional loyalty towards the escort next door, and the wish of his increasingly harder little guy to just get this whole virginity thing squared away. The girl is fully aware that the protagonist prefers the escort next door, and occasionally she raises her voice to make the neighbor know that the protagonist belongs to someone else, to the dismay of the guy. She gets so comfortably close to him that he ends up masturbating in the bathroom to ride the rest of the evening on the post-nut haze; however, the girl realizes that he’s done so, and increases her attention. At one point a couple of condoms fall out of her purse, and she has to admit that she had been planning to steal his virginity that night.

When the escort is going to retrieve a key from their landlord and says goodbye nonchalantly, the protagonist declares that if anything happens to her or if life gets her down and she can’t talk about it to the people she prefers, she can always talk to him. She opens up then about her parents being gone: her father left their family shortly after she was born, and her mother died not too long after that. He says that he’s awed by her strength and that he wishes to see her fulfill her dreams. He goes a bit further by stating that he wants to stay by her side forever, if she would let him. She poker faces him, but she says that she can’t disallow him from doing so after asking earnestly.
They also cross paths at college, where she’s in disguise and he’s not supposed to acknowledge her. However, she subtly addresses the ridiculousness of the situation by offering a ghost high five to the guy, who is so happy about it that he starts prancing around.
The guy’s ex takes this chance at college to finally address the fact that she knows he had been hiring escorts for a year. The girl is as shady as they come, and you can’t tell what she’s really feeling, but after she attempts to extract out of him whether he and and the escort had developed some special relationship, he lies to her. In the end she wishes him to stop wasting his money and time on whores and instead find himself a real girlfriend. He’s relieved when she leaves, but she has just begun wrecking his life, as she beelines towards his college pal who still doesn’t know the protagonist’s girlfriend is an escort.
Meanwhile the protagonist has an actual girlfriend, and this annoying girl, named Ruka, sets up a dinner date in the guy’s house so she can get to his heart (and other parts) through filling his belly. Not a bad strategy. There’s also a typhoon or another similar Japanese nature stuff going on, which means she’ll likely have to spend the night, which she also intended. The protagonist isn’t in love with this girl nor does he tolerate her really. As the cute girl in a short skirt prepares dinner for him, he teeters between his rational and emotional loyalty towards the escort next door, and the wish of his increasingly harder little guy to just get this whole virginity thing squared away. The girl is fully aware that the protagonist prefers the escort next door, and occasionally she raises her voice to make the neighbor know that the protagonist belongs to someone else, to the dismay of the guy. She gets so comfortably close to him that he ends up masturbating in the bathroom to ride the rest of the evening on the post-nut haze; however, the girl realizes that he’s done so, and increases her attention. At one point a couple of condoms fall out of her purse, and she has to admit that she had been planning to steal his virginity that night.

This volume really stressed me out!
I was worried Kazuya was going to ruin everything when Chizuru had to go into his room because she lost her keys and Mami showing up out of the blue! And don't even get me started on the stuff Ruka pulled!
I had to keep putting this down because I was really waiting for Kazuya to screw it all up but he didn't and I guess that just goes to show that he has had some character development. But still! Not enough that I would trust him! Especially with the stunt that Ruka pulled! What a little gremlin!
Also Mami is up to something again and I'm not looking forward to it... she's never up to anything good and I'm so glad Kazuya isn't in love with her anymore because she's actually awful!
But enough about Mami and Ruka lol because Sumi was so cute in this volume! Her dragging him off the bench at the end killed me lol the woman was on a mission! Though I am a little worried because you can clearly see that Sumi is starting to have feelings for Kazuya and honestly that boy does not need another woman after him haha but I also can't see Sumi doing anything about it and I think she'll just have a crush on him from afar, without him even knowing.
I hope the next volume isnt as stressful... fingers crossed!

I will admit, Kazuya constantly bemoaning his "terrible" situation that is entirely of his own doing got annoying REAL FUCKIN' QUICK, but overall I did have a lot of fun with this volume. I'm starting to drift away from the romance aspect of this series because at this point it's so unnecessarily convoluted and I can't be fucked to care, but at the same time I enjoy seeing Kazuya interact with each woman, especially Ruka (best girl, don't @ me). And of course, the drama is always at 150% and I do love me some drama. I really do hope that Kazuya gets his shit together and starts behaving like a proper adult, but considering I've said that in almost every review I've done and it still hasn't happened, I'm not holding my breath.

Kazuya finally declares his devotion to Chizuru. However, he also gets tricked into letting Ruka come cook him supper AND spend the night! As she leaves in the morning, she purposely shouts somethings towards Chizuru's door, which she was on the other side of. She's hurt bad. She's torn. She has developed feelings for Kazuya, but is too scared to tell him, she's built Iron walls around her heart. Even though Chizuru pushed Kozuya to date Ruka, she's now regretting it, and she's badly hurt that Ruka spent the night at Kazuya's place. Nothing happened, but Chizuru is convinced something did. Oh and Mami confronts Kazuya about the whole rental girlfriend thing, and implores him to stay away from Chizuru.

This one moved the story ahead on different fronts. And Kazuya is really growing up. Still, I feel like there is only one possible relationship and everything else is just an obstacle for him to grow. Which is harsh on Ruka especially.

This was another good volume. Each character gets some development and some time to shine. I really feel for Ruka. She is probably the most compelling and sympathetic character in the story. She gets some quality time in this volume.

sigh… this is just a guilty pleasure now… it’s kinda the same thing over and over again but it’s still pretty entertaining even though i’m just barely hanging on by a thread in my wanting to eliminate Kazuya from this planet…

Well, Kazuya claims not to be popular, but he is surrounded and liked by beautiful girls! There are always good chances, but it ends with nothing. It remains to be seen what the author will come up with to continue the story.
