Devil's Claw

Rate this book
Two half-siblings lay claim to the same stretch of gorgeous, coastal property. Other players have their own ideas for Lot 429. Some of them lead to murder.

It's summer, and with a new job, a new life, and plenty of time for her music, life couldn't be better for Logan McKenna. She and her daughter, Amy, home from Africa, even rescue an orphaned sea otter pup and help nurse it back to health at Jasper's new Sea Otter Center.

But powerful storm clouds soon begin to swirl around the center, threatening the lives of all who enter it. More than one person lays claim to the property and all want it badly—but for very different reasons.

The murder of someone close to Logan soon exposes deep layers of resentment, greed, and painful, personal loss. Only love, trust, and community will have any chance of stopping the killer, before more lives, including Logan's own, are lost.

A book addict from way back, I cut my teeth on fairy tales and C.S. Lewis, skipping class to hang out in the library. Later, I moved on to Tolkein and Twain. During graduate school, I only had time to read Anthropology books, so it wasn't until later I got hooked on Mysteries and Thrillers. Michael Conneally's Bosch, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, C.J. Box, J.A. Jance's Sheriff Brady, and Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon. I don't know about you, but I burned through those books as fast as I could discover a new series. Still do!

But it wasn't until I had a serious back injury that I realized how important well-written stories were to me. I could get lost in a good book. They kept my mind off of things over which I had not control. And even though they were pure fiction, the ones with strong, female protagonists inspired me to overcome my own hurdles in life. I realized I not only enjoyed reading them, but I wanted to write books like that.

Somewhere during that time, the character of Logan McKenna began to take shape, eventually turning into my first book of the Logan series, SHATTERED. With 8 books and a novella prequel in the series so far, I am grateful readers have enjoyed getting to know Logan and friends and keep buying the books, allowing me to do what I love. I am rarely happier than when I am at my keyboard, headphones clamped on my head, listening to ocean waves crashing on rocks (my go-to white noise), allowing the story to flow out of my fingertips.

I also love to hear from readers. It may take a while due to my research and writing schedule, but I will answer!

My husband and I live in our dream forest cottage on the Oregon coast with our dog, Finn. We have six children and numerous grandchildren, grand dogs and a few grand cats. When I'm not at the computer, I'm usually out walking Finn or in the kitchen trying new recipes.

My favorite of the first three novels. Each Logan book has drawn attention to a particular topic and/or social commentary, allowing the reader to learn more about said topics. What I appreciate about this author's style is that she does this without making me feel I'm being lectured to by the author. In other words, the author doesn't allow her personal opinions to dominate the narrative. Each character might have a conflicting look at the world and she stays true to that particular character.

In this book we learn a lot about sea otters, research and rescue - which I found interesting. I always learn something while still being entertained as Logan finds herself immersed within a mystery. And it shows that the author thoroughly does her research of these topics before she sets pen to paper.

Thrills and Gasps and Smiles Continue

Ms. Davisson has succeeded in wonderfully entrapping me in another segment of Logan McKenna's life with forward momentum that slows enough for me to catch my breath before moving again at a perfect pace for me. I'm delighted to learn more about tge characters in Logan's life, saddened at the sudden loss of a dear one, loving Sadie, and thoroughly enjoying the complexities leading to what I consider a perfect outcome.

I’m having difficulty preventing myself from declaring what an “otterly” great story this is.
It seems I’ve failed. Sometimes you can’t resist.
Devil’s Claw begins with a mysterious prologue that immediately creates curiosity. A rich old man writes a letter, not knowing the upheaval it will bring nor the “crushing” of an innocent life. We are subsequently introduced to main character Logan McKenna, a widowed teacher struggling to find support for her music program.
And then we meet the baby otter, discovered by Logan and her daughter, Amy. What a fantastic, dramatic scene when the wee creature is found; I won’t say more to avoid spoilers. It’s worth several reads.
Baby otter lands at the new sea otter rescue center, the focal destination of the story’s action. An aging woman has funded the center, which also sits on a prime piece of California seaside. Which everybody wants.
Eventually, a violent and horrifying attack takes this (generally) cozy mystery down a dark path, led by a murderer with little left to lose.
Yet in between the mystery scenes are arguments for and against the otter center; a loud call for environmental responsibility; and wonderful dinners at a resto called Tava’e’s. The book’s ingredients are delicious, tangy, tart, and sweet, mixed occasionally with greedy rotten apples.
The plot is well-drawn, complex and believable; most of the characters are as well. The only thing that baffled me occasionally was the use of many points of view, sometimes within scenes or chapters. It didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of this timely and well-conceived story, but occasionally I felt it would have been appropriate if Logan, Amy, and perhaps one villain told most of it.
That said, Devil’s Claw is otherwise very smoothly and cleanly written. I liked the changes in writerly approach to some of the chapters — very clever — and greatly appreciated the message.
Otters rock.

Book three in Davisson’s ‘Logan McKenna Mystery Series’ and having read the previous two novels in the series I was looking forward to this one and was definitely not disappointed. Back with our fearless and extremely likeable and relatable independent heroine Logan McKenna I felt as though I was back with an old friend, as she has another mystery to solve. This novel sees Logan at a good point in her life, with a new job, plenty of time for her love of music and with daughter Amy home, Logan feels that her new life is just beginning.
Logan and Amy rescue an orphaned sea otter pup and this leads them to Jasper’s Sea Otter Centre where they help nurse the pup back to health. The Sea Otter Centre soon gets swept up in the property claim of Lot 429, a stretch of gorgeous coastal property which a lot of powerful players have their sights on including two fighting half siblings. When this leads to a murder of someone close to Logan, she begins to investigate and discovers resentments, greed and painful loss attached to Lot 429. The community must step up and help stop the killer before they strike again and before Logan herself becomes their next victim.
This was Logan’s third mystery and I was hooked from page one and the story kept me gripped until the very last page. The storyline was action packed and fast paced with a plot that kept me guessing until the end. The characters are all well defined and fascinating in their own right but Logan really does hold the story together, for me. It can be read as a standalone novel but the reader will have a better understanding of Logan’s backstory if the series is read in order. I look forward to future books in this exciting series.

Devil's Claw (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3)
By Valerie Davisson
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book Devil's Claw (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3) by Valerie Davisson. It is a story that once I started, I couldn’t put it down until the final page. It is a book that includes mystery and danger. I have enjoyed reading the first two books in the series and I found this one to be just as amazing. The author does a wonderful job of weaving a tale that had me turning pages wondering what will happen next. This story revolves around the disputed property of Lot 429. Some want the property for selfish reasons. How far with they go to possess it? Read this book to find out. I loved that this story includes a new Sea Otter Center. When reading about the center and the orphaned sea otter that is where my heart just melted. I love the character of Logan. She is intelligent, strong, and independent. She has a fierce determination as well as a true and kind heart. I also enjoyed reading about Amy, Logan’s daughter, and the part that she plays in this story. This book has heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. There are also moments of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. Other additional characters play their part and it is wonderful that some of those from the first two books make their appearance again in this one. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting, mysterious, and entertaining. I would recommend reading it.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery series. It is a crime thriller chock full of action, suspense, mystery, murder, intrigue, and drama. Logan McKenna’s life is going well, and she has settled into a comfortable life in her Southern California home near the beach. She has a new job and finally has plenty of time for her music. When her and her daughter rescue a baby Otter, they take it to the Southern Sea Otter Center where they nurse it back to health. Things take a sinister turn when the land the center sits on becomes the target of numerous individuals who all try lay claim to it. When someone Logan knows is murdered Logan takes it upon herself to investigate the mystery surrounding the property. She quickly finds herself swept up in a world of greed, resentment, loss, betrayals, secrets, and violence. Logan could be the next person on the killer’s hit list if she does not solve this mystery quickly enough. I loved the characters of Logan and Amy. Both are kind, smart, compassionate, and determined. The close relationship they had as mother and daughter was endearing and heartwarming. This story took some twists and turns as Logan worked to solve her latest mystery before more lives were lost. The more I read, the more intriguing the mystery became, and I was hooked until the very end. I highly recommend this series!

What happens when there is a piece of property that is up for grabs, and quite a bit of people are interested in it.... that is the big mystery! Well, that's what happened with prime real estate spot, Lot 429!
This is the third book in this series and our main character Logan, and her daughter are moving to California and have no idea what kind of adventure is in store for them.
As always, Valerie Davisson writes another great mystery adventure featuring our main character, Logan McKenna. Even though this is the third book of the series, Valerie does not fail to impress me with the detail she has added into the book. Some authors kind of lose you after the first couple of books of a series, but Valerie does not! The book opens with luring you into the story which will make you want to keep reading to uncover the truth and the mystery around the real estate plot 429. Will Logan be able to solve the mystery, save her daughter, save the Sea Otter rescue center, or will everything just continue to fall apart with no end in sight?
If you are looking for a great thrilling read, with its fair share of twists and turns then this is a must read!

Devil's Claw is the third book in the Logan McKenna series, and so far my favorite of the first three books. I am coming to find out each book focuses on a different social issue and is well presented in how it is handled. I never feel lectured or forced to see things from the author's POV, but rather shown that the issue exists, and how to navigate through that. Devil's claw taught me a bit about sea otters and rescue as a side educational portion to the actual storyline. The author paints vivid pictures describing her scenes and characters and the character development is believable and easy to follow. When a new sea otter rescue is presented with legal battles over who the real owner of the property is, greed and complications come out in full swing. Many people come forward as the owners, and the hostility amps up quickly. Inevitably, someone turns up murdered. With so many people involved...some with everything to lose, and everything to gain...who is the culprit? Very fast paced and edge of your seat writing style, and I liked this one the best so far. Can't wait to check out book 4!

We are in the third book of this series and they just keep getting better. I know that sounds like what everyone is writing but it is true. There is more background information given in this book than the last but it doesn't feel as though you are reading the same thing again if you have read the other books in the series. If you haven't and are just starting with this book it will give you some insight as to what the characters are going through and what has happened. I like that the author does this so anyone can start the series with any book. However, I feel like to get the most out of each book starting at the beginning would be the best to get everything you can out of it. In this book we get to know the main characters daughter. We also get to know sea otters. I know weird but it works in this book and actually really gave me some emotions I was not expecting in this book. There is the adventure and mystery that I have come to love with this author and this series. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I am loving to see what happens next and what adventures/mysteries we will go on in each book.

There is a prime real estate spot, Lot 429, there are alot of interested parties but what will happen?

This is the third book in this series and we follow Logan and her daughter moving to California and what will this move hold.

The book opens with a great lure into the story which will make you want to keep reading to uncover the truths and the mystery around the elusive plot 429. As the story weaves through you are introduced to great characters which have you wondering and thinking what is there motives regarding everything. As you uncover the truths within the story you are drawn deeper into the mystery and try to uncover who the murderer is.

I really enjoyed this well and developed story, it will have you reading well into the night to try and uncover the brilliant twists and turns of the brillant story. I loved the mixture of characters which just enhanced the story even more.

If you are looking for a great thriller, with a few twists and turns then this is your book, I can't wait to read the next installment within this series.

Devil's Claw (Logan McKenna Series Book 3) by Valerie Davisson

Devil’s Claw is the third book in the Logan McKenna Series is a wonderfully written Crime/ Thriller that will have you turning the pages till the end. I’m a huge fan of this author and her style of writing along with her creative characters make for an epic story. I didn’t realize I was starting with the third book so I plan on going back and reading the first two books in this series to get me caught up with what’s been going on. There’s plenty of twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Logan is back and ready to tackle the newest murder but this one is different as its someone who’s close to her. Everyone wants the property lot 429 but at what lengths are they willing to go to get it? I’m afraid I’m going to give away to much information. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

Logan's daughter, Amy, is home from her travels in Africa. She's home because she is receiving treatment for and recovering from malaria. She's under strict orders to get as much rest as possible. Liam, Amy's boyfriend, is taking the doctor's orders very seriously and monitoring Amy's progress hourly.

The sea otter center, which is fairly new, receives a new sea otter pup after Logan and Amy find it trapped in some seaweed while on a walk one day. Eager to learn more about the habits of sea otters, Amy volunteers, along with several of her friends, to help nurse the otter back to health.

A snag has come up in the sea otter center though as another person has come up claiming rights to the property. There is a lot of legal battling going on, and then a break-in, some injuries, and a murder. What has Logan gotten herself into this time?

I enjoyed this story and it kept me engaged. This one was a bit more emotional for me because of the situations within the story. I continue to look forward to reading more of this series.

I just loved this cover 🥰 I was also looking forward to meeting Logan’s daughter that’s been in Africa 😍

Jasper has a sea otter centre and Amy and Logan help look after the little orphan they rescued and I think it was good for them to bond over this precious little bundle of fur , the centre is situated on prime property and it would seem someone is after it and wants it and is not afraid of taking any means to get their hand on it ..,,

A storm of epic proportions is heading to jasper and when I say storm I mean in more ways than one ….. arriving for her shift Logan comes upon a gruesome discovery, one volunteer is dead and another is holding on by a thread and worst of all her daughter is missing as is the rescue centres raft and my heart just about stopped as a mom and a reader 🙈my nerves were on edge !

Te fight is on to find Amy because either way she’s in serious danger …. Out of the 3 books I’ve read so far this has been my favourite

Each book is better than the previous and that’s a promising sign for what is still to come 🥰

Logan is at it once again in book 3! She just can't seem to stay away from the murder mysteries! In this book her and her daughter are moving to California. But what happens when there is a fight for the property Lot 429? A gorgeous stretch of coastal property with a Sea Otter rescue center. The center needs help, but will Logan be able to not only save her daughter but bring yet another murderer to justice all while trying to help said center?! A dangerous coastal storm is on it's way and it's growing more and more violent as she races to find her daughter and a baby sea otter they were caring for. Finding a student murdered and another victim barely alive, Logan's worst fears are coming to life. Can she enlist the help of friends and figure out this mystery before more lives are lost? She's stopped killers before, but now her daughter's life is on the line! Man oh man! What a great book! One of my favorites so far! I love the little otter twist to the story. You learn so much with these books and they are so fun and of course mysterious!! I can't wait to read the rest to the set!!

This is the book in this series, I enjoyed it just as much if not more than the previous stories. I highly suggest reading all of the books in this series. This is a story that is full of action and suspense. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. Logan is back in this book with a new murder but this time it’s someone close to her. Lot 429 - is a partial of property that is in high demand. Everyone seems to want it but how far will they go to get it? As the story turns dangerous, a community trying to stop a murderer may just turn more deadly. Logan has been one of my favorite characters from the beginning. She is a strong character and really just makes the story for me. I have no problems connecting with her and the rest of the characters in the story. This is an easy, entertaining story and it made a great afternoon story. I highly recommend this book.

Devil's Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery #3 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson

Davisson has really done it again. This book is phenomenal and I really hope there's more to the series. This is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery Series.

Logan is happy to have her daughter home although not how she wanted. When she gets the call from her daughter that she found otters Logan rushes to help her. Ben is still in her life and she couldn't be happier.

Amy goes to the Otter Sanctuary only to find that something had happened. Logan gets worried when she doesn't hear from Amy so she rushes to be by her daughter's side. The quote I chose for Logan is: “You and Mike are great parents. You’ve given Haley a solid foundation. You’re doing all the right things. You’re giving her the chance to grow up. It’s going to be up to Haley. If it’s any consolation, I think she’s a great kid.”

Highly recommended for lovers of crime and drama.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in Valerie Davisson’s Logan McKenna series. You can read it as a standalone as it has its own ‘story’ but like with any other series, I feel that one should start from the beginning as every book builds upon the previous one when it comes to the characters that are there from one book to the other.
I loved the opening to the story – having an old man reflecting on his life and writing a letter that would have an impact 40 years later … powerful. Also, I lover Pacific Northwest so the detailed description of the nature and the maritime life, especially the otters … such a treat! Obviously as it is Logan McKenna story, it means there is a violent death that brings along so many different layers of human nature – we get thrown into greed, personal loss while we also have the hope through the community keeping together and the trust and love we find there …
Welcome to the fight for the Lot 429!

You just can't resist the otter jokes in this one.
Logan and her ever interesting life finds her a struggling teacher trying to find funding for her music program. One day her daughter Amy who is currently home with Logan and Logan discover a tiny baby otter in need of rescue which Introduces you to an otter rescue and resource center in a sleepy seaside town funded by an elderly local who owns a prime piece of land that several greedy people want when she dies. Of course this will Introduce several new people Into Logans life and she finds herself in the center of another mystery racing to solve it as the perpetrator literally has nothing else to lose.
These stories are great. Logan always finds herself mid drama and this book finds several view points which can be confusing if you aren't paying attention. I've gotten addicted to Logan and can't wait to see what else happens in her life path!

DEVIL’S CLAW (A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 3) by Valerie Davisson. This is an amazing book. I have loved these books and this is probably my favorite. This book reminded me of one of my favorite authors James Patterson. Its the story of Logan McKenna and her daughter who has come home from Africa. Logan has been left some coastal property along with her 1/2 sibling. The problem is someone else wants the property so badly that they will commit murder to have it. As Amy and her mom nurse a baby sea otter back to health we learn a ton about Sea Otters and their habitats. When someone Logan is close to is murdered she learns of long held resentment from someone that she had no clue was upset. Will this killer kill again before they figure out who it is? Will the property left to Logan be worth all the greed, loss of life and pain? Read Devil's Claw to find out!

This is book 3 in the Logan Mckenna series. This books is just as good as the first two. Packed full of adventure, mystery  and edge of your seat action.

Logan Mckenna is back. Her life is moving forward. With her new job and her new life and love everything seems to be on the right track finally.

That is until someone close to Logan is murdered. When some land comes up for auction there is a lot of conflict over it. What is so special about this land and how far will people go to get their hands on it?

As a community pulls together to catch and stop a murderer do they become more deadly than the murderer.

I love th authors writing. The way of writing creates the scenes for you so you actually feel that you are there. Its also nice to have a strong independent female lead character.

Devil’s Claw by Valerie Davisson is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller series. This book can be read as a standalone although it follows the same character so you might want to read the previous 2 first to get the overall build up.
This book is a great addition to the series and just as fast paced and exciting as the other two. The story is complex and interesting and you are drawn into it from the very beginning. I found myself flying through the book, desperate to find out what was going on and what was going to happen.
I loved getting back into the character of Logan. It is always so easy to become engaged with this character again which I think is partly why this series is such a good one. This book has left me just wanting more of them and I cannot wait to see what else is to come.

Devils Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery by Valerie Davisson is book three in the Logan McKenna series. It does seem as though you could read each book as a standalone, but being a series, I’d just read them in order. This story was a little closer to home for Logan than the previous two books. This one involves a murder at her job and then includes her daughter, Amy, missing. Logan and her daughter are back in California. There was a lot of interesting descriptions in this book, especially about Sea Otters. Again, Valerie is an amazing with making you feel right in the story and assisting with the descriptive movie in your head. But there were also a lot of people that were telling the story to keep track of. Overall, another decent read. I’d be interested in what other crazy scenarios Logan gets herself into.

Devil's Claw is the third book in The Logan Series by Valerie Davisson and is one of my favorites so far in this series! This book is so full of thrills, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this book! It was so exciting I read the whole book in one sitting; I just couldn't put it down! I had to know what happened to Logan's daughter Amy, and the adorable sea otter cub. If you love a good mystery series that is full of thrills and chills, then this series should be on your next-to-read list. The action that goes on is so mind-numbing, it's like you are right there experiencing everything through Logan's eyes, her fears are real! I am so excited to start on the next book in this series because if it's anything like the first three books in this series, it is going to continue to offer a thrill ride I can't wait to get started on.

Devil’s Claw
By: Valerie Davisson

I am truly enjoying the Logan McKenna Series. Each book seems to just keep getting better than the last. In each of these books, Logan finds herself deep in a mystery. Each mystery also seems to focus on a social issue or topic. In this case the book focused on sea otters and their rescue. This was a very interesting topic to intertwine in a mystery and I absolutely loved it. I loved how greed was the center of this tale and between that and the sea otters and I definitely did not want to put this book down. Valerie Davisson is a fantastic author who is able to create informative mysteries that have a great pace. She makes it almost impossible to put the book down because you want to find out what will happen next. I will most definitely be reading the next Logan McKenna book because I have loved the first three so very much!

I absolutely love how this author makes these books that you could read them as stand alone and not have to read them in order. Even thou there are probably parts that would be clearer if reading the books before, but you won’t feel too lost doing so. This was another great book with Logan and her challenges of being involved in murder and crime. This book really made a great informative story with sea otters that I found very enjoyable. I was hooked right from the beginning just like the others and couldn’t get enough of these stories. Logan is a strong willed, smart, string, courageous women. This book was filled with suspense, mystery, drama, secrets and so much more, that it kept me intrigued the whole time. I felt like I was constantly on the edge of my seat reading this. Really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to drive into the next one.

Devil’s Claw is the third book in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson.
Another cosy mystery- with drama, danger, crime, intrigue, and a little adventure. The author had me at sea otters, and the book got extra points for including the sea otters, their rescue, and research.
Logan is drawn into a dangerous situation as a piece of picturesque coastal land causes tension and danger to boil over with various parties laying claim to the same parcel of land. With a murder hitting close to home, Logan will have to get to the heart of the bitterness and greed if there is any possibility of thwarting the killer before they strike again.
Otterly intriguing!

Thank you, Valerie Davisson!

Devil's Claw by Valerie Davisson is the third book in the Logan McKenna Mystery series. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. The character of Logan McKenna is great to read about and there is always something interesting which turns Logan's world upside down. This book hits some themes which all will understand and relate to: resentment, pain, personal loss, and greed. What these do to some is unmentionable while others come through the flames. The story is interesting and kept me reading to find out what all the twists would lead to. I always enjoy a good story with interesting characters which keeps me reading late into the night. I look forward to where this series goes to in the future.

I would have to say that this is one of my favorites from Valerie Davisson. Her writing style is what holds my attention from the first page until the last. You need to pay attention to your surroundings because you may be missing so clues to assist you in the mystery. The story is about the property that is in high demand. Logan has a new murder to investigate. The characters are what keeps this thriller alive. It was quite dark when I finish and the little hairs on the back of my neck were standing on edge. I wanted Logan to help me get through the aftermath of the murder. Logan is a great character who has grown with every murder. I highly recommend this book for you to grow with Logan as well.

Devil's Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller Book 3 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson. This author has truly risen to some of my top favorites. This series keeps giving and I love everything it’s got to give. From the drama and mystery to its bits of adventure I love getting lost in its pages with each character. The characters are complex and well developed, pulling readers in completely and making them one not want it to end and two coming back for more and more. I found myself on the edge of my seat trying to read faster and slower all at once. Even the smallest details are focused on and well developed. I like the authors writing style and I I can wait to see where this author takes readers next. Four big stars and highly recommended!

Devil’s Claw: A Logan McKenna Mystery/Thriller by Valerie Davidson
Four Stars

Devil’s Claw is the third book in the Logan McKenna series by Valerie Davisson. This series keeps getting better and better. This book found Logan in the middle of a mystery. Logan and her daughter, Amy, found a baby otter pup and take it to the Sea Otter Center, and that is where all of the mayhem begins. This story had me up all night because I had to find out how this book ended. If you like book with action, adventure, mystery and did I mention, baby otters, this is the book for you. This book can be read as a standalone , but I highly recommend you read this series in order. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Davisson has in. Store for us next.
