RJ Blain suffers from a Moleskine journal obsession, a pen fixation, and a terrible tendency to pun without warning.

When she isn't playing pretend, she likes to think she's a cartographer and a sumi-e painter. In reality, she herds cats and a husband, and obeys the commands of Tsu Dhi, the great warrior fish.

In her spare time, she daydreams about being a spy. Should that fail, her contingency plan involves tying her best of enemies to spinning wheels and quoting James Bond villains until she is satisfied.

Unfortunately, the book left me disappointed. While Blain typically has a repetitive writing style, this one (like the last couple of her recent works) has taken that to the extreme, to the point where it's irritating and detracts from the story.

A fitting end for Bailey and Sam's story

While I enjoyed this book, Valley and Sam are favourites of mine, I did find it rather dialogue heavy. There was not much action ----- though Bailey does get to burn a lot of things down ------ the story continues on from where the last book left off. Bailey and Sam are in Vegas with all their family and friends there to see them get 're -married then it's off on their honeymoon. Being who they are it's not your normal honeymoon, the two of them set out to continue investigating Chief Morrison ( who was responsible for the events in book one) they are not supposed to be doing any investigating so come up with a clever roundabout way of achieving their goal. This pays off in spades and what they find leads them finally to the truth of what's behind all the events in the previous books. It's a clever culmination of the story begun in book one and all the loose ends are tied up extremely well. The four stars and not five are for the lack of action and the dialogue. The reason for all the dialogue is that this is basically a two character book. Bailey and Sam spend the majority of the book with just each other for company. This is not to the books detriment as they are two endearing characters. I read the afterword by the author and can't believe some people are leaving harsh reviews if the author deviates from the ( Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) I have read everything this author has written ---------- even the books written under pseudonyms -------------- and most of her other series are excellent, especially the Witch and Wolf series and the Royal States series her latest series The Fox wolf is absolutely brilliant so if you are limiting yourself to just one series you are missing out.

Enjoyable end to the Bailey trilogy. I like HEAs that aren't typed up in a perfect little bow. Bailey started the series isolated and alone, that the series ended with her being RIDICULOUSLY 180 from it made me happy.

But also I read the author's note and what kind of ASSHOLES go one star books because they're not the series they like. Am I big fan of the author's other series? Not so far. Do I recognize that they're actually higher quality than this one? YES. Don't one star better books because they aren't the brain candy you wanted, that's a YOU problem.

ETA I just started to read the reviews and some people apparently feel a way about the author note. So, my two cents. An author going after someone for bad reviews is bad, but that's not what's going on in the author's note. Rating books affects the algorithms for ebook retailers. People brigading her other series with low star reviews that SPECIFICALLY mention this one DIRECTLY affect her income. This isn't an author complaining about bad reviews, this is an author complaining about bullying and giving people fair warning of what the consequences will be.

I’m happy chief Quinn finally got their happily ever after. I loved the crazy families and as always Lucy makes everything even better. It was fun and it was chaotic. It did feel a little dragged out towards the end and fell back on a new food obsession and planning a murder that is doomed to fail. Plenty of new additions but felt more like a game. So and so acquired move on to the next one, would’ve been nice to see some family moments. Crazy fun trilogy.

Loved it

Great end to the rabies and gorgon dust mystery, with the beloved Bailey and Sam. So much sadness and anger, the villain caused so much heartache. But Bailey keeps things from getting too down with her Calamity Queen personality. I hope we get a peek at their kids and menagerie in future cameos.

2023 bk 53 - I greatly enjoyed the return to Bailey and Quinn. This book had one of the best 'flows' of story of the Magical Romantic Comedies in my humble opinion. I love seeing the Cindercorn in action.

I love Bailey and Quinn. Their stories leave me with a smile and a wish for people to be as nice, caring and fruity as she is. I have no idea how many times I've read and listened to the audio books, but I just can't get enough. Thank you RJ Blain for writing such amazing stories!

On a side note, I read the note by the author at the end of this book and was saddened to read people critizing her other books as 'not like this series'. To all readers, be mindful of what you write and criticize. All books are made to be enjoyed and I'm grateful to authors who write a variety of stories in different genres.

To RJ Blain, please don't let the shallowness of others keep you from writing whatever you want. There are people like me who live for your imagination. I'm not great with following up with reviews and posting on blogs, but I read and listen to audio books as often as I can. I work, so I can buy books. No joke. It's authors like you that help me cope with reality. So, keep up the good work and know there are people who will enjoy your work no matter what type of book you write. Thank you for all your hard work!

A good end to Bailey and Quinn

I liked this story a lot. It summed up most of the plot points left from the last two books, though a few remain. This author is very prone to bringing up things and then never resolving them. If you’re wondering where Bailey’s coworkers went during that 18hr shift at the coffee shop in the first book, don’t look for it to be resolved here. Although it was mentioned several times in this book we never find out the reason.

Overall I really liked the storey and I recommend reading the others in this series about Bailey and Quinn.

That said, the end note where the author complains about readers was a massive turn off. I likely won’t be buying anymore of her books. Unfinished plot lines in otherwise very good books drive me crazy, and complaining about bad reviews is in such poor taste I just can’t any more.

This was pretty disappointing.

It just seemed like it dragged on forever without actually getting anywhere. Like the dream where you're running towards the door, and it keeps getting farther and farther away.

Also, the number of times the word"doohickey" was used drove me crazy. 96 times it was used. And sometimes 4 times on 1 page. I know this author does a lot of repetition, but it just seems like she's taken it too far in the last few books. What makes it worse is now I'm too apprehensive to read the rest of the series because I really don't want to deal with that again.

This book is a dumpster fire. I don’t know what happened between the first (brilliantly crafted) and third books in the Bailey & Quinn-centric books, but the author appears to have forgotten how to write dialogue and what was funny/interesting/clever/compelling about her characters and become obsessed with shopping montages.

Bailey and Sam’s adventure continues with some of the back story we’ve pieced together from other novels fleshed out here.

This is the last book of the Bailey and Quinn trilogy (playing With Fire, Burn Baby Burn, and The Flame Game) in the Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) series, and it wraps up the remaining loose ends. The rest of the bad guys finally meet their just desserts, with plenty of adventures along the way. I’ve really enjoyed these books, especially seeing how much stronger and self-confident Bailey has gotten. The crazy extended families on both sides lend plenty of humor.

R. J. Blain’s books, and those written under her other pen names (Susan Copperfield and Bernadette Franklin) are my go-to happy place. Whether the somewhat lighter romantic comedies or the more serious themed books, they all have a delightful mix of humor and more serious social issues. She writes a darned good story, and her books check all the boxes for me. The humor, whether a light touch or scattered thick on the ground, makes the doses of reality and serious thinking pretty palatable. Her books are also very re-readable, which is a sign of a good author, and from me a great compliment as I don’t often re-read books. If you’ve only read the Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) books, I encourage you to try some of the others. My favorites are too numerous to name and include most of the list.

What I am grateful for

I am grateful that Bailey’s story showed up just in time for me to have a great read for Thanksgiving. The story was wonderful, fast paced and the conversations did not disappoint.
I also read all the authors notes at the end of the book. I am so sorry that some people don’t realize that it’s okay to connect to some types of stories and not others, even if written by the same author. That’s just life and not either person’s “fault “ just as you can have two pumpkin pies made by two different people and like one and not the other. I would hope they would not stand there and disparage the baker of the other pie....how rude.
My son writes (not published yet as the end keeps escaping him) but as his reader I know how much effort and time go into your work. Please know how grateful I am for all your stories (I read and reread) your R.J. Blain an Susan Copperfield series. They have gotten me through a bone marrow transplant and chemo with a smile on my face.
Thank you.

I found this series about a year ago and I am so happy that I did because I love them.
I have read a few of R.J. Blains books, and not just the ones in this series, and so far I have liked them all. I also enjoyed her books under her pen names Susan Copperfeild and Bernadette Franklin.

I like this series because the books are fun and funny but tackle some more serious issues at the same time.
I love some of the things the characters come out with and how they all interact with each other.
I also like that I can just let go and enjoy the story without taking it too seriously. While the characters do face some serious issues, being how they are treated or how they treat themselves, it is great follow them along their journey in this magical world and see how they learn from and overcome it all.

I love Bailey and Sam and it was great to go back to their world for one last adventure and I can see myself rereading all three of Bailey and Sam’s stories one after the other in the near future.

Great Conclusion to a Fantastic Series Within a Series!

I REALLY enjoy ALL of R. J. Blain’s books and series, but this series within a series is top notch and my favorite. With cindercorns, crazy family trees, Devils and Angels, everything supernatural and interesting mysteries, what’s not to love? These books, of which this is the conclusion, are laugh out loud PRICELESS! They are well written, have great character development, fascinating world building and more interesting paranormals than you could shake TEN sticks at! While you can read the other books in this overarching series as standalones in any order (and I would highly recommend reading the others, or any of her other books, for that matter), I would strongly suggest reading the 4 books in this series within a series, in order, as they are really one long, SERIOUSLY entertaining story, broken into smaller volumes. I enjoyed every minute of reading these books, and couldn’t recommend them more highly! Do yourself a favor and read them. You absolutely won’t regret it. Happy reading!

So much for sleeping...

First, if you haven't read "Playing with Fire", book one, or "Burn Baby Burn", book two, stop. Find those two books and read them first. Ideally, you also want to read "Whatever for Hire" and "Grave Humor" and possibly "A Chip on Her Shoulder" for more background. And then consider the rest of the series because, well, they're just that much fun. We pick up where we left off, with Bailey and Quinn in Vegas, getting married for a second time, with the dress, all the family and friends, gorgon, human, and divine. A good time is had by all, in many different ways. But Bailey and Quinn have one more task hanging over their heads before starting their new positions in Manhattan. Not being the sort to stay idle for long, Bailey starts investigating the issue discovered in BBB, but really started with (and before) PWF. They get more than they bargained for, and so do we.

Probably better read after rereading the previous two

I jumped right into reading this one without rereading the previous two, which left the first bit of zaniness of character dialogue a bit slow paced to me.
I love RJ Blain’s writing style, humor and characters. There may be a few things that all or most of her books contain that I’m getting burnt out on, but I keep reading anyway because between the slightly excessive fixing of low self esteem (only because it is in almost every book, and I don’t suffer from that particular issue the same way as the characters), and the many many many hospitalizations, there are truly heartwarming stories that touch on real issues.
Admittedly, some of the best humorous parts are in or about the self esteem fixing and hospitalizations, so.....
Still worth reading and if they get too repetitive for me, skimming is a skill I possess.

Good story!

I've enjoyed the stories about Bailey, Quinn, and the wild cast of characters that come with, whether relative or friend. With family members ranging from Egyptian gods to archangels and Satan himself, I can only imagine the spreadsheet size involved for this poor author to simply keep track of family trees! Her writing makes it easy to visualize the stories, and possibly my favorite laugh out loud is that silly cindercorn doing the worm on her back, hooves in the air, while covered in sparkly pink neutralizer. The author also clearly makes us feel how much Sam loves Bailey. Well done! I applaud the author's letter to her readers at the end of the book. It's difficult for me to believe people would act like that but it's pretty much daily I'm amazed and appalled by things people do. I've got so many books waiting and unfortunately, I've found sleep is a necessity, so it's time to pick a new book!

Flame game

I loved this whole series. I don't normally but books because I have Kindle unlimited. I got the first book of this series when it was free and I had to buy the other 2. It's a great read. I loved every minute of it and it was well worth the money spent. Even though it's a rom com, it is so much more. The main character has bad self esteem issues and they are addressed through the while series, while also showing the slow but sure way she is working on them by being surrounded by people who love her and help her find out who she is. It's also dark in a way. The villains are truly horrible people. Yes, I would love to have another book, but I also understand why this is the last one with this couple. They've gotten their happy ever after. I can't imagine what it would take to write another novel to incorporate the menagerie that's going on plus adding in the additional work. It's a fantastic series.

Happily Ever After

I am so glad everyone's favorite Cindercorn is finally beginning to realize her worth. Bailey has grown so much as a character, and she very much deserves her happily ever after. It may have come after some hard times and dark experiences but she managed to come out more confident and stronger than ever. Quinn and Bailey work so well together, becoming the mortar to hold the other's weaknesses together.

While I will be sad that no more books will be focused on Bailey and Quinn, they deserve to raise their family (and various dohickies) on peace.

While there is comedy, don't let that overshadow the serious issues R.J. Blain writes about. Look beyond the laughs and think about the world we live in and how society sees certain topics.

I look forward to more of R. J. Blain's books.

As much as i love the crazy beautiful condercorn and the nice and hot Gorgon, the story simply dragged on and on. Every time I tried to finish the book, it put me right to sleep.

It would have made a great short story. And reading it right after "A chip on her shoulder" makes pale in comparison.

And the word Doohickey is extremely cringeworthy and has been overused a lot. Now spots was adorable, Doohickey is not. 😞

And what's with the incessant pet adoption and kids. I gues they have a lot of relatives that could help take care of those and lot of money, but if they keep it up they are going to run out and not be able to take care of the babies.

The book should have showed Bailey interacting with Kids. For a woman who seems to love children so much, there hasn't been in scene in the books where she has talked to them? That would have been interesting to read.

More Cindercorns! Yea!

Apparently, this is the 3rd & last of the Bailey & Sam duo books.
While I'm kind of sad about that, I can understand. I enjoyed these books between my other reading for work.

I have enjoyed the snarky banter between the characters. I wish there had been a bit more fleshing out of the "why" behind the attacks. It was enough to be plausible and answer the basic questions. (I don't remember finding out who warned off the rest of the coffee shop employees in the first attack.)

Thanks to the author for writing a solid set of entertaining characters. The ideas of inclusiveness for beings that are "other" was not lost. I hope you continue in this genre when it is fun for you to write.

Yep, it's a good one

So this is the 3rd & last Bailey & Quinn book and I'm completely ok with that. Really enjoyed getting immersed in their storyline again that I had to read the first two before I started this one. Highly recommend it and the first is ine of my favorite books and it will catch you up. LUCY is in here! A LOT! So if you don't already have it go back and get A Chip On Her Shoulder after this. That one you can read afterwards and be ok.
I also really enjoy RJs alter-ego (?) Susan Copperfield. Her Royal States series, while not Mag Rom Com, is SO good. Darker-ish but still paranormal, almost fantasy adventure for some of them, but good.

Extraordinarily magical!

I highly recommend this fantastic book, and the series in which it is, to readers who love well written, hilarious, Heartwarming, paranormal fiction with compassionate awareness of very serious problems in our world.
PS
To R. J. Blain: I think these books are especially needed when the world is turned upside down and inside out due to a worldwide virus. They give us areas in to laugh, to feel a connection with others thru a shared experience, while creatures my a safe way to do so. This is a great accomplishment, and I hope patients who are isolated from their families and friends can find such treasures to brighten their days too. Thank you.

A satisfying end to the trilogy. I’ve loved watching Bailey and Quinn come together and their relationship grow over the course of the trilogy (Playing With Fire, Burn Baby Burn). Bailey’s character development has been handled with care and I love how she’s grown into who her own. She’s still outrageous and over the top but that makes her fun to read. I’d love to be invited to a family dinner with her and Sam, the whelps, twin terrors, assorted divines and her menagerie of pets. I’m happy we’ll see peeks of their lives in the occasional cameo in future stories.

GREAT BOOK!!!

I LOVE reading RJ Blain books! She has such a variety of writing styles and this book is a part of one series/style. This is another hysterically funny book, but her others are just as good but different. She writes under other names and those books are just as amazing as this one is. I never get tired of reading her books and rereading them as well. I own some on Nook, some on Kindle as well as on Audible. You can't go wrong finding something you will like by this author!!

A fitting finish to a series within a series

So, this is the final story about Bailey and Sam, and what a fitting end of HEA. It ties all of the threads from the previous books together in a nice bow. I really loved it, and will probably buy it again if it’s made into audio. These books are so nicely detailed that they are great on audio too. I love them all, just like I love the rest of what this author writes.
I can warmly recommend this to people who like dark humor, action and well developed interesting characters.

Great book to close the Quinns story

This is the 3rd book of the calamity queen and her doohicky. I fell in love with this author when i read the first book about the Quinns. This series is by far my favorite but her other books and pen names are just as great. If you love sarcasm, destruction and an amazing couple these books are for you. Both families are crazy which makes it better. I can't wait to see what she writes next and see what her characters that I love do next!

By and large, one can read this series in any order. Luckily enough, I started with Sam and Bailey's first appearance, discovered there was a sequel, and then another sequel after that. Sadly, the author says there won't be any more stories starring these two.

Authors have, however, been known to change their minds, so I haven't given up all hope.

Someone famous said "dying is easy; comedy is hard." Comedy is, indeed hard. At least, good comedy is. And Blain writes good comedy.
