Maverick: I haven't been back to Rabbit Island, South Carolina, since my parents died and my grandmother, Mimi, rejected me. I'm only returning now to attend her funeral and sell an estate I never wanted. But the moment I step foot on the island and fall into Beau’s arms, I realize it might not be so easy to say goodbye after all.
Beau Talmadge was always the boy next door, but now he’s no longer a kid. The man is hot as hell and pushes all my buttons in the very best way. I'm supposed to leave in a week. Sell everything, close the door on my past, and walk away forever. So why am I letting myself fall for someone who lives thousands of miles away? And how the hell am I going to break it off when it's time to go?
“That I’d come back.”
Beau: It took one short summer to fall in love with Maverick Mitchell and fifteen long years to forget him when he left. I’d never expected to see him again, but when he shows up at Mimi’s funeral looking lost and lonely I can’t resist doing anything I can to comfort him. Falling into bed with Maverick is easy and the nights we spend together are as hot and steamy as a South Carolina thunderstorm.
I know it's not smart. I know it's not what he planned. But dammit, Mav belongs in my arms, in my bed, and in my life. So how the hell do I get him to stay?
“Took you long enough.”
Fair warning: Moving Maverick is a 73k word gay romance novel featuring sweet tea vodka, fancy salt and pepper shakers, guys catching crabs (not that kind), Aunt Tilly with a knife, and multiple detailed instances of man parts touching.
Moving Maverick is the fifth book in the best-selling Made Marian series. It can be read on its own but is much more fun read as part of the series. The series begins with Borrowing Blue and each book follows a Marian brother's search for his HEA.
I write M/M romance with humor, heart, and heat. Check out my backlist here on GR for a selection of series and standalone or visit www.LucyLennox.com!
I only keep a small list of my very favorite books and series in my bookshelf here. I read A LOT and it's hard to keep the list updated!
This story and I got off to a rocky start, to say the least. At the beginning there, it was a simple case of it’s me and not you, particularly when it came to the describing of pre-story events that led to Maverick becoming a Marian in the first place. My issues stemmed from my strong opinions relating to the how and why of Maverick’s adoption, but I truly hope for other reader’s these issues won’t impact their overall enjoyment the way I know they impacted mine.
When this story begins, Maverick, the second adopted son in the large and lovable Marian clan, heads to Rabbit Island, South Carolina, where his estranged biological grandmother has recently passed away, leaving Maverick with a lofty inheritance, including historical real-estate which he now has to sort through before he can return to his regularly scheduled life in San Francisco.
On his return to Rabbit Island, Mave reconnects with his childhood bestie, Beau, with the two very, very quickly establishing a physical relationship which unintentionally, but swiftly, becomes more meaningful than either of them bargained for.
Mave and Beau just click – always have – but a relationship between the two seems unrealistic to both of them, with each man set in his ways and happily living a full life on opposite sides of the country. Adding to the issues of distance are complicated feelings and misconceptions about events from the past, specifically the actual reasons why Maverick was sent away by his gran when his parents died all those years ago.
Together, Mave and Beau face some hard truths, accept some new realities, and ultimately discover that big changes and worthwhile compromises might just be a necessary sacrifice if true love and a happy future is what they wish for themselves.
This all sounds pretty good, and it was to a point. I enjoyed the romance and the passion between Beau and Mave, especially since they had a shared history as childhood best-friends, having missed each other terribly since they were separated as tweens (at least from Beau’s side of things). Although, I do wish there had been more of a build-up in their re-established friendship before they got down and dirty – the rush of it all kind of diminished how epic the feels could have been, in my opinion.
I also enjoyed the (predominant) Rabbit Island setting, with the small coastal town environment and the close-knit community feel this place had going for it. However – and it’s a big however – I couldn’t stand the reactions people were having towards Maverick when he returned home for his gran’s funeral. They were all outwardly lovely, don’t get me wrong, but everyone kept calling him by his biological surname and asking him where he’d been and kept commenting on how great his dear gran was, blah blah blah. I’m sorry, where did these people think Mave had been since the summer he was 12?!? Did they think he’d packed himself up and shipped himself off into the foster system by his own accord? I was enraged that not one single person, Beau included, even asked what happened or why, instead they all just crapped on about what a saint old gran was, like the woman hadn’t abandoned Mave at the most devastating point in his life. And before anyone says, oh wait, Meags, what about the reasons why granny dearest gave Mave up!? To which I just want to say, NOPE. I don’t care how good her intentions were or how she thought she was doing what was best, I simply didn’t agree with her actions and therefore I struggled with the entire underlying situation that this story sat upon.
I got all rage-monster there and I apologise, because other than those gran-related issues I actually did enjoy the rest of this story, particularly during the second half.
So, I guess this has been my least favourite of the Made Marian books to date, but I have crazy high hopes for baby brother Dante’s story and eagerly look forward to digging into that one.

Audio Edition:
As always, Michael Pauley’s narration was exceptional. Even when I was struggling with aspects of the story, all I could think was “thank god for this guy!!” He will forever be synonymous with Lucy Lennox’s characters in my mind and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The sweet HEA ending tried to make up for a lot, but I just couldn't overcome the anger I felt for most of the first half, or the rage I felt at learning the "reason" why Maverick's grandmother Mimi refused to take custody of Mav when his parents died.
This just did not work for me.
I usually really enjoy Michael Pauley's narration, but I didn't this time around. It was mainly two things:
The first is technical - there were numerous audio quality issues when the sound kept fading in and out, which were pretty annoying throughout.
The second is a personal thing - I would have preferred the character voices Pauley uses for Beau and Maverick be switched. It's a weird personal thing, but I feel like that would have absolutely made it better. But, like I said, that's a personal issue and has nothing to do with how Pauley performs. He performs well.
But in the end, I didn't like the story, and it would have taken platinum level narration to get me over that. There was just so much I hated in this.
However, because I don't like to ruin everybody's good time just because I didn't like something, I'm going to put my rant under spoiler tags. Feel free to dismiss it all and enjoy the story for yourself.
There were some good things about the story, they just couldn't mitigate the rest for me. But as they say, there's a hat for every head and I seem to be in the minority with my dislike of the story, perhaps you may find it to your liking. Good luck and bless your hearts!

Moving Maverick is book five in the Made Marian series. I am so in love with this series and this book was just amazing. Maybe even one of my favorites. Beau and Maverick’s love just poured off the pages. The whole book made my heart so happy.
Beau Talmadge is twenty eight years old and is a general contractor on a tiny island in South Carolina. He’s lived most of his life on Rabbit Island and couldn’t picture his life anywhere else. When someone very dear to his heart passes away, his childhood best friend come back for the funeral. Beau soon realizes that his life is never going to be the same again.
Maverick Marian is twenty nine years old. He lost his biological parents when he was young and he eventually was adopted by the Marian family. He’s had a good life with them and loves them all dearly. Mav is a veterinarian, like his mother and sister. When he receives news that his biological grandmother, whom he hasn’t seen in fifteen years, passed away, and that he is the only relative that will inherit the estate, he needs to return to Rabbit Island to take care of the legalities. The first person he sees is his childhood best friend, Beau.
Watching these two reconnect after fifteen years apart was a beautiful thing. Their childhood friendship quickly changed to an adult physical connection that neither of them had ever experienced with anyone else before. They were perfect together, both in and out of the bedroom. They laughed, played and loved. But soon it was time for Beau to return home to California and his life.
I loved everything about this book. It made me smile, giggle, sigh and swoon. There was no unnecessary angst or issues between them. They openly communicated which made this book even more amazing. Their connection, their chemistry, was off the charts. There was a little bit of a surprise in the ending. I didn’t expect it anyway. And the epilogue was perfection. I don’t think there was a single thing I didn’t like about this book. Now I’m on to book six, Delivering Dante. I don’t know much about him yet so I’m super excited to get to know him.
When a new Marian family story is released it feels like a holiday - a guaranteed joyful, loving reading day. This story, like the others is a true love story involving two men, in this case two men who were best friends during the summers of their childhood, until their mid teen years. Now, I'll admit that Maverick is pretty set in his ways and not entirely loveable in the beginning. He can be funny as heck but so darned closed in. Beau, his childhood bestie, has all the charisma that Mav appears to lack and Beau has memories of the Maverick that he loved as a teen and he has a plan. Watch out for the little rabbit carvings throughout the island....
This is primarily the story of Maverick Mitchell who was adopted into the Marian family after he lost his parents as a young teenager. He has many fond memories of time spent with his grandmother on the beach at Rabbit Island, South Carolina during his childhood and never understood, when his parents died unexpectedly, why Mimi refused to take him in. She let him go to a foster home and he never spoke to her again. Ever. Now, Mav is called to South Carolina to deal with his inheritance following his grandmother's death. She abandoned him when he needed her, when his parent's died and he doesn't need anything from her now. Maverick has not been successful in love, not romantic love and certainly his grandmother didn't love him....or did she?
There is perhaps less of the Marian family in this story than some others but the humor that you found in the earlier Marian stories is here. Mav is a collector of salt shaker sets and the dialogue about specific shakers is chill.
I love this author, the series, the covers and most of all the love.
I really tried, but I just couldn't get into this one. I didn't feel any connection with the MC's. Maybe I will give it another try at a later date. It's sad really, because I liked the other books in this series, especially book 1. Maybe Maverick is just not my kind of guy...who knows. I am still gonna try Dante's book when it comes out..perhaps I will like him better ;)
Not gonna rate this one because I stopped at 45% and if I don't finish... I usually don't rate either.
I’ve really enjoyed every book in this series so far - but this one missed the mark for me.
The beginning felt like I was missing some backstory and it felt like I started a story that was already in progress and missed the beginning. Without knowing the backstory, the second chance reunion felt out of nowhere and insta-love.
Also - Mimi was really the worst. Everyone in town painted her like she was the best lady in town but I thought she sounded awful.
I did like the end though. The old lady trio didn’t bother me in this book at all either. Loved the family coming together.
I decided to DNF this one at 25% because it just wasn’t for me… 2 stars for the things I read so far, and I have a feeling that it would be even lower if I continued reading… I found a perfect review that captures my anger and frustration over this book, so I will leave the link for you right now
not gonna lie, this makes me sad, cause I really enjoyed the first three books in this series, and more or less tolerated the fourth one…
disclaimer until further notice, I will be adding this little disclaimer at the end of all my reviews… without boring you with unnecessary details I will say this… I’ve been in a writing slump for a while now… it’s happened before, but usually didn’t last very long… it’s connected to a lot of different things in my life, but all those details are personal so I won’t get into them right now… this time unfortunately it’s been already six weeks and it doesn't look like it’s gonna change anytime soon… in all this time I was unable to sit down and write reviews for the books I’ve been reading… and I don’t want to wait any longer, cause I already accumulated quite a few to do… so going forward I will be just writing a very short ones… with maybe an exception here and there if I feel like it ;) I don't want to put pressure on myself to write long and detailed reviews that I used to do for the longest time… instead I will try and add some links to other reviews here on Goodreads if I see ones that I feel share my thoughts and opinions on the stories I read… in the meantime I wish you all happy reading :)
This was cute enough, and thankfully, the crazy old ladies weren't around as much in this one. However, I had major issues with poor Maverick's history. His parents were killed in a car crash when he was 13, and although terribly wealthy, and they seemed to be close, and she's often referred to as "a saint" by the townspeople, Mav's grandmother not only didn't choose to raise him herself, she gave no explanations, and never contacted him again! She left a poor, orphaned teenager alone, to be raised by foster parents. We did finally find out why, near the end of the story, but I found her reasoning to be utter bullshit.
I also hated the way the townspeople seemed to react to Maverick when he came home to settle her estate. They acted almost like he'd left her, not the other way around, and like he owed them something. Or like he was a gold digger, just there to get his claws into her estate. It just pissed me off.
I did like Maverick and Beau, but I thought they jumped into sex WAY too fast. There was no UST at all. They meet for the first time as adults, after being best friends as kids, and are already getting off together the next day. What follows, for me anyway, was too much sex and not enough getting to know each other as adults. Fifteen years have gone by, neither has any idea about the men they have become, but that doesn't seem to matter.
It just didn't really work for me, so I'm rating this 2.5 stars, bumped up, although it could really have gone either way for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
SPOILERS AHEAD I'm soooooo DISAPpOINTED!!!!!! DNF at 25%. It would be a 0 stars if I could. Everything started great: Maverick is yummy, Beau too. Even though I couldn't understand how Mimi would be so great for everybody but her grandson, I was willing to keep reading to discover it. But then the lying started. I hate it when they try to manipulate me and after fucking and hearing something that he does not agree with, Beau starts doing exactly that. Not only tries to manipulate Maverick, but also plans to do it with the help of his best friend, Maggie. So my inner self started rebelling and I started to wish that Maverick sells everything fast and goes back to his real family, whom I know and love so much. I stopped reading when Beau lies to the realtor and to Maverick once again for his own purposes.
I'm so disappointed right now. The four previous books had been sooo good. I know everybody is loving it, but I can't.
Ahh, Maverick, I enjoyed the book overall but I felt it kind of dragged just a bit and I was sad about that. I liked both characters I think they were perfect for each other I did with Beau spoke up a little more about what he wanted I kind of felt like he expected Maverick to just know.
For everyone to then accept Maverick into the town that was sweet and I enjoyed the small town aspect of this story. I guess I just wanted a more realistic theme between the two men like he was just supposed to give up his life and move. I don’t know..
But like I said it was a good book I just wanted something more.
The narration again he becoming a narrator I will seek out again.
This was book 5 in the "Made Marian" series. Maverick Mitchell Marian was adopted by the Marian after his parents were killed in a car accident and his grandmother refuse to take him in. When his grandmother dies he goes back to Rabbit Island, South Carolina to attend her funeral and meets up with his old friend Beau Talmadge who he took care of and lived with her. Maverick relives all the hurt that was caused to him when his grandma didn't let him come live with her turns out she had a good reason she had ALS she was rich and owned a lot of land in which he wanted to sell. Maverick has a really big heart he donated a lot of the money he got from his grandma to the shelter that helped him. I really liked these two but they had a problem one lived on the East coast and one lived on the West coast. These two took their time falling in love this also introduced someone new Haywood who was in the closet he decides to move to San Fran to get a new start after he finally came out. The old ladies in this series are so funny and they were at it again in this book they went to Rabbit Island and Aunt Tilly hooked up with the old doctor in the town. I also liked how the family made Beau feel right at home when he went to visit Maverick in S.F considering how his own father treated him I really felt bad for him. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. This was my second time and I listened to it the narrator was really good.
I enjoyed it. It was my first book by this author. It was kind of meh but not necessarily bad. The writing was fun and easy to follow. Will read more from Lucy Lennox in the future.
"Moving Maverick" was cute and fun. I had a good time reading this book. But then came the grandma disaster. Mimi was a selfish, horrible bi*ch. I couldn't tolerate all the melodrama sorrouding this disgusting character. And the manipulation!!! Okay, enough. Ruined the good first impression I had.
A sweet read but very slow ! For the first 70% this really dragged for me and I struggled with finding my reading zone.... however it was nice when things started to involve the Marians. Not sure about this one, it wasn't my fav in the series but I hope others love it
Pretty good, went in with low expectations and it was better than I thought.
I do wish for less sexy times and more conversation…but that’s a theme for this series haha
Beau and Maverick were cute together, I do think that them having that crazy lust filled reunion after 15 years of no talking isn’t as believable as Lucy Lennox was thinking but I let it go hah gotta suspend reality in her books!
I am excited to see Dante’s book he’s always been on the outskirts of this family but he’s always intrigued me.
I’m coming to believe it really doesn’t matter all that much how it happens, getting to watch a Marian boy fall in love is always going to be a wonderful thing. I think in Griff’s book I mentioned something about it not being as exciting as the others, I think after reading the next book in the series with the same vibe, the love story is what matters, again, no matter how it happens.
This was easy and very sweet.
I had a few issues with some of it. Personal type issues that didn’t weigh all that heavily and they really never took away the enjoyment of seeing Maverick and Beau find their happily ever after.
Overall, this gave me the same joy that I seem to get every single time I read one of these books.
Very enjoyable story. I'm loving these Marian family tales. And I hate to say it but it was nice to get away from the gang in California and have love find Maverick Marian on the East Coast, specifically in South Carolina.
He returns there after 15 years away when his grandmother dies and leaves her estate to him. The grandmother who would not take him in 13 years before when his parents died. Yes, the grandmother he resented for that. But who does he see upon his return? His bestie, Beau, and Beau is all grown up, smoking' hot, gay, and still in love with the Maverick he remembered.
So it doesn't take long for them to hit the sack, but it does take a few months for them to realize they can't be apart again. There's much more to this story than that simple summary and it ended on a nice high note.
4.50 Stars!! I really enjoyed this fifth installation in the Made Marian series. Moving Maverick is a really sweet and romantic read with a little angst and lots of humour to balance. Maverick and Beau are both complex and wonderful MC's and I loved the childhood best friends angle. The sexy times are smoking hot and the outside shower scenes just hilarious! ;) This is a wonderful addition to this addictive series. Highly recommend.
I really didn't like this one :-/ ... thoughts to come ...
************ Alright so I made it to book #5 ... I'm looking forward to this one being better [read: way more captivating than book #4 was for me]! I don't know if I'll continue onto book #6, just because Dante's story doesn't really entice me. BUT, if I do read book #6, then that one will be a Kindle Unlimited read!! We shall see. Anyway, here we go ...
East coast Beau and west coast Maverick, find out what matters most. Beau and Maverick knew each other in school. Maverick’s folks died and his Gran wouldn’t take him in, so he went to foster care, and got lucky when the Marion’s adopted him. That big family gave him love and strength. Beau was still in Florida all of this time. Now, in Fl. Gran died and left everything to Maverick. He and Beau reconnect immediately, then share stories and feelings. Hot sexy times are abundant. We get humor, crazy family, devoted folks and acceptance. The cute salt ‘n pepper shakers trading is very witty. Maverick is conflicted, wondering why Gran rejected him, east coast vs. west coast, decisions and more. It’s worth it to read this tale for the magnificent ending. I have read each book, plus every other series from the amazing Lucy Lennox. ENJOY !
Moving Maverick might be my new fave! Mav and Beau are just awesome together. Maverick heads back to Rabbit Island, South Carolina after his estranged grandma dies and leaves her home in the small ocean town and all its property to him. After he arrives, he finds out his best boyhood friend, Beau, has been taking care of the home for quite some time as his grandmother’s health deteriorated. Baffled that his grandma didn’t want him after his parents’ deaths, he certainly was taken back that Beau was very close to her. Their friendship blossoms once again, quickly becoming more. This was such a well-written story with all the feels and zany antics only the crazy Marian family can provide. I absolutely loved the descriptions of the coastal scenery—the house, the small town stores, crabbing, and so much more. Lucy Lennox NEVER disappoints.
I just love this series. A very sweet reunited love story. Beau and Mav were so cute together. I cared less for the townspeople, so judgemental and manipulative as a whole. But they ended being very minor aspects. I missed having the Marions play a big part, but enjoyed the little there was. I'm sad the brothers are almost all paired off. I'm gonna be so sad to finish the series.
Another good story about one of the last unattached Marian sons, Maverick. His grandmother in North Carolina has passed away, the grandmother who didn't take him in after his parents death. He spent many summers there as a kid and when he arrives to deal with the funeral and estate, he finds his childhood friend Beau. They were 13 the last time they saw each other and 15 years have passed.
The story pretty much covers the times Mav stays on the island and his and Beau's developing romance. There's a lot of southern island charm with a few colorful characters and a beloved old dog. It's a sweet romance, salted with humor and peppered with several hot encounters. Remember this sentence when you start reading! Like most of the stories, there's a healthy dose of sex scenes but the first encounter still struck me as too sudden and out of place. The story is told in alternating POV's, so I liked the format. I enjoy getting thoughts and reactions from both characters.
I was a bit let down by the answer to one of the questions about the grandmother as I thought it might be a more exciting or mysterious reason. Still, it was logical and tied up the thread that dangled through most of the story. I was pleased that there was not as much family interaction as in some previous stories. The inappropriate octogenarians were dragged in but seemed a little more toned down than they had been.
There's only Dante's story left from this family. He's being shown as quite troubled by something, so that should be interesting. There was an additional character from the island that, I'm making a wild guess, might indicate a new story or series. Recommended as a second-chance, friends to lovers romance.
I call bull. While I loves this series I must call bull for this book. I was also too upset about Maverick's situation to really enjoy the romance and I pretty much relied on speed reading just to get this book over with to know what BS excuse LL gave for Mimi abandoning a child. And it was not reasonable one. Mimi who owned a mansion and thus I assume had money had lots more options beside total abandonment of a child. The LEAST she could have done was set up a trust to support Maverick when he hit 18. The foster system is kind of fucked up and although he was lucky to meet the Marians he could have also ended up in a pedophile's home. I think the best she could've done is take him in and send him to boarding school or something so she didn't have to look at him. But she left him to the wolves. I just can't forgive that. The premise of this book is bull and I'm not as forgiving as Mav. I get LL wanted the dramatic effect, but you can't eat your cake and have it too. She can't have Mimi abandon a child and then be like, 'mimi loved him all along'. I at least expect better from LL. DNF 81%.
So I wrote a lengthy review on how much I loved this book and then my Kindle decided to crash on posting to Amazon so I'm not doing it all over again.
Loved the setting, loved the friendship, loved the humour, loved the shaker sets, loved the sex, loved the lack of over dramatic angst, loved the reduction in old lady inappropriate comments, loved the epilogue.
I think I'm done with this series for a long while. The magic of the first couple of books has worn off for me. It's not good or bad, just more of the same.
Moving Maverick is a fun, friends to lovers story full of small town hijinks and reconnection for Maverick and Beau.
Maverick Marian is called back to Rabbit Island, South Carolina when his grandmother dies since he’s the sole heir to her home and small fortune. Going back is harder than he expected, especially since she rejected him after his parents died and left him to go into foster care in California. Mav has to face his feelings head-on when he arrives at the funeral and meets his childhood best friend and all of the residents of Rabbit Island.
Beauregard (Beau) Talmadge has been living on Rabbit Island for years, working as a contractor and caretaker for Maverick’s grandmother’s estate and her live-in caregiver. Even though his father had big ambitions for him, Beau is happiest on the island and working with his hands. He was heartbroken when Maverick never returned to the island but made a life there that he could be happy with.
These two had an easy relationship, fueled by years of friendship during childhood, shared hobbies and a mutual sense of loss when Maverick stopped coming to Rabbit Island for the summers. They reconnect from the minute they lay eyes on each other at the funeral and the sparks between them can’t be ignored. Even when they were long distance for months, they came back together like none of it had even happened. They fit together in ways they never expected with a relationship born from friendship and some good old fashioned mutual pining.
I’m loving all of these Marians and their significant others - even though we saw less of them in this book, they still were such a big part of the story. Looking forward to reading more!
