Amanda Jensen travels to a romantic winter resort in the mountains for her younger sister’s wedding. When Amanda’s magazine employer in New York phones her to interview Brody Jones—a bad boy American ski legend currently on the comeback trail—Amanda reluctantly ducks out of the pre-wedding festivities to meet him.
Brody isn’t thrilled about his sponsor-required interview, either. Brody distrusts all journalists, and worse—he has a career-ending secret to hide.
But Amanda isn’t like any other journalist Brody has ever met. Maybe there’s magic in the mountain air, because something is definitely happening between them. Dare Brody hope…something worth risking?
As Amanda digs deeper into Brody’s sports hero past, all they share is put in jeopardy. Now they face an impossible choice: her career…or his.

Excellent story of forgiveness and redemption. Amanda had a story to write, and knew she could do it. She just had to find out the whole story. Brody had been burned by journalists before, and didn't want to talk to her. Both of them had trust issues to deal with, and it nearly destroyed their relationship. Once Amanda found out Brody's secret, she had to do two things: find a way to minimize the damage, and convince him to forgive himself. She also needed to come to terms with her relationship with her father. This story brought me to tears several times, and kept me guessing as to how it would work out. I am looking forward to seeing another book from this writer.
As most of you know, I am not a huge lover of Harlequins. (I like to call them Harlies...☺). I find many of them too shallow, too formulaic, and too generic. I guess the Superromance series are longer, and because of that the author has more time for character and relationship development. Which is a good thing. Harlequin still loves the hard-to-believe totally convoluted plotlines, love-at-first sight premise, and chiseled six-pack-abs kind of hero (I'm right on board with that last one!).
Anyhoo, Something To Prove has a difficult-to-swallow plotline. It involves secrets and betrayal and ambition, etc etc. It's a typical Harly sort of thing, which I just over-looked, because I really don't give a crap about plot. I give a crap about characters. Characters make the story. Plot schmott. And the characters in this book are excellent. Parry does an amazing job creating a ski legend hero running scared, but dedicated to his team, a journalist heroine who is loyal and loving with her sister, and has been crushed by a son-of-a-bitch father, and plenty of interesting secondary characters who are not just thrown into the book for no good reason, but actually help to paint a fuller portrait of the leads. Most importantly, in spite of the crazy storyline and instant love/lust-at first sight, the chemistry between the hero and heroine is totally believable. Parry does an excellent job with their chemistry, growing trust for each other, and eventually, love.
This is Parry's debut novel, and I am impressed with her writing. Something To Prove is a rock-solid debut, which showcases her writing skills, talent with character development, and ability to create an emotional and satisfying story. What is also showcases is her potential. As I was reading, I felt myself wishing that the author could slip out of the Harly restraints for a bit, and let herself go. Outside of the formula, outside of the box. This new author has a lot of potential, and I hope she gets a chance to let it shine.
Grade: B

This was my first romance novel. It's not my usual genre. And while I don't think I'll be running out and reading romance books, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The characters and their situations were relatable and believable. The active romance was described tastefully and respectfully. Sometimes the interactions between the main characters felt a little uneven, but it was nothing that affected the story in a major way. This was a good experience for me and I won't hesitate to read the occasional romance novel from here on out.

I was enjoying this story immensely up until I lost my copy of the book and then I had a difficult time getting back into it because we no longer had snow on the ground! My problems obviously can't be solved by a HQN, I know.
Brody was terrific but Amanda took a while to get to like, in my opinion. She had so many 'daddy' issues, it was amazing she was a writer and not a stripper, lol. I just couldn't put myself in her shoes and sympathize or empathize with her and I tried. I really did.
I didn't really like the fact that one conversation with her sister (occurring at the end of the book) was all it took to change her life's perspective on her relationship with her dad and, of course, Brody. This annoyed me to pieces. I guess Dr. Phil moments do happen.. but still, I dunno.
Amanda Jensen discovers family and life can be complicated. Interesting story line wanting to keep you reading. Family is more important to some than others and can be difficult at times. As difficult as family can be, messy relationships can be even more complicated. Lies by omission can be just as devastating as intentional lies.
