Mystery, Montana obviously bypassed the whole #defundthepolice movement of 2020. Within the first couple of paragraphs of this outrageously and offensively stupid book, the sheriff is slapping handcuffs on heroine Shaye Griest for merely stating that she's looking for Chad Martin (the hero.) The sheriff may be looking out for Chad but, you know, handcuffing someone when they haven't done anything close to committing a crime is called false arrest and deprivation of liberty.

Then, only a chapter or so later, one of the deputies is beating the ever-loving fuck out of hero Chad Martin, apparently because he mistreated the deputy's sister romance-wise. It is never once fully elaborated on what Chad actually did to warrant an officer of the law delivering a beat-down that includes punches to the face and kicks to the ribs (!) and possibly more, but everyone in Mystery, Montana, including Chad's OWN FAMILY, stand idly by and reason that Chad had it coming.

WT-everloving-F???

Dear Ms Winters, NOBODY deserves a beating. May I repeat that: NOBODY, in the world EVER, has "a beating coming to them." ESPECIALLY NOT FROM AN OFFICER OF THE LAW!!! These events were so egregious and disgusting, and were made worse by all the characters' complicity in it, acceptance of it, and the fact that it's entirely ambiguous what Chad even did to "warrant" an unwarranted, brutal physical assault.

Even a good book, for me, would have trouble recovering from such revolting acts and attitudes, but everything in this book from that point onward is just as sloppy. Shaye has come to Mystery, Montana because she has cut ties with her father, the Algerian president who ordered the hit on her ex-fiance. She's hoping Chad Martin can help her out. He's hiding out from the Gray Wolves terrorist group that has hovered in the background through all the books,, who want the Martin family dead. Turns out Shaye has to dodge her father's minions, who want to kidnap her and bring her back to her father for safety (her father knows she wouldn't be safe hiding out with a family that terrorists want dead, go figure.)

Into this mess gets thrown an abandoned baby trope. Even though Shaye and Chad discuss the proper thing to do: calling police or child protection services, they decide to just take the baby along with them, because dang, he's just so cute and adorable!

FOR FUCK'S SAKE, YOU'RE ON THE RUN FROM TERRORISTS!!!!

The rest of the book just contains one nonsensical scenario after another. Hey, let's have sex in the gym, while not far away the family is keeping two terrorists hostage and torturing them for information! What could be more romantic and sexy than that, huh? Or how about Chad deciding the best thing to keep Shaye safe from terrorists and her father is to force her leave the ranch they're at and fend for herself. He actually seems surprised when she's captured.

To add insult to injury, the whole thing gets neatly wrapped up with one of the most insulting examples ever of a deus ex machina ending in which Zoey is able to provide their coordinates to a before-now-never-mentioned higher-up friend in the government, who is able to send in a fighter jet to conveniently blow all the antagonists to smithereens, along with, I'm presuming, the twenty-odd STEALTH operatives who were supposed to be guarding the property.

So, the plot was an F all across the board. How about the romance? Yeah, just check that earlier paragraph where I mentioned how Chad gets Shaye to leave the ranch, for her "safety", but without any protection whatsoever, when there are two powerful enemies after them. It made absolutely zero sense.

The best protective operation you can undertake is to stay far away from this alternately boring and insultingly stupid shitshow of a book.

Shaye had had enough of her powerful father and had to get away from him. She knew her friend Chad would help her so she went to Montana to find him. When she did, Chad and his family welcomed her but were concerned that she had been able to find them since they were in hiding from terrorists known as Gray Wolves.

When Chad and Shaye were being followed, they had to run. As they were about to leave, they found a baby on the ranch doorstep. Running was hard enough, but with a baby in tow! And who was after them? Was it her father's henchmen or the Gray Wolves?

I liked the characters, especially Chad's family. I was impressed by how easily they accepted the baby. It was funny that they suspected it was Chad's because he didn't have the best reputation. While I liked this book, I felt like I should have read the previous books to understand why Chad and his family were in hiding. There was enough information that I got the gist of why, but it was still a mystery to me

This final outing with the Martin siblings features my favorite of the bunch, Chad! He has brought some much-needed comic relief to the series, though I always knew he that he had a lot more depth to his feelings than it appeared on the surface. After his twin sister Trish was killed in the first book (‘Hidden Truth’) there has been a tinge of sadness to his humor though he tried to hide the extent of his grief from everyone one including his family. The only person who seems to understand him is Shaye who is mourning the loss of her husband Raj, and who was also a friend of Chad’s.

In addition to the heartbreak of Raj’s death, the knowledge that her father was responsible for his death drives Shaye to abandon her life as the daughter of the Algerian prime minister. She suspects he was also involved in her mother’s death years ago and has attempted to kill Chad as well, and knows that if she stays she would most likely be next. She decides to go find Chad in Montana knowing that he and his family run STEALTH and could provide protection from her father. As it turns out though Shaye has some moves of her own as the Martin’s cousin Wyatt (from ‘Ms. Calculation’) finds out to both of their chagrin! Regardless, he takes her to Dunrovin Ranch to find Chad who is having some difficulty of his own at an ugly Christmas sweater party. (You need the humor from the first few chapters to balance out the rest of the book!)

The story takes off quickly from there-a malfunctioning water heater indirectly leads to a murder, an abandoned baby, a sweet vacation home, gym sex and an explosion! Where else can you find this combination of events woven into a book?? This is why romantic suspense is my catnip, and Danica is a master of the genre! Again, while technically the books can be read as standalones I say plop your hiney down and read all the books one after the other for your Leap Day!

Oh and I kind of fibbed-while this is the last book in the series specifically dedicated to the Martin siblings, there will be more STEALTH books in the future, biggest of yays! That means I’m sure to see more of my fave Chad in the future!

Thank you as always to Danica for the review copy, though all opinions are my own!

Protective Operation by Danica Winters
Have enjoyed this series and this book can be read as a stand alone.
Book starts with brief description of the storyline, excerpt, acknowledgements, About the author, other works by the author, cast of characters (love this part).
Story starts out with Chad and he's helping the family with a fund raiser but he gets carried away with drinks and bad decisions. Gray Wolves are still after them...
Story also follows Shaye and she's left her family and her fiance is gone now thanks to her father and his thugs.
She needs help so she heads to go find Chad Martin. She just has a feeling of where he might be. He has been her big brother over the years.
Family welcomes her as she helps Chad recover from the fight. Before we know it they are being followed-not sure if by the goons of her family or the Gray Wolves after his family.
There's fun bantering also. They also no longer see each other as a sibling...
Action, adventure, romance, betrayal, revenge, travel and mystery. Add a very young child left on their doorstep into the mix and you got yourself a book that will keep you busy reading for several hours.
It all comes to a conclusion as the skies light up with the blasts. Who will survive this time?
Ends with excerpt from heartbroken by BJ Daniels at the end.
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Talk about a great ending to a series. Shaye has had to deal with her father since Zoye's story and it hasn't been easy. Danica does a excellent job of making the story flow from book to book. But leaving Chad for last made sense for he suffered the greatest loss. I love the action in this story and different twists in the plot. You never know who is after them next. It makes the story more interesting. What is also interesting is the way the story ends its interesting. Chad has a reputation to live down some is earned and some isn't. But what draws me to the story is the bond of family. Which means alot to see it. I look forward to Danica's next series. J

I really liked Protective Operation. A thrilling read with lots of action. I liked Shaye and Chad's story. The Stealth series and the Martin family has grown on me and I've liked getting to know them. The addition of the abandoned baby was a good mystery and I loved the explosive ending. I'm looking forward to reading more of this Authors work.

I give Protective Operation 4 stars for its thrilling read.
I would recommend this book to fans of Intrigue.

I have been looking forward to Shaye and Chad's story since I read "Her Assassin for Hire". This was a great romantic suspense, and we also get some answers to mysteries introduced earlier in the series. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Good Read

I enjoyed this story, not as well.as others, but it had a nice story line. I enjoyed the baby ,but would have liked to know who his parents were, why they allowed the child to be involved, etc. There were a lot of questions and not enough answer.....

We met Shayna in the last book and she is the perfect girl for Chad.

The ending was perfect.

Can they save an abandoned infant? Can they survive being on the run from terrorists?

Chad Martin and his family own STEALTH, a private government contracting company. He's always the one to bring joy and levity to any situation - until his past comes to haunt him in the form of a newborn. Is the child his, or being used as a tool to slow them down?

Shaye Geist is the daughter of a crooked prime minister who has become a victim of his wrath and temper.

Shaye tracks Chad to the wilds of Montana, seeking refuge from her father. Chad's also in hiding - from terrorists - the same terrorists who killed his twin sister. They are ready to run when they find an abandoned baby. Can they keep themselves and the baby safe? Enemies close in on all sides.

Thank you, Danica, for keeping me on the edge of my seat through another pulsating adventure. I'll be reading this again.
