I am still really enjoying this story and didn't want the book to end. Also, I'm happy to say we have more progress on all fronts!

This is by far my favorite book in this series! Questions are answered, relationships strengthed--and weakened. My shoulder muscles are aching from clenching and unclenching during different scenes. LOL!

First of all, I love the titles of all books in the series. They are all very unique and like the story, awesome.
Now there is nothing that will correctly explain my reaction while reading this book. I was anxious, excited, enraptured, engaged, in love with, scared, and surprised. Ayleth is one of the best protagonists and she is my favorite. This is one of the best series I have ever read. There's love, betrayal, adventure, suspense, mystery, and lots of action.
This book has everything to love. The writing is so descriptive that the words form pictures, very very clear pictures. I can see everything happening and it makes me want to go and see that world for real.
An awesome book in the series and I can't pick a favorite. Each book is special and awesome.
I love, love, love and just love this book.
The shades, senators, witches and finally the Dread Odile, this is all wrapped in a very good package. I want to know what the witch queen has planned for Ayleth and how Ayleth will fight everything she knows and then there is Terryn who has to deal with life altering changes. Hollis and Fendrel are my favorites and they were the ones who started this.
I'm so excited to read what happens next to all these beloved characters

This almost got 3 stars. There was just too much fighting and action and I know we have 2 more books of the same and I am worried I am going to get burnt out on the near death experiences. This one was great because of the 2 slow burn romances that happen. I was not happy at the end but I got to jump right into the next one so I was ok:}

Let me start off by saying I've been in a reading slump for the past month and a bit. For anyone who has been following my reviews of the Venatrix Chronicles it will come as no surprise to hear that I loved this installment! It may have broken the slump. We get fierce Ayleth and Loyal Laranta, handsome but somber Terryn and Love struck Gerard and minor spoiler and old friend shows up to join the fight.
This installment might be the best yet. We finally get some of the answers we've been looking for since meeting Ayleth and her mysterious missing memories. And don't worry, it's not a 'here's a tiny tease of Ayleth's past that just makes you pull your hair out wanting to know more.' No, this is a full on explanation of what's been going on these past years and who Ayleth is (though I still might pull my hair out wanting to know more and how it's all going to end). The line between friend and foe grows ever fainter however, and Ayleth ends up in a precarious position for the start of the next book. She's not only reeling from the revelations about her own past, but what it means for her future as well, and some of her hunt brothers and sisters are going all out for the final battle which may put more than just Ayleth's life in danger.
I'm so excited for Queen of Poison and Crown of Nightmares. If you haven't picked up this series yet, do yourself a favor and go get the first book, Daughter of Shades off Amazon. Amazing YA series.

I have no idea how Sylvia Mercedes manages to consistently write such engaging, exciting books and on such a fast timeframe! Yet again I powered through this book within 24hrs because I couldn't put it down!
Tears of dust is book 5 in the venatrix chronicles - one of my favorite series and actually up there with Nevernight in terms of thrilling, badass, dark fiction/gothic fantasy ❤
We're deep in the thick of the overall plot and there's a lot of reveals and action in this book (being careful to avoid spoilers) 🙈 I've been loving that the story has been showing more and more of the Crimson Devils and the "evil" characters because they are so intriguing and exciting to read about 😈
This book has a lot more action than romance compared to other books in the series but it fits perfectly and it takes nothing away from the plot, characters or overall enjoyment of the book 😍
Ayleth and Laranta are very reminiscent of Mia Corvere and her shadows (again being careful to avoid spoilers for that series 😆) relationship wise and while Ayleth is brash and badass like Mia they're on very different levels. Mia is a violent, stabby little bitch (that's why we love her 😂) and Ayleth is a calmer more considered/mellow character. Both women at equally dark and complex and wonderful but if you love Nevernight I have a strong feeling you will adore this series 🔥
Anyway. I'm obsessed. I love this series. I love these characters. I love this world. I love where the story is going. It's just fucking fantastic and more people need to be reading this.

Sooo good. This one kept me on the edge of my seat. The action was much better in this one in my opinion. I learned a lot more about each character, mainly Fendrel. I really wanted to like him but he’s a freaking asshole.
I finally got what I wanted when it came to Terryn and Ayleth. I love them together. My heart hurts for Terryn at the moment though. As well as Gerard. I hope they get a happy ending at the end of it all.

Ohhhhhhh yess.
I've enjoyed each of the Venatrix Chronicles, but this is the best yet - there have been all sorts of plates up spinning in the air for the last four books, and in this one they all start landing. Sylvia Mercedes deals out revelation after revelation, and each one hits the spot. All the questions you've had - who is Ayleth really? Where's Hollis? What are the witches trying to achieve? How long will it take Terryn to wash out all that starch and let his hair down a bit? - get answered in this instalment. Not one of them is a disappointment, and at least one moment is startlingly, beautifully numinous. It all sets up a final two books that I'm super excited about.

This book started with a bang . . . and kept on going with a bang. Seriously, this whole book was a climax. It want from bad to worse to worst. Which I knew would have to happen when I was given what I wanted in the opening chapters. So of course, I was going to have to pay for two moments of joy with a book of pain.
So, yeah: action non-stop while characters rose and fell and rose and fell all around. Ayleth's backstory really comes to the forefront, which was great to see and left me more surprised than I expected. And my boy Terryn really grew this book. And their bond really strengthened.
Fendrel, however, is definitely Terryn's foil in this book as he faces the brink of losing everything in a very different way than Terryn does. I don't agree with a lot of decisions that he makes, but I understand his mentality. Especially after he faces EXTREME Fendrel abuse that I do not approve of.
This is just scratching the surface of this book because is really a climax of the series so far as things take an irrevocable turn from the previous four books to lay the foundation of the last two books. Serious things go down. Secrets exposed. Characters coming back for some team action scenes. I see you, Hollis and Kephan!
Also, a note of warning about that ending. That was Jes Drew abuse.
Note to more sensitive readers: This book had some bad language, violence, horror elements, and just plain intensity.

This was definetly a sort of filler/set up book (if the shorter page count didn't make it obvious enough). But oh my, the secrets! The secrets all get revelaed...
Ayleth has been imprisoned in her room by Frendrel, after she just saved the Prince. Granted, she did fail at saving Lady Cerine, who had been taken by the witches, but surely she shouldn't be arrested when she is the main reason the Prince still lives?
The Phasmatrix Domina and a group of Evandarians have arrived at Dunloch, surely they are here to help rid Terryn of his curse? But they were summoned before it was discovered Terryn's curse was still active, so why are they here? Ayleth. Fendrel summoned them because of Ayleth. Not to commemorate her, but to damn her. Or save her in their eyes.
During the night they are preparing to deal with Ayleth however, Dunloch comes under attack. The witches are here. Not just the Phantomwitch and Warpwitch, but all the Crimson Devils. They are here for the secret that lies beneath Dunloch Castle.
Ayleth has more allies then she thinks, and for this night alone, Fendrel will hunt beside her, along with Terryn and Hollis (yes, Hollis!). Can they stop the Crimson Devils before they get what they came for? But what will the cost be? What secrets will be ousted? Whose relationships will crumble, and whose will rise?

Another thrilling read.
I hate that now I have to wait 2 months for book 6 & an additional 2 months for book 7. Ugh!
I'm sure they will be worth the wait.
I'm not sure but I do believe most series slow after the first few books. At least most that I've read. However, this one seems to pick up the pace. We do have more answers in this book. It is, however, another cliff-hanger. Now to begin the arduous journey of being patient!
Not as much gore in this one. Lots of violence. Still sprinkled with profanities. More witch's presence in this one. Lots of magic.

This is number five in the series and it is still the same high standard as the first four books. To pinch a tv-series title, this is absolutely fabulous. I refuse to give away any spoilers, but there's just so much information to absorb, and you enjoy doing so.
Ayleth finds out some secrets about her past, and there are answers to questions that have been hanging like Damocles' sword. The storyline is so clever, and you'll be surprised by the actions of one person in particular.
There's some sections in here that you'll actively cheer at. I suggest doing it in your head, not out loud like I did, or you'll get funny looks. This is thrilling, action-packed, and heartbreaking. A gut-wrenching, shocking, roller coaster ride of a tale, and it's WONDERFUL! I so admire the author's talents with imagination and wordplay. Honestly, you'll never regret reading this series. Actually you might, because you'll be spoiled by such strong characterisations and stories that nothing will stand up to this level of expression and emotion ever again.

Unbelievably Thrilling!
WOW! From beginning to end book 5 was intense, suspenseful and utterly thrilling! It was jaw dropping at times as the lies that were told for so long were revealed and hatred in others becomes even uglier. I was completely enthralled and could not put this down! Ayleth's story keeps getting better and better and there is no telling how this story is eventually going to end.
Ayleth is a force to be reckoned with. While many individuals are trying to keep her down and convince others that she is evil, Ayleth rises from the darkness to defend herself and those she fully believes in. Finally we get some answers as Ayleth uncovers the truth about her past.
So many different choices and deceptions are made at this point in the story throwing us readers off and keeping us guessing. Amazing story and absolutely phenomenal writing. I can't wait for the next book!

I am writing this review after I recieved an ARC copy per my request. This is my honest opinion on Tears of Dust.
Wow! Just wow! I'm not sure that anything I can ever write can do justice to this series so far. Sylvia weaves an intense tale of unique magic, intrigue and fantastic characters in this epic story.
This book really ramps up the action we've seen since the previous 4 books, bringing more characters, who we've heard of, to life and fleshing out a few others who have had slightly less page time before.
Ayleth and Terryn still take centre stage in this action packed instalment of the series and we discover a bit more of Ayleth's backstory.
I am in total awe of Sylvia and how well she sets out the little details, bringing them all in to the bigger whole and making it easy to imagine that you could be a fly on the wall inside the castle, watching all the action go down.
The only bad thing I can possibly say about this is that we have to wait until May for the next part! *sad face*

Each novel in this series just keeps getting better and better! I could not put this novel down! More secrets and true motives are revealed! The past comes back to haunt those who spread lies and untruths. Fendrel greatly surprised me in this novel, for is has become so much harder since the prequel to this series. His choices and deceptions will have a huge impact in this novel. Terryn comes into his own, realizing that all he has been taught about the Order and Shades in not necessarily true. He cares for Ayleth, and is torn by Fendrel's decisions. Ayleth will uncover the truth about her past and the lies that she was told. She will be angry and feel betrayed, but she knows her duty and she is the only one who can save them. Another character also returns in this novel to help Ayleth, but Ayleth does not know who to trust, for the secrets that were kept could destroy them all. Looking forward to the next novel in the series!

I've had dreams inspired by these books and couldn't wait for number 5; we're well into the plot and book 4 left the heroine in peril of either death or boredom. You'll have to read the book to see which one fells brave Ayleth! Potentially kidding.
This book hit me hard. Yes the mayhem of witches running wild made me occasionally short of breath. But the moral questions and quandaries being presented move these books into some of my favorites, I'm wrestling with things in real life and I think of Fendrel and wonder if I'm Fendrel and all that he is when I just want to be the nice dragon thing.
These books are great, I'm so addicted. When they're all out I'm going to take a night and read them alllll through all night long so I can hide under my sheets occasionally.

Absolutely fabulous as always. Each book gets better. The characters and plot work so perfectly together. Something for everyone.

February 19, 2020I read this novel as an ARC and what can I say, I was blown away. This series is constantly going above and beyond my expectations. The only things I can say about the story without giving anything away is Fendrel is a jerk, Ayleth and Terryn are awesome, and people will be having to face consequences.

Actual rating 4.5! The series is finally moving ahead with an exciting plot, plenty of twists, action, and a shocking ending. I was glad to see some of the characters finally progress, and while I wasn't really certain how to feel about some characters with their POVs, it did add another layer of complexity and understanding of the plot.
Ayleth and Terryn both finally grow as characters as everything they know crumbles around them. It still took a little longer than I hoped, but that is also the consequence of having so much indoctrination in their lives. I really, truly liked the twists and reveal of the villains and what was done to keep them in isolation. The action is solid, especially at the end, though I wish the plot moved a little faster as well.
All this said, I am still invested and wanting to know what happens next in the series. It is getting down to the wire after that shocking finale, and hopefully, the speed can be ramped up in the next two books!

This continues the adventures from the cliff hanger end of book 4. It is also an excellent book and it also ends with a cliffhanger but in between is a great deal of action, and intrigue. We learn more about past events leading up to the beginnings of the story. I received an ARC of the book.

Sooooo... I think this might be the best one of the series yet! I don't know what to say except it's a really really stellar read. The adventure continues and the unexpected happens. We finally have some answers and one character in particular evolves/makes a decision we've been anticipating. It's an action packed ride and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Wow I inhaled this book. This is an ARC review - tons and tons of action, betrayals (no spoilers), major plot point revelations. The pace grabs you and doesn’t let up all the way to the end. I have a bit of book hangover now, what on earth am I going to read next.

Another fabulous book, though I'll be honest it feels kinda like a filler book to catch us up on some history and backstory. Don't get me wrong, I think both are important and I like knowing the details, but I came away from this feeling almost like we left off in the same place we started.
This book takes place over the course of a day following 2 days after the end of the last book. Even though the majority of what happens happens basically in a single night, much of it's a doozy. Most of it is maddeningly frustrating and makes my heart hurt for Ayleth, Laranta, Terryn, and even Gerard to a degree. The Crimson Devils are back and more powerful than ever, and finally all the details surrounding the curse, Dread Odile, and Ayleth are revealed. And of course our beloved Fendrel (that's sarcasm by the way) is still out and about, manipulating all to his fanatic ideals and views. If ever I could throat punch a character he'd be at the top of my list right about now. Anyway, it leaves off on a cliff hanger much like many of the other books, so I'm happy I don't have to wait too long for the next release! This world, the characters, and the "magic" system is so well done that I'm in this until the very end.

I was lucky enough to get a AFC of this book. I've been reading a lot of books lately and realized that the writing in this book is way above and beyond many other authors. The story telling makes it hard to put it down. It took me about 3 days of reading to finish, mainly I couldn't hide away to read as much as I wanted. This book is much more action packed than the others. You feel so many emotions, anger, sadness and hope. There is no right or wrong just gray in this book. Like the characters I hoped to end up being good were kind of not good and those who were bad you question if they really are bad or just misguided. It was a great read and I can't wait to read the next book.

Finally. Thank you Sylvia. You finally gave us answers. You finally revealed the bulk of the mystery. I can breathe. My blood pressure is regulating to normal levels.
The revelation... I'm conflicted by relief of finally getting some truth and distaste for the manner it was delivered. Also the wolf-thing is kind of weird. But anyways. Yes, the bulk of the reveal was done in a jarring first-person POV monologue whilst the entire series has been in third-person. Interesting choice. I suppose it was meant to be Hollis just talking, but there are no quotations, even at the start of the chapter so it was a little confusing at first. We also don't get to see any reactions because of this monologue. It's pretty much an info dump. It would have served better to integrate the reveal into the story so the characters can react and we can see their emotions and thoughts. This way we get to see their values and get to know them better. Even better if we could have gotten it interwoven with the story so it wasn't all at once like it was but beggars cannot be choosers and I have been begging for the truth since like 3 books ago so it is what it is.
Some books do this funny thing that I can't decide if I like or not. It usually depends how relieved I am. But they make us work so hard to get to the true destiny of the character, and the character, after going through so much, readily accepts their destiny without much complaint. In this case, I was okay with it because if she argued and denied it, it would have been how many more books of avoiding the truth good lawd I could not have that. So thank you again Sylvia for making her obedient and logical when it matters.
The ending of this was so chaotic. So much went wrong. I was sitting there like why is this guy even here still?? End him! But no, of course not, we need a villain or two. But I really was like, y'all just take him out, it's okay.
This was the best book of the series so far. I am partial to the revelations I admit. The action scenes were good, a little muddled at some points, but I am reading all this late at night so maybe that's just me. The next 2 books are promising. I hope they do more showing than telling and we get more depth so I can attach myself to the characters for the finale.

This book was a book of revelation and worries. If you thought peace was coming you will be betrayed as much as I was.
My theory about the past of Ayleth was wrong and now I am anxious to just see my baby have some peace, what I think is a great ilusion
It shows beautifully their loyalty, with Gerard and Terryn being the highlight. Also the relationship of Laranta and Ayleth is amazing, and when we discover the meaning behind everything is awesome.
It's interesting how it shows how faith and what is taught for us can be terrible and just because of someone's thought it can influence so many people. Like Fendrel being blind for his faith and Terryn hurting himself because he always thought he was wrong all the time. It shows that fantasy can reflex our reality, we can make a parallel with the intolerants around the world.
I hated Fendrel so much, he is a villain that you don't know what to think because of such a stubbornness and craziness.
For the happiness of the romantics, we finally had our couple together, it was just wonderful and I need more.
I thought this reading was more tiring because had less hunts but also because it was bigger than the other books, but I still liked, I am just not used to read long series anymore, I miss the time I had time for it.
Finally, I hope all these characters I loved so much have some peace at least in the end, let's see in the next books.

I received an ARC to review before, and wow, she's done it again--I couldn't put this book down either!! It starts right where the last one left off (these are going to be great when they're all done and can be read one after the other) and we see Ayleth growing and changing in this book more than any other. We finally get some answers, and it just sets us all up for the next books (but there's definitely still some surprises in-store). The book is full of action and suspense until the very end!
I highly recommend this book and generally love the series (I think it's one you actually can't put down, I read the first books all in one day) and this continues to build on that momentum. I'm a huge fan of these awesome female heroines who kick butt and take names, and I absolutely adore Ayleth's shade. Sylvia Mercedes made so many good decisions with this book as we get those answers we desperately wanted but are still hooked at the end with a delicious cliffhanger. If you haven't read the series in a while, re-read and come to this book refreshed with all that's happened--you won't regret the re-read anyways!

Action and Hope Abound

I liked then hated then hoped then rejoiced then was encouraged to be left with a feeling of disgust at the end. Disgust that Fendrel manipulated events to his benefit, that the Golden Prince didn't even consider Ayleth for the role of Black Hood, that Hollis watched and Ayleth submitted to being bound in those iron chains. Next book, nobody gets time to rest or heal before they're off chasing after Odile and crew.
Great book for the most part, plenty of twists and turns and surprises not to mention the action. I'm glad this book gave more about Odile's origins as well as the information about her curse and countercurse. I don't remember from the other books the blood flinging and curses so that was different.
I don't believe that Terryn is dead but it also hope he finds a way back to Ayleth. Whatever they've been building up to this whole series finally saw some kisses but waiting for more. I wasn't entirely surprised at Ayleth's heritage but I can appreciate how that reveal was necessary and I also liked how the author told us right away instead of having to wait several more paragraphs and disasters later.

Each novel in this series just keeps getting better and better! I could not put this novel down! More secrets and true motives are revealed! The past comes back to haunt those who spread lies and untruths. Fendrel greatly surprised me in this novel, for is has become so much harder since the prequel to this series. His choices and deceptions will have a huge impact in this novel. Terryn comes into his own, realizing that all he has been taught about the Order and Shades in not necessarily true. He cares for Ayleth, and is torn by Fendrel's decisions. Ayleth will uncover the truth about her past and the lies that she was told. She will be angry and feel betrayed, but she knows her duty and she is the only one who can save them. Another character also returns in this novel to help Ayleth, but Ayleth does not know who to trust, for the secrets that were kept could destroy them all. Looking forward to the next novel in the series!
