Halfway through the story, it occurred to me that the male lead Changyi is like The Little Mermaid 🤣 Saved a princess, traded his tail for legs, entered the human world and from then on is unable to return to the sea lol... I also noticed that the C-ent industry really likes this author's novels. She's got at least 2 novels adapted into major dramas.

I didn't watch the drama but I'm a big fan of this author as her heroines are always so awesome and her romances are a good mix of angst and comedy. Those familiar with her works can rest assured that similar elements are in this novel. The heroine, Ji Yunhe, is very kind despite a tough and harsh upbringing. The theme of the story is freedom and Ji Yunhe's idea of freedom evolves as the story progresses. She goes from striving for freedom from any attachment to finally understanding that freedom means the freedom to choose. There is a melancholic tone to the novel because the main couple spend much of the novel in situations beyond their control while struggling with the tough hand that fate has dealt them. Most of the couples in the novel also exemplify the idea of being unable to let go. They find no freedom in love and are often trapped by their attachments.

There are moments of comedy and I liked the sisterhood between the female characters. The side characters (especially the brother, I forgot his name) are well-written with their own backgrounds and motivations as well.

The second half was melodramatic but I still loved it lol. The love interest reminded me a bit of Lan Wangji - taciturn, loyal, feeling deeply despite a stoic demeanor. It was touching how simply and purely he loved the heroine despite her seemingly repeated betrayals. I was RELIEVED that the two finally got some happy moments by the end.

I had checked out/skimmed the first few episodes of currently airing Chinese drama The Blue Whisper starring Dilraba and Ren Jialun, an adaptation of this novel. Here's a cool tidbit to the drama casting: the director and Dilraba were having a meal together, Dilraba mentions she's reading this novel 驭鲛记, they discuss it excitedly and then the director asks Dilraba if she would be interested in filming this project.

驭鲛记 was first published in 2019 by well-known successful Chinese web novelist 九鹭非香 Jiu Lu Fei Xiang (note this is a pen name as with most web novelists). The story revolves around an angsty romantic relationship between a 鮫人 merperson, male in this case so merman Chang Yi and a demon/spirit subduer Ji Yunhe. In this world, there are 妖 (sentient spirits) and 妖師 (spirit masters who subdue/tame these yāo). They're referred to as demons and demon masters in the English translation I read but it is useful to delineate the difference between 妖 yāo and 魔 mó in xianxia - try
https://immortalmountain.wordpress.co...

So Ji Yunhe grows up in Wanhua (Ten Thousand Flower) Valley together with other demon/spirit masters. Chang Yi saves Princess Shunde from drowning, she is a tyrannical princess who is the sister of the emperor. Princess Shunde takes a sadistic interest in the merman and commands the spirit masters to capture and tame Chang Yi for her amusement leading to the two lead's ill-fated relationship.

I'm not going to spoil too much here since both the Chinese novel and drama adaptation are currently very popular. The story is fairly straightforward involving interesting side characters and pairings. I like that the female relationships in this novel are supportive with a notable absence of crazy jealous second female lead. Both the MC and ML yearn for freedom, note that imprisonment, confinement and torture play a large part in the story. Also of interest is the mythology of the nine-tailed black fox and the merpeople. Other than the usual merperson's tears turning into pearls, there's also emphasis on Chang Yi's tail and 鮫珠 jiāo zhū, the source of his internal power. Very touching.

Many thanks to translator and proofreader Gem on the Way East website for the smooth enjoyable translation.

I've been reading almost exclusively danmei for the last year, but I do love myself a good fantasy romance, so decided to try The Blue Whisper after reading the summary. Something about a demon master falling in love with a demon sounded like a nice forbidden romance.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

It was just okay though... I finished it in a day because it's a quick read, but in general I wasn't super into it. Part of the reason was the characters, who all felt flat. The male lead, Changyi's character was super straightforward and not particularly interesting. He has a strict code of honor and rules that he lives by, and he pretty much doesn't deviate from this at all. Even when he supposedly hates the main female character, Ji Yunhe, and wants to get revenge on her for breaking his heart, you can clearly tell he doesn't hate her at all.

I didn't particularly care for Ji Yunhe either. I felt bad for her because she felt trapped in the demon master valley and was used only as a pawn in the valley leader's schemes, but she wasn't a very interesting character either. I was more interested in what was done to her by the valley leader and how she gradually transitioned from demon master to a demon herself, and how she had two lives as a result of that.

The story was pretty straightforward with no twists. Surprise surprise, Princess Shunde ends up being the ultimate bad guy, which given her nasty personality and extreme possessiveness, didn't come as a shock to anyone I'm sure.

I hear this novel is getting made into a drama with Dilireba, but I have very little desire to watch it. Maybe just an episode or two to see how Changyi looks like, cause I am curious whether he lives up to his descriptions in the novel, especially that fish tail of his...

When the spoilt and cruel Princess Shunde (顺德公主) captures a rare, beautiful, but stubborn merman, she wants to bend him to her will. Her desires are for him to speak the human tongue, give up his tail for human legs, and be completely loyal to her. Of the 4 existing demon-subduing groups, the Demon Subduing Valley (驭妖谷) is the most powerful, and Ji Yunhe (纪云禾), the best demon master (驭妖师) there. So Princess Shunde sends the merman to Demon Subduing Valley to be tamed into submission, setting in place a series of horrific events that slowly unfolded.

Okay, wow. This is a xianxia (chinese fantasy) story that really put my emotions through the wringer. I’m don’t normally enjoy stories that are very 虐 (torturous on the emotions) but after watching The Blue Whisper on Netflix, I wanted to know if its original novel was as frustrating as the drama. Yet, as exasperating as the show sometimes was, it still managed to make me cry my eyes out.

I was pleased to find out that the drama had followed the novel pretty closely. Yes, there were differences, but I wasn’t like, discombobulated when I read the book. There were more details and explanations in the novel that made sense and cleared up some of the confusion I had for the drama. However, the drama offered more POVs than the novel did.

I really like the merman, Chang Yi (长意). Capable and dependable, he’s also adorably innocent and sticks vehemently to his principles. Despite the cruelties of humankind, he still maintains a goodness in him.

The romance between Ji Yunhe and Chang Yi was incredibly painful and frustrating, with typical xianxia themes of self-sacrifice, perceived betrayal, for-the-greater-good and I’m-doing-this-for-your-good-but-I-won’t-tell-you. Argh. Communication, people!

Romance aside, there’s also Princess Shunde the maniac, and her equally crazy master. The torture scenes were urgh. Again, with typical xianxia themes of power seeking, and revenge for one’s fallen loved ones.

The ending felt very abrupt and could have been more fleshed out. There was so much more I wanted to know! But all in all, I still enjoyed this roller coaster of a story, although there was more pain than sweetness.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!! I MEAN JUST LOOOK AT THAT GORGEOUS COVER!!!!

For people who learn Chinese, this is AWESOME!~ Before this book, I wasn't even interested to bother reading any Chinese books, but thisssss bookkk OMG I HAVE NO WORDS...

The new TV play 与君初相识that was based on this book first caught my attention, and because I didn't have any patience to wait WEEKS for the whole play to play out like many OTHERS (yes, im looking at you right now), soooo I read this book and... WOW

For one, the plot was a fresh one after dozens of english romance fantasies that BASICALLY had the SAME OLD STORY(im a spyy and boom, i fall in love with my enemy/ im a lowly person and guess what, the prince falls in love with me/ im just a high school person minding my own business and POOF im actually this long lost princess and so on. SERIOUSLY, BLEH) It had good world building and interesting chracters, and the story was a RIDEEEE

Secondly, the female MC was a strong lead character for this story though sometimes I just wanted to enter the story and SHAKE HER (like "just tell himmmm") The male MC really grew up in the story, after... (find out urself)
After finishing this book, I kept going back and thinking about it~ HOW AM I GOING TO GET OVER THIS BOOK?????
READ IT PEOPLE!!!
I DON'T CARE IF YOU HAVE TO LEARN CHINESE FROM SCRATCH,
GO! READ! THIS! BOOOOOOOKKKK!

Amazing!!!!!! There was never a dull moment. The FL was a strong character and I devour stories like that. I love that it wasn’t really a “Prince Charming” type of story. I’m into fantasy/ supernatural and this was just the right fix. Loved it

Absolutely random choice of a book to read because everything seems disappointing lately. Good choice, I really enjoyed this Chinese romantic fantasy. Not the 5-star read but liked it a lot.
This is a story about demon hunter Ji Yunhe who falls in love with captured merman Chang Yi. She is a fierce woman who has strong will and dreams of freedom while circumstances keep her tied to Demon Valley. He is magnificent creature who is honest, strightforward and a little bit naive. He knows basically nothing of humans and how cruel they can be and is captured because of his kind heart. Their accidental meeting starts a long, winding and horrible path of pain, loss, betrayal, death and rebirth and main characters being pawns in political games. But love and care for each other is present in all their actions even when all that should remain between them is hate.
The amount of events that happen in the span of approximately 800 pages is impressive. Characters grow and change but remain essentially the same which kinda disappointed me. You just see their growth but don't feel it that much. Also I got tired of all the deaths and resurrections and magical happenings that save characters and make them meet again and again. However, there was something really pure and touching in their relationships and I couldn't help rooting for their happy ending. After all the suffering they deserved happiness. Loved the ending, it made my heart full.
But it's not only about main couple - secondary characters were so great here. So many of them, almost all well-developed, had own storylines and own reasons. Main antagonist is also not bad but predictable from the very beginning.
Now I want to watch drama, not sure if it's good enough for me to last 40+ episodes but at least I'm ready to try. And probably will read another novel from this author in the future.

It's been a while since I read wuxia novels and the premise of this book was really interesting.
In true wuxia fashion, there is lots of drama, actions , cringey words of affections, people holding honor and justice to the highest values; villain's with no real ambition and plain crazy; a hero is honest to fault and a heroine who is stubborn.

My only issue is the portions where our leads just get into all sorts of totally stupid life-threatening situations because they decide to save the other without actually talking or planning.
I suppose given the last chapter, and the way the final fight against evil went by, they learnt their lesson.
Anyhow, this book was intense in its torture scenes; and if you a person who is easily agitated by violence then please skip, otherwise a good read.
Now I will wait for the drama version to finish.

a solid 3.5!
man this is a book of mutual suffering.
one thing about our author, she will make us WORK for the loving reunion and man did this one feel like work. 🤣 it was also so sad because you felt the pain and understood the motivation for both characters. i guess it stays a 3.5 because it left me wanting more. i felt like i was close to the sun but just missing a litttle bit of the connection.
some side characters had it rough! their stories were equally heartbreaking. although our villains were insane, i would’ve enjoyed them being a bit smart, would’ve made for interesting twists.
it’s short rollercoaster ride, i recommend it 👍

I read it after watching the series. It's not perfect and there were many plot holes and cheesy moments but regardless, I still love it. I ended up reading it again and again and again.
I just wish there were more moments for the main couple.

I got tired of the repeated dying and reviving part. Glad the ending was different from the drama although it still feel rushed and abrupt.

I hope the author can make some side stories

This story was very refreshing to my mind. All the characters and their back story was very apt for each character development. We would be able to justify their past and present behaviours by understanding their past emotions and present emotions. First mystical magical novel that I enjoyed reading within few day - it was less than seven days, that shows how much I was emotionally invested in this story and the characters.
