This board book takes the rhyme of "hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle" to a whole new level, with new verses, new characters, and beautiful die-cut openings for the moon as it goes from a crescent moon to a full moon. After the cat and the fiddle, comes the rat and the rattle, the toad and the trumpet, the pig and the piano, and the chimp and cello, until a full band of animals are playing music as the cow jumps over the moon.

The silly illustrations add to the charm of the text with funny characters, colorful scenes, and a crazy dish and spoon dancing around. On each page the characters do something different as the new animal plays on their instrument. They skateboard, hula hoop, eat watermelon and icecream, iceskate, and hop aboard a train at the end.

This board book is adorable from start to finish! I love the art style of the illustrations, and the clever rhymes. It's so much fun to watch the moon getting bigger and bigger with each page until finally the cow jumps over the full moon! What a special book!

In this big book format that uses die-cuts to reveal parts of scenes, youngsters have the chance to enjoy one of my favorite classic nursery rhymes--Hey, Diddle Diddle! The illustrator utilizes right colors and a blue background to interpret the various scenes as animals and utensils behave in outlandish--and unexpected--ways. As a fan of these classic lines, I am pleased to see a modern version of the rhymes for today's audience. The lyrics and music are included on the back side of the book in case someone is musically inclined and wants to play the song. I loved how the slice of moon gets increasingly larger with each flip of the pages and how there are words revealed on the back side of the slices on the left-hand page.
