Fake It Till You Make It #1

A Billion Times No

His nickname’s Sexy Satan.
For the past three years I’ve called him boss.
So why is he telling everyone that he’s my boyfriend?

Working for Chase Lancaster was supposed to catapult my marketing career. Instead, I’m trapped in personal assistant hell. His hobbies include barking orders, torpedoing my advertising campaigns, and reducing the office staff to tears.

On a good day, he acts like I’m invisible. On a bad day, I remind myself arsenic is not an acceptable sweetener for coffee. And prison orange would be murder on my complexion.

Imagine my surprise when Chase follows me home to Bitter End, North Carolina, where I’m about to endure my ex-fiancé’s wedding.

The moment he chases off my date and offers to pose as my boyfriend, I know he's got a hidden agenda—especially when he plays the part a little too convincingly. Unfortunately, I have to play along to find out what he’s really up to.

To satisfy the town gossip squad, I’ll have to let him kiss me. Who knew Satan’s lips were so soft and inviting? And if we’re really playing the part, we’ll have to go to Lover’s Lane – testing my willpower beyond its limits.
The more time we spend together outside the office, though, the more I see a different side of him. He’s still bossy and demanding, but is it wrong that I find it kind of, well … hot?
This wedding is bound to be hell, so I might as well spend it in the arms of a sexy devil.

You can tell from the marketing that this is a wish-fulfillment romance. Chase is the rich sexy boss. Daisy is the sassy personal assistant from a small-town down South. Hijinks flow. But the book delivers on its premise with enjoyable banter, lots of hijinks, and characters I cared about, at least a little.

A lot hinges on the small town in this kind of story, and I enjoyed Reed's presentation of Bitter End. I particularly liked that it was an active element of the story as well as background, and represents a part of Daisy's frustration in not being taken seriously. Frankly, Reed does very well breathing life into the disparate elements, even the whackier ones.

If any part is shallow (beyond the wish-fulfillment setup), it's Chase's family, particularly his father. They don't play much of a role for most of the story, but then they stomp in near the end and throw everything into tatters. Not catastrophically so. I still liked the story and characters. But it was a lot of extra drama thrown in for reasons that I just didn't care about.

So this ends up with four stars that I'm not entirely certain I can justify on anything but my engagement. And I should cop to a partiality for Southern small towns and Reed hit that note just right, at least for my personal tastes. So take the indicated grains of salt on that rating.

A note about Steamy: There's enough explicit sex to come in at the middle of my steam tolerance. Those scenes are in the right spots in the story, but they're kind of, um, extra? Like, someone dubbed in a different story for the sex parts in after-editing. Daisy was rather sure of herself and adventurous in bed for Chase being only her second guy ever (and the first an acknowledged selfish prat). And I'm not sure Reed even considered what she'd established about them as characters the entire time we were in sex-land.

This book was fantastic and utterly hilarious. I laughed so hard and so loud. It brought an immense joy to me. It was entertaining as hell from the very first page. I did not want to stop reading.

Daisy Abernathy dislikes her job with a great passion because of her demon of a boss. He is rude, mean and cold to everyone and it's a true miracle that Daisy hasn't poisoned him yet. She is over the moon that she gets a break from his overbearing (sexy) a**. She is going home to her little small town with an oh so lovely name of Bitter End. Although she is glad for the break and to see her family again, she also dreads been back because she is in town for her ex's wedding.
To her wonderful surprise (not) her boss pictures up and is suddenly pretending to be her boyfriend. It's weird but not uncomfortable. Chase is in Bitter End for ulterior motives and it's up to Daisy to find out what the is. He has never shown her this much affection and attention (when they not swapping banter, which is always) and it starts messing with her head and libido. The touches become explicit and has created a craving in Daisy. She is seeing a different side to Chase. And Chase... is seeing her in her element.

I loved the banter between Chase and Daisy. It was funny as hell and kept me wanting more. I haven't read a book with great banter like this in a while. Gosh, how I wish I could move to Bitter End. This town is freaking crazy and I love it. Everybody knew everybody's business and was always involving themselves. Especially where Daisy was concerned. I loved how sassy she was and her crazy antics. Chase was a complete surprise to me. I was expecting him to be like that. He pulled out all the stops when it came to Daisy. There was a bit of seriousness in this book as well. My heart hurt for Daisy and they way she was treated during that time.

I will definitely be reading more of Kenzie Reed's books in the future. This book was just what I needed. So freaking good!!!

DNF @ 33%. I thought this sounded kind of cute, but it's just really not for me. I don't really care for any of the characters and there's some major cheesiness going on.

Very uneven, inconsistent, and not sexy

As another reviewer mentioned, this book could seriously benefit from some editing. There were multiple instances of missing words and poor punctuation use. As well, characters repeatedly info-dumped in conversation, instead of having exposition woven in naturally.

I believe this book was meant as dual POV, but there was no consistency to the switch-off. But my biggest issue was that we were told everything about the characters and town, never SHOWN. I won't even get started on the horrible Southern accents, or rather lack thereof. Oh, and the few bedroom scenes were awkwardly rushed.

If you want to read about a tight-knit Southern town with crazy residents and steamy love stories, check out Bootleg Springs. You'll thank me later!

This was entertaining enough, but also a tad OTT, hit a lot of tropes, and in DESPERATE need of an editor/proofreader.

Boring

I found this whole book disappointing. I was into it at first and the idea was good. But it flopped about halfway through. I literally had no motivation to finish reading this. I skimmed through the last few chapters just to get through it.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars

It was a good read but very uneven.

First off, Gramma Mae stole the show here!
She was, hands down, the most interesting and colourful character in this book and I loved her! And she was soooo funny, I cackled like a hyena!

When it comes to Daisy and Chase, I must admit I loved them together and their banter, it was really funny. But for me this book is not a romance romance because there are so many other issues that we learn with every page, that their romance is somehow put on the back burner, too overwhelmed by other things like Daisy's insecurities, her strained relationship with her mum, her annoying sister, her stupid ex and his new skanky wife by the name of Savannah (who is also her distant cousin? Eew). We also learn a lot about Chase and his fucked up family and the role they play in the entire story. A huge plus for me is the southern strength of all the characters, the small town atmosphere that I love to bits.

Frankly, I just wish we had more Chase-Daisy interactions in the story, more communication between them because they did lack in that department. That’s why it felt uneven. Some parts I loved, some others dragged way too much. But all in all, a good read.

I got to 32% and was mostly enjoying it... didn’t love her childish behavior and felt like she wasn’t as strong as I originally thought she was... but when they started chanting “detective club” I just couldn’t anymore - grow up!!

And, not to be dramatic, but literally having a cousin marry your former fiancé would be SO awkward... and yet the family just lets that chick act like a total B? Ummmmm, what?

AHhh! I loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading every single page of this book. I don't know, it was just so much fun to read. From the banter between Chase and Daisy to her crazy, dysfunctional family and town in Bitter End. Just everything. I enjoyed all the gossiping and drama. Oh the drama! I'm not one for a lot of drama in a book but I love the way it was built here. I never felt like it dragged and it didn't feel like it was resolved so quickly. I liked the pace of the story and minus a couple of editing issues, it was like perfect for me. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I made up crazy theories. It was a lot of fun and I haven't read a book that's made me do that in quite some time. I love the relationship between Chase and Daisy, even from the beginning. It was so natural and their chemistry was off the charts. Their banter made me laugh out loud! It was creative. It was everything. I enjoyed this so much!

First of all, I did NOT like the ending. Very underwhelming. Daisy was a very compassionate person, who loved Bitter End, but the town turned against her in a snap of a finger (and they didn’t even treat her right up until Chase did something about it). To be honest, Bitter End didn’t deserve Daisy Abernathy at ALL.

I would’ve given this book a solid 3 if Daisy’s heartbreak wasn’t downplayed like it was just a bad joke. Chase, despite his name, didn’t chase her to New York and his reasoning was very shitty. And Callie? Oh God. Fucking Callie. She was a bad sister from day one. I hope there’s not a book about her because she doesn’t deserve one. She sucks. As a sister, as a human being. Go fuck yourself Callie

3.5 stars. As I was reading this, I could have sworn i read it before, but as it went on I didn’t. I rounded up because I loved Chase and he wasn’t a manwhore. This was a cute story, and i liked the main couple a lot. There were typos that I got annoyed at though. At one point, the character Percy was Perry and there was a lot of punctuation errors. The story was cute and fun and an easy read.

This book was recommend by one of the authors I subscribed a newsletter from. This was an enemies to lovers so I was sold by from the outset...

Overall I enjoyed the story. It was funny and sexy and swoony and it centers on family. Sure, there were times when the female protagonist frustrated me a wee bit but she was relatable in a sense. And sure the plot twist wasn't very realistic but who knows what's going on in a persons mind right? Greed can drive a man insane.

“Let me give you the same answer I gave you when you asked me to sign a contract to be your errand girl for three more years. No, Chase. A billion times no.”

Daisy is not living her best days. Or years to tell the truth. Since leaving her small town behind, and moving to the Big Apple, she had hoped that her career in marketing would start. But after three years in the same company, she still was stagnate as a personal assistant. The fact that her boss is a partner in the company, heir to a powerful family, intelligent, competent, and handsome like sin could be a positive factor. But working for Satan, an unloving but extremely pertinent nickname, puts her patience to the test daily. After all, strangling or poisoning him will only make her wear one of the hideous orange jumpsuits in prison. A fact she cannot allow.
And to complete the tide of bad luck, she must attend a wedding. That is, if she can take a vacation and return home after a long time away. But the thought of witnessing her cheating ex-fiancé walking down the aisle with another woman is a difficult fact to digest. Especially without a date by her side. Which leads her to make a somewhat radical decision. That is, if she can actually leave, because Chase, her boss, has decided to interfere once again.
But fate and Chase's father decide to interfere in this situation. And so, Daisy ends up with a fake boyfriend. Her boss. The Satan. And with Chase's convincing performance, going down to hell will be easier than she imagined. But maybe all is not lost. After all, she has shown that she can make him climb a few steps toward the heaven. Maybe a redemption is in the way for these two.
With an unusual town as a backdrop, eccentric and nosy residents, and old stories from the past, their stay will be nothing than they imagined. But Chase hides something. And that could end this fresh truce between them.
The clashes between Daisy and Chase are hilarious. Their relationship is all based on a passive-aggressive tone, but with respect. Daisy is the voice of reason and the emotion Chase so needs. And he is the mouthpiece of the bitter truths that she refuses to accept. A strange couple that works very well. And that has an absurd chemistry.
The town and the people bring a comedy tone to the book. What about the homeless millionaire? A bit of drama is present, as well as suspense and even some tension in the final part. Daisy's grandmother has no filter and armed with her cane, she gets into trouble.
Daisy's mother and sister didn't win my sympathy. I hated both of them with all my might. Both are bitter and need to find a path in their life urgently. They always treated Daisy as if she were problematic, never listened to her, supported her, or took her seriously. Hateful.
Savannah was a pleasant surprise. Who would say that the snob and mean girl would catch my eye in the end? I'd love a continuation focused on her to know how her waitress job is going.
Overall the book is very good. Well written, funny, with an interesting narrative and plot that captivates the reader.

I thought this book was hilariously adorable, sweet, hot, steamy and with a fun cast of characters. Daisy works for Chase and he is just sooooo tough to work for. She’s worked for him for 3 years, trying to prove herself into a higher position, but it hasn’t happened yet. She is sweet, friendly and total opposite of her boss. Chase is known to be ruthless, a major pain in everyone’s behind but he is a smart businessman. There is just something about Daisy that Chase can’t shake though. After a huge disagreement in the office, she is heading home to her hometown, Bitter End to attend a “family” wedding and visit the fam. But rumors swirl, and his father got wind that she was thinking of quitting, and he sends Chase down there to convince her not to leave the company but Chase knows somethings up with his dad. Why is he so involved in why she quits or doesn’t quit.

I laughed quite a bit throughout reading this. These two are so funny together and not together, their inner thoughts, their interactions with the people of Bitter End, her family, gah, I loved it. The supporting characters in this town, so much nosiness, so much fun, so much shenanigans. This was my first read by Kenzie and it won’t be my last. I’m hoping she gives Naomi and Callie their own books! I need them!!

It really hits the small town annoyances on the head. Misogyny/sexism is a pretty big component of every female character. Chase and Daisy's romance is eh. It's not awful, it's not amazing. It lives in the middle. When it's there at all. It's a bummer that Daisy needs a man for people to see her value.

I had to take breaks reading it, because the small town bs, is in fact bs, but takes up a huge portion of the story. So it's probably shorter than it feels.

The conflict is a bit unrealistic (and desperate). It's out of left field, NOT in a "Oh wow I never saw that coming" more a "Ugh. Really. Please stop"

There are amusing moments, but they're drowned in pettiness and hidden away in the literary version of small talk.

Pretty sure it's the first in a series. I could guess who the next one would focus on. Buuuuuuuut the two most obvious choices, are both written to be unbearable, manipulative, passive aggressive people. While I'm sure their personalities would get a complete 180, I'm still leaning towards no.

White noise. That's what it is. White noise.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Daisy thought that working for Chase would catapult her career.
Instead, it was like working for the devil.
When she has a chance to escape, guess who followed her to her hometown.
Is her boss messing with her mind ?
I am gotta say that Chase is a good actor.
He was only supposed to "pretend" to be her boyfriend.
But his acting is making it more difficult for Daisy to remember it is only pretend.
What is Daisy going to do ?
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

This is such a fun book! Daisy "Daysaster" is the most fun romcom character I have read in a long time!
She works as a PA at the Lancaster Hotel Enterprises with Chase (her Sexy Satan boss), he is ruthless and their banting is so entertaining to read, it will put an smile on you (I am sure!). They are put together as a fake couple in her ex-fiance's wedding and in a two-week vacation in Bitter End, a small city in North Carolina. Daisy and her friends are so lovely and the Grandma is the best character ever! I just loved this book and know you will too!

Small town romance couldn’t get any sweeter in this heartwarming, funny, endearing book! It didn't take me long to read this book because I was interested in the synopsis from the start. I had some ups and downs while reading this book and I couldn't really rate this one a 4 or 5 stars because of some things that bothered me.

I'm gonna begin with what I love about this story. It's filled with all the romantic tropes that I adore and that at least deserves a star. So to begin with, let's set a scene. Daisy works as a personal assistant to Chase Lancaster who is in charge of the branding and marketing department of Lancaster Hotels and Resorts. She was hired by Chase's father 3 years ago as a 'debt' to her father, his college chum, and an ex-business partner. Chase is stubborn, an asshole, and the incarnation of Satan himself. He scares everyone who works for him and has no problem with firing people without consideration. Everyone is slightly intimated by him, not Daisy though. They banter almost every day and she has no problem standing up to him. Until one eventful day when Daisy was forced to return to her hometown in Bitter End, North Carolina to attend her ex-fiance's wedding.

Bitter End is a small town where everybody knows everybody and gossips spread like wildfire and at the center of it was Daisy's remarkable reputation as Dais-aster. Wherever she goes, trouble follows. And apparently it sticks like chewing gum. Disaster ensues as Chase follows Daisy home and stays at her family's hotel, pretending to be her boyfriend.

I gotta say for a debut novel, this one is rather spectacular. It was complex and has a solid plot. It's more than just a romantic comedy, because sure.. Daisy's family is a hoot (especially Grandma Mae). They got issues to sort through, although everything is done in a comical sort of way. As far as any rom-com goes, it has elements to surprise and enjoy. The author has a great sense of humor that she graciously offers in the characters' dynamic.

Now, moving on to the bitter parts (pun intended). First, I was not feeling the 'supposed' sexual tension between Chase and Daisy. I did at first, but only for a few fleeting moments when they were trying to one-up each other. There was little to zero build-ups into their romantic development. There were some parts that just happens out of the blue and very uncharacteristic of them, it just frustrates the hell out of me. And this happens more than once!
Second, Chase lacks personality, apart from the author's effort in making him an asshole, he really has nothing to say for himself. His character is just not transparent and congruent enough. More than that, he claims to care for Daisy but his actions speak otherwise and the only action he shows when he's trying to sex her up.
Third, this small town shenanigans is just too much to the point that the people of Bitter End really annoys me. Especially with how they were all up to each other's business. I know this is a fiction book, but it has doesn't have enough substance of reality to make it believable.
Lastly, it drones on longer than I care for. I found myself skipping over some parts because it doesn't hold my attention for long.

All in all, I give this one a 3 star!

I first got this book for free on Bookfunnel. Imagine my dismay when I reached the end of the second chapter to find out that it was only an excerpt! There was absolutely NO WARNING in the description that it wasn't going to be the full book! Promotions like that should be upfront about the contents. I wanted to leave a review but I couldn't without actually reading it first. That wouldn't be fair so I bought it, which, honestly, I shouldn't have. That was a rather dirty trick to sell the book and I fell for it.

Now to the actual review of the book. There were editing problems throughout that were distracting and so easy to fix. Wrong words (like too when it should have been to), missing words or punctuation. The H even gets called the wrong name at the end!

As far as romance, I kinda love enemies-to-lovers because I know it'll include good banter. While there are some good lines passed back and forth, the love between the H and the h wasn't convincing. Miscommunications abound and the main thing the H does to show his love for her is stand up for her to her family and the townspeople who belittle every idea she expresses. He's still a jerk throughout and their interactions feel more competitive than loving.

The townspeople were nosy like a small town but not very loving towards the h. It was really annoying how they treated her. It's no wonder she didn't go home very often. The only one I liked was Gramma Mae. I felt like everything was wrapped up too nicely in the end to be believable.

This book sounds super cute and is on sale on chirp so I thought I’d check it out of the library to see if I loved it and wanted to buy. First this may be better if you read it. It’s mainly read by a female reader who was like nails down a chalkboard for me. She seemed to be so OTT on the accent. Also her male voice was no different. The guy reading was good but he didn’t read anywhere near as often.

The book was seriously cheesy and OTT. The girl who took the heorine’s fiancé, grandma, her mother, sister, and even the hero’s parents were bizarre caricatures. I think the author was trying for funny but it would be insulting to most southerners. Just a bad vibe. Also the hero was a jerk and not very smooth but in his position he would need to be. Also, the ridiculous phone thing and credit card thing would not be possible. I just sat there rolling my eyes. It’s just not that good. Big disappointment for me. 😳

I thought this was a cute book. I enjoyed seeing the change in Chase from sexy Satan to the real person he became. I loved the small town drama and Daisy having trouble escaping from her past. Most people who grew up in small towns could relate to her.

My first read from the author and I really enjoyed this one! I love Chase and Daisy's banter. Right from the beginning, I know their story's going to be intriguing. I love how Daisy started rebelling against Chase because she's not taking any BS from him anymore and is threatening him to quit. I seriously love their banter, its like no other. These two are just funny
