I'm losing control of my magic... and a wolf shifter has to keep me in check.
An Ancient evil is spreading throughout the land. When it knocks on the door of my school, everyone expects me to fight it. But I’m hiding a secret….my magic is on the fritz.
Not only that, but the headmaster forces me into combat training lessons with my nemesis.
Aiden Lawson, wolf shifter. Did I mention he's ridiculously gorgeous and impossible to ignore? Our lessons are explosive, and I never seem to come out on top. He won’t go easy on me. He's as ruthless as he is loyal.
If I can just get my magic under control, then I can be rid of Aiden for good.
But when the Ancient evil breaks through the school’s defenses, Aiden and I have to fight.
Whether we're ready or not.
Welcome to my year at Thunderbird Academy.
Full of magic, adventure, and romance, Of Water and Moonlight is the first book in an addicting young adult paranormal romance series by USA Today bestselling author Valia Lind that will keep you reading late into the night!
***Thunderbird Academy is set within the world of Hawthorne, and while some areas intersect, it's not necessary to read that series first to enjoy this one.

I absolutely love this book. I took turns reading and listening to this book and all I can say is wow.... I just love it. The story will keep you interested from beginning to end, all the different characters will have you laughing, and shaking your head and wanting to know more. Even if you do want to yell at them a few times until you remember that they are just teens.
Maddie is my new favorite Hawthorne sister. I would say she's my favorite character in this world, except Aiden wins that title hands down. These characters were so fun!!
I loved the academy setting. I loved all the tension between Maddie and Aiden. The romance was delightful. I also liked the teachers.
The friendships were also amazing. It was fun to see Maddie have a great group of friends that she could count on during difficult times.
This book ends on a cliffhanger, but it made me really excited to read the next book!
What in the name of slowburn was that- I usually hate books with slowburns that never end ! But this one was really good ! I needed a YA kind of book and this one was just perfect ! We are following a really powerful witch on her journey to become a woman and a skilled witch. But one day her world has been turned upside down, the ancient devil woke, and caused havoc! With the nearing threat her school assigns every student a trainer to teach them hand to hand combat. Excited, she shows up early to her training session only to realise that her trainer is her very hot but very annoying enemy!
This book was so good! A little bit academy, a little bit shifter and elemental magic, and some solid romantic tension with an enemies to lovers/forbidden love plot. I can’t wait to read more in this series!
It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I found recommended on social media that wasn’t filled with obnoxious amounts of language and mature themes but still had elements of magic and mystery that I absolutely love.
The story is told through Maddie’s POV so you get the inner monologue of a 16 year old girl, which I kind of enjoyed (though it took a bit to get used to since reading more New Adult/Adult fantasy). You have an obvious love interest but no crazy love triangle situation, the story opens up with a mystery that uncovers more mysteries (which is only natural), and you have a mix of witches, shifters, and Fae sprinkled throughout.
Of Water and Moonlight is a short read (compared to the books I normally read that range from usually 300-500 pages or so) but it moves at a steady enough pace that allows the story to “breathe” in moments between action/adrenaline scenes without seeming too boring or drawn out.
I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I don't usually review books, but I wanted to clarify my thoughts on it. The book had a lot of potential, but it felt like there were too many things going on. There are Fae, Shitfters, Witches, Ancients??, multiple types of spellcasting, and I honestly didn't understand most of it. The world wasn't built up during the story; instead it seemed like I was already supposed to know it. That said, I haven't done much research on this series, so perhaps there is a book I'm supposed to read before it. I felt lost and confused throughout the entirety of the book, and I was even disappointed with the banter between the FMC and her love interest. It seemed almost juvenile and would quickly shift from underlying romantic/sexual tension to meaningless angry comments. Overall, the book seemed like it wanted to be Harry Potter (or even Carry On) with werewolves and Fae. I personally didn't enjoy this book, but I did finish it so make of that what you will.
It was recommended to start with this Novel Book 1 in the Thunderbird Academy trilogy. But I felt confused most of the novel as it kept going on and on about her first year at the academy that doesn’t exist in this series? So I’m assuming this is a spin off series.
Aside from the constant mentions of “last year with XYZ characters” this book was well written as it flowed nicely. The characters are likable, but naive and childish at times. The magic takes up a lot of the book that’s somewhat different then other academy books I have read previously. It was enjoyable I plan to continue this series but at a later date when I can research this author and all her writing to understand this world a little more than I did diving head first into a book without any idea what was to come.
I have been in a book slump for a little while now and DNF so many books until this one!!! Finally I find a book with enemies to lovers with enough sexual tension to bring the house down without being too fast or vulgar! Usually reading these types of books even with enemies to lovers theres just not enough tension for long enough to be a hot slow burn, this one was fun! And the h was vulnerable but also very strong and tried to think things through and can also pack a punch! I also love the H and his ways of showing his interest even when they are fighting! Her friends are also very important to the story and I love them as well! Cant wait to read more in this world!
This YA paranormal romantic academy read is Full of magic, adventure, and romance. It’s well written and hooked me from the very first page with its gripping storyline that is full of magic, suspense, romance and twists and turns you will not see coming. Love the characters and their relationships and look forward to reading more!
Valia Lind is such an incredible author! I love everything about this book. It gave me the whole picture of what's happening throughout the whole book vividly! I'm able to get the grasp of what really is going on with the story because there are really times that it's difficult for me so I'd dump it to my dnf list. Also I went through a roller coaster of emotions because of Aiden Lawson who never cease to stop pissing me off every single time. Don't care if he's genuine with her but the way he treats Maddie is just unfair (there are moments where he treats her right but still). He's puzzling ㅜㅜ. I'm anticipating for his character development in the next book.
I absolutely loved Of Water and Moonlight! This book had it all-- a sexy and mysterious wolf shifter, and fun and totally relatable witch still coming into her own, and an ancient enemy! Bonus--a super fun school setting! I wanted to stay in the world and was so sad when it ended. Looking forward to continuing the series!
I really enjoyed this book. I love paranormal stories with witches and shifters in them and this was no exception. Right from the start it had a smooth flow to the writing. I couldn't put it down. There were a few spelling errors, missing letters and extra words that don't belong but it didn't take away from the flow. I would definitely recommend this story.
Maddie is a Hawthorne sister and is known for performing a spell against the Ancients. If the stares of her peers at Thunderbird Academy wasn't bad enough, her dad is missing as well and Maddie will do anything to find him. However, her friends Liam and Kate haven't returned to the school because of the threat of the Ancients, leaving her alone. However, her new roommate Jade doesn't seem so bad and doesn't treat her differently like everyone else does.
Enter Aiden. He's a brooding shifter that seems to have it out for Maddie. She hates the pressure she's under because everyone seems to think she has it all together, even though she doesn't. Aiden calling her names like Duchess doesn't help make anything easier. To top it off, Maddie can't help but feel drawn to Aiden. Sure, he's gorgeous, but there's something else springing to life between them and Maddie isn't sure if she likes the distraction. As the threat of the Ancients begins to knock on the doorsteps of the academy, Maddie might have to rely on Aiden and her new friends more that she'd like to.
OF WATER AND MOONLIGHT is the first book I've read by Valia Lind so I did miss a bit of background information, but I still loved it. Valia does a good job at filling the reader in on what's happened in the past books so they don't feel left out if they start with this one. Aiden is so frustrating and sexy at the same time that I look forward to see how the relationship between Maddie and Aiden changes and grows. I love how there are all types of supernatural beings in this book but the prominent ones are shifters and witches. Maddie is also the best. She's so stubborn and strong which will be needed with the danger she faces.
Final Verdict: OF WATER AND MOONLIGHT is a supernatural paranormal romance full of action, betrayal, and magic. I would recommend this to fans of fantasy, paranormal, action and adventure, magic, romance, shifers and witches.
Maddie went back to Thunderbird Academy after helping her sisters with the spell against the Ancients. She is was use to flying under the radar. Now everyone knows who she is and what she helped do. She doesn't like the attention. Her friends from the first year have decided not to attend the academy this year, so she alone. She meets her new roommate, they seem to hit it off. She goes about her studies. She sees a new group of boys talking, one of them catches her attention. She keeps walking, every where she is, Aiden boy she saw is there. He is rubs her the wrong way. They both have a combative attitudes with each other. When the school comes under attack and Maddie is in danger, Aiden comes to her rescue. They get closer to each other but seems to always hit a wall with each other. Maddie finds out more information about Aiden that completely wrecks her, but her magic is back and stronger than ever. When danger comes into the school, it is the connect to Aiden that aid Maddie and her magic.
There is so much going on with Maddie, her magic, the spell gone wrong and what is going to happen between her and Aiden. The author keeps you engaged and sets a great pace of the book. There is something for everyone in this series, I am looking to reading book 2

First let me say that this is my first Valia Lind book, and I totally loved it! Although I haven't read the previous series (which I'll definitely read as soon as possible), it wasn't hard for me to follow the story. The author has done a great job providing background information so that new readers don't fell lost. That being said, the book was mind-blowing! I loved each and every character, especially Maddie and Aiden. Their relationship is complicated right from the start, but there's no denying the connection between them. The relationships and dynamics between Maddie's close circle of friends is amazing, and it made me feel like I was part of their group. The magic involved is well thought and brilliantly executed. The plot has excellent twists, that kept me breathless. So there you have it: magic, romance, danger, twists and turns. What more could I ask for? Oh, yes! The next book in the series, please?!

In order of importance to me: (-) Insta-love without relationship development (-) hingeing wholly on the concept of "soulmates" - a special "one" that you just are destined for rather than someone you actually get to know and love; completely downplaying friendship & character in favour of sexual tension & physical attractiveness (-) lack of actual academy genre - they go to classes but you don't actually get to see or learn anything of what goes on in these classes (-) blatantly obvious who the heroine will end up with from the first page (I don't like love triangles, so I don't usually object, but dragging us through multiple stories just seems pointless when it's this obvious) (-) run-on sentences and incorrect use of lay/lie
But it's not a 1-star review, because: (+) exciting story; it says a lot that I'm gonna continue reading the series despite being so irked by the romance, just because I want to find out what happens in terms of the ancients (+) the writing can be moving, if you ignore the grammatical errors
It's such a good feeling to have to know that I still love Valia Lind's writing as much as I did the first time I read her earlier works.
Of Water and Moonlight is a fast-paced, romantic and highly entertaining read. Maddie is a likable heroine that you would root for from the very beginning. I honestly don't know though if there's a series I should have read first before this one? (Silver lining, that would mean more Valia Lind's books to read for me. So yeay!) Because if felt like the story started right in the middle. And at first, there were all these references to something I had no idea happened. Fortunately, it was easy enough to catch up and I didn't feel lost following the story.
It's been a long time since I read about shifters and witches. But you should know that I have a certain fondness and weakness for tall, dark and broody wolf shifters. Aiden is my newest book boyfriend and if the sequel is nothing but him being all secretive and protective and mysterious, I would absolutely devour that. Jade is one character I have to say I can most relate to. I am a hopeless romantic. So the banter and chemistry between Aiden and Maddie? I'm all for it.
I finished this in one sitting and I'm actually already right in the middle of the second book while writing this review. So excuse me, I have to get back to Maddie, Aiden and gang. And I really, really hope I'd finally get to meet Kate, Liam and the rest of the Hawthorne sisters.
So I thought there would be more focus on her fritzing power based off the synopsis, but that aspect of the story was barely a passing glance. I mean she’d say she was struggling with it, but readers are never actually given that struggle on the page except for maybe once or twice and, even then, very briefly.
Good bare bones though! Love the magic/supernatural academy setting. The antagonism between the MC and her love interest. It was very high school with the way they pushed each other’s buttons (not sure what age range the characters were supposed to be, but they came off like older teens).
✨Witches ✨Wolves ✨Hidden power/growing power ✨Reluctant celebrity ✨Insta-attraction, yet denial ✨Slowburn (as in this book is ALL tension) ✨Kind of mentor/mentee with the combat training ✨Fighting evil shadow creatures ✨Hidden enemies
Like I said, cool setup. Maybe not a complete winner, but I still found it enjoyable and might consider reading the next book to see what happens next for the characters with all those twists toward the latter portion of the story.
This was a great read. The world Valia Lind sets up is very entertaining. I found out after reading this book that there are others in the world that would explain more backstory. Heck, ya I'm going to read those! I enjoy the characters a great deal. I had no idea who the villain was and the reveal was a great twist. The development of the relationship between the two main characters was confusing at first but later was explained satisfactorily. My one complaint is the spelling and other grammar errors which, while not excessive, were bad enough to take me out of the story or cause me to guess at missing words on occasion. Can't wait for the next book.

Though this is book 1 in the series, it is connected to the Hawthorne Witches series.
This connect made it very easy for me to dive into this book and enjoy it. Maddi was one of the youngest Hawthorne sisters and we saw little of her in the previous books, but one thing was clear even then, she was powerful.
This series is about Maddi, her journey and her growth into her powers.
As usual there's a romantic angle and the ancients which have been a major focus of the Hawthorne series.
All in all a fast paced book with loads of magic, thrill and mystery.

Maddie is an exceptional elemental witch . She's already depicted as hero in this book. I haven't read the previous one. She's trying to protect her friends, and school from the ancients. She's having an attraction to the wolf shifter, Aiden . They start off as enemies, and later when he repeatedly protects her from the shadow creatures she fell in love with him. Being an alpha he was already betrothed to Natalie,a female alpha. Maddie is heart broken by her unrequited love. When she try to protect the school by her story spell, she shifts the school to the fae realm to her friend Liam . Need to see what happens next in this series. I really loved it .
She controls water, there are shifters, secret libraries, and plenty of clean but steamy tension? This is my kind of book! It’s as though the author wrote out my favorite childhood day dreams and made it cooler!
What I didn’t realize: This is the sequel series. It’s fine and understandable without reading the first series. I sure enjoyed it anyways! But I will be going back to read the other series asap.
My one gripe with the writing: Sometimes the scene shifts and it’s not obvious that it has. The result is feeling like a character just disapparated from a scene once in a while. Other than that, it’s great!
Great start to this series. Maddie is well written into this story and is very relate-able. Being at Thunderbird Academy and being expected to live up to her sisters greatness, is not easy. She already has her mission on what she wants and she doesn't want any distractions even from guys. Though she learns soon enough she may have to fight to protect her friends and the academy. Looking forward to the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a great start to a new series. I likes that it started in the middle of something. At first it felt like I missed something but the book slowly reveals the past. I liked that there was no heavy info dump to slog through like some books.
The world was fantastically developed, all the characters were fully formed. There was a great mystery involved too.
So if you like supernatural books with mystery, sort-of romance, magic and more then this book is for you.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
I listened to this one and was hooked right away! This being the first I've read of Valia Lind's, I wasn't aware I came in on a spin-off, however, she gave enough descriptions, when needed, that I felt like I knew enough to go on. The world building was great, and I really enjoyed the characters. The story has a dark cloud over it as The Ancients had arisen after a long sleep of sorts and were trying to take back the world, each group of magical beings and their territories, as quickly as possible. (Reminded me of the darkness of the Death Eaters when taking over Hogwarts.) The magical community of fae, shifters, and witches are scrambling to fight off these ancients and one young witchling, the MC, seems to have something "extra" that could defeat them, once she gets control of herself and discovers what's making her different. Enter a hot wolf shifter that appears to detest her & she is assigned to for battle training. Their slow burn romance, turned forbidden romance, is a bit frustrating, but that's the name of the game for slow burn, lol There really isn't a mean girl for this academy, which I enjoyed. The action, mystery, and suspense really kept me listening and I loved the support characters. However, at the end, I wanted to throw my earbuds with the ending HOOK, aka cliffhanger, for the next book! I need to know what happens!! This audiobook was provided by the author by request, and I voluntarily have chosen to post a review.
From a long time I want to read some fantasy novel especially related to werewolves. So I started this one. This novel revolves around Maddie Hawthorne who is a witch and try to protect her academy from the ancients. But in the second year of her school she meets Aiden, a werewolf and alpha. Aiden is a mystery to Maddie. But he protects her whenever she is in problem. When Aiden becomes the trainer of Maddie what could happen between them both. Read to know about this hot and broody alpha. It's a lot like wattpad books and not so fast paced
