Having somebody go upside your head with a toilet tank lid would make anybody cranky, but when local contractor Max Wheeler meets his end this way, he takes it more personally than most.
As any responsible ghost would, he seeks out the local sheriff to report himself murdered. With yet another paranormal reality to wrap his head around, Hunter dives into an investigation and learns that there's more beneath the surface of his small southern town than he thought.
Though he tracks down lead after lead, he keeps coming up empty, and Max becomes more irritated—and irritating—with each dead-end.
Meanwhile, things take a turn for the strange when briskets and peach pies start going missing, and broken items turn up fixed. Throw in a slippery young pick-pocket with secrets of his own and you've got three separate mysteries that just aren't adding up.
All Noelle wants is a finished swimming pool instead of a giant mud hole in her yard, and to get her bakery up and running, but cranky ghosts, gossipy but (mostly) lovable old hens at the beauty parlor, and bratty kids just keep slowing her down.
Is it really too much to ask that people stop killing each other long enough for a witch to get some work done?
I was born and raised in the South and even hung my motorcycle helmet in Colorado for a few months. I've always had a touch of wanderlust and have never feared just packing up and going on new adventures, whether in real life or via the pages of a great book.
When I was a little girl, I didn't want to grow up to be a writer—I wanted to raise unicorns and be a superhero. When those gigs fell through, I chose the next best thing: creating my own magical lands filled with adventure, magic, humor, and romance.
I live in Florida with my two dogs and when I'm not writing or reading, I'm racing motorcycles with my taller, more handsome half, hanging out at the beach, or binge-watching anything magical on Netflix.
I'm eternally grateful for all the people who help make my life what is today - friends, readers, family. No woman is an island.

Murder to the Max by Tegan Maher was another fun adventure in Keyhole Lake with Noelle, Raeanne, Shelby, Aunt Addy and Hunter. Noelle as three mysteries to solve in this one - a murder, a child pick pocket and an invisible handyman. Plus, poor Hunter finally gets to see his first ghost. Laughter, snarky remarks, ghosts and witch magic kept me turning the pages. I've already got the next loaded to my Kindle.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book...especially the humor, the shenanigans, and the quirky characters. Ghosts are an intricate part of the community in this book and the current murder victim, Max, becomes the latest 'living impaired citizen' to inhabit Keyhole Lake. He is definitely a bossy boo!
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series to get to know the lovable characters better and to discover what happens with this eclectic group. The depth of atrocious deceit and ruthlessness of the former sheriff continues to make me appreciate my peaceful and tranquil lifestyle very much indeed.
This is a clean read that is able to stand on its own. However, you definitely see the bigger picture if you read the entire series in the order they were written.
This book concludes with an H.E.A., but the next book in the series is sure to include another murder mystery that needs to be solved.
Like Sweet Murder another tale from the life of young witch Noel and her even younger but equally powerful sister Shelly, Not to forget the new sherrif in town, Hunter.
A wonderful cast of quirky charaters, some alive (and ceratinly kicking ass) and some living impaired (ghosts), all of whom have a good sense of humour and speak their mind (most of the time). Throw in a cursed aristocrat, now a speaking ass (male donkey), a murder and some true rednecks and redneck women Gretchen Wilson would be proud off and you end up with a witty, funny and very entertaining RomCom all too well worth the read.
Kathleen Costa “Murder to the Max” earns 5/5 Quirky Ghosts and Marvelous Magical Fun!
I became an eager fan of Tegan Maher’s work after reading her short stories, “Bubble, Bubble, Here Comes Trouble” in the 2017 collection “Witch and Treat” and “Witching for a Miracle” in 2017’s Spells and Jinglebells. So, I was very comfortable entering her world of Witches of Keyhole Lake with book one “Sweet Murder,” and eager to continue with this book “Murder to the Max.” We have Noelle and Hunter, having met over a previous dead body, exploring a closer, more honest, relationship. Noelle is a witch, and Hunter is getting used to that and the idea magic even exists, but ghosts, too? Well, there goes easing Hunter into Noelle’s reality. Max Wheeler, recently bashed in the head with a toilet tank lid, needs their help…find my body and my killer! What a great way to start out book two in the Witches of Keyhole Lake series! This is a well written, steady paced read with a clever mystery, fun interactions between magical and non-magical characters, fun dialogue, and engaging descriptions. I can be finicky about my paranormal stories, no juvenile hocus-pocus for me, and Tegan has woven into the character’s lives and the community a realistic paranormal twist, almost floating behind the scenes. The characters are beginning to develop well, some quirky, but all engaging and fun to follow. It all works! Fans, like myself, will be very entertained, but newbies need not shy away since much of the backstory and character connections are revisited, but no spoilers even though events in book one are referenced. Be sure to check out her newest Witches of Keyhole Lake short story, “Moonshine Valentine,“ in the newest 2018 paranormal collection Hexes and Ohs. It's all marvelous!
"Disclosure: I accepted an ARC from the author, but the opinions in this review are my own honest insights."
While packing up from a week at a cabin with Hunter. The ghost of Max Wheeler, the construction owner who is building Noelle's pool appears to them telling Hunter he needs to go to his office to find his body. Noelle just wants to have her new swimming pool finished before Labor Day so she and her friends can enjoy a day of fun with each other. But now she doesn't know if that will be happening or not. Which is irritating as she has a big mud hole in the back of her yard. She has to help Hunter investigate, because all the clues point to the wrong person as the murderer (in Noelle's mind anyway) That's not the only mystery she needs to solve. Things around her property appear to be fixing themselves, and chores are also being done on their own (which she is NOT complaining about) while at the same time, food does seem to be disappearing (which she IS complaining about). This is the second book in this series, and I will admit I'm enjoying it up to this point a lot more than I thought I would when I started the first book. The story has developed characters and plenty of twists to keep you guessing who may be the murderer. We have witches, ghosts, and normal people who all somehow manage to get along without freaking each other out (much!) I think I would get jumpy if I was driving a car and a ghost popped in beside me for a chat without warning.
I liked the first one ok, but this one just got tedious. I feel like the magic is just a bit too inconsistent, and the constant explanations as to why she isn't using magic in certain situations felt like word count padding. I also dislike that character development happened in the mini-book between the numbered series books, because I went straight to number 2 without knowing that there was a book in between. If listening to the mini-books in between the novels is going to be necessary, than they should be numbered parts of the series.
The male MC is kind of a huge jerk and I don't really understand why they're still together in this book. I don't know if some actual nice romance happened in the mini-book, but honestly it seems like there's more bad than good between them. I don't feel like there needs to be a love interest at all, but if there is one, make him better than this guy!
Also, the narrator, Merrit North, mispronounces words frequently, which is distracting.
Overall, I'm glad I found a cute little series for when I needed to do some hands free listening, but I won't be listening to more of these.
I'd been wanting to get back to this series, because I just love this fun and crazy bunch of friends. It's so cool how the non-magical people hang out with the magical ones and can see the same ghosts they do. Noelle's sheriff boyfriend Hunter was one of those non-magicals, but he was so calm (well, sort of) about every time he'd encounter something weird. Like the ghost of a guy just killed telling him he needed to go find his body.
There were so many hilarious moments (like Max the ghost popping in without warning) along with some really sweet moments too. A couple of people were helped by Noelle, Hunter and crew to have a good outcome from something that wasn't so good to begin with. Aunt Addy is still my favorite character and one of my overall fave ghost characters in various books I've read so far. I'm always anxious to binge to the next book via Kindle Unlimited, but I have a few books still calling for my attention, lol. But I'll definitely be back to this series.
This second book is a great addition to the series - so glad I found this author! A great escape read to entertain you for a while. The story was well-written, with a witty, descriptive style. It was full of small-town charm, friends and family characters that you wish were your own and a paranormal element that feels quite believable and real. And don't let me forget to mention how funny this book was - the prom scene alone is worth the price of admission! Poor Hunter got a surprise in this one - but he took it like a champ and that should make crime solving easier for the group down the road. Looking forward to more from this author - glad to see book #3 is already in the works! Would highly recommend.
NOTE: I did receive an ARC of the book, but my review was voluntary and honest and totally my pleasure to write!
In this second book of Witches of Keyhole Lake Series, the contractor of Noelle's new pool is murdered. The murder victim is so upset, he pops over to see Noelle's new boyfriend, the Sheriff. Of course he knows nothing about Ghosts... until now... My favorite scene is when he goes to Noelle's for dinner and they are all eating dinner after learning about Ghosts and Addie makes an appearance... then Max the donkey starts talking.... I was laughing out loud at that seen!! The cast of characters are back with another cranky ghost, a nasty hot tempered father and a sticky-fingered juvenile... Characters you love to hate and those that make you laugh at loud and those you root for! Wonderful read!
Just when I didn't think this series could get phenomenally better it does.
I loved getting to know the new characters and I'm thrilled to see how they grow and continue in the future books in the series.
Max was a cinnamon roll. Rough around the edges but warm and squishy on the inside. He was gruff, but had a heart of gold. Especially when it came to kids.
Noelles character always brings more to the table than I ever expect. She has such a mama bear approach to things involving those she cares about and I love it.
I have to say that I have loved the books in the series before this one but I really enjoyed this one the most! It gave us the found family aspect that I love and brought us more than expected when it came to the hunt for the murderer.
And entertaining southern witchy cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters in a small southern Georgia town. A somewhat normal little town with the exception that it has a view witches and a few ghosts running around. I knew sheriff from the big city is new in town and must learn how to cope with the RDs of a little supernatural interaction. Plenty of great normal townspeople interacting on a daily basis except every so often something happens. With the help of a witch a few ghosts in the normal towns people along with the new sheriff the mysteries are solved and you are kept entertained throughout. Check it out
I like the characters in this series. It's Definitely paranormal cozy with ghosts and witches. Characters were expanded in this 2nd book. Hunter is able to see ghosts in this one which adds to the fun. It starts with the ghost of Noelle's contractor showing up to get Hunter's attention. That is where the mystery begins. From there is a mixture of investigation and life with family and friends. First half of the book was slowly paced. The pacing picks up in the 2nd half as a couple of new characters are introduced and the investigation gains momentum. Fun, clean cozy with magic, ghosts, and family.
Love the characters , set in small Georgia town , with some residents that are ghost that decided to stay and live among the town folks that can see them. Noelle comes from long line of Irish witches , she lives in farm with her ghost aunt teenage sister talking mini donkey who missed off the wrong red headed Irish witch in 16 century . Her boyfriend the hunky sheriff her cousin best friend runs coffee shop. This one is my favorite so far.several new characters introduced a ghost ask or demands them to find his body then solve his case. Lot of red herrings and several mysteries in this one.
This second book in the series was a whole lot of fun. I enjoyed it better than the first -- possibly because the whole "we have to pretend around the proto-boyfriend" plot is over.
The murder mystery was rather well done, with lots of red herrings strewn about. I will quibble that the final confrontation with the murderer seemed to have some holes in it in timing. But that is a quibble.
I like the new additions to Noelle's family. I also like that the author did not throw all of the introductions into book 1, and instead is staggering them out. Which makes it a lot easier on the reader.
An entertaining romp with some lovable characters. The Southern charm really comes through in this series and I felt as if the characters could be real people. It's also nice that the main character, Noelle, doesn't really have to hide her magic, as most of the townspeople seem to realize that she's a witch with a good heart. The mystery had me guessing until the reveal, and I was very surprised. I think there could have been a few more breadcrumbs left for us to follow to the murderer, as they were not on my list of suspects at all.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited and used T2S text-to-speech app for audio.
Maybe a 3.5? I like the book and the characters. Being from the South, I enjoy the humor and even identify (or see someone) in most of the people in the story. I'm beginning to think the storylines are getting too involved and just checking some boxes. The main character (witch) gets the sheriff (check), best friend has a bakery (check), now there's a disadvantaged child that needs rescuing. Now, a discharged vet with PTSD (potential love interest for that bff). It's still fun and as I said, humorous, but the potential for too much is right on the edge (for me). I'll go for book 3 since I'm enjoying it right now.
I like the genre called cozy mysteries. They are usually a blend of murders and romance with the heroine stepping out of her comfort zone to solve the crime. This story does an excellent job of combining all those elements plus an added fun element with the heroine being from a family of witches. In this series, several family members and friends don’t let their living impaired status (they are ghosts) keep them from helping to solve the mystery.
Another fun witchy cozy although equally as short as the first one. It is time to introduce the city slicker boyfriend to all the family, especially the life-impaired aunt that still "lives" at the farm. The sheriff handles it better than I would have but still makes stubborn decisions about who done it.
I like that there is a bit more witchy stuff in this one. I also like that there is an interesting twist to the falsely arrested guy. More hints about future strangeness that I wish would be added to the story to make it longer.
Great book as the second in the Witches of Keyhole Lake series. Noelle, Shelby, Hunter, and some of their 'living impaired ' gang tackle the murder of Max Wheeler, owner of Wheeler Construction. While the ghost of said victim wants the murder solved, he vanishes with a cryptic phrase whenever questioned. Who's hiding what? The Keyhole Lake witches and their friends have a lot of digging to do to solve this one.
Loved it! Read it in less than a day. Many of the same characters but they are becoming more developed. New characters add to the story and fill in the town a little more. I couldn't figure out the culprit until the very end - well done!
As I said in my review of the first book, the magic is good but not over the top - just the right amount to make it "paranormal" but it doesn't overtake the story or the plot. I'm ready to jump into the third book!
I just love Noelle; she's got the biggest heart, but she's no pushover! These characters are engaging and adult, and the little "southern-isms" scattered throughout are a hoot. The writing flows beautifully, and the mystery turns out to be one primary and a couple of (or more) secondary situations to untangle. And Noelle's unnerving experience may have a connection to outside events possibly foreshadowed... Intricate and well worth the read!
I liked this, but I honestly can’t put my finger on why I didn’t love it. Perhaps it’s just a combination of factors, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to throw in the towel on the series. I liked Max, and the suspects floating around this case. Justin is where I think I get a little iffy. A fun addition, but I’m not generally a fan of younger kids in my cozy mysteries. Oh, well. Perhaps the next book will be great?
Just found this author and this series of books. I just finished the second one and I’m getting ready to purchase the whole series. There are so many laugh out loud moments and “ unique southern turn of phrases”. The characters are as varied and unique as you could possibly imagine. The storyline will keep you guessing till the very end. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and other books by this talented author.
I like the focus on parenthood and raising a child with love instead of abuse, neglect, or overindulgence. Hunter improved, I liked the whole ghost helping solve his own murder idea, and I still love the dialect and humor. However, the mystery itself didn’t seem to be the main emphasis of the book, and ultimately I didn’t really feel I got to know most of the suspects well enough to be invested.

I read a few books in this series in 2021. this just happen to be one that I read. It is still very enjoyable.
I am so surprised the witches in this series tells everyone that come into contact with them to get used to the fact that they are witches. where as all the other series all have to hide that.
talking donkey, most everyone can see ghost, not just special ppl with powers. so different. not only they can see, they can talk to them too.
How do you explain the unexplainable? You don’t? When a ghost shows up to tell the sheriff that he was killed and you then have to explain about the ghost, well what more can you say? Oh there was a murder, unexplained missing items and repairs, and a child pickpocketer.
If you want the answers you need to read the story.
This books settles into witchy Keyhole Lake mysteries. Hunter the sheriff gets clued into the ghosts, mind reading and other witchy things. Of course, Noelle his witch girlfriend doesn’t trust him to find the murderer and sticks her nose in it. While I liked the book I only gave it 4 stars because again the story make the sheriff incompetent. Also I figured out early on who the murder was.
I'm excited to say that I have found a new author that I really enjoy reading. The series is expanding into more characters who feel important to the story being told. The writing style keeps my interest and is a joy to read. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Maker's works.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THESE BOOKS!! As a Southern girl, born and raised, these stories make me think of my growing up in a small town. A small town, where practically everyone knows your business!! The addition of witches makes it totally AWESOME!! Me? I'm off to read the next book!!
