Oleja Raseari is itching for a fight.

For generations, she and her people have been enslaved at the bottom of a desert canyon. They spend their days in the mines, toiling away to earn another meal from their mysterious captors.

Well, most of them do.

Oleja, a tinkerer and self-taught fighter, has bigger things on her mind. No one in history has ever escaped successfully, and Oleja loves nothing more than a challenge. Many have attempted escape; death caught them all—and for Oleja, death is not an option.

But making it to the outside means confronting a world she knows nothing about—a world none of her people have seen in hundreds of years. And it just might prove to be more deadly than the world she aims to leave behind.

Great read if you love fantasy novels and a post apocalyptic world to explore. Oleja Raseari knows nothing of the world beyond the desert canyon where she and her people have been enslaved for generations. They spend their days in the mines, toiling away to earn another meal from their mysterious captors. Oleja longs to free herself and her people from their lot in life. This is the tale of her attempt to escape the canyon, plot to free her people, but mostly figure out what is happening in the outside world. And what a world.

Oleja is young, rash, and doesn't play well with other, but she has to adapt.

I can't wait to read the next book and see what unfolds.

Oleja Raseari is the perfect imperfect protagonist in this suspenseful, emotional, and action-packed story. Following along on her journey, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to hug Oleja or shake some sense into her. Throughout her quest, she is faced with the question of what it really means to be a hero - among countless other trials and tribulations. This incredibly human character is what I loved most about Skyborn. Of course, the vividly detailed treacherous landscapes, thrilling battles, and shocking plot twists definitely held my interest as well. I was glued to this book from start to finish, and I recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting fantasy-Sci Fi hybrid. Looking forward to the next book!

The basic idea for the story was interesting, but it didn’t start too well for me, everything just felt ‘off’. Too many things seemed contrived and it stretched my ability to ‘suspend my disbelief’ way beyond breaking point. Perhaps I have just read too many Fantasy/SciFi books.
My other problem was Oleja, I could understand why she was so self-centered, but it was still annoying that she needed to be ‘The Hero’ at any cost. Also her internal dialogues became quite irritating after a while.

Overall it probably wasn’t a bad story, but what killed the series for me was most of he book just turned out to be one disaster after another.

This book is well written and the story feels new with unexpected twists! Plus it has a diverse group of characters. I don't personally love how much exposition the author gives to his main character's thoughts, I skimmed lots of those paragraphs but overall it's highly enjoyable and I'm excited to read the second one!
