Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known as Slim Shady and his primary stage name Eminem, is an Academy Award-winning American rapper, record producer and actor. Having sold over seventy million albums worldwide, Eminem is one of the highest-selling rappers of all time.

Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album The Slim Shady LP. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling hip hop album in history, followed by an increasing amount of popularity, critical praise, as well as controversy. While Eminem has won many Grammy Awards, been praised for having "verbal energy", high quality of lyricism and been ranked at number nine on MTV's list of The Greatest MCs of All Time, #13 on the MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music" and #82 on Rolling Stone's "The Immortals" he has often been infamous for the controversy surrounding many of these lyrics, including allegations of glorifying homophobia, misogyny, and violence.

Fun fact: I used to hate Eminem. That is, until I heard the last verse of Stan. Then I realized that often he wasn't serious and that, like others, he just meant for a song to be a song and nothing else. Slim's in his early forties, and we now have plenty examples of his human side: Mockingbird, Not Afraid, Headlights, Talkin' to Myself, etc. In other words? He's not joking anymore. At least, not all the time. But the beauty of this book is that it contains his earliest and most controversial lyrics. Think of where he came from: Detroit. Think of his age at the time: early twenties. But Em's right, because he says the stuff the rest of us won't. Our country is very politically correct, all the time, while Em represents the epitome of free speech and never, ever being politically correct. But, come on, Elton John forgave him and gets the joke, so you can too. When I became a Women's Studies major, it became hard to square that with my love for Eminem. Not for me, personally, but I had to listen to several teachers talk about the awfulness of rap music. Truth? Em's a genius. Who else would rhyme lyricist with what year is this?! He is absolutely brilliant. Free speech will always trump my feminist side, so thank god for the Second Amendment. And thank god for Em.

This isn't what I expected at all- I still love Eminem to this day so I thought I'd like to read pretty much anything about him. This is basically a glorified CD cover. It's the words to most, if not all, (I haven't finished yet) of his songs and with each one comes a paragrah or two (if your lucky) about when he wrote it, where he was at the time, and maybe, just maybe, a tiny bit about what was going on in his mind at the time. Needless to say, that's all fairly interesting but I can only read so much of the same thing slightly varied over and over. I was hoping for a lot more. It's an okay book and it's great for those few pesky words on every CD that you just can't seem to get! LOL
UPDATE_ Oh, I tried. I tried so hard. I just can't read an elongated CD cover back to back and back to back again. Hopefully the friend I'm sending this to will enjoy it more than me because I just can't do it. I've always been fairly decent at pulling the words out of songs anyway so this isn't needed! LOL

"Angry Blonde" by Eminem and Jonathan Shecter is inferior to Eminem's newest book entitled "The Way I Am." It's basically a lyric book for just about every song that he has done, minus a few on the "Infinate" record. This came out in 2002 when he only had two hit records, "The Slim Shady LP" and "The Marshall Mathers LP."

I liked it because it shows Eminem's thoughts and feelings when he was writing these songs and then it gives all of the lyrics to all of his older songs and freestyles. It was written back when he was still a little immature and you can see that.

All-in-all i really liked it and because i am an Eminem fanatic i loved reading his thoughts on his own songs and to read through all of the lyrics. When you know every word to 99% of his songs its fun to see the thought process behind them and to actually see the words on paper. I would recommend this book to people that don't understand Eminem or his songs all that well. it will make you see him in an entirely new way.

I never like autobiographies because I don't like when people use to appreciate to anyone else by giving their example that's why I don't read autobiographies. But this one is the only autobiography I have ever read perhaps I like it because this is only about great critics and verse controversies which Eminem has come up through.

I'm not sure what I expected from this but it was great to learn about where ideas for songs came from and how people reacted to them

I bought this book to review before giving it to my nephew as he is a fan of Eminem and yes I am as well, but more so from his album Relapse on up. Not saying I don't like some of his older music but I prefer from then on up. He came from nothing and made his love of rhyming into something that a lot of people love. Yeah he raps about hating women, killing and so forth but those are mostly his lyrics he has wrote. Is there truth to them? I am sure there is some truth to them but for the most part I honestly think that it's just what sounded good to him to make it flow! Would I recommend this to someone under 15, probably not unless your child is mature enough to realize right from wrong and has common sense enough to at least skip the bad words if he/she will be singing them out loud. Honestly it's up to the parents and I recommend that they read it first to determine if they should let their kid(s) read it.

Now I will admit there is a lot of swearing in this book because it's actual lyrics to his songs but if you listen to Eminem you know there is swearing so how could you expect less in this book. Before some of the lyrics in this book he will give you a little bit about how he came up with the song which is actually helpful and I wish more music artists did this sort of thing so you can take a glimpse into the life of them and have a feel of where they are coming from with their songs. Overall the book was decent especially if you are one of those people that love reading the lyrics to songs and getting a little bit of insight on the song itself.

For the fan this is basically a lyric book consisting of a couple dozen early songs and some freestyles thrown in, with commentary from Eminem about many of the songs beginnings and pictures.

I appreciated this book because it was good for my older eyes to read some of the words that I couldn't quite get on some of the songs. Some of us fans have been fans since the beginning and our eyesight isn't the best at reading old CD notes. I'm not a diehard " I know every song " type of fan - but I do like his stuff, his sense of humour, his talent and his his attitude. I still feel like I need a shower after reading some of this stuff though!

But like he says in Drug Ballad "I just say whatever I want to whoever I want
Whenever I want, wherever I want." And for that you have to agree, Eminem is an entertainer extraordinaire.

Jonathan Shecter in his forward sums Eminem up: "He took comfort in what he knew best, happily losing himself in intricate patterns and brilliant, funny turns of phrase. It was becoming increasingly clear that this crazy white kid from the wrong side of the tracks possessed a supreme undeniable talent."

First published in 2000, it would be interesting to have an updated catalogue of his work in another book form. I'd buy it.

One of the most raw, gripping lyric books I've ever read. I actually own this book in hardbound edition. Marshall Mathers is a lyrical genius.

Now this book isn’t exactly set up for a typical review so this will be a bit different from my regular review formatting. Not too mention it’s very short with the vast majority of the book being song lyrics or photos.

It is what it is and for what it is it does a great job at it.
Basically a cd companion, a way to hear about how each song came to be. If you’re genuinely interested in the mind behind the mic I’d read it.

The set up and formaing of the book is great. Changes in font and look of the lyrics makes it feel like music; when it’s just words on a page. It’s also quite humorous to see some of the lyrics/sounds written inside of a book.
You can tell what songs have more meaning and meat behind them as some songs have a few sentence explinations and others a whole page. Sometimes it’s just him going on a tangent, which works some how.

Starts off swinging by addressing the racism Eminem faced for being white. Which has always been a big problem and even till today it’s still a problem.
Of course the media’s obsession with Eminem comes up a lot and it’s quite fitting. Eminem is probably the one person, who isn’t a politican, that the media is the most obsessed with.
Touches a lot on the over sensitivity of people and society. Which is highly relevant in the world today.

Who Eminem is as a person shines through very well. It’s filled with great humour and bluntness, exactly what you’d expect from Eminem. Even some of the photos used are hilarious.

All the photos are either asethically pleasing, funny or are seemingly poking fun at the reader. Which is half the point of this book.

Over all, it’s pretty great if your interested in Eminem, basically the best rap out there, or media outrage.

Eminem is one of my favorite MCs of all time so I definitely had to get this book.
It's a lyric book released shortly after The Marshall Mathers LP, containing lyrics to selected songs from that album, as well as Infinite, The Slim Shady EP and LP. Next to the lyrics, Marshall also writes a couple extra thoughts on almost every song. His life situation at that time (not good), the inspirations behind the song, the work process behind it etc.
It makes you appreciate the Shady era again, with some of the most outlandish lyrics, amazing rhyme schemes and wordplay. As well as his unbelievably depressing life story and come up to fame with the commentary on songs like Rock Bottom. This man really had nothing but raw talent and love for Hip Hop and he made it out of his shithole.
The book is visiually striking with interesting designs on the lyrics themselves and pictures everywhere.

It's a bit of a weird decision to make a lyric book this early in his career. With only three albums and one EP under his belt. Obviously they wanted to cash in on his hype but it would have been even cooler if they did this later on in his career so that his albums from Eminem Show onwards were included. But whatever, if you are a fan this might be worth it for the pictures and extra commentary.

After reading this I am even more excited to dive into his "The Way I Am" autobiography which goes deeper into his life and work.

Being a Stan is an amazing feeling. I loved the book overall. If you tried reading this after websites like Genius.com were introduced, then you’ll probably end up saying “what the hell is this?!” It’s basically gold for his fans who keeps him in their collections or so. Otherwise all there is about 80% lyrics which one can find today simply if they have internet. The only good parts of the book are the rare pictures in high res & and little stories behind making the songs. It could have been lot better if they just added more pages with more information. As an Eminem/Shady/Mathers fan you can’t deny that it wasn’t fun reading this all lyrics again. Shady forever!

I wasn’t expecting this book to be what it was but I can’t complain any because I Stan. Anyways. I also don’t think I’ve ever read a book before where I already knew most of the words in it haha. Really loved the Kim commentary. Same with 97 Bonnie and Clyde. I love those songs so every fact is amazing to me.

A true artist and a cool peek into his mind. I’m stoked to read the next which I think is an even deeper view.

This is a cool little book, but probably more of a collectable for Eminem fans as there is very little content in this book. It is predominantly lyrics and photos with small explanations that go alongside maybe 80% of the songs.

Got through it in less than 30min, however, like I mentioned it's a cool collectable.

Initially, I was excited for this book as I thought it was a biography for the Rap God himself.. but turns out it was a lyric book with a mini background for his songs (& not the best ones imo). Furthermore, the lyrics weren't even right or complete at times so.. this book was kinda meh but I enjoyed the pics I guess.
