As the boogeyman to the underworld, Nix isn't afraid of dying. Yet this time, it's not about dying. It's about escaping with her mind intact.
I thought I'd finally stepped away from the madness of the underworld, away from the Abnormals, away from all those who would do me and those I love harm.
The world though had different plans.
And now I'm trapped, not only physically, but inside my head.
Those who have me caged say none of it was real. That I'm not a highly trained assassin of Abnormals. That I have no family. My children do not exist. That there is nothing supernatural about this world.
If they are right, then I've been crazy all along. I've been stuck inside of my head all these years, living a fantasy. If they are right I am not the legendary Phoenix.
If they are wrong . . .then that means there is a new game afoot.
Then there will be hell to pay and the fires that burn within me will consume them all.
If you like KF Breene, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Jaymin Eve, Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, or Shayne Silvers, you won’t want to miss Mayer’s books and her kick butt heroines!
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
Reading a work by Shannon Mayer is like riding in the most luxurious car in the world. Unfortunately, after that ride, one often must return to reading a Rent-a-Wreck. A Savage Spell is the latest in the world of Phoenix. It is one amazing ride. My blood pressure was through the roof. Shannon gets her readers so thoroughly invested in her characters that any break in the action, like the end of the book, is pure torture. That woman just can’t write fast enough. She also throws her readers a few Easter Eggs – referencing characters or substances from other series, also adored by her readers. This book opens after the world has changed somewhat. Abnormals are hunted, captured and their minds reprogrammed. Phoenix must tread a very fine line to come back to herself. Her motivation is, as always, her son. Does she abandon all others to get to her son or does she take the longer road to understand and rid the world of the problems? This story will continue shortly, if her readers have any say in the matter, such as begging and pleading. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 10 -20 stars at least.
When this installment was being released, I went back to the beginning, because well NIX.. A nice three book start before I dug into this one.
Well, I SWEAR I had only been reading this one for about 15 minutes and when I looked at my screen I was at 70% already.
There aren’t enough curse words in any language to accurately describe the rollercoaster we get taken on. Like holey moley gosh darn it! Every time I thought the story was going one way, we got twirled around like dancers at a ballroom event.
I never want the story of Nix to end. I know there will be actual tears when it finally IS done, but I’ll be praying to all the book gods and goddesses to get us a bunch more books before that happens.
I think Nix is my favorite character by this author, and I was excited to see she was writing more with this character…until I finished this book. I finished it, and I was like is that all?!? You’re leaving me hanging like that?!?! I want more, NOW! LOL! This was a roller coaster ride of great action and wonderful characters with a great plot. But if you’ve read this author before, you know that’s what you can always expect. I especially loved the hate the interesting bad guys in this one. You can even read this without having read the previous trilogy. I loved this book, and I can’t wait for more. Highly recommend!! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Oh. My. God. What a book!! Nix is definitely my favorite Mayer character and I am so happy to have her back again! I was worried at the beginning of the book that I would be disappointed but boy was I wrong! I love the little Easter eggs dropped in for good measure, and if you have read ALL of Mayer’s books you can glean where this one is heading as well and I LOVE that part, filling in the blanks. That cliffhanger though 😍
I fell right back into this world as if I’d never left. Nix has been captured and needs to escape. She finds new friends along the way and reunites with Dinah. Waiting anxiously for the next book because that hook at the end was pretty sharp
John Wick 3 Takes a Turn For Underworld Holy amaze-balls! I had NO idea where Mayer would take us after the epic conclusion of Book 3, and boy, did she take a turn for the crazy. But in a good way. Where do you even go after that epic of a conclusion? Well, Mayer decided to take her spin on Underworld Awakening with an Abnormal purge and lock Nix away in a medical facility with no way out. Her own spin on the idea is fascinating yet terrifying, all at once. The cloud of uncertainty Nix is faced with in this new reality lingers throughout the book since she only knows of a few acquaintances that have survived. It certainly is a great motivator for the reader to devour the book as fast as possible. I knew it would be months before the next book releases, but I just couldn’t help but speed through the book as fast as possible.
Although this book is shorter than her other books in this series, I didn’t get the feeling that she skimped too much on it; though as always, I wish her books were longer in general. I listened to the audio version, and was absolutely shocked when Hvam narrated in Dina’s voice in a similar rendition to the one for Eleanor. At first, I thought it was just an oversight, then we finally get a very brief (one sentence) comment about it in the middle of the book explaining why Hvam is talking the way she is; but it just didn’t seem like it was enough for me. Mayer should have elaborated more on it in my opinion. I don’t even know if the actual e-book or paperback readers would pick up on it at all since it was so short and flippant. And the fact that it’s thrown in the middle of the book was really irritating by the time I came upon it because I was soooooo disappointed the voice was wrong despite the professionalism that Hvam has always had in her renditions. Come to find out, it was planned, yet it’s still murky why.
In the end, you know it’s an amazing book when you’re reading along and lose track of where you are until the ending smacks you in the face like a Mack truck. I was literally screaming “WHAT??!?! NOOOOO! NOW WHAT?!?!?!” after the final sentence. I absolutely LOVE this series and can confidently say it’s in my top 5 favorite series of all time (which is saying something), so I sincerely hope this series takes off again so that we can have all the books Mayer can create in this killer world!
“A Savage Spell” puts us back in the world of the Phoenix. Instead of finding her happy ever after, Nix is confined in a government run facility with other abnormals without Bear and Killian. She is being sedated, stripped of her skills and even given blond hair and a new name. She was taken during childbirth but how Killian leave her here and never come for her. There is only one thing to do, play along with the bastards until she can find her way out.
With the help of her handler, Eligor, Nix manages to escape along with two others and a one eyed dog. Yep, you heard me right, she now has a new companion, Ruby the one eyed dog, Once she is out and about, she realizes that there has been a purge with the sole intent of wiping out the abnormals. Yet, it is not the government’s behind this it is a nemesis far greater than Nix has ever encountered and if she wants to be reunited with the people she loves she will have to gather a team and take down those who she would dare attempt to incarcerate her kind. A war is coming and Nix is being called upon to do what she does best, kill!
I really couldn’t believe how bad the world has become for Nix and the abnormals. Her captivity almost broke her yet once again the mother in her makes her bound and determined to defeat the latest foe. The action is superb. The characters are compelling and the plot is just plain incredible. I am already suffering from withdrawal from the series and I just finished this read a moment ago. I hope the next book won’t take a year to be released because I don’t think my heart can stand it. People, if you don’t believe anything else believe this: The Nix series is a must if you are a lover of the paranormal world. Start with the first three books and then move on to “The Savage Spell.
Nix is back with a vengeance! This book holy cow! When I first started this book I was thinking what the heck? I mean this was not the Nix I was used to, but then I kept reading and oh yes this was my Nix. It is just the circumstances that she is in in this book are so different! Nix is not someone you want to mess with, and you definitely do not want to mess with her family. I am used to the bad guys in Nix books being Demons or other abnormals, but in this one I was thrown for a loop. As with all of the Nix books, this one is well written. The story line moves along so flawlessly that you just keep turning pages until you hit the last page and you just flip it and say, "What? No!! You did not just end that book right there!" Now I am left wanting to know what Nix is going to do to fix things, can she fix things or is this too much for even our beloved Phoenix? If you love paranormal, action and a plot that twist and turns on you and an ending that has you wanting to strangle the author then this one is for you. (no worries, this author ALWAYS delivers in the next book and it is always worth the wait.)
Nix is back!!!! I didn't realize how much I missed Nix till I started reading A Savage Spell. I absolutely loved the first 3 books and I was so happy to be diving back into this world. This book is just as good as the others. Nix is trapped in a facility where they are brainwashing abnormals into thinking their lives outside the facility were false. They are told they're at this facility to "get better." Nix is one of their model patients. What they don't know is she's just biding her time. This is the second time she's been taken from her child and these people are going to burn in hell for taking her away from her family and endangering their lives. This book is like a rollercoaster. That slow build up to get to the top, only to come flying down and hit a twist here and there and then it suddenly comes to a stop. You just sit there afterwards thinking, I gotta do that again. I can't wait to see what else Nix's story has to bring us. Side note, the Easter eggs dropped in this book are the best (don't read too much into them, they are just fun tidbits for the true Mayer fans)!
Why oh why another cliff hanger? You are one of my top ten favorite authors of all time, Shannon, right in there with Margaret Mitchell and Vince Flynn ( okay, I am eclectic - so shoot me! ) but I am 68 years old and may not have too many more cliff hangers in me! So hurry with the next Box book, please as I want to " see " Bear again as well as meeting his little sister and finding out how and where the bad angels go and what I next with Killian and Phoenix and... well, I guess I can ask for " reading privileges " in the hereafter?????!!!!!! This was the best of the best because I am already so invested in all of the characters as I feel I have come to know and love ( or hate ) them so well... I have been in and out of the hospital several times while awaiting this newest Nix novel and while it is certainly well worth the wait, please hurry with the next one but make it just as superlative as this one!!! I have three favorite fantasy authors and you are at the top of my list, love! Keep writing, Shannon, and know so very many of us out here sincerely appreciate it!!! Thanks for a superb read!!!
Nix is one of my all time favourite charters and her first three books are up there with the best Iv ever read. I was so unsure where Shannon could take this story that wouldn’t fall short of the original three.. but man should I not have worried. From the very first page you are sucked in to the story.. there is none stop action.. the new charters are just amazing and become part of the Nix family so smoothly that you care straight away what is going to happen to them, and then by the end we have are old faces resurfacing that just make the gang and book complete. Now with not just Nix and the people she loves lives and future on the line , but abnormals everywhere relying on her to survive. She must pull on all her will to save those she loves.. and trust where she normally wouldn’t.. and together they must face a new and impossible enemy. What another breathtaking instalment for Nix’s story I can wait for the next one.
I think we all believed that Phoenix's story was right and tight... finished... consummated... finalized... concluded... destined to be remembered fondly but forever shelved on a The End aisle. I've never been so happy to see one of the more BA women characters ever created be taken out of mothballs and handed a couple of mouthy spirit-filled weapons! A Savage Spell takes place just a little over a year after where Rise of the Phoenix concluded (RofP is the third book in Mayer's Nix series).
An unknown-before-now side of Nix is unveiled in this unrivaled character - Absolute Patience. If patience is a virtue then Nix is the proverbial Goddess of Time. Mayer not only continued the Phoenix series but reimagined it. Familiar faces have chosen alternate paths (*cough* he's Irish), and new faces (including a few new family members 😮) advance what Nix fans believed to be a completed story arc.
Yes, I yelled. I'm so excited to have a new Nix book, and WOW what a ride this one is!
This book starts with Nix in a bad situation. She's been caged and has lost her family, again. They tell her they never existed, that Abnormals aren't really, that she's not really the boogeyman to others.
This book is like getting on a roller coaster when it's at the very tip top of the track and then racing down. Your heart is pumping and it's all downhill, until it's not.
Typical of Shannon Mayer books there are some great Easter Eggs thrown in that reference her other series, see how many you can spot!
This is a book I could not put down, I finished it in one day, it was just that riveting. I really want the next book NOW.
If you've not read this series, go grab Nix's first book and catch up, you won't regret it.
WOW! This is definitely one action packed, suspenseful and utterly thrilling story that had me on the edge of my seat trying not to have a heart attack.
Nix is back and ready to kick some ass and get some sweet vengeance at the same time. She is still the tough, witty, kickass heroine we all know and love but she has become a bit more hardened and meaner. She has lost it all once again but refuses to let it destroy her. She is coming back to take them all down to hell.
Nix takes us on one thrilling and very bumpy roller coaster ride of emotions. Shocking me and leaving me speechless at every turn. Momma bear is back to fight for her family and the worlds future.
Shannon has done it again, writing a brilliant story that captives and entertains us readers but always leaving us begging her for more.
Oh my poor heart. Waking in a “psych” ward, Nix finds herself imprisoned and just getting by. But like always things aren’t what they seem. The fallen have decided to purge the planet of abnormals and no one sure why they are keeping them. I don’t want to give things away because you won’t see some of the things coming! There’s just so much in this novel that your heart is going to take a beating. Shannon Mayers twisted mind does it again I am I must give up on do anything else till I’m am done with this book page turner. Thankfully I was listening to the audiobook so I could somewhat adult because seriously you don’t want to stop. Whiplash may occur from the twister of events that you’re are take through so fair warning. And that ending.... damn girl!
This one kind of started out slow and I wasn't sure I was going to like it as much as the first 3 in the series. I'm glad to say that after the first couple of chapters things started to pick up, and it got back to the kind of story I was expecting from the first 3. All the tension, suspense, and action that had been missing from the first couple chapters suddenly made an appearance and we were off to the races again. I loved it. I'm glad I didn't give up when those first couple of chapters started to drag for me.
There were more twists and turns in this story that I didn't expect. A lot of curveballs that I really didn't expect. And of course left hanging on a major cliffhanger. I'm glad the last book in this series is already released and I can just dive into it. I really need to know how this story is going to end.
This book starts us off about 2 years from the last book. Someone is snatching up all the Abnormals. There is an agenda behind it but we don’t know what. Separated from her family again, Nix is biding her time so she can get to them.
We meet some new characters and a new dog in this book. (I know, I cried when Abigail and Abe died, but this one survives this book and I’m hoping that continues). As is the Mayer way, you will love to hate the bad guys and cheer on the new set of characters while wondering if any of them will betray our beloved Nix.
As is also the Mayer way, there are surprises along the way we don’t see coming.
Will Nix be able to do the job that is ahead of her? It’s the biggest one of her life and I don’t know how she will do it but she needs to defeat them to get her family back and make the world safe for abnormals!
Holy crap! I did a quick reread of my favorite series before jumping into #4 and I'm so glad for the refresher because Shannon jumps right in. This book was nearly impossible to put down. Pulling at your mind amd leaving you thinking what the heck is going on in numerous occasions. Then when you get answers your mind...blown. I kept trying to turn the last page thinking there had to be more! Did not wamt the book to end!
Won't give you any spoilers but Nix is as badass as ever, she has a sidekick you'll love as much as Abe, and of course you'll remember Dinah as quirky as ever. You'll meet some new faces along the way that will have you cracking up...swearing...cracking up again.
I ordered this book as soon as the author announced it, last March. I barely made it through the waiting, what with a pandemic distraction and all. The series picks up at a critical, vulnerable time in our Phoenix’s life and doesn’t slow for a minute as she takes on foes of biblical proportions who have brought their evil mission to earth. I love the fighting spirit Nix demonstrates as even those who started out seeking to destroy her begin to understand why she shines, so brilliantly in the darkness of the violence around her. A reader could start with this book, but the first three in the series will give you a much richer perspective. Read it all!
It kinda reminded me of The Thirst (last vampire) by Christopher Pike. When he took a long break between the original books and the new ones, the tone had changed and it took a beat to give back in. Same thing here: Shannon's writing of Nix has changed. Took me a minute to feel this new adventure, but once I was in, I was all in. Nix is still by far one of my favorite anti heroes (I don't want to call her a heroine because she's just such a badass and sometimes has to do bad to do good). I was really excited about quite a few plot points I had been wondering about after the initial trilogy. I can really only say this: I will never stop recommending Phoenix to anyone looking for a badass female lead series.
I really loved the original trilogy so of course when I found out there was more coming, I was super excited! I loved that the same sense of not wanting to put the book down, that you wanted to find out what happens next was still so strong. But be aware, it ends on a cliffhanger! Nix has been captured and is being held in an underground facility, shes been told shes only human, that The Phoenix is all in her mind, but our Nix knows how to survive and when she sees an opportunity, damn straight shes taking it! Now she has to make the ultimate choice again - go to her children and protect them for as long as she can, or stop the bad guys so her children can grow old in peace. Such a great series and one of my all time favourites 💜
I like to review bks. that are series as this Phoenix series at the end of series, unfortunately have to wait for next series to come out, this story kept me entertain , to Full of cliffhangers at the end of each story that makes you want to continue till the end. Revolves around a character name phenoix, and discovering her powers as she learns to tap into it and all the other wonderful characters she comes into contact with, and learning where her journey takes her through all the betrayal, lies, loveless family members and discovering the powers her father covet. A fresh take on paranormal stories. Hope the author can keep the creative juices going for next series, so far, one of my favorite authors.
Another exceptional book in this series and it books you and won't let go. Nix is in a facility where strong abnormals are being kept prisoner their minds being kept in check by handlers reaching deep inside their brains she was captured after giving birth and was there for a year finally escaping and taking some and a dog with her she has to discover why they are being taken and why some are being killed. She discovers her daughter is alive meets her grandmother and a brother she never knew existed and finds Killian alive. The enemy are fallen angels that are slowly exterminating their children and preparing to use the strong ones but for what? Can't wait for the last in this series.
