Star Youngblood has always been a fighter-a necessity after her mother married a monster of a man. Now, she's finally on the path to the stable life she's always wanted. Her employer, Priscilla Kelly, is a sweet woman ravaged by rheumatoid arthritis, and Star will do anything to help her. Even if that means going toe to toe with Mrs. Kelly's neglectful son.
After being betrayed on the mission field and devastated by the tragic death of his father, Paul Kelly gave up on God. He lives life on his own terms, biding his time as a corporate pilot until he can save enough money to begin his own flight school closer to home. His mother is all he has left, and he wants to be near her. He just didn't expect her health to decline so quickly. When he discovers his mother has taken in a stray--a woman he's not at all sure can be trusted--his protective instincts kick into high gear. Paul's handled a lot of turbulence, but he's never gone up against a force like Star.
As Paul and Star strive to protect his mother in their own ways, they soon find their hearts are at the greatest risk.

Wow, Janet Ferguson is now an auto buy author for me! STAR RISING is my first book by her but holy cow! She had my emotions all over the place. Once I started reading, it was very hard to stop! The twists and turns made it impossible to put down, as I had to know what was going to happen to Star. What an awesome story. All of Janet’s characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself cheering for all of them, praying they can work out their differences and be happy once again.
STAR RISING felt like watching a reality television show. I had to know what was going to happen to Star and all the secondary characters. All of the characters are flawed, not perfect in any way which makes the readers connect to any one of them. Paul and Star thought they knew what each other were all about but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Part of this story takes place in Ireland and the traveling problems that come up for them is very funny! Once you start reading STAR RISING it will be very hard to put down! Not all of this story is happy though. Star has had a tough life and only being one year sober has her holding on to her faith more than ever.
STAR RISING is without a doubt one of the funnest books I’ve read in 2020 so far. I was instantly emotionally invested in all of the characters. Mostly, they all kept me laughing but the banter between Star and Paul is hysterical. Janet Ferguson is such a wonderful and heart tugging author and she had me laughing and crying on the very same page. I am now going to read all of her previous books and she has just made a new fan forever! STAR RISING had me constantly guessing which way Star’s life was going to go. Grab your copy today and get on the couch!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from JustRead. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.
When I picked up Star Rising, I was thrilled to discover that Star Youngblood, one of my favorite supporting characters from Ferguson's The Art of Rivers, would be the main character of Star Rising. (Yes, I probably should've gathered that from the title, but I didn't...)
I absolutely loved Star—her new faith, her determination to do the right thing (even when it's difficult), her compassionate heart. It took longer to warm up to Paul, with good reason. But as the story progressed, I came to pull for his happiness, too.
One thing I really appreciate about Janet W. Ferguson's novels is that her characters are real. By that I mean that they struggle with real life issues, both before and after conversion. It lends an authenticity to the stories that I enjoy.
It seems like I enjoy each Ferguson novel I read more than the last, and that's certainly true here. Star Rising is an excellent novel that I highly recommend!
Disclosure of material connection: I received this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.
I loved everything about Star Rising, as is the case with all that Janet Ferguson writes. This story is the whole package – entertaining storyline, well-drawn characters, struggles and temptations that readers can relate to, and faith themes applicable to daily life. Star Rising is Christian fiction at its best. A book rarely brings me to tears, but I had my moments in this story, especially in a moving scene toward the end.
Star, who was introduced in the previous Coastal Hearts novel, literally stole my heart. Driven to addictive behaviors as a result of experiences no child should have to go through, Star has come out on the other side with a new Christian faith. Star is smart, spunky, and I loved her so much. Walking beside her on her new faith journey was refreshing. And then there’s Paul. Paul is not at all likeable in the beginning, his one shining spot being that he loves his mother – not so much Star’s employer, but close friend and spiritual mentor. Then we learn that he has a mission field past that resulted in disillusionment and anger toward God – which makes him a compelling character for me.
Star and Paul have a beginning that’s so rough that it can only improve. There’s some hilarious scenes, such as the flight to Ireland, a trip that was on Mrs. Kelly’s bucket list. For Paul, it was a flight from… well, you know where. But best of all is the spiritual theme skillfully woven throughout. Star Rising is a heartwarming story of grace and redemption. I hope to see Paul and Star in future books.
Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book through JustRead Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This book has been wooing me for some time from its queue on my audible wishlist. (In my quest to read more Christian indie authors I was pleasantly surprised to find a number of them available in both audio and paperback format.) Anyway, poor Star was hovering in an endless waiting pattern until she cropped up on multiple social media sights on great vacation read hit lists. Wait. Vacation? And, gasp, to Ireland? Star Rising jumped into my check out cart in a nanosecond.
Ferguson has poured so much heart and faith into Star and Paul's story. It moved me to tears and fired up my righteous indignation and kept me in laughing fits in between. The kind of story that digs deep, demands much of its characters and therefore by turn, its readers. I'm still astounded and a tad bemused. That might come from great lines like this one:
"Unless a male is wearing a diaper, you can't change him. That's God's job."
Snort laugh and then...whoa...as the profound truth hits you. That sharp bit of wisdom comes from Mrs. Kelly who I absolutely love! I want to be adopted by her. Love her tenacity and open heart and abiding faith. Not to mention her patience when it comes to her son.
Paul is a bit of a bear when we first meet him. Mean as a Grizzly...or it seems that way. Really, he's a clash of conflicting emotions -- kind and considerate one moment, even repentant at times, and then lashing out with cutting sarcasm the next. Of course, he's got a history, one where he's allowed bitterness to take hold and it's begun to redefine the man.
And then he meets Star, a woman with a troubled past. She has fought her own demons and emerged triumphant, a new person in Christ and she embraces her faith with ardent enthusiasm. So, we have an embittered ex-Christian hero and a exuberant new Christian heroine forced into close company on a not-so-magical trip to Ireland. There's definitely a kind of Beauty and the Beast vibe going on here.
I really love the way the author has woven faith around the lives of her characters. So many amazing "God moments" -- both funny and goosebumping -- as Paul is reluctantly drawn back into the fold.
An exceptional, deeply emotional romance and Connie Shabshab's excellent narration made me enjoy the telling all the more.
I was on Star's team from the very beginning, but Paul, that man was a hard sell. However, Ferguson provides such a heart-tugging transformation for him and spent such careful time on it, that I did come around to his character. Star and Paul both have the wrong idea about each other, and while it is indeed a huge misunderstanding, the way it comes about is actually feasible. Some of their back and forth is actually humorous, and their traveling mishaps had me smiling and also commiserating. I was delighted that part of the story is set in Ireland.
Star's story is engaging, and tender yet tough heart is so easy to cheer for. Some tough, unthinkable things took place in her past, and her character arc is a joy to behold. While I suggest reading all of the previous books in the series, definitely read book three before reading this one, as it does give a bit of Star's back story and just adds a great depth to her story here.
I recommend this entire series for readers of faith-infused, contemporary romances.
Wow, this book blew me away! I've wanted to read Star Rising ever since I first saw the gorgeous cover and learned that it was partly set in Ireland (one of my favorite settings to read about!) so of course I jumped at the chance to request a review copy! This book is so amazing, I loved everything about it and hated to stop reading! Star and Paul were both fabulous characters! I loved Star, and I so wish she were real because I would love to be friends with her. Paul was very broken and a bit jaded, but his humanness was so real and relatable that I couldn't help but like him and I was rooting for him to find his way back to God! Also, I loved Davis, he made me smile and laugh every time he showed up on the page, and I'm so hoping he will get his own book! The faith story in this book is beautifully threaded throughout. It wove itself around my heart, and won't let go! Star Rising is an absolutely fabulous book! Reading it made me so happy, and I absolutely adored it from start to finish! Definitely one for the keeper shelf, and I know it's one that I will re-read in the future! I most highly recommend Star Rising, read it ASAP, you won't regret it!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher. Which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own!
Wow! This story! Star Rising was all at once a novel that had many humorous and lighthearted moments, yet didn’t shy away from difficult topics.
The main character, Paul, was a man who once worked in the mission field but has since rejected God and all things relating to the “myth and fairy tale” that he claims Christianity to be. Paul let betrayal and deep loss tear him away from his beliefs.
Star was first introduced to readers in the previous book, The Art of Rivers. She was a very rough and hurt character in that book. In Star Rising, we are able to see the transforming power of Christ in her life, along with her very real and newfound faith. I really appreciated learning more about her backstory and how she ended up addicted in the first place and in need of rescuing.
I liked Paul and Star so much. Granted, Paul was not a very likable guy in the beginning of the story, however, I felt that the author gave me a peek into his heart even right from the beginning. I knew that he loved his mother, had regretted some decisions, and was simply trying to work things out in his own way and on his own strength. As he and Star began to bond in Ireland, Paul’s potential began to shine through.
I loved this book from start to finish and the way the author did not shy away from the mistakes that these characters had made in their lives and the various decisions that were painful, yet necessary, to make.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
“I’ve told my daughters this many times—unless a male is wearing a diaper, you can't change him. That’s God’s job.”
Another superb novel in the Coastal Hearts series! This is book 4 but can be read as a stand-alone (though I do highly recommend reading Art of Rivers - book 3 - to get the background on all the wonderful people that Star calls friends). Janet Ferguson’s storytelling is smooth and easy to follow, even when she deals with such tough issues like addiction and abandonment. Star’s life journey has been a tough one but she can’t hide her tender, loyal heart and spirit. As a new believer and one-year sober, she tries hard to cling to God’s hope and love even as her past tries to drag her down. Paul, a disillusioned, angry, and bitter ex-missionary, comes home to his ailing mother but finds himself on a whirlwind trip to Ireland. The sights and sounds of St. Simons and parts of Ireland will captivate you as the main characters vie for a place in your heart. Their spiritual journey will reaffirm your faith....and Paul’s encounter with God will have you reaching for your tissue box.
This heart-warming contemporary book is not to be missed. I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
So heartwarming to see a character come from the depths from which Star was at in the prior Coastal Hearts novel to many months drug and alcohol free and learning to be a Christian. Quite a dramatic and welcome change. I found Star's character to be credible. She sought the wisdom of Christians with more knowledge yet made some mistakes too.
Paul was also a believable character too, but definitely a whole lot less warm and fuzzy. After getting mad at God, he decided to quite believing and displayed irritation at anyone's mention of the Bible, Christ, etc.
I loved the message of remembering to pray and seeks God's counsel before making decisions. There were so many fabulous Christian influences that showed love to both Star and Paul. I particularly loved Davis and hope his story will be next. My favorite quote (paraphrased)…"the only man you can change is one in a diaper".
My gratitude to the author for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
In her brand new release, Janet Ferguson takes readers on a trip to Ireland. A trip that doesn’t start out very promising for Paul Kelly. There are some fairly humorous moments (as long as they’re not happening to you).
Janet Ferguson delves into Star Youngblood’s difficult upbringing and Paul’s lack of faith while organically moving their relationship of contention to one much, much more amiable.
I adored Star. Her desire to do the right thing and listen to God’s voice in her new life (the one she’s spent the past year clawing her way toward) is inspirational. She’s a faithful friend and a warrior when the situation calls for a protector, yet vulnerable with a desire to find her place. All of those qualities make her the perfect person to challenge Paul.
Faith, family, falling in love, and gorgeous scenery are just a few reasons you don’t want to miss Star Rising.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Star Rising is an unforgettable story filled with witty humor, characters who come alive, and a deeper meaning that will resonate in readers' hearts. Ferguson has once again outdone herself!
I admit, I didn't like Paul for most of the book. Honestly, I was pulling for Davis. But redemption does come Paul's way, transforming him to the point of changing my opinion of him. That doesn't usually happen for me. That's good writing for you!
Star Youngblood is a strong young lady taking care of another strong but older woman. Priscilla Kelly enjoys living, but it is difficult for her because of her rheumatoid arthritis. This is the reason she hired Star to stay with her and help her out. But Mrs. Kelly's son Paul didn't like the setup, despite the fact that he never came to see his mom. But he has his job for now but he is determined to move his mother to as assisted living community. As soon as he saves enough money to open his new business. He wasn't expecting his mom to take off on her trip of a lifetime with her employee Star, none the less. When he ended up on the trip as well, he never expected his life to change as it did.
Author Janet Ferguson pens another amazing, well written story that will keep her readers thinking about it long after it's read. I love the interaction between Star and Paul. Star was now a Christian and Paul claimed to have given up on everything to do with God, but Star's faith was too strong. I could understand Paul being upset with the Christians he had worked with before, but not his crossing God out of his life because of a persons behavior was a bit harsh. And Paul's mom was so precious! I love her sweet character and he love for her son, and for Star.
A lot of things happen in this story, a lot of tensions much of the time, but it all fit perfectly well as Ms. Ferguson weaves it all together in the end. I really liked the Christian faith of the characters, and though Star's faith came across so strong with Paul, it was still so subtle and handled in a professional way. It's what Christian fiction is all about. I love this story, as well as the other stories in this series. If you are looking for a good clean Christian read, this is an awesome one to read. And if you are new to Janet W. Ferguson books, I highly recommend you check out this one a d her other books as well.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Star Rising was an engaging novel with beautiful scenery, authentic characters and solid biblical truth. I loved how the author effortlessly infused faith into this book by allowing her characters to intentionally pursue God and be mindful of His Word regularly instead of occasionally mentioning it; it’s an admirable quality that I treasure in Janet W. Ferguson’s writing. I also loved the vivid descriptions of Ireland – the food, the locations and distinctive charms of the country made it easy to envision and enjoy a literary vacation.
I really liked Star – her strength, vulnerability and desire to put her relationship with God first made her easy to relate to and root for. Star is a new Christian with a background of abuse and addiction - and I liked how the author honestly portrayed her struggles, faults and reliance on God in overcoming past wounds. She was a great heroine with authenticity and depth. Paul was harder to warm up to, especially considering his less than favorable introduction. Angry and bitter from his past, Paul gave up on God, but I loved how the trip to Ireland humbles him (in sometimes amusing ways) and how God relentlessly pursues Paul’s heart, despite Paul's constant rejection of Him. His spiritual journey is a beautiful example of God's grace and love for us.
I liked the sweet romance, as well. The evolution of Paul and Star’s relationship conveys realistic struggles when two people don’t share the same foundational faith, and I appreciated the honesty of that. However, I didn’t emotionally connect with their relationship as much as I’d like.
Overall, Star Rising was an enjoyable read.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Janet W. Ferguson continues her tradition of redeeming wounded characters in this contemporary romance that features a former addict, an ailing but lively elderly lady, and her bitter and somewhat neglectful son. And it just so happens to include a trip to Ireland—albeit with a few travelling mishaps to keep them on their toes!
Paul and Star definitely don’t get off to a great start, each forming a poor opinion of the other and neither treating the other in a manner that was likely to change that any time soon. But they do both care greatly for Mrs. Kelly, even if they show it in different ways, and so find themselves accompanying her on her dream trip to Ireland—and beginning to see each other through new eyes along the way.
For Paul, though, it’s not just his opinion of Star that needs to change but his opinion of God. At times I felt his attitude toward God and Christianity in general was a little extreme, even considering the events that precipitated his attitude—it sure made him a tough nut to crack! But Janet Ferguson doesn’t shy away from cracking that nut, nor does she shy away from the complications this causes for Star and Paul as their relationship begins to shift.
It’s a bumpy ride at times as heads butt and sparks fly, but it’s also a story of the way in which God transforms—with a little adventure and sightseeing along the way.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Such a well written book! Star is a character you like from the start. And Paul is very cautious when it comes to his mother and has his own ideas. Star has grown to care greatly for Mrs Kelly and is helping her achieve a dream of going to Ireland. Paul doesn’t want his mother to go and insists on joining them. And so the adventure begins. Two people who are on a journey with Mrs. Kelly. Definitely recommend reading this one. I received a copy of this book from the author. All views stated here are my own.
This novel is as gorgeous as it’s cover. Janet Ferguson tackles some tough subject with grace and love. I adored going on a book vacation to Ireland and now wish I had my passport and some cash so I could go for real!
Janet Ferguson is quickly becoming one of my favorite storytellers. Star Rising is a seriously great book. I loved everything about this story. The dislike-at-first-sight trope is my favorite Romance trope, and Ferguson utilizes it perfectly in this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and found it not only highly engaging but extremely fast-paced as well. Pages were flying by. And, I found Ferguson’s themes timely and thoughtful. Overall, Star Rising is a homerun!
In Colossians 3:23 Paul tells us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” If I’m truly honest, I struggle with this verse. Not the working part - I do that in spades. I think my job is trying to kill me with all the work they are putting on my plate. I struggle with the heartily part, and that often takes my focus off God. My work becomes burdensome and I feel trapped trying to please all of my bosses. Then bitterness and resentment infiltrate into my heart, and I find myself wanting to give up. I get mad at God because I don’t understand why He’s forcing me into a job that’s trying to kill me. In this sense, I really related to Paul, the hero of Star Rising.
Paul, at the start of this novel, is seriously jaded. He hit a really rough patch earlier in his life and he allowed that to turn him into a very angry and bitter man who has walked away from God. Over the course of the novel, with quite a few hilarious bumps along the way, Paul comes to realize that his work for God was never actually work for God. Paul was working at Christian things to please his earthly father and to heap honor and glory upon himself. Once Paul understands his erroneous ways, he is able to ask God for His forgiveness and is able to realign himself to God’s will. Paul learns how to work heartily for God, and I found this to be an excellent reminder for me. I need to check my motives. Why is work becoming a burden? Am I working for God heartily? Or am I working for myself and my bosses? Do I need their approval or God’s? All of these are excellent questions I need to remember to ponder from time to time so I don’t end up jaded like Paul was at the start of this fabulous story.
Star Rising is a stellar novel that I just cannot recommend enough. I am going to miss my time with these characters, but I very much look forward to all Janet Ferguson has in store for her readers in the future. If you are looking for an excellent Contemporary Christian novel check out Star Rising. You won’t be disappointed that you did.
I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the author. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Star Youngblood is rebuilding her life. A horrible childhood sent her into alcoholism and addiction. She’s now a Christian, has been sober for a year, and is supporting herself by working as an aide and housekeeper for the elderly Mrs. Kelly, who has become surrogate mother. Star’s troubles start when Mrs. Kelly has a heart attack. Her son, Paul, returns and takes an instant dislike to Star.
Then Mrs. Kelly decides she wants to complete the trip she’d planned to take with her husband—to Ireland. She invites Star along as her caregiver, a move which raises Paul’s ire and suspicion. He ends up tagging along, more to keep an eye on Star than to care for his mother.
Star has problems, but she has identified them, is working on them, and most are a direct or indirect result of her childhood mistreatment. While I couldn’t Star’s background from personal knowledge (thankfully), I could respect and admire her progress into becoming the woman God created her to be. Paul Kelly? Not so much.
I will admit that I had a lot of unChristian feelings for Paul. Sure, he’d given up on Christianity, but he’d also turned into an unkind and suspicious person. I also suspected he never had a deep Christian faith to begin with, as the event that caused him to lose his faith didn’t seem a big enough deal to abandon faith in God. (Abandon the church, sure. But not God.) That low baseline meant Paul had a lot of room to grow and improve— and he had a lot of improving to do if he was going to be worthy of Star.
Janet Ferguson did a brilliant job of redeeming Paul. By the end I was convinced that he and Star would make a great couple. This is a credit to the excellent writing. Overall, Star Rising is an excellent example of Christian romance, with an emphasis on the “Christian”. The Christian elements are well integrated into the plot so they’re essential, but never preachy.
Recommended.
Note that Star Rising is the third novel in the Coast Hearts series, but can easily be read as a standalone story.
Ferguson has a way of writing broken characters that just really resonates with me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but she brings these characters to life, and makes them a part of your own life. They become your friends, your family, and you start to feel for them, think about them, and want to help them. It's amazing to me that she is able to do that. Yes, I am an avid reader who easily gets lots in a book, but this is more than that.
I was excited to get my hands on this since I first heard about it. Star Rising delivers a message of hope, redemption, and self worth. Yes there is some romance, tension, and the works, but the pwerful message of how God can change us is what I found to be the best part of this story. It reminds me to never stop praying for that loved ones that's just too stubborn to accept Jesus. It reminds me that everyone has a story, a background, and none of them are perfect, and yet Jesus accepts them as they are.
Friends I highly encourage you to read this book, well the entire series actually. You'll benefit so much from reading it from the start. I promise you won't be sorry you did! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Coastal Hearts series by Janet Ferguson is the first of this author’s novels I have read, and I have some serious catching up to do! There are just some author’s whose storytelling catches the reader, leaving them desperate for more of the story, and saddened when each book comes to a close. Oh how we wish the process of getting a book into reader’s hands could be shortened. Janet Ferguson has become one of those authors for me.
In Star Rising, a recovering Star Youngblood is fighting her way back into life, a life with a home of her own but first she needs to find a job, well another job. She has been employed by Priscilla Kelly as a caretaker, with whom she’s formed a very strong friendship and bond, but in order to purchase her very first home, she needs to find a way to increase her income.
Things are moving forward fairly well, until Priscilla’s health warrants a visit from her son. Except her son Paul, a pilot, lives across the sea and never seems to call or visit. Determined that her friend needs her son, Star repeatedly contacts him until one day he just appears, and their first meeting does not go well. Star finds Paul Kelly to be arrogant, rude and dismissive; she immediately finds herself wanting to protect her friend.
Paul Kelly doesn’t know who this young woman is and he certainly doesn’t like how much she seems to have inserted herself into his mother’s life. When he learns that his mother has invited Star to move in with her, he’s upset; and when he further learns she is a recovering addict, all bets are off. No way is Star moving in with his mother, he just wants to get mother settled in an upscale, well-reputed retirement home, selling her property so he can get back to his own life.
Only thing is Star is having none it and she’s ready to fight for her friend, for however long it takes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Just Read Tours and am not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions therein are solely my own, and freely given.
Absolutely loved this story, wish I could have stayed in Ireland a little longer with the characters, Janet brought the people and the place to life so vividly it makes me wish i could see those sites for myself! What an emotional journey Star and Paul go through, amazing story by a terrific authour!
In Star Rising, two characters, Star and Paul grapple with faith and life and trusting others after traumatic pasts. These themes are something that is written about often, but I felt that Ferguson did a wonderful job of making them real. I was able to relate to Star a lot, and really loved that she was portrayed so realistically. She was a fun character with quirks and faults and I loved that. I had a bit more trouble liking Paul though. He really seemed to be more stereotyped and flat than Star was. Now, given, I've never been in a situation like his so I don't realistically know how one would react, but he still felt stiff and 1D. I really did enjoy Star and Paul's relationship and the sass and sarcasm, but it did seem to go overboard a little. At some parts they really seemed to argue like five year olds and not adults. All in all, I enjoyed this story and if you enjoy clean romance with great lessons sprinkled throughout, you should give this one a try!
**I received a complementary copy of this book but all opinions and thoughts are my own**
My gosh! This story y'all! I can't believe it! The message that was in this book is exactly what my pastor talked about in church this morning! How wild is that! Yes, I actually listened lol. Star is an amazing character. She's proof of overcoming that's for sure. I love her determination along with God's help to be what she could be and I loved rooting her on! Paul was a little harder in getting to know. He's perfect example of selfishness. Only thinking about himself. But, you know what? I rooted him on too! God sure had His work cut out for Him in Paul. Agreed that we're all a work in progress. Too often we want to do things our way and not God's so that often gets us in trouble. That's where Love and Grace comes in. I can relate to Mrs.Kelly in sooooooo many ways. I felt like I knew her by the time this book was over. I ended up calling her the Wise Woman by the time this story was over. I didn't want to say goodbye to her. Such an awesome lady. We all fall short of the Glory of God but thank God for His unending Love and Grace. I liked this story better than the first book. It was a lot more exciting and had more drama than I've ever seen and that my friends is why I enjoyed it I also enjoyed a little vacation with Paul, Star and Mrs. Kelly. I felt like I was really there! Ferguson has managed to pull me in from the beginning and yes I was sniffling there towards the end. You might want a box of tissues. I enjoyed getting to know Morris, Linda, and all of the other supporting characters. I also felt that Ferguson has pulled off a very tough subject and has managed to weave it in very nicely with the rest of the storyline. I highly recommend it. Hopefully this will be a blessing to someone else and if they're in a situation like Star's I'm hoping that they will be able get help. My thanks to Just Reads Tours and I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Star was such an enigma. Her life had been completely transformed when she turned it over to Jesus. No longer an addict, she still bore the scars of her traumatic childhood. Literally and figuratively. I loved watching her struggle with the need for an escape from bad circumstances and then overcoming them. I also appreciated so much how the author imparted the details without making it painful or offensive to read by doling them out a little at a time.
Paul was the guy you hate but then like a little and then hate again – he was so judgemental and harsh. A man who had once served as a missionary, he was so disillusioned and hurt he turned his back on God. Yet even though he claimed he no longer believed, he couldn't quiet the voice in his head that recalled scriptures at the most inconvenient of times. This is his story of redemption.
Star Rising was such a wonderful book. As with The Art of Rivers. It touched my heart. The spiritual message permeated the book and turned it into a beautiful parable that illustrates truths that are relevant to many. There was a sweet romantic element and yet Star had to make the hard decision to choose Jesus and His will or the man she loved who rejected Him.
This blend of serious situations and light-hearted humor will touch your heart. If you have not yet read The Art of Rivers you might want to read it first to get to know some of the characters and learn details about Star's backstory that were only alluded to here, though it isn't completely necessary. This story does stand on its own. Read my full review at Among the Reads
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
“You may’ve given up on God, but I feel in my spirit that He’s still pursuing you. He loves you, and He’s got better things in store for you when you really let Him own you.” These words show the struggle between the two main characters in this book. Star is striving to live a life fully given over to God and drawing upon His strength; while Paul who used to be a missionary, has been hurt by people claiming to have a relationship with God, and now is pushing that life away. This was a wonderful story of redemption and love. I was touched with many of the quotes and examples this author uses to show us God’s love. The struggles and emotions Paul has are so true to many of us. We wonder where is God in our pain? I loved Star’s determination to live a better life, even after all that she went through growing up. She was striving to rise above all her struggles and wrong choices. It was also fun to see some of the characters from previous books come into this story. I loved how it flowed together. Another sweet thing about this book is that the author took us on a beautiful trip to Ireland. It was exhilarating to picture the stunning parts of that country. It made me want to take a trip there and see things for myself. If you want to read a book that weaves a beautiful tale of love, redemption, healing, and hope, then you want to pick this up. As these characters go through some tough times, the author sweetly brings in the hope we all can have in God. It’s not pushy, or fake. She presences it in a very real way. It will touch your heart and challenge you to dig deeper, to question what you really personally feel. I think I will continue to read more of Janet W. Ferguson’s books. The ones I’ve read have touched my heart. I highly recommend you pick this book up to read.
OH MY HOLY OY!! THIS BOOK!! More than a couple of similarities to my life, namely that I struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. Not to the degree Priscilla Kelly does, but oh! how I can relate! It doesn’t get much more real than a believer who has turned his back on God. And the struggle doesn’t get more heartbreaking for the believer(s) who love them. Ms. Ferguson’s story pulls the reader right into that struggle, putting fiery Star and cynical and distrustful Paul at odds. Then she throws them together, and like iron sharpens iron, they discover neither is quite what they first thought. The spiritual and Biblical elements in this story feed both Paul’s cynicism and anger, and Star’s faith and buoyant personality. This book is definitely a page-turner, urging the reader to the end. Love and joy and hope, human hurts and human hearts, tragedy and miracles, Ms. Ferguson has written a winning story that will resound with the reader.

Review of Star Rising: A Coastal Hearts Novel by Janet W. Ferguson In Star Rising, Janet W. Ferguson shows a young woman making the hard, correct choices which are exemplary of living the Christian life. Temptations aren’t discounted. Hurts aren’t glossed over. Romantic tension courses through the pages. Just about anyone can relate to the characters in this Christian romance. Have you gotten mad at God because you think life’s circumstances turned on you? Or are you coming out of a rough time or place and clinging to God just to make it? Perhaps you are feeling the effects of age or disease, but you still have a lot to offer? In Star Rising, Janet W. Ferguson shows God doing what he does best: mending the hearts and lives of broken people. This book has a decidedly hopeful tone, but it isn’t a fairy tale. The characters encounter real-life problems, and things don’t always work out the way we might expect. If you like a good clean romance with a flair of Irish, Star Rising fits the bill.
Janet W. Ferguson is a "New to Me Author" and I jumped into a series at Book 4.
Star Rising is a Christian Fiction Contemporary Romance book and I really enjoy that genre. I did find that I had a rough time understanding the story at first, as I have not yet read the first books in the series.
Star and Paul are the 2 main characters in this book and the setting is in Ireland. Star and Paul have a good relationship, funny together and all around good friends. Star has a past that begins to put a strain on their relationship, and Paul has some issues that Star is trying to "change". Star soon realizes she can't be the one to change Paul, God has to change Paul. Paul struggles with coming back to his Faith, but slowly is giving his heart back to God. Will the relationship Thrive and Survive despite the challenges??
Star Rising is a good book for those who enjoy Christian Based contemporary Romance with some humor mixed in!
I enjoyed this book so much! The characters are so believable, and you can feel their struggles. This was a sweet romance in more ways than one, with a few surprising twists along the way. I hope we get to see these characters again in a future book.
