Justin has seen the dead since he was nine years old.
Now at twenty-six, he's discovering the rules between their world and his aren't the same as they've always been. Devastated by tragedy and haunted by his past, he sets off on a cross country mission with Whitney, his only friend, to find the one person who can tell him who and what he really is.
Jason Stokes is an author and artist living in the mountains of western North Carolina. When he's not at work in the studio he's raising a pair of indomitable Cornish Rex cats and travelling the world with his wife and best friend, Anna.
It's not easy to come up with a premise for a ghost story that hasn't been done before, but Jason Stokes offers up several new twists for lovers of ghost stories. Ok, the protagonist sees dead people, nothing new there, but just exactly how he experiences them, and how his experience changes as the story develops definitely adds a new dimension to what we have traditionally associated with ghosts. No spoilers here; just a strong recommendation for any lover of horror to give Ghost Story a read. The characters are well-developed, the plot offers delightful twists and turns, and the horror is genuinely frightening. Treat yourself and take a ghostly road trip you'll never forget!
Jason Stokes is an indie author to keep an eye on. I read his debut novel Watcher last year, and grabbed this one as soon as it launched. I wasn't disappointed. It's not easy to deliver a ghost story without resorting to overused plot points in the horror genre, but with a dash of road trip adventure, nostalgia, and romance, Stokes has delivered a page-turning tale that feels nothing but fresh. Well done.
I didn't just read this novel by Jason Stokes, I devoured it. Once I started on this journey with Justin, the main character, I couldn't put the book down until the end.
Without giving spoilers, Justin has been able to see the dead since he was nine years old. He's grown accustomed to sharing his world with them until suddenly everything changes. Justin's life is thrown into chaos and he sets off on a cross-country quest to find out the truth regarding himself and his past.
I loved the unique premise of the book and all the twists and turns the author takes the reader on. I enjoyed not being able to predict how the story was going to end -- I was WAY off base. This book had a bit of everything - romance, death, healing, sarcasm, horror, and suspense. I laughed at times and shed some tears at other.
I hope there's a sequel because I can't wait to see what happens next on this journey with those who are dead but certainly not gone.
If you took The Sixth Sense’s seeing dead people and blended in a smidgen of Ghost’s romance, added spine-tingling twists that absolutely jar you out of any sense of comfort, or what you thought could happen, you’ll be absolutely enam- ored by Jason Stokes’s Ghost Story: The Road Home. This is a ghost story that will creep you out, haunt you and leave you hoping for a sequel before you finish reading it.
Justin has been seeing dead people since he was 9. It makes him think he’s a tad on the crazy side, culminating in his loner status. Jason wants nothing to do with people – except Whitney, his co-worker and only friend. Life as he knows it implodes on his 26th birthday when everything changes and tragedy strikes. Justin and Whitney’s journey home for answers and comprehension will stretch everything you’ve ever believed in. There are so many twists in the road, Justin is not the only one who needs to “Find Your Way”.
This book has elaborate horror that includes a wicked wit, suspense and ro- mance, I could not put it down. Perfect!
Jason Stokes’s Ghost Story captivated me from the first few chapters. It was hard to put this story down. The main character, Justin, is a Medium, but we’re not sure if he realizes it or not. He definitely has trouble determining spirits from normal living humans, at times, which...causes some...trouble. The interactions between Justin and the spirits felt very organic.
Justin experiences a personal tragedy which sent him on a quest for answers. Along the way, he may have found some, but he certainly discovered more questions, drew some uncomfortable parallels and overall things weren’t what we thought.
The pacing was tight and fast, descriptions colorful and I truly did not want this book to end!
On a side note: Mr. Stokes’s description of locations in Arizona were so specific and accurate, they made me homesick.
This book, just as others written by Jason Stokes, is gripping and leaves the reader wanting to come back for more with each page. Twists and turns throughout weave a unique pattern composed of challenging family dynamics, relatable relationship challenges and emotions and deep mystery throughout. I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.
If the author's intention was to put the reader to sleep, then this was an excellent book. There is no tension, no suspense and nothing unique about this ghost story. There were pages upon pages of text that bored the living daylights out of me, and I've read hundreds of horror books.
